We present the abundance analysis of a sample of more than 120 red giants in the globular cluster (GC) NGC 1851, based on FLAMES spectra. We find a small but detectable metallicity spread. This spread is compatible with the presence of two different groups of stars with a metallicity difference of 0.06-0.08 dex, in agreement with earlier photometric studies. If stars are divided into these two groups according to their metallicity, both components show a Na-O anticorrelation (signature of a genuine GC nature) of moderate extension. The metal-poor stars are more concentrated than the metal-rich ones. We tentatively propose the hypothesis that NGC 1851 formed from a merger of two individual GCs with a slightly different Fe and alpha-element content, and possibly an age difference up to 1 Gyr. This is supported also by number ratios of stars on the split subgiant and on the bimodal horizontal branches. The distribution of n-capture process elements in the two components also supports the idea that the enrichment must have occurred in each of the structures separately, and not as a continuum of events in a single GC. The most probable explanation is that the proto-clusters formed into a (now dissolved) dwarf galaxy and later merged to produce the present GC.
We report the serendipitous young Large Magellanic Cloud cluster, NGC 1971, exhibits an extended main-sequence turnoff (eMSTO) possibly originated by mostly a real age spread. We used CT1 Washington photometry to produce a colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) with the fiducial cluster features. From its eMSTO, we estimated an age spread of ~ 170 Myr (observed age range 100-280 Myr), once observational errors, stellar binarity, overall metalicity variations and stellar rotation effects were subtracted in quadrature from the observed age width.
We present the results of a spectroscopic survey performed in the outskirts of the globular cluster NGC1851 with VIMOS@VLT. The radial velocities of 107 stars in a region between 12' and 33' around the cluster have been derived. We clearly identify the cluster stellar population over the entire field of view, indicating the presence of a significant fraction of stars outside the tidal radius predicted by King models. We also find tentative evidence of a cold (sigma_v< 20 km/s) peak in the distribution of velocities at v_r~180 km/s constituted mainly by Main Sequence stars whose location in the…
We report on the magnitude of the intrinsic [Fe/H] spread in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) intermediate-age massive clusters NGC 339, 361, Lindsay 1 and 113, respectively. In order to measure the cluster metallicity dispersions, we used accurate Stromgren photometry of carefully selected cluster red giant branch (RGB) stars. We determined the Fe-abundance spreads by employing a maximum likelihood approach. The spreads obtained using the more accurate photometry of the brighter RGB stars resulted to be marginal (~ 0.05+-0.03 dex) for NGC 339 and NGC 361, while for Lindsay 1 and Lindsay 113 w…
The very bright and compact massive young cluster, NGC 3603, has been cited as an example of a starburst in the Milky Way and compared with the much-studied R136/30 Doradus region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Here we build on the discovery by Mohr-Smith et al. (2017) of a large number of reddened O stars around this cluster. We construct a list of 288 candidate O stars with proper motions, in a region of sky spanning 1.5x1.5 square degrees centered on NGC 3603, by cross-matching the Mohr-Smith et al. (2017) catalogue with Gaia DR2 (Gaia Collaboration et al. 2018). This provides the basis for…
We present ALMA data on the 3mm continuum emission, CO isotopologues (12CO, 13CO, C18O), and high-density molecular tracers (HCN, HCO+, HNC, HNCO, CS, CN, and CH3OH) in NGC4526. These data enable a detailed study of the physical properties of the molecular gas in a longtime resident of the Virgo Cluster; comparisons to more commonly-studied spiral galaxies offer intriguing hints into the processing of molecular gas in the cluster environment. Many molecular line ratios in NGC4526, along with our inferred abundances and CO/H2 conversion factors, are similar to those found in nearby spirals. One…
[Abridged] The interstellar medium is observed to be organised in filamentary structures, as well as neutral (HI) and ionized (HII) bubbles. The expanding nature of these bubbles makes them shape their surroundings and possibly play a role in the formation and evolution of interstellar filaments. We present APEX $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O(2-1) observations of the NGC 6334 molecular cloud. We investigate the gas velocity structure along and across the 50 pc-long cloud and towards 75 identified velocity-coherent-filaments (VCFs). We measure a wealth of velocity gradients along the VCFs. We derive t…
As part of the Swift/UVOT Stars Survey, we present near-ultraviolet point-source photometry for 103 Galactic open clusters. These data, taken over the span of the mission, provide a unique and unprecedented set of near-ultraviolet point-source photometry on simple stellar populations. After applying membership analysis fueled mostly by GAIA DR2 proper motions, we find that 49 of these 103 have clear precise CMDs amenable to investigation. We compare the CMDs to theoretical isochrones and find good agreement between the theoretical isochrones and the CMDs. The exceptions are the fainter parts o…
We perform a detailed abundance analysis on integrated-light spectra of 20 globular clusters (GCs) in the early-type galaxy NGC 5128 (Centaurus A). The GCs were observed with X-Shooter on the VLT. The cluster sample spans a metallicity range of $-1.92 < $ [Fe/H] $< -0.13$ dex. Using theoretical isochrones we compute synthetic integrated-light spectra and iterate the individual abundances until the best fit to the observations is obtained. We measured abundances of Mg, Ca, and Ti, and find a slightly higher enhancement in NGC 5128 GCs with metallicities [Fe/H] < $-$0.75 dex, of the order of $\s…
We present a family of self-consistent axisymmetric rotating globular cluster models which are fitted to spectroscopic data for NGC 362, NGC 1851, NGC 2808, NGC 4372, NGC 5927 and NGC 6752 to provide constraints on their physical and kinematic properties, including their rotation signals. They are constructed by flattening Modified Plummer profiles, which have the same asymptotic behaviour as classical Plummer models, but can provide better fits to young clusters due to a slower turnover in the density profile. The models are in dynamical equilibrium as they depend solely on the action variabl…

We present a photometric study of the field lenticular galaxy NGC 4546 using Gemini/GMOS imaging in g'r'i'z'. We perform a 2D image decomposition of the surface brightness distribution of the galaxy using GALFIT, finding that four components adequately describe it. The subtraction of this model from our images and the construction of a colour map allow us to examine in great detail the asymmetric dust structures around the galactic centre. In addition, we perform a detailed analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system of NGC 4546. Using a Gaussian Mixture Model algorithm in the colour-colour p…
Long slit spectra recorded with GMOS on Gemini South are used to examine the star-forming history of the lenticular galaxy NGC 5102. Structural and supplemental photometric information are obtained from archival Spitzer [3.6] images. Comparisons with model spectra point to luminosity-weighted metallicities that are consistent with the colors of resolved red giant branch stars in the disk. The nucleus has a luminosity-weighted age at visible wavelengths of ~1 Gyr, and the integrated light is dominated by stars that formed over a time period of only a few hundred Myr. For comparison, the luminos…
We derive the first detailed chemical abundances of three star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), NGC1831 (436+/-22 Myr), NGC1856 (350+/-18 Myr) and [SL63]268 (1230+/-62 Myr) using integrated-light spectroscopic observations obtained with the Magellan Echelle spectrograph on Magellan Baade telescope. We derive [Fe/H], [Mg/Fe], [Ti/Fe], [Ca/Fe], [Ni/Fe], [Mn/Fe], [Cr/Fe] and [Na/Fe] for the three clusters. Overall, our results match the LMC abundances obtained in the literature as well as those predicted by detailed chemical evolution models. For clusters NGC1831 and NGC1856, the [Mg…
Since several years ago, the search for multiple populations (MPs) in Galactic open clusters (OCs) has become a field of increasing interest, particularly to the light of the general knowledge that MPs are observed in relatively massive clusters (>= 5 10^4 Mo). I report here measurements of stellar parameters and abundances of 17 different chemical species, including light and iron-peak elements of the old open cluster NGC188, from the APOGEE DR14 database. I selected 15 bonafide cluster red giants that reveal an spread in [Na/Fe] of +-0.16 dex, caused by two different groups of measurements w…
We have analyzed high-dispersion echelle spectra ($R \ga 50,000$) of red giant members for four open clusters to derive abundances for many elements. The spread in temperatures and gravities being very small among the red giants nearly the same stellar lines were employed thereby reducing the random errors. The errors of average abundance for the cluster were generally in 0.02 to 0.07 dex range. Our present sample covers galactocentric distances of 8.3 to 10.5 kpc. The [Fe/H] values are $-0.02\pm$0.05 for NGC 752, $-0.07\pm$0.06 for NGC 2360, $-0.11\pm$0.05 for NGC 1817 and $-0.19\pm$0.06 for …
Spectra of the intermediate age star cluster NGC 1978 and the dwarf irregular galaxies NGC 55 and NGC 3109 that span the 0.7 to 1.1um wavelength interval are discussed. The NGC 1978 spectra are used to examine stochastic effects on the integrated red light from an intermediate age cluster. The removal of either the brightest M giant or the brightest C star from the co-added NGC 1978 spectrum has minor effects on the equivalent withs of the Ca triplet. The most robust signature of C stars in the integrated cluster spectrum at these wavelengths is the CN band head near 0.79um. The equivalent wid…
The structure and kinematics of gaseous, disk-halo interfaces are imprinted with the processes that transfer mass, metals, and energy between galactic disks and their environments. We study the extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) layer in the interacting, star-forming galaxy NGC 5775 to better understand the consequences of star-formation feedback on the dynamical state of the thick-disk interstellar medium (ISM). Combining emission-line spectroscopy from the Robert Stobie Spectrograph on the Southern African Large Telescope with radio continuum observations from Continuum Halos in Nearby G…
[KKS2000]04 (NGC1052-DF2) has become a controversial and well-studied galaxy after the claims suggesting a lack of dark matter and the presence of an anomalously bright globular cluster (GC) system around it. A precise determination of its overall star formation history (SFH) as well as a better characterisation of its GC or planetary nebulae (PN) systems are crucial aspects to: i) understand its real nature, in particular placing it within the family of ultra diffuse galaxies; ii) shed light on its possible formation, evolution, and survival in the absence of dark matter. With this purpose we…
We present a detailed study of the Magellanic irregular galaxy NGC 4449 based on both archival and new photometric data from the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3. Thanks to its proximity ($D=3.82\pm 0.27$ Mpc) we reach stars 3 magnitudes fainter than the tip of the red giant branch in the F814W filter. The recovered star formation history spans the whole Hubble time, but due to the age-metallicity degeneracy of the red giant branch stars, it is robust only over the lookback time reached by our photometr…
Gas-rich galaxies in dense environments such as galaxy clusters and massive groups are affected by a number of possible types of interactions with the cluster environment, which make their evolution radically different than that of field galaxies. The dIrr galaxy NGC 1427A, presently infalling towards the core of the Fornax galaxy cluster, offers a unique opportunity to study those processes in a level of detail not possible to achieve for galaxies at higher redshifts. Using HST/ACS and auxiliary VLT/FORS ground-based observations, we study the properties of the most recent episodes of star fo…
We present results on the extra-tidal features of the Milky Way globular cluster NGC 7099, using deep gr photometry obtained with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam). We reached nearly 6 mag below the cluster Main Sequence (MS) turnoff, so that we dealt with the most suitable candidates to trace any stellar structure located beyond the cluster tidal radius. From star-by-star reddening corrected color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) we defined four adjacent strips along the MS, for which we built the respective stellar density maps, once the contamination by field stars was properly removed. The resulting…
NGC 55 ULX1 is a bright Ultraluminous X-ray source located 1.78 Mpc away. We analysed a sample of 20 Swift observations, taken between 2013 April and August, and two Chandra observations taken in 2001 September and 2004 June. We found only marginal hints of a limited number of dips in the light curve, previously reported to occur in this source, although the uncertainties due to the low counting statistics of the data are large. The Chandra and Swift spectra showed clearly spectral variability which resembles those observed in other ULXs. We can account for this spectral variability in terms o…
The outskirts of globular clusters (GCs) simultaneously retain crucial information about their formation mechanism and the properties of their host galaxy. Thanks to the advent of precision astrometry both their morphological and kinematic properties are now accessible. Here we present the first dynamical study of the outskirts of the retrograde GC NGC 3201 until twice its Jacobi radius (< 100 pc), using specifically-selected high-quality astrometric data from Gaia DR2. We report the discovery of a stellar overdensity along the South-East/North-West direction that we identify as tidal tails. T…
We present the stellar radial velocity analysis of the central 1x1' of the young massive Small Magellanic Cloud star cluster NGC 346. Using VLT/MUSE integral field spectroscopy in combination with Hubble Space Telescope photometry we extract 103 spectra of cluster member stars suited to measure accurate line-of-sight kinematics. The cluster member stars show two distinct velocity groups at v1 = -3.3 (+0.3/-0.2) km/s and v2 = 2.6 (+0.1/-0.1) km/s, relative to the systemic velocity of 165.5+/-0.2 km/s, and hint for a third group at v3 = 9.4 (+0.1/-0.1 km/s. We show that there is neither a correl…
If stars form in clusters but most stars belong to the field, understanding the details of the transition from the former to the latter is imperative to explain the observational properties of the field. Aging open clusters are one of the sources of field stars. The disruption rate of open clusters slows down with age but, as an object gets older, the distinction between the remaining cluster or open cluster remnant (OCR) and the surrounding field becomes less and less obvious. As a result, finding good OCR candidates or confirming the OCR nature of some of the best candidates still remains el…
NGC~6946, also known as the `Fireworks' galaxy, is an unusual galaxy that hosts a total of 225 supernova remnant (SNR) candidates, including 147 optically identified with high [SII]/Ha line ratios. In addition, this galaxy shows prominent HI holes, which were analyzed in previous studies. Indeed, the connection between SNRs and HI holes together with their physical implications in the surrounding gas is worth of attention. This paper explores the connection between the SNRs and the HI holes, including an analysis of their physical link to observational optical properties inside and around the …
We present detailed abundance measurements for 45 globular clusters (GCs) in galaxies in (and, in one case, beyond) the Local Group. The measurements are based on new high-resolution integrated-light spectra of GCs in NGC 185, NGC 205, M31, M33, and NGC 2403, combined with reanalysis of previous observations of GCs in the Fornax dSph, WLM, NGC 147, NGC 6822, and the Milky Way. The GCs cover the range -2.8 < [Fe/H] < -0.1 and we determined abundances for Fe, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Zr, Ba, and Eu. Corrections for non local thermodynamic equilibrium effects are included for N…
The internal dynamics of multiple stellar populations in Globular Clusters (GCs) provides unique constraints on the physical processes responsible for their formation. Specifically, the present-day kinematics of cluster stars, such as rotation and velocity-dispersion, could be related to the initial configuration of the system. In recent work, we provided the first study of the kinematics of different stellar populations in NGC$\,$0104 over a large field of view in the plane of the sky, exploiting Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) proper motions combined with multi-band ground-based photometry. In thi…
We study the star cluster population of NGC 2997, a giant spiral galaxy located at 9.5 Mpc and targeted by the Snapshot Hubble U-band Cluster Survey (SHUCS). Combining our U-band imaging from SHUCS with archival BVI imaging from HST, we select a high confidence sample of clusters in the circumnuclear ring and disk through a combination of automatic detection procedures and visual inspection. The cluster luminosity functions in all four filters can be approximated by power-laws with indices of $-1.7$ to $-2.3$. Some deviations from pure power-law shape are observed, hinting at the presence of a…
NGC1846 and NGC1783 are two massive star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud, hosting both an extended main sequence turn-off and a dual clump of red giants. They present similar masses but differ mainly in angular size. Starting from their high-quality ACS data in the F435W, F555W and F814W filters, and updated sets of stellar evolutionary tracks, we derive their star formation rates as a function of age, SFR(t), by means of the classical method of CMD reconstruction which is usually applied to nearby galaxies. The method confirms the extended periods of star formation derived from previou…
The color magnitude diagram (CMD) of NGC 1851 presents two subgiant branches (SGB), probably due the presence of two populations differing in total CNO content. We test the idea that a difference in total CNO may simulate an age difference when comparing the CMD of clusters to derive relative ages. We compare NGC 1851 with NGC 6121 (M4), a cluster of very similar [Fe/H]. We find that, with a suitable shift of the CMDs that brings the two red horizontal branches at the same magnitude level, the unevolved main sequence and red giant branch match, but the SGB of NGC 6121 and its red giant branch …
The primary goal of the Carnegie Chicago Hubble Program (CCHP) is to calibrate the zero-point of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) Hubble Diagram through the use of Population II standard candles. So far, the CCHP has measured direct distances to 11 SNe Ia, and here we increase that number to 15 with two new TRGB distances measured to NGC 5643 and NGC 1404, for a total of 20 SN Ia calibrators. We present resolved, point-source photometry from new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of these two galaxies in the F814W and F606W bandpasses. From each galaxy's stellar halo, we construct an F814W-band…
NGC 288 is a Galactic globular cluster having observed extra tidal structure, without confirmed tidal tails. $Gaia$ DR2 provides photometric and astrometric data for many of the stars in NGC 288 and its extra tidal structure. To compare with $Gaia$ data, we simulate an $N$-body model of a star cluster with the same orbit as NGC 288 in a Milky Way potential. The simulation shows that the cluster forms tidal tails that are compressed along the cluster's orbit when it is at apocentre and are expected to be a diffuse bipolar structure. In this letter, we present a comparison between the simulation…
We present the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distances to Type Ia supernova (SNe Ia) host galaxies NGC 4038/39 and NGC 5584. Based on the deep images constructed using archival Hubble Space Telescope data, we detect red giant branch stars in each galaxy. VI photometry of the resolved stars and corresponding I-band luminosity functions show the TRGB to be at I_{TRGB} = 27.67 \pm 0.05 for NGC 4038/39 and I_{TRGB} = 27.77 \pm 0.04 for NGC 5584. From these estimates, we determine the distance modulus to NGC 4038/39 to be (m-M)_0 = 31.67 \pm 0.05 (random) \pm 0.12 (systematic) (corresponding t…
The upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) has been used to image the head-tail radio galaxy NGC 4869 in the Coma cluster with an angular resolution of 6.26 arcsec at 250-500 MHz and 2.18 arcsec at the 1050-1450 MHz bands. The archival legacy GMRT data have also been used to image the source with angular resolutions from 4.9 to 21.8 arcsec at 610 MHz, 325 MHz, 240 MHz, and 150 MHz. We find that the ~200 kpc scale radio morphology consists of five distinct regions with the clear presence of a pinch at ~1.4 arcmin (= 38.8 kpc) and a ridge at ~3.4 arcmin (= 94.2 kpc) from the head. The s…
Previous studies have shown that the large, diffuse galaxies NGC1052-DF2 and NGC1052-DF4 both have populations of unusually luminous globular clusters as well as a very low dark matter content. Here we present newly-obtained deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) imaging of one of these galaxies, NGC1052-DF4. We use these data to measure the distance of the galaxy from the location of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). We find a rapid increase in the number of detected stars fainter than $m_{F814W} \sim 27.3$, which we identify as the onset of the red giant br…
The metal-rich and old bulge globular cluster (GC) NGC 6388 is one of the most massive Galactic GCs (M ~ 10^6 Msun). However, the spectroscopic properties of its multiple stellar populations rested only on 32 red giants (only seven of which observed with UVES, the remaining with GIRAFFE), given the difficulties in observing a rather distant cluster, heavily contaminated by bulge and disc field stars. We bypassed the problem using the largest telescope facility ever: the European Southern Observatory (ESO) archive. By selecting member stars identified by other programmes, we derive atmospheric …
We present the results of deep high resolution imaging performed with ACS/HRC@HST in the most active region of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4214. We resolved the stellar populations of five Young Massive Clusters and their surrounding galactic field. The star formation history of this region is characterized by two main bursts occurred within the last 500 Myr, with the oldest episode spread out across an area larger than that covered by the most recent one. The ages derived for the analysed clusters cover a wide range between 6.4<log(t/yr)<8.1 in agreement with those predicted by recent ana…
Jets (fast collimated outflows) are claimed to be the main shaping agent of the most asymmetric planetary nebula (PNe) as they impinge on the circumstellar material at late stages of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase. The first jet detected in a PN was that of NGC 2392, yet there is no available image because its low surface brightness contrast with the bright nebular emission. Here we take advantage from the tomographic capabilities of GTC MEGARA high-dispersion integral field spectroscopic observations of the jet in NGC 2392 to gain unprecedented details of its morphology and kinematic…
We present the result of a detailed analysis of HST UV and optical deep images of the massive and young (~1.5 Gyr) stellar cluster NGC 1783 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This system does not show evidences of multiple populations (MPs) along the red giant branch (RGB) stars. However, we find that the cluster main-sequence (MS) shows evidence of a significant broadening (50% larger than what is expected from photometric errors) along with hints of possible bimodality in the MP sensitive (F343N - F438W, F438W) color-magnitude-diagram (CMD). Such an effect is observed in all color combinations i…
We analyze the chemical composition of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 5315, through high-resolution (R = 40000) optical spectroscopy with UVES at the Very Large Telescope, and medium-resolution (R = 4800) near-infrared spectroscopy with FIRE at Magellan Baade Telescope, covering a wide spectral range from 0.31 to 2.50 micron. The main aim of this work is to investigate neutron (n)-capture element abundances to study the operation of the slow n-capture ("s-process") in the AGB progenitor of NGC 5315. We detect more than 700 emission lines, including ions of the n-capture elements Se, Kr, Xe, and…
We present new radial velocity measurements for 82 stars, members of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6388, obtained from ESO-VLT KMOS spectra acquired during the instrument Science Verification. The accuracy of the wavelength calibration is discussed and a number of tests of the KMOS response are presented. The cluster systemic velocity obtained (81.3 +/- 1.5 km/sec) is in very good agreement with previous determinations. While a hint of ordered rotation is found between 9'' and 20'' from the cluster centre, where the distribution of radial velocities is clearly bimodal, more data are needed…
NGC 796 is a massive young cluster located 59 kpc from us in the diffuse intergalactic medium of the 1/5-1/10 $Z_{\odot}$ Magellanic Bridge, allowing to probe variations in star formation and stellar evolution processes as a function of metallicity in a resolved fashion, providing a link between resolved studies of nearby solar-metallicity and unresolved distant metal-poor clusters located in high-redshift galaxies. In this paper, we present adaptive optics $gri$H$α$ imaging of NGC 796 (at 0.5", which is ~0.14 pc at the cluster distance) along with optical spectroscopy of two bright members to…
Globular clusters associated with the Galactic bulge are important tracers of stellar populations in the inner Galaxy. High resolution analysis of stars in these clusters allows us to characterize them in terms of kinematics, metallicity, and individual abundances, and to compare these fingerprints with those characterizing field populations. We present iron and element ratios for seven red giant stars in the globular cluster NGC~6723, based on high resolution spectroscopy. High resolution spectra ($R\sim48~000$) of seven K giants belonging to NGC 6723 were obtained with the FEROS spectrograph…
The Carnegie-Chicago Hubble Program (CCHP) is undertaking a re-calibration of the extragalactic distance scale, using Type Ia supernovae that are tied to Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) distances to local galaxies. We present here deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ACS/WFC imaging of the resolved stellar populations in the metal-poor halos of the SN Ia host galaxies NGC 4424, NGC 4526, and NGC 4536. These three Virgo constellation galaxies are prime targets for calibrating the extragalactic distance scale given their relative proximity in the local Universe and their low line-of-sight redden…
We perform a comprehensive study of the stellar populations in the young Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 1866, combining the analysis of its best-studied Cepheids with that of a very accurate colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) obtained from the most recent Hubble Space Telescope photometry. We use a Bayesian method based on new PARSEC stellar evolutionary tracks with overshooting and rotation to obtain ages and initial rotation velocities of five well-studied Cepheids of the cluster. We find that four of the five Cepheids belong to an initially slowly rotating young population (of $ 176 \pm 5$ …
We present final results of a program for the determination of the Hubble constant based on the calibration of the Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) using the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB). We report TRGB distances to three SN Ia host galaxies, NGC 3021, NGC 3370, and NGC 1309. We obtain F555W and F814W photometry of resolved stars from the archival Hubble Space Telescope data. Luminosity functions of red giant stars in the outer regions of these galaxies show the TRGB to be at I ~ QT = 28.2 ~ 28.5 mag. From these TRGB magnitudes and the revised TRGB calibration based on two distance anchors (N…
We present radial velocities and chemical abundances for red giant branch stars in the Galactic bulge globular clusters NGC 6342 and NGC 6366. The velocities and abundances are based on measurements of high resolution (R > 20,000) spectra obtained with the MMT-Hectochelle and WIYN-Hydra spectrographs. We find that NGC 6342 has a heliocentric radial velocity of +112.5 km/s (sigma = 8.6 km/s), NGC 6366 has a heliocentric radial velocity of -122.3 km/s (sigma = 1.5 km/s), and that both clusters have nearly identical metallicities ([Fe/H] ~ -0.55). NGC 6366 shows evidence of a moderately extended …
The LMC hosts a rich variety of star clusters seen in close projected proximity. Ages have been derived for few of them showing differences up to few million years, hinting at being binary star clusters. However, final confirmation needs to be done through spectroscopic analysis. Here we focus on the LMC cluster pair NGC2006-SL538 and aim to determine whether the star cluster pair is a bound entity (binary star cluster) or a chance alignment. Using the MIKE echelle spectrograph at LCO we have acquired integrated-light spectra for each cluster. We have measured radial velocities by two methods:…
The Carnegie-Chicago Hubble Program (CCHP) is re-calibrating the extragalactic SN Ia distance scale using exclusively Population II stars. This effort focuses on the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) method, whose systematics are entirely independent of the Population I Cepheid-based determinations that have long served as calibrators for the SN Ia distance scale. We present deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the low surface-density and low line-of-sight reddening halos of two galaxies, NGC 1448 and NGC 1316, each of which have been hosts to recent SN Ia events. Provisionally anchoring th…
We exploit multi-band Hubble Space Telescope photometry to investigate multiple populations (MPs) along the red horizontal branches (HBs) and red clumps of fourteen metal-rich Globular Clusters (GCs), including twelve Milky Way GCs and the Magellanic Cloud GCs NGC 1978 and NGC 416. Based on appropriate two-color diagrams we find that the fraction of 1G stars in Galactic GCs correlates with cluster mass, confirming previous results based on red-giant branch (RGB) stars. Magellanic-Cloud GCs show higher fractions of 1G stars than Galactic GCs with similar masses, thus suggesting that the environ…
A few star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds exhibit composite structures in the red-clump region of their colour-magnitude diagrams. The most striking case is NGC419 in the SMC, where the red clump is composed of a main blob as well as a distinct secondary feature. This structure is demonstrated to be real and corresponds to the simultaneous presence of stars which passed through electron degeneracy after central-hydrogen exhaustion and those that did not. This rare occurrence in a single cluster allows us to set stringent constraints on its age and on the efficiency of convective-core oversh…
