A detailed study of the magnetic and transport properties of Si1-xMnx (X = 0.35) films is presented. We observe the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in these films up to room temperature. The results of the magnetic measurements and the AHE data are consistent and demonstrate the existence of long-range ferromagnetic (FM) order in the systems under study. A correlation of the AHE and the magnetic properties of Si1-xMnx (X = 0.35) films with their conductivity and substrate type is shown. A theoretical model based on the idea of a two-phase magnetic material, in which molecular clusters with localized magnetic moments are embedded in the matrix of a weak itinerant ferromagnet, is discussed. The long-range ferromagnetic order at high temperatures is mainly due to the Stoner enhancement of the exchange coupling between clusters through thermal spin fluctuations ("paramagnons") in the matrix. Theoretical predictions and experimental data are in good qualitative agreement.
For the study of ferromagnetic materials which are compatible with group-IV semiconductor spintronics, we demonstrate control of the ferromagnetic properties of Heusler-alloys Fe_3-xMn_xSi epitaxially grown on Ge(111) by tuning the Mn composition x. Interestingly, we obtain L2_1-ordered structures even for nonstoichiometric atomic compositions. The Curie temperature of the epilayers with x ~ 0.6 exceeds 300 K. Theoretical calculations indicate that the electronic structures of the nonstoichiometric Fe_3-xMn_xSi alloys become half-metallic for 0.75 < x < 1.5. We discuss the possibility of room-…
Thermal ammonolysis of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) CoTa2O6 yields the O2-/N3- and anionic vacancy ordered Co2+Ta5+2O6-xN2x/3$\Box$x/3 (x $\leq$ 0.15) that exhibits a transition from antiferromagnetism to defect engineered above room-temperature ferromagnetism as evidenced by diffraction, spectroscopic and magnetic characterizations. First-principles calculations reveal the origin of ferromagnetism is a particular CoON configuration with N located at Wyckoff position 8j, which breaks mirror symmetry about ab plane. A pressure-induced electronic phase transition is also predicted at around …
We report structural and magnetic properties of pure ZnO rods using X-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetization hysteresis (M-H) loop and near edge x-ray fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) study at O K edge. Sample of ZnO was prepared by co-precipitation method. XRD and selective area electron diffraction measurements infer that ZnO rods exhibit a single phase polycrystalline nature with wurtzite lattice. Field emission transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy micrographs infers that ZnO have rod type microstructures with dimension 200 nm in diameter and 550 n…
We have investigated the room temperature ferromagnetic order that develops in Al-substituted magnesium oxide, Mg(Al)O, nanoparticles with Al fractions of up to 5 at.%. All samples, including undoped MgO nanoparticles, exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism, with the saturation magnetization reaching a maximum of 0.023 emu/g at 2 at.% of Al. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy identifies the presence of oxygen vacancies in both doped and undoped MgO nanoparticles, with the vacancy concentration increasing upon vacuum annealing of Mg(Al)O, resulting in two-fold enhancement of the saturation magne…
Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic van der Waals materials provide a powerful platform for studying fundamental physics of low-dimensional magnetism, engineering novel magnetic phases, and enabling ultrathin and highly tunable spintronic devices. To realize high quality and practical devices for such applications, there is a critical need for robust 2D magnets with ordering temperatures above room temperature that can be created via exfoliation. Here the study of exfoliated flakes of cobalt substituted Fe5GeTe2 (CFGT) exhibiting magnetism above room temperature is reported. Via quantum magnetic ima…
Ferromagnetism in carbon-based materials is appealing for both applications and fundamental science purposes because carbon is a light and bio-compatible material that contains only s and p electrons in contrast to traditional ferromagnets based on 3d or 4f electrons. Here we demonstrate direct evidence for ferromagnetic order locally at defect structures in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) with magnetic force microscopy and in bulk magnetization measurements at room temperature. Magnetic impurities have been excluded as the origin of the magnetic signal after careful analysis support…
Reports of emergent conductivity, superconductivity, and magnetism at oxide interfaces have helped to fuel intense interest in their rich physics and technological potential. Here we employ magnetic force microscopy to search for room-temperature magnetism in the well-studied LaAlO3/SrTiO3 system. Using electrical top gating to deplete electrons from the oxide interface, we directly observe an in-plane ferromagnetic phase with sharply defined domain walls. Itinerant electrons, introduced by a top gate, align antiferromagnetically with the magnetization, at first screening and then destabilizin…
Monolayer van der Waals (vdW) magnets provide an exciting opportunity for exploring two-dimensional (2D) magnetism for scientific and technological advances, but the intrinsic ferromagnetism has only been observed at low temperatures. Here, we report the observation of room temperature ferromagnetism in manganese selenide (MnSe$_x$) films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Magnetic and structural characterization provides strong evidence that in the monolayer limit, the ferromagnetism originates from a vdW manganese diselenide (MnSe$_2$) monolayer, while for thicker films it could originat…
This paper presents synthesis methods and multifunctional properties of porous Co3O4 nanoplatelets and nanowires. Surprisingly, significantly superior Li-ion battery performance compared to other cathode materials is exhibited in the same samples as room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM). Microstructure observations, and properties measurements and analysis indicate that the as-prepared Co3O4 nanostructures exhibit a spontaneous transformation of their morphology, showing a predominantly {110} plane orientation and preferentially presenting the Co3+ species at the surface at appreciate prepara…
We find that ferromagnetism can be induced in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by introducing hydrogen. Multiwalled CNTs grown inside porous alumina templates contain a large density of defects resulting in significant hydrogen uptake when annealed at high temperatures. This hydrogen incorporation produces H-complex and adatom magnetism which generates a sizeable ferromagnetic moment and a Curie temperature near Tc=1000 K. We studied the conditions for the incorporation of hydrogen, the temperature-dependent magnetic behavior, and the dependence of the ferromagnetism on the size of the nanotubes.
Room temperature ferromagnetic materials composed only by light elements like carbon, hydrogen and/or nitrogen, so called carbon magnet, are very attractive for creating new material categories both in science and industry. Recently several experiments suggest ferromagnetic features at a room temperature, especially in graphite base materials. This paper reveals a mechanism of such ferromagnetic features by modeling nanometer size asymmetric graphene molecule by using both a semi-empirical molecular orbital method and a first principle density function theory. Asymmetrically dihydrogenated zig…
Two-dimensional materials have been gaining great attention as they displayed a broad series of electronic properties that ranging from superconductivity to topology. Among them, those which possess magnetism are most desirable, enabling us to manipulate charge and spin simultaneously. Here, based on first-principles calculation, we demonstrate monolayer chromium iodide arsenide (CrIAs), an undiscovered stable two-dimensional material, is an intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductor with out-of-plane spin magnetization. The indirect bandgaps are predicted to be 0.32 eV for majority spin and 3.31 e…
It is essential to explore two-dimensional (2D) material with magnetic ordering in new generation spintronic devices. Particularly, the seeking of room-temperature 2D ferromagnetic (FM) materials is a hot topic of current research. Here, we study magnetism of the Mn-doped and electron-doped SiC monolayer using first-principle calculations. For the Mn-doped SiC monolayer, we find that either electron or hole could mediate the ferromagnetism in the system and the Curie temperature ($T_C$) can be improved by appropriate carrier doping. The codoping strategy is also discussed on improving $T_C$. T…

Phosphorous alloying of GaMnAs thin films has been used for the manipulation of the magnetic anisotropies in ferromagnetic Ga0.93Mn0.07As1-yPy layers. We have determined the anisotropy constants as a function of temperature for phosphorous alloying levels between 0 and 8.8 at % for a Mn doping level of ~ 7at%. We show that it is possible to obtain layers with robust ferromagnetism and either in-plane or out-of plane easy axes with small barriers for magnetization reorientation by phosphorous alloying with y< 6at% or y> 6at%. The critical temperatures are not significantly increased by the P al…

The introduction and control of ferromagnetism in graphene opens up a range of new directions for fundamental and applied studies. Several approaches have been pursued so far, such as introduction of defects, functionalization with adatoms, and shaping of graphene into nanoribbons with well-defined zigzag edges. A more robust and less invasive method utilizes the introduction of an exchange interaction by a ferromagnetic insulator in proximity with graphene. Here we present a direct measurement of the exchange interaction in room temperature ferromagnetic graphene. We study the spin transport …
Novel 2D ferromagnets with high Curie temperature and large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are especially attractive owing to the future promising application in modern spintronics, but meanwhile the 2D ferromagnetic materials with high Curie temperature and large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are rarely reported. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we predict a new kind of 2D ferromagnetic materials - GdB2N2, which possesses large magnetic moment, high Curie temperature (335 K) and large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (10.38 meV/f.u.). Biaxial strain ranging from …
Spin-related electronics using two dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials as a platform are believed to hold great promise for revolutionizing the next generation spintronics. Although many emerging new phenomena have been unravelled in 2D electronic systems with spin long-range orderings, the scarcely reported room temperature magnetic vdW material has thus far hindered the related applications. Here, we show that intrinsic ferromagnetically aligned spin polarization can hold up to 316 K in a metallic phase of 1$T$-CrTe$_{2}$ in the few-layer limit. This room temperature 2D long range…
Among Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides, mono and few-layers thick VSe2 has gained much recent attention following claims of intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in this system, which have nonetheless proved controversial. Here, we address the magnetic and chemical properties of Fe/VSe2 heterostructure by combining element sensitive absorption spectroscopy and photoemission spectroscopy. Our x-ray magnetic circular dichroism results confirm recent findings that both native mono/few-layer and bulk VSe2 do not show any signature of an intrinsic ferromagnetic ordering. Nonetheless, we find th…
Van der Waals material Fe$_5$GeTe$_2$, with its long-range ferromagnetic ordering near room temperature, has significant potential to become an enabling platform for implementing novel spintronic and quantum devices. To pave the way for applications, it is crucial to determine the magnetic properties when the thickness of Fe5GeTe2 reaches the few-layers regime. However, this is highly challenging due to the need for a characterization technique that is local, highly sensitive, artifact-free, and operational with minimal fabrication. Prior studies have indicated that Curie temperature TC can re…
Two-dimensional (2D) Van der Waals ferromagnets carry the promise of ultimately miniature spintronics and information storage devices. Among the newly discovered 2D ferromagnets all inherit the magnetic ordering from their bulk ancestors. Here we report a new 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor at room temperature, 2H phase vanadium diselenide (VSe2) which show ferromagnetic at 2D form only. This unique 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor manifests an enhanced magnetic ordering owing to structural anisotropy at 2D limit.
The intensity and the giant circular polarization of edge luminescence in a longitudinal magnetic field have been measured in nitrogen alloys GaAsN under circularly polarized pumping. It has been found that these dependences are shifted with respect to zero field by a value Beff. The magnitude of the internal field Beff increases with increase in pumping intensity and reaches saturation (~250 Gauss) at great densities of excitation. The saturation of the Beff field with growth of pumping indicates that this is a field of nuclei, polarized dynamically due to hyperfine interaction with optically…
We have measured the spin injection efficiency and spin lifetime in Co$_2$FeSi/$n$-GaAs lateral nonlocal spin valves from 20 to 300 K. We observe large ($\sim$40 $μ$V) spin valve signals at room temperature and injector currents of $10^3~$A/cm$^2$, facilitated by fabricating spin valve separations smaller than the 1 $μ$m spin diffusion length and applying a forward bias to the detector contact. The spin transport parameters are measured by comparing the injector-detector contact separation dependence of the spin valve signal with a numerical model accounting for spin drift and diffusion. The a…
