We explore the feasibility and limitations of using the 1.6um bump as a photometric redshift indicator and selection technique and use it to study the rest-frame H-band galaxy luminosity and stellar mass functions at redshift z~2. We use publicly available Spitzer/IRAC images in the GOODS fields and find that color selection in the IRAC bandpasses alone is comparable in completeness and contamination to BzK selection. We find that the shape of the 1.6um bump is robust, and photometric redshifts are not greatly affected by choice of model parameters. Comparison with spectroscopic redshifts shows photometric redshifts to be reliable. We create a rest-frame NIR selected catalog of galaxies at z~2 and construct a galaxy stellar mass function (SMF). Comparisons with other SMFs at approximately the same redshift but determined using shorter wavelengths show good agreement. This agreement suggests that selection at bluer wavelengths does not miss a significant amount of stellar mass in passive galaxies. Comparison with SMFs at other redshifts shows evidence for the downsizing scenario of galaxy evolution. We conclude by pointing out the potential for using the 1.6um technique to select high-redshift galaxies with the JWST, whose lambda > 0.6 um coverage will not be well suited to selecting galaxies using techniques that require imaging at shorter wavelengths.
A novel technique is employed for estimating attenuation curves in galaxies where only photometry and spectroscopic redshifts are available. This technique provides a powerful measure of particular extinction features such as the UV bump at 2175\A, which has been observed in environments ranging from the Milky Way to high-redshift star-forming galaxies. Knowledge of the typical strength of the UV bump as a function of environment and redshift is crucial for converting restframe UV flux into star formation rates. The UV bump will impart a unique signature as it moves through various filters due…
We present a new two-color algorithm, the "Stellar Bump Sequence" (SBS), that is optimized for robustly identifying candidate high-redshift galaxy clusters in combined wide-field optical and mid-infrared (MIR) data. The SBS algorithm is a fusion of the well-tested cluster red-sequence method of Gladders & Yee (2000) with the MIR 3.6um - 4.5um cluster detection method developed by Papovich (2008). As with the cluster red-sequence method, the SBS identifies candidate overdensities within 3.6um - 4.5um color slices, which are the equivalent of a rest-frame 1.6um stellar bump "red-sequence". In ad…
Recently, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman) Project raised the possibility of adding another filter to Roman. Based on the Filter Working Group's recommendations, this filter may be a K-band filter, extending significantly redder than the current-reddest F184. Among other scientific possibilities, this K filter raises the possibility of measuring SNe Ia in the rest-frame NIR out to higher redshifts than is possible with the current filter complement. I perform a simple survey optimization for NIR SN Ia distances with Roman, simultaneously optimizing both filter cutoffs and survey s…
We report detections of 39 2175-Å dust extinction bump candidates associated with strong Mg II absorption lines at z$\sim$ 1--1.8 on quasar spectra in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR3. These strong Mg II absorption line systems are detected among 2,951 strong Mg II absorbers with the rest equivalent width $W_r\lambda2796 >$ 1.0Å at $1.0 < z < 1.86$, which is part of a full sample of 7,421 strong Mg II absorbers compiled by Prochter et al. (2006). The redshift range of the absorbers is chosen to allow the 2175-Å extinction features to be completely covered within the SDSS spectrograph operat…
We investigate rest-frame near-infrared (NIR) morphologies of a sample of 139 galaxies with M_{s} >= 1 x 10^{10} M_{sun} at z=0.8-1.2 in the GOODS-North field using our deep NIR imaging data (MOIRCS Deep Survey, MODS). We focus on Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs), which dominate high star formation rate (SFR) density at z~1, in the sample identified by cross-correlating with the Spitzer/MIPS 24um source catalog. We perform two-dimensional light profile fitting of the z~1 galaxies in the Ks-band (rest-frame J-band) with a single component Sersic model. We find that at z~1, ~90% of LIRGs have …
Dust attenuation curves in external galaxies are useful to study their dust properties as well as to interpret their intrinsic spectral energy distributions. In particular the presence or absence of a UV bump at 2175 A remains an open issue which has consequences on the interpretation of broad band colours of distant galaxies. We study the dust attenuation curve in the UV range at z >1. In particular we search for the presence of a UV bump. We use deep photometric data of the CDFS obtained with intermediate and broad band filters by the MUSYC project to sample the UV rest-frame of galaxies wit…
We present SED modeling of a sample of 34 K-selected galaxies at z ~ 2.3. These galaxies have NIR spectroscopy that samples the rest-frame Balmer/4000A break as well as deep photometry in thirteen broadband filters. New to our analysis is IRAC data that extend the SEDs into the rest-frame NIR. Comparing parameters determined from SED fits with and without the IRAC data we find that the IRAC photometry significantly improves the confidence intervals of Tau, A_v, stellar mass, and SFR for individual galaxies, but does not systematically alter the mean parameters of the sample. We use the IRAC da…
The properties of dust attenuation at rest-frame UV wavelengths are inferred from very high-quality FORS2 spectra of 78 galaxies from the GMASS survey at 1<z<2.5. These objects complement a previously investigated sample of 108 UV-luminous galaxies at similar redshifts, selected from the FDF spectroscopic survey, the K20 survey, and the GDDS. The shape of the UV extinction curve is constrained by a parametric description of the rest-frame UV continuum. The UV bump is further characterised by fitting Lorentzian-like profiles. Spectra exhibit a significant 2175A feature in at least 30% of the ca…
This letter utilizes composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs) constructed from NEWFIRM Medium-Band Survey photometry to constrain the dust attenuation curve in 0.5<z<2.0 galaxies. Based on similarities between the full SED shapes (0.3-8 micron), we have divided galaxies in 32 different spectral classes and stacked their photometry. As each class contains galaxies over a range in redshift, the resulting rest-frame SEDs are well-sampled in wavelength and show various spectral features including Halpha and the UV dust bump at 2175 Angstrom. We fit all composite SEDs with flexible stellar po…
We study how the spectral fitting of galaxies, in terms of light fractions derived in one spectral region translates into another region, by using results from evolutionary synthesis models. In particular, we examine propagation dependencies on Evolutionary Population Synthesis (EPS, {\sc grasil}, {\sc galev}, Maraston and {\sc galaxev}) models, age, metallicity, and stellar evolution tracks over the near-UV---near infrared (NUV---NIR, 3500Å to 2.5\mc) spectral region. Our main results are: as expected, young ($t \lesssim$ 400 Myr) stellar population fractions derived in the optical cannot be …
The UV bump is a broad absorption feature centered at 2175Å that is seen in the attenuation/extinction curve of some galaxies, but its origin is not well known. Here, we use a sample of 86 star-forming galaxies at z=1.7-2.7 with deep rest-frame UV spectroscopy from the MUSE HUDF Survey to study the connection between the strength of the observed UV 2175Å bump and the Spitzer/MIPS 24 micron photometry, which at the redshift range of our sample probes mid-IR polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at ~6-8 micron. The sample has robust spectroscopic redshifts and consists of typical main-s…
(Abridged) Deep NB359 imaging with Subaru by Iwata et al. have detected surprisingly strong Lyman continuum (LyC; ~900A in the rest-frame) from some LAEs at z=3.1. However, the redshifts might be misidentified due to a narrow wavelength coverage in previous spectroscopy. We here present new deep spectroscopy covering the observed 4,000-7,000A with VLT/VIMOS and Subaru/FOCAS of 8 LAEs detected in NB359. All the 8 objects have only one detectable emission line around 4,970A which is most likely to be Ly-A at z=3.1, and thus, the objects are certainly LAEs at the redshift. However, 5 of them show…
Context: The combination of optical and near-infrared (NIR) colours has the potential to break the age/metallicity degeneracy and offers a better metallicity sensitivity than optical colours alone. Previous studies of extragalactic globular clusters (GCs) with this colour combination, however, have suffered from small samples or have been restricted to a few galaxies. Aims: We compile a homogeneous and representative sample of GC systems with multi-band photometry to be used in subsequent papers where ages and metallicity distributions will be studied. Methods: We acquired deep K-band images o…
We present a new release of the GALFORM semi-analytical model of galaxy formation and evolution, which exploits a Millennium Simulation-class N-body run performed with the WMAP7 cosmology. We use this new model to study the impact of the choice of stellar population synthesis (SPS) model on the predicted evolution of the galaxy luminosity function. The semi-analytical model is run using seven different SPS models. In each case we obtain the rest-frame luminosity function in the far-ultra-violet, optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelength ranges. We find that both the predicted rest-frame ultra…
We present sensitive near--infrared VLT ISAAC spectroscopic observations of the z=6.08 quasar SDSS J030331.40-001912.9. This QSO is more than a magnitude fainter than other QSOs at z~6 for which NIR spectroscopy has been obtained to date and is therefore presumably more representative of the QSO population at the end of Cosmic Reionization. Combining rest--frame UV continuum luminosity with the width measurements of the Mg II and C IV lines, we derive a black hole mass of 2(+1.0/-0.5) x 10^8 solar masses, the lowest mass observed for z~6 QSOs to date, and derive an Eddington ratio of 1.6(+0.4/…
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of 22 ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z~2 with extremely red R-[24] colors (called dust-obscured galaxies, or DOGs) which have a local maximum in their spectral energy distribution (SED) at rest-frame 1.6um associated with stellar emission. These sources, which we call "bump DOGs", have star-formation rates of 400-4000 Msun/yr and have redshifts derived from mid-IR spectra which show strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission --- a sign of vigorous on-going star-formation. Using a uniform morphological analysis, we look for quan…
The interpretation that bimodal colour distributions of globular clusters (GCs) reflect bimodal metallicity distributions has been challenged. Non-linearities in the colour to metallicity conversions caused by the horizontal branch (HB) stars may be responsible for transforming a unimodal metallicity distribution into a bimodal (optical) colour distribution. We study optical/near-infrared (NIR) colour distributions of the GC systems in 14 E/S0 galaxies. We test whether the bimodal feature, generally present in optical colour distributions, remains in the optical/NIR ones. The latter colour com…
Accurately weigh the masses of SMBH in AGN is currently possible for only a small group of local and bright broad-line AGN through reverberation mapping (RM). Statistical demographic studies can be carried out considering the empirical scaling relation between the size of the BLR and the AGN optical continuum luminosity. However, there are still biases against low-luminosity or reddened AGN, in which the rest-frame optical radiation can be severely absorbed/diluted by the host and the BLR emission lines could be hard to detect. Our purpose is to widen the applicability of virial-based SE relat…
