We derive the Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field equations for bosonic atoms in optical lattices with arbitrary lattice geometry. The equations are presented as a systematic expansion in 1/z, z being the number of lattice neighbors. Hence the theory is applicable in sufficiently high dimensional lattices. We apply the method to a two-component mixture, for which a rich phase diagram with spin-order is revealed.
We study the creation of a bosonic N00N state from the evolution of a Fock state in a double well. While noninteracting bosons disappear quickly in the Hilbert space, the evolution under the influence of a Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian is much more restricted. This restriction is caused by the fragmentation of the spectrum into a high-energy part with doubly degenerate levels and a nondegenerate low-energy part. This degeneracy suppresses transitions to states of the high-energy part of the spectrum. At a moderate interaction strength this effect supports strongly the dynamical formation of a N00N …
We derive an approximate analytical solution of the self-consistency equations of the bosonic dynamical mean-field theory (B-DMFT) in the strong-coupling limit. The approach is based on a linked-cluster expansion in the hybridization function of normal bosons around the atomic limit. The solution is used to compute the phase diagram of the bosonic Hubbard model for different lattices. We compare our results with numerical solutions of the B-DMFT equations and numerically exact methods, respectively. The very good agreement with those numerical results demonstrates that our approach captures th…
We present the effective action and self-consistency equations for the bosonic dynamical mean field (B-DMFT) approximation to the bosonic Hubbard model and show that it provides remarkably accurate phase diagrams and correlation functions. To solve the bosonic dynamical mean field equations we use a continuous-time Monte Carlo method for bosonic impurity models based on a diagrammatic expansion in the hybridization and condensate coupling. This method is readily generalized to bosonic mixtures, spinful bosons, and Bose-Fermi mixtures.
We develop the nonequilibrium extension of bosonic dynamical mean field theory (BDMFT) and a Nambu real-time strong-coupling perturbative impurity solver. In contrast to Gutzwiller mean-field theory and strong coupling perturbative approaches, nonequilibrium BDMFT captures not only dynamical transitions, but also damping and thermalization effects at finite temperature. We apply the formalism to quenches in the Bose-Hubbard model, starting both from the normal and Bose-condensed phases. Depending on the parameter regime, one observes qualitatively different dynamical properties, such as rapid …
We study quantum dynamics of a dark soliton in a one-dimensional Bose gas in an optical lattice within the truncated Wigner approximation. A previous work has revealed that in the absence of quantum fluctuations, dynamical stability of the dark soliton significantly depends on whether its phase kink is located at a lattice site or a link of two neighboring sites. It has also shown that the dark soliton is unstable in a regime of strong quantum fluctuations regardless of the phase-kink position. To bridge the gap between the classical and strongly quantum regimes, we investigate the dynamical s…
We analyze the dynamical and energetic instabilities of spin currents in a system of two-component bosons in an optical lattice, with a particular focus on the Neel state. We consider both the weakly interacting superfluid and the strongly interacting Mott insulating limits as well as the regime near the superfluid-insulator transition and establish the criteria for the onset of these instabilities. We use Bogoliubov theory to treat the weakly interacting superfluid regime. Near the Mott transition, we calculate the stability phase diagram within a variational Gutzwiller wavefunction approach.…
We present a detailed derivation of a multi-site mean-field theory (MSMFT) used to describe the Mott-insulator to superfluid transition of bosonic atoms in optical lattices. The approach is based on partitioning the lattice into small clusters which are decoupled by means of a mean field approximation. This approximation invokes local superfluid order parameters defined for each of the boundary sites of the cluster. The resulting MSMFT grand potential has a non-trivial topology as a function of the various order parameters. An understanding of this topology provides two different criteria for …
The energy spectrum of bosonic excitations from a condensate is given by the spectrum of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian constructed from a bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian in general even though the system is essentially Hermitian. In other words, two types of non-Hermiticity can coexist: one from the bosonic BdG nature and the other from the open quantum nature. In this paper, we propose boundary-dependent dynamical instability. We first define the bosonic dissipative BdG Hamiltonian in terms of Green's function in Nambu space and discuss the correct particle-hole symmetry of the c…
We calculate Shannon information entropy of trapped interacting bosons in both the position and momentum spaces, $S_r$ and $S_k$ respectively. The total entropy maintains the fuctional form $S=a + b \ln N$ for repulsive bosons. At the noninteracting limit the lower bound of entropic uncertainty relation is also satisfied whereas the diverging behavior of $S_r$ and $S_k$ at the critical point of collapse for attractive condensate accurately calculates the stability factor. Next we study the dynamics of Shannon information entropy with varying interparticle potential. We numerically solve the ti…
A resonantly driven bosonic Josephson junction supports stable collective excitations, or quasiparticles, which constitute analogs of the Trojan wave packets previously explored with Rydberg atoms in strong microwave fields. We predict a quantum beating effect between such symmetryrelated many-body Trojan states taking place on time scales which are long in comparison with the driving period. Within a mean-field approximation, this quantum beating can be regarded as a manifestation of dynamical tunneling. On the full N-particle level, the beating phenomenon leads to an experimentally feasible,…
We consider theoretically ultra-cold interacting bosonic atoms confined to a wire geometry and coupled to the field of an optical cavity. A spin-orbit coupling is induced via Raman transitions employing a cavity mode and a transverse running wave pump beam, the transition imprints a spatial dependent phase onto the atomic wavefunction. Adiabatic elimination of the cavity field leads to an effective Hamiltonian for the atomic degrees of freedom, with a self-consistency condition. We map the spin-orbit coupled bosonic wire to a bosonic ladder in a magnetic field, by discretizing the spatial dime…
Two generically different but universal dynamical quantum many-body behaviors are discovered by probing the stability of trapped fragmented bosonic systems with strong repulsive finite/long range inter-particle interactions. We use different time-dependent processes to destabilize the systems -- a sudden displacement of the trap is accompanied by a sudden quench of the strength of the inter-particle repulsion. A rather moderate non-violent evolution of the density in the first "topology-preserved" scenario is contrasted with a highly-non-equilibrium dynamics characterizing an explosive changes…
We formulate the Collective Quantum Field Theory for three-dimensional bosonic optical lattices and evaluate its consequences in a mean-field approximation to two collective fields, proposed by Fred Cooper et al. and in a lowest-order Variational Perturbation Theory (VPT). It is shown that present mean-field approximation predicts some essential features of the experimentally observed dependence of the critical temperature on the coupling strength and a second - order quantum phase transition. In contrast to a recent prediction for atomic gases by Fred Cooper et. al., we find no superfluid stat…
We introduce a new numerical method for the solution of self-consistent equations in the cluster mean-field theory. The method uses the density matrix renormalization group method to solve the associated cluster problem. We obtain an accurate critical value of the supersolid-superfluid transitions in the hard-core bosonic Hubbard model on a triangular lattice, which is comparable with the recent quantum Monte Carlo results. This algorithm is applicable to more general classes of models with a larger number of degrees of freedom.
We investigate the ground state properties and the nonequilibrium dynamics of a lattice trapped bosonic mixture consisting of an impurity species and a finite-sized medium. For the case of one as well as two impurities we observe that, depending on the lattice depth and the interspecies interaction strength, a transition from a strongly delocalized to a localized impurity distribution occurs. In the latter regime the two species phase separate, thereby forming a particle-hole pair. For two impurities we find that below a critical lattice depth they are delocalized among two neighboring outer l…
In this paper, we investigate the dynamical quantum phase transitions appearing in the Loschmidt echo and the time-dependent order parameter of a quantum system of harmonically coupled degenerate bosons as a function of the power-law decay $σ$ of long-range interactions. Following a sudden quench, the nonequilibrium dynamics of this system are governed by a set of nonlinear coupled Ermakov equations. To solve them, we develop an analytical approximation valid at late times. Based on this approximation, we show that the emergence of a dynamical quantum phase transition hinges on the generation …

We discuss the recently developed bosonic dynamical mean-field (B-DMFT) framework, which maps a bosonic lattice model onto the selfconsistent solution of a bosonic impurity model with coupling to a reservoir of normal and condensed bosons. The effective impurity action is derived in several ways: (i) as an approximation to the kinetic energy functional of the lattice problem, (ii) using a cavity approach, and (iii) by using an effective medium approach based on adding a one-loop correction to the selfconsistently defined condensate. To solve the impurity problem, we use a continuous-time Monte…
We investigate a binary mixture of bosonic atoms loaded into a state-dependent honeycomb lattice. For this system, the emergence of a so-called twisted-superfluid ground state was experimentally observed in [Soltan-Panahi et al., Nat. Phys. 8, 71 (2012)]. Theoretically, the origin of this effect is not understood. We perform numerical simulations of an extended Bose-Hubbard model adapted to the experimental parameters employing the Multi-Layer Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree method for Bosons. Our results confirm the overall applicability of mean-field theory within the relevant par…
We consider a weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate that rotates in either a harmonic, or a weakly-anharmonic trapping potential. Performing numerical calculations, we investigate the behaviour of the gas in these two cases as the angular momentum, or equivalently as the rotational frequency of the trap increases. While in the case of a purely-harmonic potential the gas makes a transition from the mean-field regime to the correlated, "Laughlin", regime, in the case of anharmonic confinement the mean-field approximation remains always valid. We compare our derived results in these two cas…
We theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate the use of motional sidebands in a trapped ensemble of $^{87}$Rb atoms to engineer tunable long-range XXZ spin models. We benchmark our simulator by probing a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic dynamical phase transition in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model, a collective XXZ model plus additional transverse and longitudinal fields, via Rabi spectroscopy. We experimentally reconstruct the boundary between the dynamical phases, which is in good agreement with mean-field theoretical predictions. Our work introduces new possibilities in quantum…
We observe dynamical fermionization, where the momentum distribution of a Tonks-Girardeau (T-G) gas of strongly interacting bosons in 1D evolves from bosonic to fermionic after its axial confinement is removed. The asymptotic momentum distribution after expansion in 1D is the distribution of rapidities, which are the conserved quantities associated with many-body integrable systems. Rapidities have not previously been measured in any interacting many-body quantum system. Our measurements agree well with T-G gas theory. We also study momentum evolution after the trap depth is suddenly changed t…
Time-periodic driving of a quantum system can enable new dynamical topological phases of matter that could not exist in thermal equilibrium. We investigate two related classes of dynamical topological phenomena in 2D systems: Floquet symmetry protected topological phases (FSPTs), and Floquet enriched topological orders (FETs). By constructing solvable lattice models for a complete set of 2D bosonic FSPT phases, we show that bosonic FSPTs can be understood as topological pumps which deposit loops of 1D SPT chains onto the boundary during each driving cycle, which protects a non-trivial edge sta…
We propose a scheme to dynamically create a supersolid state in an optical lattice, using an attractive mixture of mass-imbalanced bosons. Starting from a "molecular" quantum crystal, supersolidity is induced dynamically as an out-of-equilibrium state. When neighboring molecular wavefunctions overlap, both bosonic species simultaneously exhibit quasi-condensation and long-range solid order, which is stabilized by their mass imbalance. Supersolidity appears in a perfect one-dimensional crystal, without the requirement of doping. Our model can be realized in present experiments with bosonic mixt…
Entanglement entropy (EE), a fundamental conception in quantum information for characterizing entanglement, has been extensively employed to explore quantum phase transitions (QPTs). Although the conventional single-site mean-field (MF) approach successfully predicts the emergence of QPTs, it fails to include any entanglement. Here, for the first time, in the framework of a cluster MF treatment, we extract the signature of EE in the bosonic superfluid-insulator transitions. We consider a trimerized Kagome lattice of interacting bosons, in which each trimer is treated as a cluster, and implemen…
We use an exact quantum phase model to study the dynamical generation of particle-entanglement in a bosonic Josephson junction composed by two coupled and interacting Bose-Einstein condensates. Using analytical arguments, we show that linear coupling can accelerate the creation of entanglement with respect to the well known one-axis twisting model where coupling is absent. Furthermore, with a numerical analysis of optimal control schemes, we identify the optimal parameters for the fast generation of metrologically useful entanglement on short time scales: the optimal evolution is generated for…
We derive the self-energy functional theory for bosonic lattice systems with broken $U(1)$ symmetry by parametrizing the bosonic Baym-Kadanoff effective action in terms of one- and two-point self-energies. The formalism goes beyond other approximate methods such as the pseudoparticle variational cluster approximation, the cluster composite boson mapping, and the Bogoliubov+U theory. It simplifies to bosonic dynamical-mean field theory when constraining to local fields, whereas when neglecting kinetic contributions of non-condensed bosons it reduces to the static mean-field approximation. To be…
More than 30 years ago, Thouless introduced the concept of a topological charge pump that would enable the robust transport of charge through an adiabatic cyclic evolution of the underlying Hamiltonian. In contrast to classical transport, the transported charge was shown to be quantized and purely determined by the topology of the pump cycle, making it robust to perturbations. On a fundamental level, the quantized charge transport can be connected to a topological invariant, the Chern number, first introduced in the context of the integer quantum Hall effect. A Thouless quantum pump may theref…
In their preprint Anders et al. [arXiv:1004.0510] propose a crucial modification of the Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (B-DMFT) derived by us [Phys. Rev. B 77, 235106 (2008)]. Here we show that the modification consists of two steps which, in fact, cancel each other. Consequently their self-consistency equations are identical to ours.
The coupled equations which describe the temporal evolution of the Bose-Einstein condensed system are derived in the framework of nonequilibrium Thermo Field Dynamics. The key element is that they are not the naive assemblages of presumable equations, but are the self-consistent ones derived by appropriate renormalization conditions. While the order parameter is time-dependent, an explicit quasiparticle picture is constructed by a time-dependent expansion. Our formulation is valid even for the system with a unstable condensate, and describes the condensate decay caused by the Landau instabilit…
We consider a simple quantum model of atom-molecule conversion where bosonic atoms can combine into diatomic molecules and vice versa. The many-particle system can be expressed in terms of the generators a deformed $SU(2)$ algebra, and the mean-field dynamics takes place on a deformed version of the Bloch sphere, a teardrop shaped surface with a cusp singularity. We analyse the mean-field and many-particle correspondence, which shows typical features of quantum-classical correspondence. We demonstrate that semiclassical methods can be employed to recover full many-particle features from the me…
We establish a theoretical framework for exploring the quantum dynamics of finite ultracold bosonic ensembles based on the Born-Bogoliubov-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon (BBGKY) hierarchy of equations of motion for few-particle reduced density matrices (RDMs). The theory applies to zero as well as low temperatures and is formulated in a highly efficient way by utilizing dynamically optimized single-particle basis states and representing the RDMs in terms of permanents with respect to those. An energy, RDM compatibility and symmetry conserving closure approximation is developed on the basis of a recursive…
Exploring the impact of dimensionality on the quantum dynamics of interacting bosons in traps including particle correlations is an interesting but challenging task. Due to the different participating length scales the modelling of the short-range interactions in three dimensions plays a special role. We review different approaches for the latter and elaborate that for multi-configurational computational strategies finite range potentials are adequate resulting in the need of large grids to resolve the relevant length scales. This results in computational challenges which include also the expo…
Dynamical properties of two bosonic quantum walkers in a one-dimensional lattice are studied theoretically. Depending on the initial state, interactions, lattice tilting, and lattice disorder, whole plethora of different behaviors are observed. Particularly, it is shown that two bosons system manifests the many-body localization like behavior in the presence of a quenched disorder. The whole analysis is based on a specific decomposition of the temporal density profile into different contributions from singly and doubly occupied sites. In this way, the role of interactions is extracted. Since t…
The nonequilibrium ultracold bosonic quantum dynamics in finite optical lattices of unit filling following a linear interaction quench from a superfluid to a Mott insulator state and vice versa is investigated. The resulting dynamical response consists of various inter and intraband tunneling modes. We find that the competition between the quench rate and the interparticle repulsion leads to a resonant dynamical response, at moderate ramp times, being related to avoided crossings in the many-body eigenspectrum with varying interaction strength. Crossing the regime of weak to strong interaction…
We consider the many-body spectra of interacting bosonic quantum fields on a lattice in the semiclassical limit of large particle number $N$. We show that the many-body density of states can be expressed as a coherent sum over oscillating long-wavelength contributions given by periodic, non-perturbative solutions of the, typically non-linear, wave equation of the classical (mean-field) limit. To this end we construct the semiclassical approximation for both the smooth and oscillatory part of the many-body density of states in terms of a trace formula starting from the exact path integral form …
The correlated non-equilibrium quantum dynamics following a multiple interaction quench protocol for few-bosonic ensembles confined in finite optical lattices is investigated. The quenches give rise to an interwell tunneling and excite the cradle and a breathing mode. Several tunneling pathways open during the time interval of increased interactions, while only a few occur when the system is quenched back to its original interaction strength. The cradle mode, however, persists during and in between the quenches, while the breathing mode possesses dinstinct frequencies. The occupation of excite…
