We establish global Gaussian estimates for the Green's matrix of divergence form, second order parabolic systems in a cylindrical domain under the assumption that weak solutions of the system vanishing on a portion of the boundary satisfy a certain local boundedness estimate and a local Hölder estimate. From these estimates, we also derive global estimates for the Green's matrix for elliptic systems with bounded measurable coefficients in two dimensional domains. We present a unified approach valid for both the scalar and vectorial cases and discuss several applications of our result.
We present a refined Green's function estimate of the time measurable parabolic operators on conic domains that involves mixed weights consisting of appropriate powers of the distance to the vertex and of the distance to the boundary.
In the present note, we give a concise proof for the equivalence between the local boundedness property for parabolic Dirichlet BVP's and the gaussian upper bound for their Green functions. The parabolic equations we consider are of general divergence form and our proof is essentially based on the gaussian upper bound by Daners \cite{Da} and a Caccioppoli's type inequality. We also show how the same analysis enables us to get a weaker version of the local boundedness property for parabolic Neumann BVP's assuming that the corresponding Green functions satisfy a gaussian upper bound.
We establish existence and various estimates of fundamental matrices and Green's matrices for divergence form, second order strongly parabolic systems in arbitrary cylindrical domains under the assumption that solutions of the systems satisfy an interior Hölder continuity estimate. We present a unified approach valid for both the scalar and the vectorial cases.
In this paper, we review some results over the last 10-15 years on elliptic and parabolic equations with discontinuous coefficients. We begin with an approach given by N. V. Krylov to parabolic equations in the whole space with VMO$_x$ coefficients. We then discuss some subsequent development including elliptic and parabolic equations with coefficients which are allowed to be merely measurable in one or two space directions, weighted $L_p$ estimates with Muckenhoupt ($A_p$) weights, non-local elliptic and parabolic equations, as well as fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations.
The aim of this paper is to investigate Green's function for parabolic and elliptic systems satisfying a possibly nonlocal Robin-type boundary condition. We construct Green's function for parabolic systems with time-dependent coefficients satisfying a possibly nonlocal Robin-type boundary condition assuming that weak solutions of the system are locally Hölder continuous in the interior of the domain, and as a corollary we construct Green's function for elliptic system with a Robin-type condition. Also, we obtain Gaussian bound for Robin Green's function under an additional assumption that weak…
We study a modified version of an initial-boundary value problem describing the formation of colony patterns of bacteria \textit{Escherichia Coli}. The original system of three parabolic equations was studied numerically and analytically and gave insights into the underlying mechanisms of chemotaxis. We focus here on the parabolic-elliptic-parabolic approximation and the hyperbolic-elliptic-parabolic limiting system which describes the case of pure chemotactic movement without random diffusion. We first construct local-in-time solutions for the parabolic-elliptic-parabolic system. Then we prov…
Based on the fact that the Neumann Green function can be constructed as a perturbation of the fundamental solution by a single-layer potential, we establish gaussian two-sided bounds for the Neumann Green function for a general parabolic operator. We build our analysis on classical tools coming from the construction of a fundamental solution of a general parabolic operator by means of the so-called parametrix method. At the same time we provide a simple proof for the gaussian two-sided bounds for the fundamental solution. We also indicate how our method can be adapted to get a gaussian lower b…
We introduce elliptic and parabolic $\mathcal{B}_{1}$ classes that generalize the well-known $\mathfrak{B}_{p}$ classes of DeGiorgi, Ladyzhenskaya and Ural'tseva with $p>1$. New classes are applied to prove pointwise continuity of solutions of elliptic and parabolic equations with nonstandard growth conditions. Our considerations cover new cases of variable exponent and $(p, q)$-phase growth including the ,,singular-degenerate'' parabolic case $p<2<q$.
An $L_{p}$-theory of divergence and non-divergence form elliptic and parabolic equations is presented. The main coefficients are supposed to belong to the class $VMO_{x}$, which, in particular, contains all functions independent of $x$. Weak uniqueness of the martingale problem associated with such equations is obtained.
We give sufficient conditions under which the convergence of finite difference approximations in the space variable of possibly degenerate second order parabolic and elliptic equations can be accelerated to any given order of convergence by Richardson's method.
We construct radial self-similar solutions of the, so called, minimal parabolic-elliptic Keller--Segel model in several space dimensions with radial, nonnegative initial conditions with are below the Chandrasekhar solution -- the singular stationary solution of this system.
We prove weighted and mixed-norm Sobolev estimates for fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations in the whole space under a relaxed convexity condition with almost VMO dependence on space-time variables. The corresponding interior and boundary estimates are also obtained.
In this paper we develop a Fefferman-Stein theorem, a Hardy-Littlewood theorem and sharp function estimations in weighted Sobolev spaces. We also provide uniqueness and existence results for second-order elliptic and parabolic partial differential systems in weighed Sobolev spaces.
We investigate existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of fractional parabolic equations satisfying prescribed pointwise conditions at infinity (in space), which can be time- dependent. Moreover, we study the asymptotic behaviour of such solutions. We also consider solutions of elliptic equations satisfying appropriate conditions at infinity.
We establish Schauder estimates for both divergence and non-divergence form second-order elliptic and parabolic equations involving Hölder semi-norms not with respect to all, but only with respect to some of the independent variables.
We study second order equations and systems on non-Lipschitz domains including mixed boundary conditions. The key result is interpolation for suitable function spaces. From this, elliptic and parabolic regularity results are deduced by means of Sneiberg's isomorphism theorem.
We consider the situation when an elliptic problem in a subdomain $Ω_1$ of an $n$-dimensional bounded domain $Ω$ is coupled via inhomogeneous canonical transmission conditions to a parabolic problem in $Ω\setminusΩ_1$. In particular, we can treat elliptic-parabolic equations in bounded domains with discontinuous coefficients. Using Fourier multiplier techniques, we prove an a priori estimate for strong solutions to the equations in $L^p$-Sobolev spaces.
We prove the solvability in Sobolev spaces $W^{1,2}_p$, $p>d+1$, of the terminal-boundary value problem for a class of fully nonlinear parabolic equations, including parabolic Bellman's equations, in bounded cylindrical domains with VMO ``coefficients''. The solvability in $W^{2}_p$, $p>d$, of the corresponding elliptic boundary-value problem is also obtained.
We prove the natural weighted Calderón and Zygmund estimates for solutions to elliptic and parabolic obstacle problems in nondivergence form with discontinuous coefficients and irregular obstacles. We also obtain Morrey regularity results for the Hessian of the solutions and Hölder continuity of the gradient of the solutions.
In this work, we shall study the nonlinear inverse problems of recovering the Robin coefficients in elliptic and parabolic systems of second order, and establish their local Lipschitz stabilities. Some local Lipschitz stability was derived for an elliptic inverse Robin problem. We shall first restructure the arguments in \cite{chou04} for the local Lipschitz stability so that the stability follows from three basic conditions for the elliptic inverse Robin problem. The new arguments are then generalized to help establish a novel local Lipschitz stability for parabolic inverse Robin problems.
In this paper we study the existence and partial regularity of weak solutions to an elliptic-parabolic system that models the single-phase miscible displacement of one incompressible fluid by another in a porous media. The system is singular and involves quadratic nonlinearity. A partial regularity result is obtained via the Fefferman-Stein inequality.
The aim of this article is to show how certain parabolic theorems follow from their elliptic counterparts. This technique is demonstrated through new proofs of five important theorems in parabolic unique continuation and the regularity theory of parabolic equations and geometric flows. Specifically, we give new proofs of an $L^2$ Carleman estimate for the heat operator, and the monotonicity formulas for the frequency function associated to the heat operator, the two-phase free boundary problem, the flow of harmonic maps, and the mean curvature flow. The proofs rely only on the underlying ellip…
In this paper, we study fully nonlinear second-order elliptic and parabolic equations with Neumann boundary conditions on compact Riemannian manifolds with smooth boundary. We derive oscillation bounds for admissible solutions with Neumann boundary condition $u_ν= ϕ(x)$ assuming the existence of suitable $\mathcal{C}$-subsolutions. We use a parabolic approach to derive a solution of a $k$-Hessian equation with Neumann boundary condition $u_ν= ϕ(x)$ under suitable assumptions.
We prove generalized Fefferman-Stein type theorems on sharp functions with $A_p$ weights in spaces of homogeneous type with either finite or infinite underlying measure. We then apply these results to establish mixed-norm weighted $L_p$-estimates for elliptic and parabolic equations/systems with (partially) BMO coefficients in regular or irregular domains.
We consider linear elliptic and parabolic equations with measurable coefficients and prove two types of $L_{p}$-estimates for their solutions, which were recently used in the theory of fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic second order equations in \cite{DKL}. The first type is an estimate of the $γ$th norm of the second-order derivatives, where $γ\in(0,1)$, and the second type deals with estimates of the resolvent operators in $L_{p}$ when the first-order coefficients are summable to an appropriate power.
Global existence and boundedness of classical solutions are shown for a parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system with local sensing when the motility function is assumed to be unbounded at infinity. The cornerstone of the proof is the derivation of $L^\infty$-estimates on the second component of the system and is achieved by various comparison arguments.
We discuss the problem how "bad" may be lower-order coefficients in elliptic and parabolic second order equations to ensure some qualitative properties of solution such as strong maximum principle, Harnack's inequality, Liouville's theorem. The answers are given in terms of the Lebesgue spaces and the Morrey spaces.
We establish global regularity for weak solutions to quasilinear divergence form elliptic and parabolic equations over Lipschitz domains with controlled growth conditions on low order terms. The leading coefficients belong to the class of BMO functions with small mean oscillations with respect to $x$.
We construct Green's functions for divergence form, second order parabolic systems in non-smooth time-varying domains whose boundaries are locally represented as graph of functions that are Lipschitz continuous in the spatial variables and 1/2-Hölder continuous in the time variable, under the assumption that weak solutions of the system satisfy an interior Hölder continuity estimate. We also derive global pointwise estimates for Green's function in such time-varying domains under the assumption that weak solutions of the system vanishing on a portion of the boundary satisfy a certain local bou…
We study boundary gradient estimates for second-order divergence type parabolic and elliptic systems in $C^{1,α}$ domains. The coefficients and data are assumed to be Hölder in the time variable and all but one spatial variables. This type of systems arises from the problems of linearly elastic laminates and composite materials.
Under various conditions, we establish Schauder estimates for both divergence and non-divergence form second-order elliptic and parabolic equations involving Hölder semi-norms not with respect to all, but only with respect to some of the independent variables. A novelty of our results is that the coefficients are allowed to be merely measurable with respect to the other independent variables.
In this paper second-order elliptic and parabolic partial differential systems are considered on $C^1$ domains. Existence and uniqueness results are obtained in terms of Sobolev spaces with weights so that we allow the derivatives of the solutions to blow up near the boundary. The coefficients of the systems are allowed to substantially oscillate or blow up near the boundary.
In this thesis, a unified approach to prove the boundedness of gradients of solutions to degenerate and singular elliptic and parabolic phi-Laplacian systems is presented. At first, a Cacciopoli-type energy inequality with an additional function f which can be chosen freely is proven. Then, Di Giorgi's method is applied using level sets which will lead to L-infinity-estimates on the gradient of the weak solution.
We present some comparison results for solutions to certain non local elliptic and parabolic problems that involve the fractional Laplacian operator and mixed boundary conditions, given by a zero Dirichlet datum on part of the complementary of the domain and zero Neumann data on the rest. These results represent a non local generalization of a Hopf's lemma for elliptic and parabolic problems with mixed conditions. In particular we prove the non local version of the results obtained by J. Dávila and J. Dávila-L. Dupaigne for the classical case respectively.
For a linear, strictly elliptic second order differential operator in divergence form with bounded, measurable coefficients on a Lipschitz domain $Ω$ we show that solutions of the corresponding elliptic problem with Robin and thus in particular with Neumann boundary conditions are Hoelder continuous for sufficiently $L^p$-regular right-hand sides. From this we deduce that the parabolic problem with Robin or Wentzell-Robin boundary conditions are well-posed on $\mathrm{C}(\barΩ)$.
In this paper we study the regularity of weak solutions to an elliptic-parabolic system modeling natural network formation. The system is singular and involves cubic nonlinearity. Our investigation reveals that weak solutions are Hölder continuous when the space dimension $N$ is $2$. This is achieved via an inequality associated with the Stummel-Kato class of functions and refinement of a lemma originally due to S. Campanato and C. B. Morrey (\cite{G}, p. 86).
We demonstrate a measure theoretical approach to the local regularity of weak supersolutions to elliptic and parabolic equations in divergence form. In the first part, we show that weak supersolutions become lower semicontinuous after redefinition on a set of measure zero. The proof relies on a general principle, i.e. the De Giorgi type lemma, which offers a unified approach for a wide class of elliptic and parabolic equations, including an anisotropic elliptic equation, the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation, and the porous medium equation. In the second part, we shall show that for parabolic pro…
We construct Green's functions for second order parabolic operators of the form $Pu=\partial_t u-{\rm div}({\bf A} \nabla u+ \boldsymbol{b}u)+ \boldsymbol{c} \cdot \nabla u+du$ in $(-\infty, \infty) \times Ω$, where $Ω$ is an open connected set in $\mathbb{R}^n$. It is not necessary that $Ω$ to be bounded and $Ω= \mathbb{R}^n$ is not excluded. We assume that the leading coefficients $\bf A$ are bounded and measurable and the lower order coefficients $\boldsymbol{b}$, $\boldsymbol{c}$, and $d$ belong to critical mixed norm Lebesgue spaces and satisfy the conditions $d-{\rm div} \boldsymbol{b} \…
We consider uniformly elliptic and parabolic second-order equations with bounded zeroth-order and bounded VMO leading coefficients and possibly growing first-order coefficients. We look for solutions which are summable to the $p$-th power with respect to the usual Lebesgue measure along with their first and second-order derivatives with respect to the spatial variable.
We prove mixed $L_{p}(L_{q})$-estimates, with $p,q\in(1,\infty)$, for higher-order elliptic and parabolic equations on the half space $\R^{d+1}_{+}$ with general boundary conditions which satisfy the Lopatinskii--Shapiro condition. We assume that the elliptic operators $A$ have leading coefficients which are in the class of vanishing mean oscillations in both the time and the space variable. In the proof, we produce mean oscillation estimates for equations on the half space with general boundary conditions.
We prove the unique solvability in weighted Sobolev spaces of non-divergence form elliptic and parabolic equations on a half space with the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. All the leading coefficients are assumed to be only measurable in the time variable and have small mean oscillations in the spatial variables. Our results can be applied to Neumann boundary value problems for {\em stochastic} partial differential equations with BMO$_x$ coefficients.
We prove Hölder continuity up to the boundary for solutions of quasi-linear degenerate elliptic problems in divergence form, not necessarily of variational type, on Lipschitz domains with Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. This includes the $p$-Laplace operator for all $p \in (1,\infty)$, but also operators with unbounded coefficients. Based on the elliptic result we show that the corresponding parabolic problem is well-posed in the space $C(\barΩ)$ provided that the coefficients satisfy a mild monotonicity condition. More precisely, we show that the realization of the elliptic operator in…
We introduce a notion of viscosity solutions for a general class of elliptic-parabolic phase transition problems. These include the Richards equation, which is a classical model in filtration theory. Existence and uniqueness results are proved via the comparison principle. In particular, we show existence and stability properties of maximal and minimal viscosity solutions for a general class of initial data. These results are new even in the linear case, where we also show that viscosity solutions coincide with the regular weak solutions introduced in [Alt&Luckhaus 1983].
We characterize an asymptotic mean value formula in the viscosity sense for the double phase elliptic equation $$ -{\rm div}(\lvert \nabla u \rvert^{p-2}\nabla u+ a(x)\lvert\nabla u \rvert^{q-2}\nabla u)=0 $$ and the normalized double phase parabolic equation $$ u_t=\lvert\nabla u \rvert ^{2-p}{\rm div}(\lvert \nabla u \rvert^{p-2}\nabla u+ a(x,t)\lvert\nabla u \rvert^{q-2}\nabla u), \quad 1<p\leq q<\infty. $$ This is the first mean value result for such kind of nonuniformly elliptic and parabolic equations. In addition, the results obtained can also be applied to the $p(x)$-Laplace equations …
