(abridged) We report a study of the relation between dust and gas over a 100deg^2 area in the Taurus molecular cloud. We compare the H2 column density derived from dust extinction with the CO column density derived from the 12CO and 13CO J= 1-0 lines. We derive the visual extinction from reddening determined from 2MASS data. The comparison is done at an angular size of 200", corresponding to 0.14pc at a distance of 140pc. We find that the relation between visual extinction Av and N(CO) is linear between Av~3 and 10 mag in the region associated with the B213--L1495 filament. In other regions the linear relation is flattened for Av > 4 mag. We find that the presence of temperature gradients in the molecular gas affects the determination of N(CO) by ~30--70% with the largest difference occurring at large column densities. Adding a correction for this effect and accounting for the observed relation between the column density of CO and CO2 ices and Av, we find a linear relationship between the column of carbon monoxide and dust for observed visual extinctions up to the maximum value in our data 23mag. We have used these data to study a sample of dense cores in Taurus. Fitting an analytical column density profile to these cores we derive an average volume density of about 1.4e4 cm^-3 and a CO depletion age of about 4.2e5 years. We estimate the H2 mass of Taurus to be about 1.5e4 M_sun, independently derived from the Av and N(CO) maps. We derive a CO integrated intensity to H2 conversion factor of about 2.1e20 cm^-2 (K km/s)^-1, which applies even in the region where the [CO]/[H_2] ratio is reduced by up to two orders of magnitude. The distribution of column densities in our Taurus maps resembles a log--normal function but shows tails at large and low column densities.
We present an analysis of the diffuse ultraviolet (UV) emission near the Taurus Molecular Cloud based on observations made by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). We used a Monte Carlo dust scattering model to show that about half of the scattered flux originates in the molecular cloud with 25% arising in the foreground and 25% behind the cloud. The best-fit albedo of the dust grains is 0.3 but the geometry is such that we could not constrain the phase function asymmetry factor (g).
The Taurus-Auriga molecular complex (TMC) is the main laboratory for the study of low mass star formation. The density and properties of interstellar dust are expected to vary across the TMC. These variations trace important processes such as dust nucleation or the magnetic field coupling with the cloud. In this article, we show how the combination of near ultraviolet (NUV) and infrared (IR) photometry can be used to derive the strength of the 2175 Å bump and thus any enhancement in the abundance of small dust grains and PAHs in the dust grains size distribution. This technique is applied to t…
Trans-Alfvenic Motions in the Taurus Molecular Cloud
Interstellar dust affects astronomical observations through absorption and reddening, yet this extinction is also a powerful tool for studying interstellar matter in galaxies. 3D reconstructions of dust extinction and density in the Milky Way have suffered from artefacts such as the fingers-of-god effect and negative densities, and have been limited by large computational costs. Here we aim to overcome these issues with a novel algorithm that derives the 3D extinction density of dust in the Milky Way using a latent variable Gaussian Process and variational inference. Our model maintains non-ne…
Optical stellar polarimetry in the Perseus molecular cloud direction is known to show a fully mixed bi-modal distribution of position angles across the cloud (Goodman et al. 1990). We study the Gaia trigonometric distances to each of these stars and reveal that the two components in position angles trace two different dust clouds along the line of sight. One component, which shows a polarization angle of -37.6 deg +/- 35.2 deg and a higher polarization fraction of 2.0 +/- 1.7%, primarily traces the Perseus molecular cloud at a distance of 300 pc. The other component, which shows a polarization…
We present the results of mapping observations toward a nearby starless filamentary cloud, the Taurus Molecular Cloud 1 (TMC-1), in the CCS(JN=43-32, 45.379033 GHz) emission line, using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. The map shows that the TMC-1 filament has a diameter of ~0.1 pc and a length of ~0.5 pc at a distance of 140 pc. The position-velocity diagrams of CCS clearly indicate the existence of velocity-coherent substructures in the filament. We identify 21 substructures that are coherent in the position-position-velocity space by eye. Most of the substructures are elongated along the major …
Previous studies have analyzed the energy injection into the interstellar matter due to molecular bubbles. They found that the total kinetic energies of bubbles are comparable to, or even larger than, those of outflows but still less than the gravitational potential and turbulence energies of the hosting clouds. We examined the possibility that previous studies underestimated the energy injection due to being unable to detect dim or incomplete bubbles. We simulated typical molecular bubbles and inserted them into the $^{13}$CO Five College Radio Astronomical Observatory maps of the Taurus and …
The origin of striations aligned along the local magnetic field direction in the translucent envelope of the Taurus molecular cloud is examined with new observations of 12CO and 13CO J=2-1 emission obtained with the 10~m submillimeter telescope of the Arizona Radio Observatory. These data identify a periodic pattern of excess blue and redshifted emission that is responsible for the striations. For both 12CO and 13CO, spatial variations of the J=2-1 to J=1-0 line ratio are small and are not spatially correlated with the striation locations. A medium comprised of unresolved CO emitting substruct…
We have identified outflows and bubbles in the Taurus molecular cloud based on the $\sim 100$ deg$^2$ Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory $^{12}$CO(1-0) and $^{13}$CO(1-0) maps and the Spitzer young stellar object catalogs. In the main 44 deg$^2$ area of Taurus we found 55 outflows, of which 31 were previously unknown. We also found 37 bubbles in the entire 100 deg$^2$ area of Taurus, all of which had not been found before. The total kinetic energy of the identified outflows is estimated to be $\bf \sim 3.9 \times 10^{45}$ erg, which is \textbf{1\%} of the cloud turbulent energy. The tota…
We examine the role of the interstellar magnetic field to modulate the orientation of turbulent flows within the Taurus molecular cloud using spatial gradients of thin velocity slices of 12CO and 13CO antenna temperatures. Our analysis accounts for the random errors of the gradients that arise from the thermal noise of the spectra. The orientations of the vectors normal to the antenna temperature gradient vectors are compared to the magnetic field orientations that are calculated from Planck 353~GHz polarization data. These relative orientations are parameterized with the projected Rayleigh st…
The characterization of dust properties in the interstellar medium (ISM) is key for star formation. Mass estimates are crucial to determine gravitational collapse conditions for the birth of new stellar objects in molecular clouds. However, most of these estimates rely on dust models that need further observational constraints from clouds to prestellar and protostellar cores. We present results of a study of dust emissivity changes based on mm-continuum data obtained with the NIKA camera at the IRAM-30m telescope. Observing dust emission at 1.15 mm and 2 mm allows us to constrain the dust emis…
We study four lines of sight that probe the transition from diffuse molecular gas to molecular cloud material in Taurus. Measurements of atomic and molecular absorption are used to infer the distribution of species and the physical conditions toward stars behind the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC). New high-resolution spectra at visible and near infrared wavelengths of interstellar Ca II, Ca I, K I, CH, CH^+, C2, CN, and CO toward HD28975 and HD29647 are combined with data at visible wavelengths and published CO results from ultraviolet measurements for HD27778 and HD30122. Gas densities and temp…
Context. Taurus represents an ideal region to study the three-dimensional distribution of the young stellar population and relate it to the associated molecular cloud. Aims. The second Gaia data release (DR2) enables us to investigate the Taurus complex in three dimensions, starting from a previously defined robust membership. The molecular cloud structured in filaments can be traced in emission using the public far-infrared maps from Herschel. Methods. From a compiled catalog of spectroscopically confirmed members, we analyze the 283 sources with reliable parallax and proper motions in the Ga…
Recent observations indicate that organic molecules are prevalent towards starless and prestellar cores. Deuteration of these molecules has not been well-studied during the starless phase. Published observations of singly-deuterated methanol, CH$_2$DOH, have only been observed in a couple of well-studied, dense and evolved prestellar cores (e.g. L1544, L183). Since the formation of gas-phase methanol during this cold phase is believed to occur via desorption from the icy grain surfaces, observations of CH$_2$DOH may be useful as a probe of the deuterium fraction in the ice mantles of dust grai…
Turbulence dissipation is an important process affecting the energy balance in molecular clouds, the birth place of stars. Previously, the rate of turbulence dissipation is often estimated with semi-analytic formulae from simulation. Recently we developed a data analysis technique called core-velocity-dispersion (CVD), which, for the first time, provides direct measurements of the turbulence dissipation rate in Taurus, a star forming cloud. The thus measured dissipation rate of $(0.45\pm 0.05)\times 10^{33} {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$ is similar to those from dimensional analysis and also consistent wi…
Results. We illustrate our profile-fitting technique and present the K\,{\sc i} velocity structure of the dense ISM along the paths to all targets. As a validation test of the dust map, we show comparisons between distances to several reconstructed clouds with recent distance assignments based on different techniques. Target star extinctions estimated by integration in the 3D map are compared with their K\,{\sc i} 7699 A absorptions and the degree of correlation is found comparable to the one between the same K\,{\sc i} line and the total hydrogen column for stars distributed over the sky that…
We present new observations of all three ground-state transitions of the methylidyne (CH) radical and all four ground-state transitions of the hydroxyl (OH) radical toward a sharp boundary region of the Taurus molecular cloud. These data were analyzed in conjunction with existing CO and dust images. The derived CH abundance is consistent with previous observations of translucent clouds ($0.8\le A_{v} \le 2.1$ mag). The $X({\rm CH})$-factor is nearly a constant at $(1.0\pm0.06)\times 10^{22}$ $\rm {cm^{-2}~K^{-1}~km^{-1}~s}$ in this extinction range, with less dispersion than that of the more w…
A major question in the field of star formation is how molecular clouds form out of the diffuse Interstellar Medium (ISM). Recent advances in 3D dust mapping are revolutionizing our view of the structure of the ISM. Using the highest-resolution 3D dust map to date, we explore the structure of a nearby star-forming region, which includes the well-known Perseus and Taurus molecular clouds. We reveal an extended near-spherical shell, 156 pc in diameter, hereafter the "Per-Tau Shell", in which the Perseus and Taurus clouds are embedded. We also find a large ring structure at the location of Taurus…
We present the results of ALMA observations of dust continuum emission and molecular rotational lines toward a dense core, MC27 (aka L1521F), which is considered to be very close to the first core phase. We revealed the spatial/velocity structures of the core are very complex and and suggest that the initial condition of star formation is highly dynamical.
Measurement of chemical and kinematic structures in prestellar cores is essential for better understanding the star formation process. Here, we study the three prestellar cores (TMC-1C, L1544, and TMC-1) of the Taurus molecular cloud by means of the thioxoethenylidene (CCS) radical and ammonia (NH3) molecule observed with Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array telescope in D, C, and CNB configurations. Our main results are based on the CCS observation of the TMC-1C core, showing complex structures are present. Spatial offset relative to dust emission is observed in the CCS radical. Across a wide regi…
We present observations and analysis of the low-mass star-forming region, Taurus Molecular Cloud-1 (TMC-1). CS ($J$=2-1)/N$_2$H$^+$ ($J$=1-0) and C$^{17}$O ($J$=2-1)/C$^{18}$O ($J$=2-1) were observed with FCRAO (Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory) and SRAO (Seoul Radio Astronomy Observatory), respectively. In addition, Spitzer infrared data and 1.2 mm continuum data observed with MAMBO (Max-Planck Millimetre Bolometer) are used. We also perform chemical modeling to investigate the relative molecular distributions of the TMC-1 filament. Based on Spitzer observations, there is no young ste…
We present new intensity and polarization observations of the Taurus molecular cloud (TMC) region in the frequency range 10-20 GHz with the Multi-Frequency Instrument (MFI) mounted on the first telescope of the QUIJOTE experiment. From the combination of the QUIJOTE data with the WMAP 9-yr data release, the Planck second data release, the DIRBE maps and ancillary data, we detect an anomalous microwave emission (AME) component with flux density $S_{\rm AME, peak} = 43.0 \pm 7.9\,$Jy in the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC) and $S_{\rm AME, peak} = 10.7 \pm 2.7\,$Jy in the dark cloud nebula L1527, wh…
The core velocity dispersion (CVD) is a potentially useful tool for studying the turbulent velocity field of molecular clouds. CVD is based on centroid velocities of dense gas clumps, thus is less prone to density fluctuation and reflects more directly the cloud velocity field. Prior work demonstrated that the Taurus molecular cloud CVD resembles the well-known Larson's linewidth-size relation of molecular clouds. In this work, we studied the dependence of the CVD on the line-of-sight thickness of molecular clouds, a quantity which cannot be measured by direct means. We produced a simple stati…
We clarify the line-of-sight structure of the Taurus Molecular Cloud 1 (TMC-1) on the basis of the CCS($J_N=4_3-3_2$) and HC$_3$N($J=5-4$) spectral data observed at a very high velocity resolution and sensitivity of $ΔV \simeq 0.0004$ km s$^{-1}$ ($=61$ Hz) and $ΔT_{\rm mb} \simeq 40$ mK. The data were obtained toward the cyanopolyyne peak with $\sim$30 hours integration using the Z45 receiver and the PolariS spectrometer installed in the Nobeyama 45m telescope. Analyses of the optically thin $F=4-4$ and $5-5$ hyperfine lines of the HC$_3$N emission show that the spectra consist of four distin…
The optical and near-infrared (OIR) polarization of starlight is typically understood to arise from the dichroic extinction of that light by dust grains whose axes are aligned with respect to a local magnetic-field. The size distribution of the aligned-grain population can be constrained by measurements of the wavelength dependence of the polarization. The leading physical model for producing the alignment is radiative alignment-torques (RAT), which predicts that the most efficiently aligned grains are those with sizes larger than the wavelengths of light composing the local radiation field. T…
The emission line spectra of cyanoacetylene and methanol reveal chemical and physical heterogeneity on very small (< 0.1 pc) scales toward the peak in cyanopolyyne emission in the Taurus Molecular Cloud, TMC-1 (CP). We generate grids of homogeneous chemical models using a three-phase rate equation approach to obtain all time-dependent abundances spanning the physical conditions determined from molecular tracers of compact and extended regions of emission along this line of sight. Each time-dependent abundance is characterized by one of four features: a maximum/minimum, a monotonic increase/dec…
Methanol, one of the simplest complex organic molecules in the Interstellar Medium (ISM), has been shown to be present and extended in cold environments such as starless cores. We aim at studying methanol emission across several starless cores and investigate the physical conditions at which methanol starts to be efficiently formed, as well as how the physical structure of the cores and their surrounding environment affect its distribution. Methanol and C$^{18}$O emission lines at 3 mm have been observed with the IRAM 30m telescope within the large program "Gas phase Elemental abundances in Mo…
HCN, HNC, and their isotopologues are ubiquitous molecules that can serve as chemical thermometers and evolutionary tracers to characterize star-forming regions. Despite their importance in carrying information that is vital to studies of the chemistry and evolution of star-forming regions, the collision rates of some of these molecules have not been available for rigorous studies in the past. We perform an up-to-date gas and dust chemical characterization of two different star-forming regions, TMC 1-C and NGC 1333-C7, using new collisional rates of HCN, HNC, and their isotopologues. We invest…
Herschel observations have emphasized the role of molecular filaments in star formation. However, the origin and evolution of these filaments are not yet well understood, partly because of the lack of kinematic information. To examine whether the B211/B213 filament is accreting background gas due to its gravitational potential, we produced a toy accretion model and compared its predictions to the 12CO(1--0) and 13CO(1--0) velocity patterns. We also examined the spatial distributions of Halpha, 857 GHz continuum, and HI emission to search for evidence of large-scale external effects. We estimat…
We present a comparison of SCUBA-2 850-$μ$m and Herschel 70--500-$μ$m observations of the L1495 filament in the Taurus Molecular Cloud with the goal of characterising the SCUBA-2 Gould Belt Survey (GBS) data set. We identify and characterise starless cores in three data sets: SCUBA-2 850-$μ$m, Herschel 250-$μ$m, and Herschel 250-$μ$m spatially filtered to mimic the SCUBA-2 data. SCUBA-2 detects only the highest-surface-brightness sources, principally detecting protostellar sources and starless cores embedded in filaments, while Herschel is sensitive to most of the cloud structure, including ex…
We present deep NH$_3$ observations of the L1495-B218 filaments in the Taurus molecular cloud covering over a 3 degree angular range using the K-band focal plane array on the 100m Green Bank Telescope. The L1495-B218 filaments form an interconnected, nearby, large complex extending over 8 pc. We observed NH$_3$ (1,1) and (2,2) with a spectral resolution of 0.038 km/s and a spatial resolution of 31$"$. Most of the ammonia peaks coincide with intensity peaks in dust continuum maps at 350 $μ$m and 500 $μ$m. We deduced physical properties by fitting a model to the observed spectra. We find gas kin…
We report a first clear detection of the Zeeman splitting of a CCS emission line at 45 GHz toward a nearby prestellar dense filament, Taurus Molecular Cloud-1. We observed HC$_3$N non-Zeeman line simultaneously as the CCS line, and did not detect any significant splitting of HC$_3$N line. Thus, we conclude that our detection of the CCS Zeeman splitting is robust. The derived \textcolor{black}{line-of-sight} magnetic field strength is about 117 $\pm$ 21 $μ$G, which corresponds to the normalized mass-to-magnetic flux ratio of 2.2 if we adopt the inclination angle of 45$^\circ$. Thus, we conclude…
Far-infrared and (sub)millimeter fluxes can be used to study dust in protoplanetary disks, the building blocks of planets. Here, we combine observations from the Herschel Space Observatory with ancillary data of 284 protoplanetary disks in the Taurus, Chamaeleon I, and Ophiuchus star-forming regions, covering from the optical to mm/cm wavelengths. We analyze their spectral indices as a function of wavelength and determine their (sub)millimeter slopes when possible. Most disks display observational evidence of grain growth, in agreement with previous studies. No correlation is found between oth…
We present observations of 12CO J=1-0, 13CO J=1-0, HI, and all four ground-state transitions of the hydroxyl (OH) radical toward a sharp boundary region of the Taurus molecular cloud. Based on a PDR model that reproduces CO and [CI] emission from the same region, we modeled the three OH transitions, 1612, 1665, 1667 MHz successfully through escape probability non-LTE radiative transfer model calculations. We could not reproduce the 1720 MHz observations, due to un-modeled pumping mechanisms, of which the most likely candidate is a C-shock. The abundance of OH and CO-dark molecular gas (DMG) ar…
We investigate the spatial properties of sources from the GAIA catalogue previously identified as being members of the Taurus star forming region and which appear in the Spitzer catalogue. We study an area of sky of 10x15 deg, centred on Right Ascension (2000.0) = 68.5 deg and Declination (2000.0)= 27.0 deg, this being an area surrounding the Taurus molecular cloud. We use data obtained from the GAIA DR2 release. By using an inversion of GAIA parallax measurements to obtain distance values and by defining limits to the proper motions of the Taurus moving group, we are able to show that there a…
Class I protostars are thought to represent an early stage in the lifetime of protoplanetary disks, when they are still embedded in their natal envelope. Here we measure the disk masses of 10 Class I protostars in the Taurus Molecular Cloud to constrain the initial mass budget for forming planets in disks. We use radiative transfer modeling to produce synthetic protostar observations and fit the models to a multi-wavelength dataset using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo fitting procedure. We fit these models simultaneously to our new CARMA 1.3 mm observations that are sensitive to the wide range of …
Star formation can produce bubbles and outflows, as a result of stellar feedback. Outflows and bubbles inject momentum and energy into the surrounding interstellar medium, and so are related to the overall energy balance of the molecular cloud. Molecular bubbles can be resolved by higher-resolution radio telescopes to quantify the effect of star formation on molecular clouds. We report here the identification of a new molecular bubble with an outflow, and an Herbig Haro object, HH319, located at the bubble center. Multi-wavelength data have been utilized to study its spatial structure, energy …
We adopt the deep learning method CASI-3D (Convolutional Approach to Structure Identification-3D) to systemically identify protostellar outflows in 12CO and 13CO observations of the nearby molecular clouds, Ophiuchus, Taurus, Perseus and Orion. The total outflow masses are 267 Msun, 795 Msun, 1305 Msun and 6332 Msun for Ophiuchus, Taurus, Perseus and Orion, respectively. We show the outflow mass in each cloud is linearly proportional to the total number of young stellar objects. The estimated total 3D deprojected outflow energies are 9e45 ergs, 6e46 ergs, 1.2e47 ergs and 6e47 ergs for Ophiuchu…
We present deep CCS and HC$_7$N observations of the L1495-B218 filaments in the Taurus molecular cloud obtained using the K-band focal plane array on the 100m Green Bank Telescope. We observed the L1495-B218 filaments in CCS $J_N$ = 2$_1$$-$1$_0$ and HC$_7$N $J$ = 21$-$20 with a spectral resolution of 0.038 km s$^{-1}$ and an angular resolution of 31$''$. We observed strong CCS emission in both evolved and young regions and weak emission in two evolved regions. HC$_7$N emission is observed only in L1495A-N and L1521D. We find that CCS and HC$_7$N intensity peaks do not coincide with NH$_3$ or …
