High energy emission from blazars is thought to arise in a relativistic jet launched by a supermassive black hole. The emission site must be far from the hole and the jet relativistic, in order to avoid absorption of the photons. In extreme cases, rapid variability of the emission suggests that structures of length-scale smaller than the gravitational radius of the central black hole are imprinted on the jet as it is launched, and modulate the radiation released after it has been accelerated to high Lorentz factor. We propose a mechanism which can account for the acceleration of the jet, and for the rapid variability of the radiation, based on the propagation characteristics of large-amplitude waves in charge-starved, polar jets. Using a two-fluid (electron-positron) description, we find the outflows exhibit a delayed acceleration phase, that starts at roughly 1pc, where the inertia associated with the wave currents becomes important. The time-structure imprinted on the jet at launch modulates photons produced by the accelerating jet provided the pair multiplicity in the black-hole magnetosphere is sufficiently small, suggesting that very rapid variability is confined to sources in which the electromagnetic cascade in the black-hole magnetosphere is not prolific.
Relativistic jets of active galactic nuclei have been known to exist for 100 years. Blazars with their jet pointing close to our line of sight are some of the most variable and extreme objects in the universe, showing emission from radio to very-high-energy gamma rays. In this review, we cover relativistic jets of blazars from an observational perspective with the main goal of discussing how observations can be used to constrain theoretical models. We cover a range of topics from multiwavelength observations to imaging of jets with a special emphasis on current open questions in the field.
In this work I review the observational constraints imposed on the energetics and magnetisation of quasar jets, in the context of theoretical expectations. The discussion is focused on issues regarding the jet production efficiency, matter content, and particle acceleration. I show that if the ratio of electron-positron-pairs to protons is of order $15$, as is required to achieve agreement between jet powers computed using blazar spectral fits and those computed using radio-lobe calorimetry, the magnetization of blazar jets in flat-spectrum-radio-quasars (FSRQ) must be significant. This result…
This paper presents a simple model of polarisation rotation in optically thin relativistic jets of blazars. The model is based on the development of helical (kink) mode of current-driven instability. A possible explanation is suggested for the observational connection between polarisation rotations and optical/gamma-ray flares in blazars, if the current-driven modes are triggered by secular increases of the total jet power. The importance of intrinsic depolarisation in limiting the amplitude of coherent polarisation rotations is demonstrated. The polarisation rotation amplitude is thus very se…
Context: Understanding the acceleration mechanism of astrophysical jets has been a cumbersome endeavor from both the theoretical and observational perspective. Although several breakthroughs have been achieved in recent years, on all sides, we are still missing a comprehensive model for the acceleration of astrophysical jets. Aims: In this work we attempt to construct a simple toy model that can account for several observational and theoretical results and allow us to probe different aspects of blazar jets usually inaccessible to observations. Methods: We used the toy model and Lorentz factor …
The most extreme active galactic nuclei (AGN) are the radio active ones whose relativistic jet propagates close to our line of sight. These objects were first classified according to their emission line features into flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs). More recently, observations revealed a trend between these objects known as the \emph{blazar sequence}, along with an anti-correlation between the observed power and the frequency of the synchrotron peak. In the present work, we propose a fairly simple idea that could account for the whole blazar population: al…
In this work, I present a qualitative discussion on the prospect of production of ultra-high photons in blazars. The sources are a subclass of active galactic nuclei which host supermassive black holes and fire relativistic jets into the intergalactic medium. The kpc scale jets are believed to be dominated by Poynting flux and constitute one of the most efficient cosmic particle accelerators, that potentially are capable of accelerating the particles up to EeV energies. Recent IceCube detection of astrophysical neutrino emission in coincidence with the enhanced gamma-ray from Tev blazar TXS 05…
A sample of 111 Fermi blazars each with a well-established radio core luminosity, broad-line luminosity, bolometric luminosity and black hole mass has been compiled from the literatures. We present a significant correlation between radio core and broad-line emission luminosities that supports a close link between accretion processes and relativistic jets. Analysis reveals a relationship of $\rm{LogL_{BLR}\sim(0.81\pm0.06)LogL_{R}^{C}}$ which is consistant with theoretical predicted coefficient and supports that blazar jets are powered by energy extraction from a rapidly spinning Kerr black hole…
Time-variable polarization is an extremely valuable observational tool to probe the dynamical physical conditions of blazar jets. Since 2008, we have been monitoring the flux and linear polarization of a sample of gamma-ray bright blazars at optical frequencies. Some of the observations were performed on nightly or intra-night time-scales in four optical bands, providing information on the frequency and time dependence of the polarization. The observed behavior is similar to that found in simulations of turbulent plasma in a relativistic jet that contains a standing shock and/or a helical back…
Electrons emitting non-thermal photons in blazars are possibly accelerated by turbulences developed in jets. In this paper, we consider the case so-called hard-sphere scattering as an interaction model between turbulences and electrons, in which the acceleration timescale is independent of the electron energy. We numerically simulate broad-band emission from blazar jets with a one-zone time-dependent code, taking into account the turbulence acceleration. Our model reproduces various blazar spectra with simple assumptions, such as constant particle injection rate, constant diffusion coefficient…
We describe and present initial results from a Fermi cycle 2 program designed to monitor the behavior of the centimeter-band linear polarization and total flux density emitted by gamma-ray-bright blazars during flaring. The goal of the program is to identify changes in the magnetic field structure in the radio jet associated with gamma-ray flaring and ultimately to test whether gamma-ray flaring is associated with the onset of shocks in the radio jet. Light curves illustrating radio band variability patterns are shown for sample program sources.
IceCube has detected a cumulative flux of PeV neutrinos, which origin is unknown. Blazars, active galactic nuclei with relativistic jets pointing to us, are long and widely expected to be one of the strong candidates of high energy neutrino sources. The neutrino production depends strongly on the cosmic ray power of blazar jets, which is largely unknown. The recent null results in stacking searches of neutrinos for several blazar samples by IceCube put upper limits on the neutrino fluxes from these blazars. Here we compute the cosmic ray power and PeV neutrino flux of Fermi-LAT blazars, and fi…
Polarization offers a unique view in the physical processes of astrophysical jets. We report on optical circular polarization observations of two famous blazars, namely 3C 279 and PKS 1510-089, at high linearly polarized states. This is the first time PKS 1510-089 is observed in optical circular polarization. While only upper limits can be extracted from our observing campaign, the non-detection of optical circular polarization allows us to provide meaningful constraints on their magnetic field strength and jet composition. We find that high-energy emission models requiring high magnetic field…
The internal-shocks scenario in relativistic jets has been used to explain the variability of blazars' outflow emission. Recent simulations have shown that the magnetic field alters the dynamics of these shocks producing a whole zoo of spectral energy density patterns. However, the role played by magnetization in such high-energy emission is still not entirely understood. With the aid of \emph{Fermi}'s second LAT AGN catalog, a comparison with observations in the $γ$-ray band was performed, in order to identify the effects of the magnetic field.
X-ray polarization should provide new probes of magnetic field geometry and acceleration physics near the base of blazar jets, but near-future missions will have limited sensitivity. We thus use existing lower energy data and X-ray variability measurements in the context of a basic synchro-Compton model to predict the X-ray polarization level and the probability of detection success for individual sources, listing the most attractive candidates for an IXPE campaign. We find that, as expected, several high-peak blazars such as Mrk 421 can be easily measured in 100 ksec exposures. Most low peak …
Shocks in jets and hot spots of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are one prominent class of possible sources of very high energy cosmic ray particles (above 10^18eV). Extrapolating their spectrum to their plausible injection energy from some shock, implies an enormous hidden energy for a spectrum of index ~-2. Some analyzes suggest the particles' injection spectrum at source to be as steep as -2.4 to -2.7, making the problem much worse, by a factor of order 10^6. Nevertheless, it seems implausible that more than at the very best 1/3 of the jet energy, goes into the required flux of energetic parti…
Black holes, anywhere in the stellar-mass to supermassive range, are often associated with relativistic jets. Models suggest that jet production may be a universal process common in all black hole systems regardless of their mass. Although in many cases observations support such hypotheses for microquasars and Seyfert galaxies, little is known on whether boosted blazar jets also comply with such universal scaling laws. We use uniquely rich multiwavelength radio light curves from the F-GAMMA program and the most accurate Doppler factors available to date to probe blazar jets in their emission r…
MAGIC has been performing optically triggered Target of Opportunity observations of flaring blazars since the beginning of its scientific operations. The alerts of flaring blazars originate from Tuorla Blazar Monitoring Programme, which started the optical monitoring of candidtate TeV blazars in 2002 and has now collected up to eight years of data on more than 60 blazars. These ToO observations have resulted in the discovery of five new VHE gamma-ray emitting blazars (S5 0716+714, 1ES 1011+496, Mrk 180, ON 325 and B3 2247+381). In addition part of the discovery of BL Lac and the discovery of 3…
The observation of a very-high-energy neutrino by IceCube (IceCube-170922A) and its association with the flaring blazar TXS 0506+056 provided the first multimessenger observations of blazar jets, demonstrating the important role of protons in their dynamics and emission. In this paper, we present SOPRANO (https://www.amsdc.am/soprano), a new conservative implicit kinetic code which follows the time evolution of the isotropic distribution functions of protons, neutrons and the secondaries produced in photo-pion and photo-pair interactions, alongside with the evolution of photon and electron/pos…
Luminosities of many powerful blazars are strongly dominated by $γ$-rays which most likely result from Comptonization of radiation produced outside a jet. This observation sets certain constraints on composition and energetics of the jet as well as the surrounding quasar environment. We study the dependence of a Compton dominance on a jet magnetization (the magnetic-to-matter energy flux) and on the location of the 'blazar zone'. Calculations are performed for two geometries of broad-emission-line and hot-dust regions: spherical and planar. The jet magnetization corresponding to the large obse…
X-ray polarimetry promises us an unprecedented look at the structure of magnetic fields and on the processes at the base of acceleration of particles up to ultrarelativistic energies in relativistic jets. Crucial pieces of information are expected from observations of blazars (that are characterized by the presence of a jet pointing close to the Earth), in particular of the subclass defined by a synchrotron emission extending to the X-ray band (so-called high synchrotron peak blazars, HSP). In this review, I give an account of some of the models and numerical simulations developed to predict t…
The multi-wavelength spectral and temporal variability observed in blazars set tight constraints on current theoretical emission models. Here, we investigate the relativistic magnetic reconnection process as a source of blazar emission in which quasi-spherical plasmoids, containing relativistic particles and magnetic fields, are associated with the emission sites in blazar jets. By coupling recent two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of relativistic reconnection with a time-dependent radiative transfer code, we compute the non-thermal emission from a chain of plasmoids formed during a …
The internal shocks scenario in relativistic jets is used to explain the variability of the blazar emission. Recent studies have shown that the magnetic field significantly alters the shell collision dynamics, producing a variety of spectral energy distributions and light-curves patterns. However, the role played by magnetization in such emission processes is still not entirely understood. In this work we numerically solve the magnetohydodynamic evolution of the magnetized shells collision, and determine the influence of the magnetization on the observed radiation. Our procedure consists in sy…
We use published data on the power and production efficiency of jets in blazars with double radio lobes in order to compare results obtained using different methods. In order to eliminate selection effects, we use cross-matched sub-samples containing only luminous blazars. We compare the three main existing methods, namely those based on the emission of radio lobes, on spectral fitting, and on radio core shift. We find the average jet power obtained for identical samples with the radio-lobe method is $\sim10$ times lower than that from the spectral fitting. In turn, the power from spectral fit…
Low ($\lesssim 1\%$) levels of circular polarization (CP) detected at radio frequencies in the relativistic jets of some blazars can provide insight into the underlying nature of the jet plasma. CP can be produced through linear birefringence, in which initially linearly polarized emission produced in one region of the jet is altered by Faraday rotation as it propagates through other regions of the jet with varying magnetic field orientation. Marscher has begun a study of jets with such magnetic geometries using the Turbulent Extreme Multi-Zone (TEMZ) model, in which turbulent plasma crossing …
Detection of blazar pc scale counter-jets is difficult, but it can provide invaluable insight into the relativistic effects, radiative processes and the complex mechanisms of jet production, collimation and accelation in blazars. We build on recent populations models (optimized using the MOJAVE apparent velocity and redshift distributions) in order to derive the distribution of jet-to-counter-jet ratios and the flux densities of the counter-jet at different frequencies, in an effort to set minimum sensitivity limits required for existing and future telescope arrays in order to detect these elu…
Extreme BL Lacs (EHBL) form a subclass of blazars which challenge standard emission scenarios. In a recent study it has been argued that their peculiar properties can be explained if emitting electrons are accelerated in a series of oblique shocks induced by the recollimation of the relativistic jet. However, new 3D simulations of recollimated, weakly magnetized jets reveal that, in correspondence with the first recollimation shock, the flow develops a rapidly growing instability, becomes highly turbulent and decelerates, effectively hampering the formation of the multiple shock structure rout…
In any flux-density limited sample of blazars, the distribution of the timescale modulation factor $Δt'/Δt$, which quantifies the change in observed timescales compared to the rest-frame ones due to redshift and relativistic compression follows an exponential distribution with a mean depending on the flux limit of the sample. In this work we produce the mathematical formalism that allows us to use this information in order to uncover the underlining rest-frame probability density function of measurable timescales of blazar jets. We extensively test our proposed methodology using a simulated FS…
Mildly-relativistic shocks that are embedded in colliding magnetohydrodynamic flows are prime sites for relativistic particle acceleration and production of strongly variable, polarized multi-wavelength emission from relativistic jet sources such as blazars and gamma-ray bursts. The principal energization mechanisms at these shocks are diffusive shock acceleration and shock drift acceleration. In recent work, we had self-consistently coupled shock acceleration and radiation transfer simulations in blazar jets in a basic one-zone scenario. These one-zone models revealed that the observed spectr…
We describe the theory of Fermi-type acceleration, including first-order Fermi acceleration at a parallel shock front and second-order Fermi acceleration in a test particle limit. Including the theory of the turbulent acceleration and the derivation of the general Fokker-Planck equation, we take into account the basic particle-transport equation and the Fokker-Planck equation with spatially homogeneous isotropic distribution. In the cases of some special physical processes, we construct the particle-transport equations, and compile the analytical or semi-analytical solutions in 11 different ca…
Blazars exhibit flares across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Many $γ$-ray flares are highly correlated with flares detected at longer wavelengths; however, a small subset appears to occur in isolation, with little or no correlated variability at longer wavelengths. These "orphan" $γ$-ray flares challenge current models of blazar variability, most of which are unable to reproduce this type of behavior. Macdonald et al. have developed the Ring of Fire model to explain the origin of orphan $γ$-ray flares from within blazar jets. In this model, electrons contained within a blob of plasma mov…
Observations of blazar jets are shrouded in relativistic effects, thus hindering our understanding of their intrinsic properties and dominant physical processes responsible for their generation, evolution, radiation and particle emission. In this work we focus on extracting information about timescales in the jet rest frame using a population-modeling approach. We employ Monte Carlo simulations to derive a simple population model for the intrinsic unbeamed luminosities and the Lorentz $Γ$ of blazar jets that adequately describe the observed redshift and apparent superluminal speed distributions…
The fast TeV variability of the blazars Mrk 501 and PKS 2155--304 implies a compact emitting region that moves with a bulk Lorentz factor of Gamma_{em}~100 toward the observer. The Lorentz factor is clearly in excess of the jet Lorentz factors Gamma_j\simless 10 measured on sub-pc scales in these sources. We propose that the TeV emission originates from compact emitting regions that move relativistically {\it within} a jet of bulk Gamma_j~10. This can be physically realized in a Poynting flux-dominated jet. We show that if a large fraction of the luminosity of the jet is prone to magnetic diss…
The uncharted territory of the high-redshift ($z\gtrsim3$) Universe holds the key to understand the evolution of quasars. In an attempt to identify the most extreme members of the quasar population, i.e., blazars, we have carried out a multi-wavelength study of a large sample of radio-loud quasars beyond $z=3$. Our sample consists of 9 $γ$-ray detected blazars and 133 candidate blazars selected based on the flatness of their soft X-ray spectra (0.3$-$10 keV photon index $\leq1.75$), including 15 with NuSTAR observations. The application of the likelihood profile stacking technique reveals that…
We derive the most up-to-date Swift-Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) blazar luminosity function in the 14-195 keV range, making use of a clean sample of 118 blazars detected in the BAT 105-month survey catalog, with newly obtained redshifts from the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). We determine the best-fit X-ray luminosity function for the whole blazar population, as well as for Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs) alone. The main results are: (1) at any redshift, BAT detects the most luminous blazars, above any possible break in their luminosity distribution, which means we cannot differentiat…
Since the mid-1980s the shock-in-jet model has been the preferred paradigm to explain radio-band flaring in blazar jets. We describe our radiative transfer model incorporating relativistically-propagating shocks, and illustrate how the 4.8, 8, and 14.5 GHz linear polarization and total flux density data from the University of Michigan monitoring program, in combination with the model, constrain jet flow conditions and shock attributes. Results from strong Fermi-era flares in 4 blazars with widely-ranging properties are presented. Additionally, to investigate jet evolution on decadal time scale…
Diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at relativistic shocks is widely thought to be an important acceleration mechanism in various astrophysical jet sources, including radio-loud active galactic nuclei such as blazars. Such acceleration can produce the non-thermal particles that emit the broadband continuum radiation that is detected from extragalactic jets. An important recent development for blazar science is the ability of Fermi-LAT spectroscopy to pin down the shape of the distribution of the underlying non-thermal particle population. This paper highlights how multi-wavelength spectra spann…
We have carried out the Gaussian model-fitting to the 15 GHz VLBA cores for a sample of blazars from the MOJAVE database, analyzed the correlations in the model-fitted parameters and studied the variability properties for different group of sources. We find that the Fermi LAT-detected blazars have on average higher position angle changes of cores than the LAT non-detected blazars, and that the LAT-detected ones largely associate with more variable cores in flux density.
The evidence for joint gamma and neutrino emission from the blazar TXS 0506+056 has renewed interest in blazars as neutrino sources. The detection of neutrinos from blazars can be seen as the smoking gun for the presence of relativistic protons in blazar's jets, and can thus help identify blazars, and active galactic nuclei in general, as cosmic-ray accelerators. In this contribution I first introduce blazars and blazar hadronic models, and then present the results of the multi-messenger modeling of both the 2017 gamma-neutrino flare, and the 2014-2015 neutrino-only flare of TXS 0506+056. For …
Blazars show variability on timescales ranging from minutes to years, the former being comparable to and in some cases even shorter than the light-crossing time of the central black hole. The observed gamma-ray lightcurves can be described by a power-law power density spectrum (PDS), with a similar index for both BL Lacs and flat-spectrum radio quasars. We show that this variability can be produced by turbulence in relativistic jets launched by magnetically arrested accretion flows (MADs). We perform radiative transport calculations on the turbulent, highly-magnetized jet launching region of a…
Here we report our recent study on the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the high frequency BL Lac object Mrk 421 in different luminosity states. We used a full-fledged chi2-minimization procedure instead of more commonly used "eyeball" fit to model the observed flux of the source (from optical to very high energy), with a Synchrotron-Self-Compton (SSC) emission mechanism. Our study shows that the synchrotron power and peak frequency remain constant with varying source activity, and the magnetic field decreases with the source activity while the break energy of electron spectrum and the Do…
We fit the (quasi-)simultaneous multi-waveband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for a sample of low-synchrotron-peaked (LSP) blazars with a one-zone leptonic model. The seed photons that predominantly come from broad line region (BLR) and infrared (IR) molecular torus are considered respectively in external Compton process. We find that the modeling with IR seed photons is systematically better than that with BLR photons based on a $χ^2$ test, which suggest that $γ$-ray emitting region most possibly stay outside the BLR. The minimum electron Lorentz factor, $γ_{\rm min}$, is constrained fr…
It has been proposed that blazar jets are structured, with a fast spine surrounded by a slower sheath or layer. This structured jet model explains some properties of their emission and morphology. Because of their relative motion, the radiation produced by one component is seen amplified by the other, thus enhancing the inverse Compton emission of both. Radiation is emitted anisotropically in the comoving frames, and causes the emitting plasma to recoil. As seen in the observer frame, this corresponds to a deceleration of the fastest component (the spine) and an acceleration of the slower one …
There are still some important unanswered questions about the detailed particle acceleration and escape occurring during the quiescent epoches. As a result, the particle distribution that is adopted in the blazar quiescent spectral model have numerous unconstrained shapes. To help remedy this problem, we introduce a analytical particle transport model to reproduce quiescent broadband spectral energy distribution of blazar. In this model, the exact electron distribution is solved from a generalized transport equation that contains the terms describing first-order and secondary-order \emph{Fermi…
A time-dependent Synchrotron Self Compton model (SSC) which is able to motivate the used electron spectra of many SSC models as a balance of acceleration and radiative losses is introduced. Using stochastic acceleration as well as Fermi-I processes even electron spectra with a rising part can be explained, which are mandatory to fit the lowstate spectral energy distribution (SED) of PKS 2155-304 as constrained from Fermi LAT observations. Due to the time resolution the outburst of PKS 2155-304 observed by H.E.S.S. in 2006 can be modelled selfconsistently as fluctuations along the jet axis with…
(abridged) Relativistic jets, formed in the vicinity of central supermassive black holes in AGN, show ample evidence connecting them to physical conditions in the accretion disc and broad-line region. The jets are responsible for a large fraction of non-thermal continuum emission (particularly during powerful flares), which makes understanding their physics an important aspect of studies of blazars characterised by profound flaring activity arising from extremely compact regions. Imaging and polarimetry of radio emission on milliarcsecond scales provided by very long baseline interferometry (V…
Blazars, a class of active galaxies whose jets are relativistic and collimated flows of plasma directed along the line of sight and are prone to a slew of magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities. We aim to study the interplay of radiation and particle acceleration processes in regulating the multi-band emission and variability signatures from blazars. In particular, the goal is to decipher the impact of shocks arising due to MHD instabilities in driving the longterm variable emission signatures from blazars. In this regard, we have performed RMHD simulations of a representative section of bla…
Diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at relativistic shocks is likely to be an important acceleration mechanism in various astrophysical jet sources, including radio-loud AGN. An important recent development for blazar science is the ability of Fermi-LAT data to pin down the power-law index of the high energy portion of emission in these sources, and therefore also the index of the underlying non-thermal particle population. This diagnostic potential was not possible prior to Fermi launch, when gamma-ray information was dominated by the highly-absorbed TeV band. This paper highlights how multiwa…
Analysis of comprehensive monitoring of 34 gamma-ray bright quasars, BL Lac objects, and radio galaxies reveals a close connection between events in the millimeter-wave emission imaged with the VLBA at 43 GHz and flares at gamma-ray and lower frequencies. Roughly 2/3 of the flares are coincident with the appearance of a new superluminal knot and/or a flare in the millimeter-wave "core'" located parsecs from the central engine. This presents a theoretical challenge to explain how the gamma-ray flux can often be variable on intra-day time-scales. Possible answers to this include very narrow open…
Long-lasting, very bright multiwavelength flares of blazar jets are a curious phenomenon. The interaction of a large gas cloud with the jet of a blazar may serve as a reservoir of particles entrained by the jet. The size and density structure of the cloud then determine the duration and strength of the particle injection into the jet and the subsequent radiative outburst of the blazar. In this presentation, a comprehensive parameter study is provided showing the rich possibilities that this model offers. Additionally, we use this model to explain the 4-months long, symmetrical flare of the fla…
In this presentation, we report the results of intraday variability in the optical (BVRI bands) and hard X-ray band (3-79 keV) in a number of blazars. In the optical microvariability studies of the blazars S5 0716+714 and BL Lac, we observed many interesting features such as rapid variability, large variability amplitude, presence of characteristic timescales, bluer-when-brighter achromatic behavior, and single power-law power spectral density. In {\it NuSTAR} observations of several blazars, using spectral and timing analysis, we found similar features consistent with the optical studies. In …
We have not identified for sure what is the mechanism launching, accelerating and collimating relativistic jets. The two most likely possibilities are the gravitational energy of the accreting matter or the rotational energy of a spinning black hole. Even the evaluation of the jet power is not trivial, since the radiation from the jet is enhanced by relativistic beaming, and there are fundamental uncertainties concerning the matter content of the jet (electron--proton or electron--positron plasma). However, in recent years, there have been crucial advances mainly driven by the richness of data…
The innermost parts of powerful jets in active galactic nuclei are surrounded by dense, high-velocity clouds from the broad-line region, which may penetrate into the jet and lead to the formation of a strong shock. Such jet-cloud interactions are expected to have measurable effects on the $γ$-ray emission from blazars. We characterise the dynamics of a typical cloud-jet interaction scenario, and the evolution of its radiative output in the 0.1-30~GeV energy range, to assess to what extent these interactions can contribute to the $γ$-ray emission in blazars. We use semi-analytical descriptions …
A recent progress in the study of $γ$-ray jets is reviewed, with a focus on some theoretical interpretations of the VHE emission from M87, and possibly other misaligned blazars; the connection betwe en the GeV breaks exhibited by bright LAT blazars and opacity sources in the broad line region; the consequences of the detection of GeV emission from GRBs to models of magnetic outf lows; and the implications of the thermal emission observed is some GRBs to dissipation of the outflow bulk energy.
