We investigate a chiral d-density wave (CDDW) mean field model Hamiltonian in the momentum space suitable for the hole-doped cuprates, such as YBCO, in the pseudo-gap phase to obtain the Fermi surface(FS)topologies, including the anisotropy parameter(Épsilon) and the elastic scattering by disorder potential (|v0|). For Épsilon = 0, the chemical potential μ = - 0.27 eV for 10% doping level, and |v0| \geq |t| (where |t| = 0.25 eV is the first neighbor hopping), at zero/non-zero magnetic field (B), the FS on the first Brillouin zone are found to correspond to Fermi pockets around anti-nodal regions and barely visible patches around nodal regions. For Épsilon \neq 0, we find Pomeranchuk distortion of FS. We next relate our findings regarding FS to the magneto-quantum oscillations in the electronic specific heat. Since the nodal quasi-particle energy values for B = 0 are found to be greater than μ for |v0| \geq |t|, the origin of the oscillations for non-zero B corresponds to the Fermi pockets around anti-nodal regions. The oscillations are shown to take place for 17 T \leq B \leq 53 T and beyond in the weak disorder regime (|v0|=0.25eV) only.
We investigate a chiral d-density wave (CDDW) mean field Hamiltonian in momentum space, which also includes the in-plane hopping anisotropy parameter e, for the under-doped YBCO to explore the possibility of quantum oscillations (QO) in the specific heat in the presence of a changing magnetic field (B). The inclusion is motivated by the experimental signature of nematic order found in cuprates in neutron scattering experiments of Hinkov et al. (see Ref.[10]). We obtain the Fermi surface topologies, without and with magnetic field background, including the elastic scattering by impurities in th…
We investigate from first principles the proposed destruction of the controversial eg' pockets in the Fermi surface of NaxCoO2 due to Na disorder, by calculating its k-dependent configurational averaged spectral function <A(k,w)>. To this end, a Wannier function based method is developed that treats the effects of disorder beyond the mean field. Remarkable spectral broadenings of order ~eV are found for the oxygen orbitals, possibly explaining their absence in the experiments. Contrary to the current lore, however, the eg' pockets remain almost perfectly coherent. The developed method is expec…
Quantum oscillations have revealed the presence of a small pocket in the Fermi surface of the cuprate superconductor YBCO, whose nature and origin are the subject of much debate. Interpretations include electron and hole pockets; scenarios include Fermi-surface reconstruction by antiferromagnetism, d-density-wave order, and stripe order. Here we report quantum oscillations in the Seebeck and Nernst coefficients of YBCO and show, from the magnitude and sign of the Seebeck coefficient, that they come from an electron pocket. Using measurements of the Seebeck coefficient as a function of hole dop…
We investigate a chiral d-density wave (CDDW) mean field Hamiltonian in momentum space for the under-doped YBCO. We consider the commensurate density wave order which doubles the unit cell of the real space lattice and derive an expression for entropy in the CDDW state in the absence of magnetic field. We show that the transition to CDDW state gives rise to the occurrence of discontinuities in the entropy density difference between the CDDW state and the normal state at eight points(Hot spots) on the boundary of the reduced Brillouin zone. The chirality induced anomalous Nernst signal is shown…
Beta-NMR has been used to study vortex lattice disorder near the surface of the high-Tc superconductor YBCO. The magnetic field distribution from the vortex lattice was detected by implanting a low energy beam of highly polarized 8Li into a thin overlayer of silver on optimally doped, twinned and detwinned YBCO samples. The resonance in Ag broadens significantly below the transition temperature Tc as expected from the emerging field lines of the vortex lattice in YBCO. However, the lineshape is more symmetric and the dependence on the applied magnetic field is much weaker than expected from an…
N. Doiron-Leyraud et al. in [1] report on the experimental observation of small holes pockets in the energy spectrum of YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) coming below the transition into the charge ordered (CO) phase as a result of a Fermi surface (FS) reconstruction. We comment that their results seem to be more consistent with a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) vector direction of which alternates along the c-axis between neighboring CuO2 -planes.
The discovery of quantum oscillations in the normal-state electrical resistivity of YBa2Cu3O6.5 provides the first evidence for the existence of Fermi surface (FS) pockets in an underdoped cuprate. However, the pockets' electron vs. hole character, and the very interpretation in terms of closed FS contours, are the subject of considerable debate. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), with its ability to probe electronic dispersion as well as the FS, is ideally suited to address this issue. Unfortunately, the ARPES study of YBa2C3O7-d (YBCO) has been hampered by the technique's sur…
Flux line lattice in type II superconductors undergoes a transition into a "disordered" phase like vortex liquid or vortex glass, due to thermal fluctuations and random quenched disorder. We quantitatively describe the competition between the thermal fluctuations and the disorder using the Ginzburg -- Landau approach. The following T-H phase diagram of YBCO emerges. There are just two distinct thermodynamical phases, the homogeneous and the crystalline one, separated by a single first order transitions line. The line however makes a wiggle near the experimentally claimed critical point at 12T.…
The electrical resistivity rho_c of the underdoped cuprate superconductor YBCO was measured perpendicular to the CuO_2 planes on ultra-high quality single crystals in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity. The incoherent insulating-like behavior of rho_c at high temperature, characteristic of all underdoped cuprates, is found to cross over to a coherent regime of metallic behavior at low temperature. This crossover coincides with the emergence of the small electron pocket detected in the Fermi surface of YBCO via quantum oscillations, the Hall and Seebeck coefficients and …
Longitudinal and Hall voltages are measured in a clean twinned YBCO single crystal in the liquid and solid vortex phases. For magnetic fields tilted away from the c-axis more than about 2 deg, a scaling law |rho_xy|=A (rho_xx)^beta with beta approx.=1.4 is observed, which is unaffected by the vortex-lattice melting transition. The vortex-solid Hall conductivity is non-linear and diverges to negative values at low temperature. When the magnetic field is aligned to the c-axis, the twin-boundary correlated disorder modifies the scaling law, and beta approx.=2. The scaling law is unaffected by the…
Weak spontaneous magnetic fields are observed near the surface of YBCO films using Beta-detected Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Below Tc, the magnetic field distribution in a silver film evaporated onto the superconductor shows additional line broadening, indicating the appearance of small disordered magnetic fields. The line broadening increases linearly with a weak external magnetic field applied parallel to the surface, and is depth-independent up to 45 nm from the Ag/YBCO interface. The magnitude of the line broadening at 10 K extrapolated to zero applied field is less than 0.2 G, and is clos…
Measurements of Nernst effect, resistivity and Hall angle on epitaxial films of Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$(Pr-YBCO, 0$\leq x\leq$0.4) are reported over a broad range of temperature and magnetic field. While the Hall and resistivity data suggest a broad pseudogap regime in accordance with earlier results, these first measurements of the Nernst effect on Pr-YBCO show a large signal above the superconducting transition temperature(T$_c$). This effect is attributed to vortex-like excitations in the phase incoherent condensate existing above T$_c$. A correlation between disorder and the w…
A d-wave superconducting phase with coexisting intra-unit-cell orbital current order has the remarkable property that it supports finite size Fermi pockets of Bougoliubov quasiparticles. Experimentally detectable consequences of this include a residual $T$-linear term in the specific heat in the absence of disorder and residual features in the thermal and microwave conductivity in the low disorder limit.
Quantum oscillations and negative Hall and Seebeck coefficients at low temperature and high magnetic field have shown the Fermi surface of underdoped cuprates to contain a small closed electron pocket. It is thought to result from a reconstruction by charge order, but whether it is the order seen by NMR and ultrasound above a threshold field or the short-range modulations seen by X-ray diffraction in zero field is unclear. Here we use measurements of the thermal Hall conductivity in YBCO to show that Fermi-surface reconstruction occurs only above a sharply defined onset field, equal to the tra…
The competition between superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) order in underdoped cuprates has now been widely reported, but the role of disorder in this competition has yet to be fully resolved. A central question is whether disorder sets the length scale of the CDW order, for instance by pinning charge density fluctuations or disrupting an otherwise long range order. Using resonant soft x-ray scattering, we investigate the sensitivity of CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO) to varying levels of oxygen disorder. We find that quench cooling YBCO$_{6.67}$ (YBCO$_{6.75}$) crystal…
By means of the linear dynamic conductivity, inductively measured on epitaxial films between 30mHz and 30 MHz, the transition line $T_g (B)$ to generic superconductivity is studied in fields between B=0 and 19T. It follows closely the melting line $T_m (B)$ described recently in terms of a blowout of thermal vortex loops in clean materials. The critical exponents of the correlation length and time near $T_g (B)$, however, seem to be dominated by some intrinsic disorder. Columnar defects produced by heavy-ion irradiation up to field-equivalent-doses of $B_ϕ = 10T$ lead to a disappointing reduct…
We argue that the low- frequency quantum oscillations observed recently in the vortex state of underdoped ortho II-YBCO have the same origin as in other strongly correlated electronic systems. Superconductivity driven by strong interactions on several Fermi surfaces creates proximity gaps on the other. The gap transferred on a small-sized pocket from larger Fermi surfaces is small. In case of unconventional pairing symmetry the induced gap is proportional to ratio of the oscillations' frequencies for small and large Fermi surfaces. The gap is in inverse proportion to mass enhancement on the la…
Fascination with glassy states has persisted since Fisher introduced the vortex-glass as a new thermodynamic phase that is a true superconductor that lacks conventional long-range order. Though Fisher's original model considered point disorder, it was later predicted that columnar defects (CDs) could also induce glassiness -- specifically, a Bose-glass phase. In YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO), glassy states can cause distinct behavior in the temperature ($T$) dependent rate of thermally activated vortex motion ($S$). The vortex-glass state produces a plateau in $S(T)$ whereas a Bose-glass can t…
It is shown that, in the presence of a moderately strong C_4 symmetry breaking (which could be produced either by lattice orthorhombicity or the presence of an electron nematic phase), a weak, period 4, unidirectional charge density wave ("charge stripe") order can reconstruct the Fermi surface of a typical hole-doped cuprate to produce a small electron pocket. This form of charge density wave order is consistent with that adduced from recent high field NMR experiments in YBCO. The Fermi pocket has an area and effective mass which is a rough caricature of those seen in recent high field quantu…
Recent quantum oscillation experiments in underdoped high temperature superconductors seem to imply two paradoxes. The first paradox concerns the apparent non-existence of the signature of the electron pockets in angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The second paradox is a clear signature of a small electron pocket in quantum oscillation experiments, but no evidence as yet of the corresponding hole pockets of approximately double the frequency of the electron pocket. This hole pockets should be present if the Fermi surface reconstruction is due to a commensurate density wave, ass…
Charge-density-wave (CDW) correlations within the quintessential CuO$_2$ planes have been argued to either cause [1] or compete with [2] the superconductivity in the cuprates, and they might furthermore drive the Fermi-surface reconstruction in high magnetic fields implied by quantum oscillation (QO) experiments for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ (YBCO) [3] and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201) [4]. Consequently, the observation of bulk CDW order in YBCO was a significant development [5,6,7]. Hg1201 features particularly high structural symmetry and recently has been demonstrated to exhibit Fermi-liquid ch…
We report quantum oscillations in the underdoped high Tc YBCO over a wide range in magnetic field 28<B<85 T corresponding to ~12 oscillations, enabling the Fermi surface topology to be mapped to high resolution. As earlier reported by Sebastian et al., we find a Fermi surface comprising multiple pockets, as revealed by the additional distinct quantum oscillation frequencies and harmonics reported in this work. We find the originally reported broad low frequency Fourier peak at 535 T to be clearly resolved into three separate peaks at 460 T, 532 T and 602 T. Our increased resolution and angle-r…
For a doped antiferromagnet with short-range spin stripe correlations and long-range charge stripe order we find that the manifestation of charge order changes abruptly as a function of momentum along the Fermi surface. The disorder averaged local density of states is almost perfectly homogeneous when integrated only over states which contribute to the ``nodal'' spectral weight whereas it displays long range charge stripe order when integrated only over states which contribute to the ``antinodal'' spectral weight. An effectively two dimensional nodal liquid can thus coexist with static charge …
We consider a two-dimensional Fermi liquid coupled to low-energy commensurate spin fluctuations. At small coupling, the hole Fermi surface is large and centered around $Q =(π,π)$. We show that as the coupling increases, the shape of the quasiparticle Fermi surface and the spin-fermion vertex undergo a substantial evolution. At strong couplings, $g \gg ω_0$, where $ω_0$ is the upper cutoff in the spin susceptibility, the hole Fermi surface consists of small pockets centered at $(\pm π/2, \pm π/2)$. Simultaneously, the full spin-fermion vertex is much smaller than the bare one, and scales nearly…

Charge density-wave order has been observed in cuprate superconductors whose crystal structure breaks the square symmetry of the CuO2 planes, such as orthorhombic YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO), but not so far in cuprates that preserve that symmetry, such as tetragonal HgBa2CuO4+d (Hg1201). We have measured the Hall (R_H), Seebeck (S), and Nernst coefficients of underdoped Hg1201 in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity. The high-field R_H(T) and S(T) are found to drop with decreasing temperature and become negative, as also observed in YBCO at comparable doping. In YBCO, the negative R…
The Seebeck and Nernst coefficients $S$ and $ν$ of the cuprate superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO) were measured in a single crystal with doping $p = 0.12$ in magnetic fields up to H = 28 T. Down to T=9 K, $ν$ becomes independent of field by $H \simeq 30$ T, showing that superconducting fluctuations have become negligible. In this field-induced normal state, $S/T$ and $ν/T$ are both large and negative in the $T \to 0$ limit, with the magnitude and sign of $S/T$ consistent with the small electron-like Fermi surface pocket detected previously by quantum oscillations and the Hall effect. The…
The superconducting TMD 4Hb-TaS$_2$ consists of alternating layers of H and T structures, which in their bulk form are metallic and Mott-insulating, respectively. Recently, this compound has been proposed as a candidate chiral superconductor, due to an observed enhancement of the muon spin relaxation at $T_c$. 4Hb-TaS$_2$ also exhibits a puzzling $T$-linear specific heat at low temperatures, which is unlikely to be caused by disorder. Elucidating the origin of this behavior is an essential step in discerning the true nature of the superconducting ground state. Here, we propose a simple model t…
By paying special attention to the fact that the doped holes induce deformation of CuO6 octahedrons (or CuO5 pyramids) in cuprate superconductors, we develop a non-rigid band theory treating doping-induced alterations of energy-band structures in copper oxide superconductors. Thanks to this theory, we obtain a complete picture of the doping-induced alteration in the electronic structure of La2CuO4, from the spin-disordered insulating phase to the metallic phase. We conclude that the Fermi surface structure of this cuprate in the underdoped region consists of Fermi pockets in the antinodal regi…
It is found on the basis of the lowest Landau level approach for the Ginzburg-Landau model that, in bulk type II superconductors with strong line disorder directed {\it perpendicularly} to an applied field, the continuous vortex-glass transition is depressed to the low $T$ limit in the limit of weak {\it point} disorder. An anomalous resistive broadening in twin-free YBCO with columnar defects in a field parallel to the layers is discussed based on this theoretical finding. Other phenomena which, we argue, arise indirectly from this mechanism in type II superconductors including correlated def…
We report high-field magnetotransport measurements on β''-(BEDT-TTF)_4[(H_3O)M(C_2O_4)_3]Y, where M=Ga, Cr and Fe and Y=C_5H_5N. We observe similar Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in all compounds, attributable to four quasi-two-dimensional Fermi-surface pockets, the largest of which corresponds to a cross-sectional area ~8.5\% of the Brillouin zone. The cross-sectional areas of the pockets are in agreement with the expectations for a compensated semimetal, and the corresponding effective masses are ~m_e, rather small compared to those of other BEDT-TTF salts. Apart from the case of the smalles…
We investigate the effect of disordered vacancies on the normal-state electronic structure of the newly discovered alkali-intercalated iron selenide superconductors. To this end we use a recently developed Wannier function based method to calculate from first principles the configuration-averaged spectral function <A(k,w)> of K0.8Fe1.6Se2 with disordered Fe and K vacancies. We find that the disorder can suppress the expected Fermi surface reconstruction without completely destroying the Fermi surface. More interestingly, the disorder effect raises the chemical potential significantly, giving e…
I review theoretical ideas and implications of experiments for the gap structure and symmetry of the Fe-based superconductors. Unlike any other class of unconventional superconductors, one has in these systems the possibility to tune the interactions by small changes in pressure, doping or disorder. Thus, measurements of order parameter evolution with these parameters should enable a deeper understanding of the underlying interactions. I briefly review the "standard paradigm" for $s$-wave pairing in these systems, and then focus on developments in the past several years which have challenged t…
We investigate the influence of general forms of disorder on the robustness of superconductivity in multiband materials. Specifically, we consider a general two-band system where the bands arise from an orbital degree of freedom of the electrons. Within the Born approximation, we show that the interplay of the spin-orbital structure of the normal-state Hamiltonian, disorder scattering, and superconducting pairing potentials can lead to significant deviations from the expected robustness of the superconductivity. This can be conveniently formulated in terms of the so-called "superconducting fit…

A pair-density wave state has been suggested to exist in underdoped cuprate superconductors, with some supporting experimental evidence emerging over the past few years from scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Several studies have also linked the observed quantum oscillations in these systems to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface by a pair-density wave. Here, we show, using semiclassical analysis and numerical calculations, that a Fermi pocket created by first-order scattering from a pair-density wave cannot induce such oscillations. In contrast, pockets resulting from second-order scattering …
The magnetic oscillations in YBCO high-temperature superconductors have been widely studied over the last decade and consist of three equidistant low frequencies with a central frequency several times more intense than its two shoulders. This remains a puzzle in spite of numerous attempts to explain the corresponding small Fermi-surface pockets. Furthermore the ARPES data indicate only four Fermi-arcs with bilayer splitting, and show no sign of such small areas in the Fermi surface. Here we argue that the magnetic oscillations measured in under-doped bilayer high temperature superconductors, i…
The competition between intrinsic disorder in superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) thin films and an ultradense triangular lattice of cylindrical pinning centers spaced at 30 nm intervals results in an ordered Bose glass phase of vortices. The samples were created by scanning the focused beam of a helium-ion microscope over the surface of the YBCO thin film to form columns of point defects where superconductivity was locally suppressed. The voltage-current isotherms reveal critical behavior and scale in the vicinity of the second-order glass transition. The latter exhibits a disti…
The complexity of competing orders in cuprates has recently been multiplied by a number of bulk evidences of charge ordering with wavevector that connects the antinodal region of the Fermi surface. This results contradicts many spectroscopic results of the nodal nesting. To resolve this issue, we carry out a unified study of the resulting electronic fingerprints of both nodal and antinodal nestings (NNs/ANs), and compare with angle-resolved photoemission, scanning tunneling spectroscopic data, as well as bulk sensitive Hall effect measurements. Our result makes several definitive distinctions …
