With the discovery of Dark Energy, $Λ_{DE}$, there is now a universal length scale, $\ell_{DE}=c/(Λ_{DE} G)^{1/2}$, associated with the universe that allows for an extension of the geodesic equations of motion. In this paper, we will study a specific class of such extensions, and show that contrary to expectations, they are not automatically ruled out by either theoretical considerations or experimental constraints. In particular, we show that while these extensions affect the motion of massive particles, the motion of massless particles are not changed; such phenomena as gravitational lensing remain unchanged. We also show that these extensions do not violate the equivalence principal, and that because $\ell_{DE}=14010^{800}_{820}$ Mpc, a specific choice of this extension can be made so that effects of this extension are not be measurable either from terrestrial experiments, or through observations of the motion of solar system bodies. A lower bound for the only parameter used in this extension is set.
Recently, an extension of the geodesic equations of motion using the Dark Energy length scale was proposed. Here, we apply this extension to the analyzing the motion of test particles at the galactic scale and longer. A cosmological check of the extension is made using the observed rotational velocity curves and core sizes of 1393 spiral galaxies. We derive the density profile of a model galaxy using this extension, and with it, we calculate $σ_8$ to be $0.73_{\pm 0.12}$; this is within experimental error of the WMAP value of $0.761_{-0.048}^{+0.049}$. We then calculate $R_{200}$ to be $206_{\…
In this work we have obtained a charged black hole solution in the presence of perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM) and discuss its energy conditions. The metric corresponding to the rotating avatar of this black hole solution is obtained by incorporating the Newman-Janis algorithm. We then compute two types of circular geodesics, namely, the null geodesics and time-like geodesics for this rotating spacetime geometry. For the case of time-like geodesics, we consider both neutral as well as charged massive particles. The effective potentials of the corresponding circular geodesics has also been stu…
We investigate the geodesics of a Schwarzschild spacetime embedded in an isotropic expanding cosmological background (McVittie metric). We focus on bound particle geodesics in a background including matter and phantom dark energy with constant dark energy equation of state parameter $w<-1$ involving a future Big Rip singularity at a time $t_{\ast}$. Such geodesics have been previously studied in the Newtonian approximation and found to lead to dissociation of bound systems at a time $t_{rip}<t_{\ast}$ which for fixed background $w$, depends on a single dimensionless parameter $\barω_0$ related…
For a particular type of {\bf k-}essence scalar field, the {\bf k-}essence emergent gravity metric is exactly mapped on to the Barriola-Vilenkin (BV) type metric for Schwarzschild background established by Gangopadhyay and Manna. Based on the S. Chandrasekhar, we report the exciting features of the time-like geodesic structure in the presence of dark energy in an emergent gravity scenario for this Barriola-Vilenkin type metric. We trace the different kinds of trajectories for time-like geodesic in the presence of dark energy for the {\bf k-}essence emergent Barriola-Vilenkin spacetime, which i…
A recently proposed extension of the geodesic equations of motion, where the worldline traced by a test particle now depends on the scalar curvature, is used to study the formation of galaxies and galactic rotation curves. This extension is applied to the motion of a fluid in a spherical geometry, resulting in a set of evolution equations for the fluid in the nonrelativistic and weak gravity limits. Focusing on the stationary solutions of these equations and choosing a specific class of angular momenta for the fluid in this limit, we show that dynamics under this extension can result in the fo…
In this work, we consider a rotating charged black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter. We consider the system to be immersed in non-magnetised, pressureless plasma. First, we evaluate the null geodesics in order to study the co-rotating and counter rotating photon orbits. Further, we analyse the null geodesics to calculate the celestial coordinates ($α, β$). The celestial coordinates are used to determine the black hole shadow radius ($R_s$). Thereafter, we observe and analyse the effects of black hole spacetime, perfect fluid dark matter and plasma parameters ($a$, $Q$, $χ$, $k$) on…
We present a model of the gravitational field based on two symmetric tensors. The equations of motion of test particles are derived: Massive particles do not follow a geodesic but massless particles trajectories are null geodesics of an effective metric. Outside matter, the predictions of the model coincide exactly with General Relativity, so all classical tests are satisfied. In Cosmology, we get accelerated expansion without a cosmological constant.
Equations of non-geodesic and non-geodesic deviations for different particles are obtained, using a specific type of classes of the Bazanski Lagrangian. Such type of paths has been found to describe the problem of variable mass in the presence of Riemannian geometry. This may give rise to detect the effect of dark matter which reveals the mystery of motion of celestial objects that are not responding neither to Newtonian nor Einsteinian gravity. An important link between non-geodesic equations and the dipolar particle or fluids has been introduced to apply the concept of geometization of physi…
Using the simple but robust model of a shell of dark matter (DM) around a Schwarzschild black hole (BH), represented by the mass ratio of the shell and BH $ΔM/M$, the shell extension $Δr_s$ and its inner radius $r_s$, we study the influence of DM on the spacetime structure and geodesic motion, and provide a classification of the BH+DM shell spacetimes according to the properties of the stable circular geodesics governing Keplerian disks. We focus our attention on the epicyclic motion around circular geodesics that can be related to observational phenomena in X-ray radiation from Keplerian accr…

We study null geodesic congruences (NGCs) in the presence of spacetime torsion, recovering and extending results in the literature. Only the highest spin irreducible component of torsion gives a proper acceleration with respect to metric NGCs, but at the same time obstructs abreastness of the geodesics. This means that it is necessary to follow the evolution of the drift term in the optical equations, and not just shear, twist and expansion. We show how the optical equations depend on the non-Riemannian components of the curvature, and how they reduce to the metric ones when the highest spin c…
Geodesics are used in a wide array of applications in cosmology and astrophysics. However, it is not a trivial task to efficiently calculate exact geodesic distances in an arbitrary spacetime. We show that in spatially flat (3+1)-dimensional Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetimes, it is possible to integrate the second-order geodesic differential equations, and derive a general method for finding both timelike and spacelike distances given initial-value or boundary-value constraints. In flat spacetimes with either dark energy or matter, whether dust, radiation, or a stiff fluid,…
We have studied the null geodesics of the Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by quintessence matter. Quintessence matter is a candidate for dark energy. Here, we have done a detailed analysis of the geodesics and exact solutions are presented in terms of Jacobi-elliptic integrals for all possible energy and angular momentum of the photons. The circular orbits of the photons are studied in detail. As an application of the null geodesics, the angle of deflection of the photons are computed.
Gravitational field equations in Randers-Finsler space of approximate Berwald type are investigated. A modified Friedmann model is proposed. It is showed that the accelerated expanding universe is guaranteed by a constrained Randers-Finsler structure without invoking dark energy. The geodesic in Randers-Finsler space is studied. The additional term in the geodesic equation acts as repulsive force against the gravity.

The gravitational growth index formalism provides a model independent way to look for deviations from general relativity by testing dark energy physics distinct from its effects on the cosmic expansion history. Here we extend the approach to incorporate an early time parameter g_star in addition to the growth index in describing the growth of large scale structure. We illustrate its utility for models with modified gravity at high redshift, early acceleration, or early dark energy. Future data will have the capability to constrain the dark energy equation of state, the growth index gamma, and …
We show that there are isometrically nonequivalent Robertson-Walker metrics which have the same set of geodesics. While one of these metrics satisfies the Einstein equations of pure dust without a cosmological constant, all the other describe pure dust with additional energy momentum tensor of cosmological constant type. Since each of these metrics have the same geodesics it is not clear how to distinguish experimentally between the Universes whose energy momentum tensor includes or not the cosmological constant type term.
Nurowski [arXiv:1003.1503] has recently suggested a link between the observation of Dark Energy in cosmology and the projective equivalence of certain Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metrics. Specifically, he points out that two FLRW metrics with the same unparameterized geodesics have their energy densities differing by a constant. From this he queries whether the existence of dark energy is meaningful. We point out that physical observables in cosmology are not projectively invariant and we relate the projective symmetry uncovered by Nurowski to some previous work on projective equ…
Astrophysical tests of the stability of fundamental couplings, such as the fine-structure constant $α$, are a powerful probe of new physics. Recently these measurements, combined with local atomic clock tests and Type Ia supernova and Hubble parameter data, were used to constrain the simplest class of dynamical dark energy models where the same degree of freedom is assumed to provide both the dark energy and (through a dimensionless coupling, $ζ$, to the electromagnetic sector) the $α$ variation. One caveat of these analyses was that it was based on fiducial models where the dark energy equati…
The aim of this paper is to provide the geometrical structure of a gravitational field that includes the addition of dark matter in the framework of a Riemannian and a Riemann--Sasaki spacetime. By means of the classical Riemannian geometric methods we arrive at modified geodesic equations, tidal forces, and Einstein and Raychaudhuri equations to account for extra dark gravity. We further examine an application of this approach in cosmology. Moreover, a possible extension of this model on the tangent bundle is studied in order to examine the behavior of dark matter in a unified geometric model…

The method of non-Riemannian (metric-independent) spacetime volume-forms (alternative generally-covariant integration measure densities) is applied to construct a modified model of gravity coupled to a single scalar field providing an explicit unification of dark energy (as a dynamically generated cosmological constant) and dust fluid dark matter flowing along geodesics as an exact sum of two separate terms in the scalar field energy-momentum tensor. The fundamental reason for the dark species unification is the presence of a non-Riemannian volume-form in the scalar field action which both tri…
Various observations from cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), type Ia supernova and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) are strongly suggestive of an accelerated expansion of the universe which can be explained by the presence of mysterious energy known as dark energy. The quintessential matter coupled with gravity minimally is considered one of the possible candidates to represents the presence of such dark energy in our universe. In view of this scenario, we study the geodesic of massless particles as well as massive particles around a (2+1) dimensional BTZ black hole (BH) spacetime…
We present a model of the gravitational field based on two symmetric tensors. Gravity is affected by the new field, but outside matter the predictions of the model coincide exactly with general relativity, so all classical tests are satisfied. We find that massive particles do not follow a geodesic while massless particles trajectories are null geodesics of an effective metric. We study the Cosmological case, where we get an accelerated expansion of the universe without dark energy. We also introduce the possibility to explain dark matter with $\tildeδ$ gravity.
We study the null geodesics extending from the near-horizon region out to the far region in the background of the Schwarzschild and the singly-spinning Myers-Perry black holes in the large dimension limit. We find that in this limit the radial integrals of these geodesics can be obtained by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. If the motion of the photon is confined to the equator plane, then all geodesic equations are solvable analytically. The study in this paper may provide a toy model to analyze the observables relevant to the electromagnetic phenomena occurring near the blac…

We consider alternative theories of gravity with a direct coupling between matter and the Ricci scalar We study the relation between these theories and ordinary scalar-tensor gravity, or scalar-tensor theories which include non-standard couplings between the scalar and matter. We then analyze the motion of matter in such theories, its implications for the Equivalence Principle, and the recent claim that they can alleviate the dark matter problem in galaxies.
Within the framework of Geodesic Brane Gravity, the deviation from General Relativity is parameterized by the conserved bulk energy. The corresponding geodesic evolution/nucleation of a de-Sitter brane is shown to be exclusively driven by a double-well Higgs potential, rather than by a plain cosmological constant. The (hairy) horizon serves then as the locus of unbroken $Z_{2}$ symmetry. The quartic structure of the scalar potential, singled out on finiteness grounds of the total (including the dark component) energy density, chooses the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal.
In this paper, we deal with the null geodesics extending from the near-horizon region out to a distant observatory in an extremal Kerr-Newman black hole background. In particular, using the matched asymptotic expansion method, we analytically solve the null geodesics near the superradiant bound in the form of algebraic equations. For the case that the photon trajectories are limited in the equatorial plane, the shifts in the azimuthal angle and time are obtained.
We discuss ghost free models of the recently suggested mimetic dark matter theory. This theory is shown to be a conformal extension of Einstein general relativity. Dark matter originates from gauging out its local Weyl invariance as an extra degree of freedom which describes a potential flow of the pressureless perfect fluid. For a positive energy density of this fluid the theory is free of ghost instabilities, which gives strong preference to stable configurations with a positive scalar curvature and trace of the matter stress tensor. Instabilities caused by caustics of the geodesic flow, inh…
In the frameworks of the effective field theory of metric supplemented by some distinct dynamical coordinates parametrized, in turn, by a scalar quartet -- the so-called quartet-metric gravity -- the extension of tensor gravity through a massive scalar graviton in addition to the massless tensor one is consistently exposed. The field equations for the two realizations of such an extension originating from the classically equivalent prototype theories - General Relativity (GR) and its Weyl transverse (WTDiff) alternative - are derived and argued to be, generally, non-equivalent, with the pure-g…
We review some recent trends in the inflationary model building, the supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking, the gravitino Dark Matter (DM) and the Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) production in supergravity. The Starobinsky inflation can be embedded into supergravity when the inflaton belongs to the massive vector multiplet associated with a (spontaneously broken) $U(1)$ gauge symmetry. The SUSY and R-symmetry can be also spontaneously broken after inflation by the (standard) Polonyi mechanism. Polonyi particles and gravitinos are super heavy and can be copiously produced during inflation via the Schwing…
By considering the back-reaction of the spacetime through the spherically symmetric quantum fluctuations of the background metric, Kazakov and Solodukhin removed the singularity of the Schwarzschild black hole. This regular Schwarzschild black hole has a spherical central region with a radius of the order of the Planck length. On the other hand, due to the positively accelerating expansion of the Universe, it seems that there exists a universal repulsive force known as dark energy. In the framework of quantum field theories, the quintessence field is a candidate model for investigating and mod…
We investigate dynamics of probe particles moving in the near-horizon limit of extremal Myers-Perry black holes in arbitrary dimensions. Employing ellipsoidal coordinates we show that this problem is integrable and separable, extending the results of the odd dimensional case discussed in arXiv:1703.00713. We find the general solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations for these systems and present explicit expressions for the Liouville integrals, discuss Killing tensors and the associated constants of motion. We analyze special cases of the background near-horizon geometry were the system posses…
We introduce a novel class of field theories where energy always flows along timelike geodesics, mimicking in that respect dust, yet which possess non-zero pressure. This theory comprises two scalar fields, one of which is a Lagrange multiplier enforcing a constraint between the other's field value and derivative. We show that this system possesses no wave-like modes but retains a single dynamical degree of freedom. Thus, the sound speed is always identically zero on all backgrounds. In particular, cosmological perturbations reproduce the standard behaviour for hydrodynamics with vanishing sou…
The BTZ black hole belongs to a family of locally three-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS$_3$) spacetimes labeled by their mass $M$ and angular momentum $J$. The case $M \ell \geq |J|$, where $\ell$ is the anti-de Sitter radius, provides the black hole. Extending the metric to other values of of $M$ and $J$ leads to geometries with the same asymptotic behavior and global symmetries, but containing a naked singularity at the origin. The case $M \ell \leq -|J|$ corresponds to spinning conical singularities that are reasonably well understood. Here we examine the remaining case, that is $-|J|<M\ell…
The evolution of a bound system in the expanding background has been investigated in this paper. The background is described by a FRW universe with the modified holographic dark energy model, whose equation of state parameter changes with time and can cross the phantom boundary. To study the evolution of the bound system, an interpolating metric is considered, and on this basis the geodesics of a test particle are given. The equation of motion and the effective potential are also derived from the geodesics. By studying the the effective potential and the evolution of the radius of a test parti…
In a recent paper (Phys. Dark Univ. {\bf 31}, 100744 (2021)) it has been obtained new static black hole solutions with primary hairs by the Gravitational Decoupling. In this work we either study the geodesic motion of massive and massless particles around those solutions and restrict the values of the primary hairs by observational data. In particular, we obtain the effective potential, the innermost stable circular orbits, the marginally bounded orbit, and the periastron advance for time--like geodesics. In order to restrict the values taken by the primary hairs we explore their relationship …
We explore the shifted $f(R) (\propto R^{1+δ})$ model with $δ$ as a distinguishing physical parameter for the study of constraints at local scales. The corresponding dynamics confronted with different geodesics (null and non-null) along with its conformal analogue is investigated. For null geodesics, we discuss the light deflection angle, whereas for non-null geodesics under the weak field limit, we investigate the perihelion advance of the Mercury orbit in $f(R)$ Schwarzschild background, respectively. The extent of an additional force, appearing for non-null geodesics, depends on $δ$. Such p…
Interacting dark energy-dark matter models have been widely analyzed in the literature in an attempt to find traces of new physics beyond the usual cosmological ($Λ$CDM) models. Such a coupling between both dark components is usually introduced in a phenomenological way through a flux in the continuity equation. However, models with a Lagrangian formulation are also possible. A class of the latter assumes a conformal/disformal coupling that leads to a fifth force on the dark matter component, which consequently does not follow the same geodesics as the other (baryonic, radiation, and dark ener…
We argue that dark energy with multiple fields is theoretically well-motivated and predicts distinct observational signatures, in particular when cosmic acceleration takes place along a trajectory that is highly non-geodesic in field space. Such models provide novel physics compared to $Λ$CDM and quintessence by allowing cosmic acceleration on steep potentials. From the theoretical point of view, these theories can easily satisfy the conjectured swampland constraints and may in certain cases be technically natural, potential problems which are endemic to standard single-field dark energy. Obse…
In this work we explore signatures of evolution for the dark energy density $X(z)=ρ_{de}(z)/ρ_{de}(0)$ using latest observations on SNIa and H(z). The models consist of parametrizations of the dark energy density and consequently a reconstruction for the EoS parameter w(z) as a function of redshift. Both parametrization methods using the SH0Es prior results in a small deviation from LCDM at 1$σ$ for $X(z)$. Extending the analysis up to 2$σ$, the evidence for evolution of $X(z)$ dilute in both cases. We have also studied an interacting dark model where this trend is also found.
