We consider dissipative dynamical systems represented by a smooth compressible flow in a finite domain. The density evolves according to the continuity (Liouville) equation. For a general, non-degenerate flow the result of the infinite time evolution of an initially smooth density is a singular measure. We give a condition for the non-degeneracy which allows to decide for a given flow whether the infinite time limit is singular. The condition uses a Green-Kubo type formula for the space-averaged sum of forward and backward-in-time Lyapunov exponents. We discuss how the sums determine the fluctuations of the entropy production rate in the SRB state and give examples of computation of the sums for certain velocity fields.
The conditional Lyapunov exponent is defined for investigating chaotic synchronization, in particular complete synchronization and generalized synchronization. We find that the conditional Lyapunov exponent is expressed as a formula in terms of ergodic theory. Dealing with this formula, we find what factors characterize the conditional Lyapunov exponent in chaotic systems.
Nowadays the Lyapunov exponents and Lyapunov dimension have become so widespread and common that they are often used without references to the rigorous definitions or pioneering works. It may lead to a confusion since there are at least two well-known definitions, which are used in computations: the upper bounds of the exponential growth rate of the norms of linearized system solutions (Lyapunov characteristic exponents, LCEs) and the upper bounds of the exponential growth rate of the singular values of the fundamental matrix of linearized system (Lyapunov exponents, LEs). In this work the rel…
This work presents numerical evidences that for discrete dynamical systems with one positive Lyapunov exponent the decay of the distance autocorrelation is always related to the Lyapunov exponent. Distinct decay laws for the distance autocorrelation are observed for different systems, namely exponential decays for the quadratic map, logarithmic for the Hénon map and power-law for the conservative standard map. In all these cases the decay exponent is close to the positive Lyapunov exponent. For hyperbolic conservative systems, the power-law decay of the distance autocorrelation tends to be gui…
We show the first solvable chaotic synchronization model of unidirectionally coupled dynamical systems. We establish a new interpretation of the conditional Lyapunov exponent that characterizes chaotic synchronization completely. Moreover, we newly show how the conditional Lyapunov exponent relates to common noise-induced synchronization phenomena by the new interpretation.
The deterministic equations describing the dynamics of the atmosphere (and of the climate system) are known to display the property of sensitivity to initial conditions. In the ergodic theory of chaos this property is usually quantified by computing the Lyapunov exponents. In this review, these quantifiers computed in a hierarchy of atmospheric models (coupled or not to an ocean) are analyzed, together with their local counterparts known as the local or finite-time Lyapunov exponents. It is shown in particular that the variability of the local Lyapunov exponents (corresponding to the dominant …
In this paper the Benettin-Wolf algorithm to determine all Lyapunov exponents for a class of fractional-order systems modeled by Caputo's derivative and the corresponding Matlab code are presented. First it is proved that the considered class of fractional-order systems admits the necessary variational system necessary to find the Lyapunov exponents. The underlying numerical method to solve the extended system of fractional order, composed of the initial value problem and the variational system, is the predictor-corrector Adams-Bashforth-Moulton for fractional differential equations. The Matla…
We show that the Lyapunov exponents of a periodic orbit can be easily obtained from the eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix. It turns out that the Lyapunov exponents of simply stable periodic orbits are all zero, simply unstable periodic orbits have only one positive Lyapunov exponent, doubly unstable periodic orbits have two different positive Lyapunov exponents and the two positive Lyapunov exponents of complex unstable periodic orbits are equal. We present a numerical example for periodic orbits in a realistic galactic potential. Moreover, the center manifold theorem allowed us to show that…
We give lower and upper bounds on both the Lyapunov exponent and generalised Lyapunov exponents for the random product of positive and negative shear matrices. These types of random products arise in applications such as fluid stirring devices. The bounds, obtained by considering invariant cones in tangent space, give excellent accuracy compared to standard and general bounds, and are increasingly accurate with increasing shear. Bounds on generalised exponents are useful for testing numerical methods, since these exponents are difficult to compute in practice.
