The conformal invariance of the low energy limit theory governing the electronic properties of graphene is explored. In particular, it is noted that the massless Dirac theory in point enjoys local Weyl symmetry, a very large symmetry. Exploiting this symmetry in the two spatial dimensions and in the associated three dimensional spacetime, we find the geometric constraints that correspond to specific shapes of the graphene sheet for which the electronic density of states is the same as that for planar graphene, provided the measurements are made in accordance to the inner reference frame of the electronic system. These results rely on the (surprising) general relativistic-like behavior of the graphene system arising from the combination of its well known special relativistic-like behavior with the less explored Weyl symmetry. Mathematical structures, such as the Virasoro algebra and the Liouville equation, naturally arise in this three-dimensional context and can be related to specific profiles of the graphene sheet. Speculations on possible applications of three-dimensional gravity are also proposed.
This is a status report about the ongoing work on the realization of quantum field theory on curved graphene spacetimes that uses Weyl symmetry. The programme is actively pursued from many different perspectives. Here we point to what has been done, and to what needs to be done.
In the first attempt to introduce gauge theories in physics, Hermann Weyl, around the 1920s, proposed certain scale transformations to be a fundamental symmetry of nature. Despite the intense use of Weyl symmetry that has been made over the decades, in various theoretical settings, this idea never found its way to the laboratory. Recently, building-up from work by Lochlainn O'Raifeartaigh and collaborators on the Weyl-gauge symmetry, applications of Weyl-symmetry to the electronic properties of graphene have been put forward, first, in a theoretical setting, and later, in an experimental propo…
Starting from Maxwell-Weyl algebra we found the transformation rules for generalized space-time coordinates and the differential realization of corresponding generators. By treating local gauge invariance of Maxwell-Weyl group, we presented the Einstein-Cartan-Weyl gravity with the additional terms containing the gauge fields associated with the antisymmetric generators.
On the basis of the Weyl equations of congruent transference, we consider a possible influence of the Weyl non-Abelian gauge field defining the transference on the precession of a gyroscope. Plane-wave solutions to the equations of the non-Abelian gauge field are derived.
We study the single-particle spectrum of three-dimensional Weyl semimetals taking into account electron-phonon interactions that are the result of straining the material. We find that a well-defined fermionic excitation appears in addition to the standard peak corresponding to quasiparticle states as suggested by Landau-Fermi liquid theory. Contrary to the case of Dirac systems interacting via the Coulomb interaction, these satellite peaks appear even at lowest order in perturbation theory. The new excitations are anisotropic, as opposed to the single-particle spectrum, and their behavior is d…
We compute the linearized Weyl-Weyl correlator using a new solution for the graviton propagator on de Sitter background in de Donder gauge. The result agrees exactly with a previous computation in a noncovariant gauge. We also use dimensional regularization to compute the one loop expectation value of the square of the Weyl tensor.
We construct all possible Weyl invariant actions in $d=4$ for linearized spin three field in a general gravitational background. The first action is obtained as the square of the generalized Weyl tensor for a spin three gauge field in nonlinear gravitational background. It is, however, not invariant under spin three gauge transformations. We then construct two other nontrivial Weyl but not gauge invariant actions which are linear in the Weyl tensor of the background geometry. We then discuss existence and uniqueness of a possible linear combination of these three actions which is gauge invaria…
Electrons in low-temperature solids are governed by the non-relativistic Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation, since the electron velocities are much slower than the speed of light. Remarkably, the low-energy quasi-particles given by electrons in various materials can behave as relativistic Dirac/Weyl fermions that obey the relativistic Dirac/Weyl equation. These materials are called "Dirac/Weyl materials", which provide a tunable platform to test relativistic quantum phenomena in table-top experiments. More interestingly, different types of physical fields in these Weyl/Dirac materials, such as magn…
On the basis of the general principles of a gauge field theory the gauge theory for the Poincaré-Weyl group is constructed. It is shown that tetrads are not true gauge fields, but represent functions from true gauge fields: Lorentzian, translational and dilatational ones. The equations of gauge fields which sources are an energy-momentum tensor, orbital and spin momemta, and also a dilatational current of an external field are obtained. A new direct interaction of the Lorentzian gauge field with the orbital momentum of an external field appears, which describes some new effects. Geometrical in…
It is argued that in Weyl electrovacuum solutions the linear term in the metric cannot be eliminated just on grounds of gauge invariance. Its importance is stressed.
Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formalism is used to describe the large-$N$ limit of reduced SU$(N)$ quenching gauge theory. Moyal deformation of Schild-Eguchi action is obtained.
In line with a previous paper, a gauge-invariant regularization is developed for the Weyl determinant of a Euclidean gauged chiral fermion. We restrict ourselves to gauge configurations with the $A$ field going to zero at infinity in Euclidean space; and thus restrict gauge transformations to those with $U$ the identity at infinity. For each finite cutoff one gets a strictly gauge-invariant expression for the Weyl determinant. Full Euclidean invariance is only to be sought in the limit of removing the cutoff. We expect the limit to be Euclidean invariant, but this has not yet been proved. One …
We consider two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to matter in the temporal gauge, using the Polyakov path integral. We show that the integration over the metric can be explicitly performed under some plausible assumptions. We also discuss that the critical dimensions in string theory may not be determined in the temporal gauge.
The canonical quantization is performed at a light-front surface for the SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. The Weyl gauge is imposed as a gauge condition. The suitable parameterization is chosen for the transverse gauge field components in order to have Dirac brackets independent of interactions. The generating functional is defined for the perturbation theory and it is shown to coincide with its equal-time counterpart.
The canonical quantization on a single light front is performed for the Abelian gauge fields with the Weyl gauge coupled with fermion field currents. The analysis is carried separately for 1+1 dimensions and for higher dimensions. The Gauss law, implemented weakly as the condition on states, selects physical subspace with the Poincare covariance recovered. The perturbative gauge field propagators are found with the ML prescription for their spurious poles. The LF Feynman rules are found and their equivalence with the usual equal-time perturbation for the S-matrix elements is studied for all or…
We study the trace and chiral anomalies of Weyl fermions in a non-abelian gauge background in four dimensions. Using a Pauli-Villars regularization we identify the trace anomaly, proving that it can be cast in a gauge invariant form, even in the presence of the non-abelian chiral anomaly, that we rederive to check the consistency of our methods. In particular, we find that the trace anomaly does not contain any parity-odd topological contribution, whose presence has been debated in the recent literature.
We study the trace anomaly of a Weyl fermion in an abelian gauge background. Although the presence of the chiral anomaly implies a breakdown of gauge invariance, we find that the trace anomaly can be cast in a gauge invariant form. In particular, we find that it does not contain any odd-parity contribution proportional to the Chern-Pontryagin density. The latter would be allowed by the consistency conditions. We perform our calculations using Pauli-Villars regularization and heat kernel methods. The issue is analogous to the one recently discussed in the literature about a conjectured contribu…
Two different gauge potential methods are engaged to calculate explicitly the spin Hall conductivity in graphene. The graphene Hamiltonian with spin-orbit interaction is expressed in terms of kinematic momenta by introducing a gauge potential. A formulation of the spin Hall conductivity is established by requiring that the time evolution of this kinematic momentum vector vanishes. We then calculated the conductivity employing the Berry gauge fields. We show that both of the gauge fields can be deduced from the pure gauge field arising from the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations.
The higher spin interaction currents for the conformally coupled scalar in $AdS_{4}$ space for both regular and irregular boundary condition corresponding to the free and interacting critical point of the boundary O(N) sigma model are constructed. The explicit form of the linearized interaction of the scalar and spin two and four gauge fields in the $AdS_{D}$ space using Noether's procedure for the corresponding spin two and four linearized gauge and generalized Weyl transformations are obtained.
We investigate the low energy continuum limit theory for electrons in a graphene sheet under strain. We use the quantum field theory in curved spaces to analyze the effect of the system deformations into an effective gauge field. We study both in-plane and out-of-plane deformations and obtain a closed expression for the effective gauge field due to arbitrary nonuniform sheet deformations. The obtained results reveal a remarkable relation between the local-pseudo magnetic field and the Riemann curvature, so far overlooked.
In a new Weyl 2-spinor approach to Non abelian Gauge Theories, starting with the local U(1) Gauge group of a previous work, we study now the SU(3) case corresponding to quarks (antiquarks) interacting with color fields. The principal difference with the conventional approach is that particle-field interactions are not described by means of potentials but by the field strength magnitudes. Some analytical expressions showing similarities with electrodynamics are obtained. Classical equations that describe the behavior of quarks under gluon fields might be in principle applied to the quark-gluon …
A gauged Dirac-Weyl equation in (2+1)-dimension is considered. This equation has the particularity to describe the states of a graphene Dirac matter. In particular we are interested in matter interacting with a Chern-Simons gauge fields. We show that exact self-dual solutions are admitted. These solutions are the same as those supported by nonrelativistic matter interacting with a Chern-Simons gauge field.
It is shown that in a quadratic gravity based on Weyl's conformal geometry, not only the Einstein-Hilbert action emerges but also a Weyl gauge field becomes massive in the Weyl gauge condition, $\tilde R = k$, for a Weyl gauge symmetry within the framework of the BRST formalism. We also consider a more general gravitational theory with a scalar field in the Weyl geometry and see that the Einstein-Hilbert action can be induced from spontaneous symmetry breakdown of the Weyl gauge symmetry. Thus, it turns out that Weyl's conformal gravity is quantum mechanically equivalent to Einstein's general …
Semiclassical instanton solutions in the 3D SU(2) Georgi-Glashow model are transformed into the Weyl gauge. This illustrates the tunneling interpretation of these instantons and provides a smooth regularization of the singular unitary gauge. The 3D Georgi-Glashow model has both instanton and sphaleron solutions, in contrast to 3D Yang-Mills theory which has neither, and 4D Yang-Mills theory which has instantons but no sphaleron, and 4D electroweak theory which has a sphaleron but no instantons. We also discuss the spectral flow picture of fundamental fermions in a Georgi-Glashow instanton back…
We examine QED(3+1) quantised in the `front form' with finite `volume' regularisation, namely in Discretised Light-Cone Quantisation. Instead of the light-cone or Coulomb gauges, we impose the light-front Weyl gauge $A^-=0$. The Dirac method is used to arrive at the quantum commutation relations for the independent variables. We apply `quantum mechanical gauge fixing' to implement Gauß' law, and derive the physical Hamiltonian in terms of unconstrained variables. As in the instant form, this Hamiltonian is invariant under global residual gauge transformations, namely displacements. On the ligh…
The Weyl-gauge ($A_0^a=0)$ QCD Hamiltonian is unitarily transformed to a representation in which it is expressed entirely in terms of gauge-invariant quark and gluon fields. In a subspace of gauge-invariant states we have constructed that implement the non-Abelian Gauss's law, this unitarily transformed Weyl-gauge Hamiltonian can be further transformed and, under appropriate circumstances, can be identified with the QCD Hamiltonian in the Coulomb gauge. We demonstrate an isomorphism that materially facilitates the application of this Hamiltonian to a variety of physical processes, including th…
We show that fermion charge fractionalization can take place in a recently proposed chiral gauge model for graphene even in the absence of Kekulé distortion of the graphene honeycomb lattice. We extend the model by adding the coupling of fermions to an external magnetic field and show that the fermion charge can be fractionalized by means of only gauge potentials. It is shown that the chiral fermion charge can also have fractional value. We also relate the fractionalization of the fermion charge to the parity anomaly in an extended Quantum Electrodynamics which involves vector and vector-axial…

We show how Weyl degrees of freedom, can be introduced in the Nambu-Goto string in the path integral formulation using reparametrization invariant measure. We first identify Weyl degrees in conformal gauge using BFV formulation. Further we change Nambu-Goto string action to Polyakov action. The generating functional in light-cone gauge is then obtained from the generating func- tional corresponding to Polyakov action in conformal gauge by using suitably constructed finite field dependent BRST transformation.
We consider a simple but generic model of gravity where Weyl--invariance is realized thanks to the presence of a gauge field for dilatations. We quantize the theory by suitably defining renormalization group flows that describe the integration of successive momentum shells, in such a way that Weyl--invariance is maintained in the flow. When the gauge fields are massless the theory has, in addition to Weyl invariance, an abelian gauge symmetry. According to the definition of the cutoff, the flow can break or preserve this extended symmetry. We discuss the fixed points of these flows.
The properties of Dirac gamma matrices in a four-dimensional space-time with the $(2,2)$ signature are studied. The basic spinors are classified, and the existence of Majorana-Weyl spinors is noted. Supersymmetry in $2 + 2$ dimensions is discussed, and the existence of the {\it real chiral} scalar supermultiplet is discovered. Supersymmetric {\it self-dual} Yang-Mills theories and {\it self-dual} supergravity model in $2 + 2$ dimensions, that are apparently relevant to integrable systems, are formulated for the first time.
The background field method is used to linearize the Weyl invariant scalar-tensor gravity, coupled with a Stueckelberg field. For a generic background metric, this action is found to be not invariant, under both diffeomorphism and generalized Weyl symmetry, the latter being a combination of gauge and Weyl transformations. Interestingly, the quadratic Lagrangian, emerging from a background of Minkowski metric, respects both the transformations, independently. Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry of scalar-tensor gravity coupled with a Stueckelberg-like massive gauge particle, possessing di…
Using a cohomological characterization of the consistent and the covariant Lorentz and gauge anomalies, derived from the complexification of the relevant algebras, we study in $d=2$ the definition of the Weyl determinant for a non-abelian theory with Riemannian background. We obtain two second order operators that produce, by means of $ζ$-function regularization, respectively the consistent and the covariant Lorentz and gauge anomalies, preserving diffeomorphism invariance. We compute exactly their functional determinants and the W-Z-W terms: the ``consistent'' determinant agrees with the non-…
The winding numbers for the even d+1 spacetime dimensional Weyl Hamiltonians are calculated in terms of the related Green's functions. It is shown that these winding numbers result in the divergence of the Dirac monopole fields, hence they are equal to the unit topological charge. It is demonstrated that the winding numbers are also equal to the Chern numbers which are expressed as the integral of the Berry field strength. Explicit calculations are presented for the 3+1 and 5+1 dimensional cases. Relevance of these topological invariants for the physical systems like the semiclassical chiral k…
We demonstrate by explicit construction that while the untwisted Harrington-Shepard caloron $A_μ$ is manifestly periodic in Euclidean time, with period $β=\frac{1}{T}$, when transformed to the Weyl ($A_0=0$) gauge, the caloron gauge field $A_i$ is periodic only up to a large gauge transformation, with winding number equal to the caloron's topological charge. This helps clarify the tunneling interpretation of these solutions, and their relation to Chern-Simons numbers and winding numbers.
A class of mathematical dualities have played a central role in mapping states in gauge theory to states in the spacetime string theory dual. This includes the classical Schur-Weyl duality between symmetric groups and Unitary groups, as well as generalisations involving Brauer and Hecke algebras. The physical string dualities involved include examples from the AdS/CFT correspondence as well as the string dual of two-dimensional Yang Mills.
We investigate the four-derivative free Weyl action for two-column mixed-symmetry field that makes use of maximal gauge symmetries. In flat space, the action can be uniquely determined from gauge and Weyl (trace shift) symmetry requirements. We show that there is a smooth and unique deformation of the flat action to (A)dS which keeps the same amount of gauge symmetries. This action admits a factorization into two distinct two-derivative actions having gauge parameters of different Young diagrams. Hence, this factorization pattern naturally extends that of the Weyl actions of symmetric higher s…
We use a de Sitter breaking graviton propagator to compute the tree order correlator between noncoincident Weyl tensors on a locally de Sitter background. An explicit, and very simple result is obtained, for any spacetime dimension D, in terms of a de Sitter invariant length function and the tensor basis constructed from the metric and derivatives of this length function. Our answer does not agree with the one derived previously by Kouris, but that result must be incorrect because it not transverse and lacks some of the algebraic symmetries of the Weyl tensor. Taking the coincidence limit of o…
In the standard model, electroweak theory is based on chiral gauge symmetry, which only contains massless fermions and gauge vectors. So the fundamental field equations are Weyl equations including gauge vectors. We deduced these Weyl equations without gauge vector from quadric surface in three dimensional oriented projective geometry. It showed that Weyl equations were equations of generating lines in the quadric surface. In other word, the geometric correspondence of spinor is generating lines of quadric surface in momentum space. It also showed that two spinors would generate a gauge vector…
We present the BRST formalism of a Weyl conformal gravity in Weyl geometry. Choosing the extended de Donder gauge-fixing condition (or harmonic gauge condition) for the general coordinate invariance and the new scalar gauge-fixing for the Weyl invariance we find that there is a Poincar${\rm{\acute{e}}}$-like $\IOSp(10|10)$ supersymmetry as in a Weyl invariant scalar-tensor gravity in Riemann geometry. We also point out that there is a gravitational conformal symmetry in quantum gravity although there is a massive Weyl gauge field as a result of spontaneous symmetry breakdown of Weyl gauge symm…
Starting from the Ginsparg-Wilson relation, a general construction of chiral gauge theories on the lattice is described. Local and global anomalies are easily discussed in this framework and a closed expression for the effective action can be obtained. Particular attention is paid to the non-abelian gauge anomaly, which is shown to be related to a local topological field on the lattice representing the Chern character in 4+2 dimensions.
It is demonstrated that a Stueckelberg-type gauge theory, coupled to the scalar-tensor theory of gravity, is invariant under both gauge and Weyl transformations. Unlike the pure Stueckelberg theory, this coupled Lagrangian has a genuine Weyl symmetry, with a non-vanishing current. The above is true in the Jordan frame, whereas in the Einstein frame, the same theory manifests as Proca theory in presence of pure gravity. It is found that broken scale invariance leads to simultaneous spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry.
The two-point Wightman function of the free photon field defined in a gauge-invariant manner is known to be equivalent to the field-strength two-point function in any spacetime that is topologically trivial. We show that the gauge-invariant graviton two-point function defined in a similar manner is equivalent to the Weyl-tensor two-point function in Minkowski space and in the Poincare patch of de Sitter space. This implies that in the Poincare patch of de Sitter space the gauge-invariant graviton two-point function decays like (distance)^(-4) as a function of coordinate distance for spacelike …
We consider Weyl's conformal gravity coupled to a complex matter field in Weyl geometry. It is shown that a Higgs potential naturally arises from a $\tilde R^2$ term in moving from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame. A massless Nambu-Goldstone boson, which stems from spontaneous symmetry breakdown of the Weyl gauge invariance, is absorbed into the Weyl gauge field, thereby the gauge field becoming massive. We present a model where the gravitational interaction generates a Higgs potential whose form is a perfect square. Finally, we show that a theory in the Jordan frame is gauge-equivalent …
In various dimensional Euclidean lattice gauge theories, we examine a compatibility of the Majorana decomposition and the charge conjugation property of lattice Dirac operators. In $8n$ and $1+8n$ dimensions, we find a difficulty to decompose a classical lattice action of the Dirac fermion into a system of the Majorana fermion and thus to obtain a factorized form of the Dirac determinant. Similarly, in $2+8n$ dimensions, there is a difficulty to decompose a classical lattice action of the Weyl fermion into a system of the Majorana--Weyl fermion and thus to obtain a factrized form of the Weyl d…
We construct a chiral gauge theory to describe fractionalization of fermions in graphene. Thereby we extend a recently proposed model, which relies on vortex formation. Our chiral gauge fields provide dynamics for the vortices and also couple to the fermions.
In this paper, we analytically compute the basic parameters of the p-wave holographic superconductors with Weyl geometrical corrections using the matching method. The explicit correspondence between the critical temperature $T_c$ and the dual charge density $ρ$ has been calculated as $T_c\proptoρ^{{1}{3}}$ and the dependence of the vacuum expectation value for the dual condensate operator $\cal{O}$ on the temperature has been found analytically in the form $<{\cal O}_{+}>\propto T_c^{{3}{2}}T^{Δ-{1}{2}}\sqrt{1-({T}{T_c})^3}$. The critical exponent ${1}{2}$ is an universal quantity according to…
