A novel technique is employed for estimating attenuation curves in galaxies where only photometry and spectroscopic redshifts are available. This technique provides a powerful measure of particular extinction features such as the UV bump at 2175\A, which has been observed in environments ranging from the Milky Way to high-redshift star-forming galaxies. Knowledge of the typical strength of the UV bump as a function of environment and redshift is crucial for converting restframe UV flux into star formation rates. The UV bump will impart a unique signature as it moves through various filters due to redshifting; its presence can therefore be disentangled from other stellar population effects. The utility of this technique is demonstrated with a large sample of galaxies drawn from the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey. The observed B-R color of star-forming galaxies at 0.6<z<1.4 disfavors the presence of a UV bump as strong as observed in the Milky Way, and instead favors restframe UV (1800A<lambda<3000A) attenuation curves similar to the Milky Way without a UV bump or a power-law with index delta=-0.7. Stronger constraints on the strength of the UV bump in galaxies can be achieved if independent constraints on the V-band optical depth are available.
Superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) have been detected to $z\sim4$ and can be detected to $z\gtrsim15$ using current and upcoming facilities. SLSNe are extremely UV luminous, and hence objects at $z\gtrsim7$ are detected exclusively via their rest-frame UV using optical and infrared facilities. SLSNe have great utility in multiple areas of stellar and galactic evolution. Here, we explore the potential use of SLSNe type-I as high-redshift cosmological distance indicators in their rest-frame UV. Using a SLSNe-I sample in the redshift range $1\lesssim z\lesssim 3$, we investigate correlations betwee…
We present new calibrations of far-ultraviolet (FUV) attenuation as derived from the total infrared to FUV luminosity ratio (IRX) and the FUV-NUV color. We find that the IRX-corrected FUV luminosities are tightly and linearly correlated with the attenuation-corrected Hα luminosities (as measured from the Balmer decrement), with a rms scatter of $\pm 0.09$ dex. The ratios of these attenuation-corrected FUV to Hα luminosities are consistent with evolutionary synthesis model predictions, assuming a constant star formation rate over 100 Myr, solar metallicity and either a Salpeter or a Kroupa IMF …
(Abridged) The effective extinction law (attenuation behavior) in galaxies in the emitted ultraviolet is well known only for actively star-forming objects and combines effects of the grain properties, fine structure in the dust distribution, and relative distributions of stars and dust. We use GALEX, XMM Optical Monitor, and HST data to explore the UV attenuation in the outer parts of spiral disks which are backlit by other UV-bright galaxies, starting with candidates provided by Galaxy Zoo participants. Our analysis incorporates galaxy symmetry, using non-overlapping regions of each galaxy to…
The correlation between infrared-to-ultraviolet luminosity ratio and ultraviolet color, i.e. the IRX-UV relation, was regarded as a prevalent recipe for correcting extragalactic dust attenuation. Considerable dispersion in this relation discovered for normal galaxies, however, complicates its usability. In order to investigate the cause of the dispersion, in this paper, we select five nearby spiral galaxies, and perform spatially resolved studies on each of the galaxies, with a combination of ultraviolet and infrared imaging data. We measure all positions within each galaxy and divide the extr…
Merger processes play an important role in galaxy formation and evolution. To study the influence of merger processes on the evolution of dust properties and cosmic star formation rate, we investigate a local sample of major merger galaxies and a control sample of isolated galaxies using GALEX ultraviolet (UV) and Spitzer infrared (IR) images. Through a statistical study, we find that dust attenuation in merger galaxies is enhanced with respect to isolated galaxies. We find this enhancement is contributed mainly by spiral galaxies in spiral-spiral (S-S) pairs, and increases with the increasing…
The attenuation of starlight by interstellar dust is investigated in a sample of low redshift, disk-dominated star-forming galaxies using photometry from GALEX and SDSS. By considering broadband colors as a function of galaxy inclination we are able to confidently separate trends arising from increasing dust opacity from possible differences in stellar populations, since stellar populations do not correlate with inclination. All commonly employed dust attenuation curves (such as the Calzetti curve for starbursts, or a power-law curve) provide poor fits to the ultraviolet colors for moderately …
We select galaxies in UV rest-frame at z=0, z~0.7 and z~1 together with a sample of LBGs at z~1, the samples are built in order to sample the same range of luminosity at any redshift. The evolution of the IR and UV luminosities with z is analysed for individual galaxies as well as in terms of luminosity functions. The L_IR/L_UV ratio is used to measure dust attenuation. This ratio does not exhibit a strong evolution with z for the bulk of our sample galaxies but some trends are found for galaxies with a strong dust attenuation and for UV luminous sources: galaxies with L_IR/L_UV>10 are more fr…
We present an application of the da Cunha, Charlot & Elbaz (2008) model of the spectral energy distribution (SEDs) of galaxies from the ultraviolet to far-infrared to a small pilot sample of purely star-forming Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). We interpret the observed SEDs of 16 ULIRGs using this physically-motivated model which accounts for the emission of stellar populations from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared and for the attenuation by dust in two components: an optically-thick starburst component and the diffuse ISM. The infrared emission is computed by assuming that all t…
Compared to starburst galaxies, normal star forming galaxies have been shown to display a much larger dispersion of the dust attenuation at fixed reddening through studies of the IRX-beta diagram (the IR/UV ratio "IRX" versus the UV color "beta"). To investigate the causes of this larger dispersion and attempt to isolate second parameters, we have used GALEX UV, ground-based optical, and Spitzer infrared imaging of 8 nearby galaxies, and examined the properties of individual UV and 24 micron selected star forming regions. We concentrated on star-forming regions, in order to isolate simpler sta…
We report results from the Wyoming Survey for H-alpha (WySH), a comprehensive four-square degree survey to probe the evolution of star-forming galaxies over the latter half of the age of the Universe. We have supplemented the H-alpha data from WySH with infrared data from the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic (SWIRE) Survey and ultraviolet data from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Deep Imaging Survey. This dataset provides a multi-wavelength look at the evolution of the attenuation by dust, and here we compare a traditional measure of dust attenuation (L(TIR)/L(FUV)) to a diagnost…
Galaxies' rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) properties are often used to directly infer the degree to which dust obscuration affects the measurement of star formation rates. While much recent work has focused on calibrating dust attenuation in galaxies selected at rest-frame ultraviolet wavelengths, locally and at high-$z$, here we investigate attenuation in dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) selected at far-infrared wavelengths. By combining multiwavelength coverage across 0.15--500\,$μ$m in the COSMOS field, in particular making use of {\it Herschel} imaging, and a rich dataset on local galaxies…
Using GALFORM, a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation in the Lambda cold dark matter cosmology, we study the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) colours of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) in the redshift range 2.5 < z < 10. As the impact of dust on UV luminosity can be dramatic, our model includes a self-consistent computation of dust attenuation based on a radiative transfer model. We find that intrinsically brighter galaxies suffer stronger dust attenuation than fainter ones, though the relation has a large scatter. The model predicts galaxies with UV colours consistent with the colour selection re…
SPICA is one of the key projects for the future. Not only its instrument suite will open up a discovery window but they will also allow to physically understand some of the phenomena that we still do not understand in the high-redshift universe. Using new homogeneous luminosity functions (LFs) in the Far-Ultraviolet (FUV) from VVDS and in the Far-Infrared (FIR) from Herschel/PEP and Herschel/HerMES, we studied the evolution of the dust attenuation with redshift. With this information, we are able to estimate the redshift evolution of the total (FUV + FIR) star formation rate density (SFRD_TOT)…
We present a systematic study of the shape of the dust attenuation curve in star-forming galaxies from the far ultraviolet to the near infrared (0.15-2microns), as a function of specific star formation rate (sSFR) and axis ratio (b/a), for galaxies with and without a significant bulge. Our sample comprises 23,000 (15,000) galaxies with a median redshift of 0.07, with photometric entries in the SDSS, UKIDSS-LAS (and GALEX-AIS) survey catalogues and emission line measurements from the SDSS spectroscopic survey. We develop a new pair-matching technique to isolate the dust attenuation curves from …
Cosmic far-infrared background (CFIRB) probes unresolved dusty star-forming galaxies across cosmic time and is complementary to ultraviolet and optical observations of galaxy evolution. In this work, we interpret the observed CFIRB anisotropies using an empirical model based on resolved galaxies in ultraviolet and optical surveys. Our model includes stellar mass functions, star-forming main sequence, and dust attenuation. We find that the commonly used linear Kennicutt relation between infrared luminosity and star formation rate overproduces the observed CFIRB amplitudes. The observed CFIRB re…
The observed ultraviolet continuum (UVC) slope is potentially a powerful diagnostic of dust obscuration in star forming galaxies. However, the intrinsic slope is also sensitive to the form of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and to the recent star formation and metal enrichment histories of a galaxy. Using the galform semi-analytical model of galaxy formation, we investigate the intrinsic distribution of UVC slopes. For star-forming galaxies, we find that the intrinsic distribution of UVC slopes at z=0, parameterised by the power law index beta, has a standard deviation of sigma_beta=0.…
We study the link between observed ultraviolet luminosity, stellar mass, and dust attenuation within rest-frame UV-selected samples at z~ 4, 3, and 1.5. We measure by stacking at 250, 350, and 500 um in the Herschel/SPIRE images from the HerMES program the average infrared luminosity as a function of stellar mass and UV luminosity. We find that dust attenuation is mostly correlated with stellar mass. There is also a secondary dependence with UV luminosity: at a given UV luminosity, dust attenuation increases with stellar mass, while at a given stellar mass it decreases with UV luminosity. We p…
The nearby universe remains the best laboratory to understand physical properties of galaxies and is a reference for any comparison with high redshift observations. The all sky (or very large) surveys performed from the ultraviolet (UV) to the far-infrared (far-IR) gives us large datasets with a very large wavelength coverage to perform a reference study. We want to investigate dust attenuation characteristics as well as star formation rate (SFR) calibrations on a sample of nearby galaxies observed over 13 bands from 0.15 to 160 microns. A sample of 363 galaxies is built from the AKARI /FIS al…
We present a study of the prevalence, strength, and kinematics of ultraviolet FeII and MgII emission lines in 212 star-forming galaxies at z = 1 selected from the DEEP2 survey. We find FeII* emission in composite spectra assembled on the basis of different galaxy properties, indicating that FeII* emission is prevalent at z = 1. In these composites, FeII* emission is observed at roughly the systemic velocity. At z = 1, we find that the strength of FeII* emission is most strongly modulated by dust attenuation, and is additionally correlated with redshift, star-formation rate, and [OII] equivalen…
(Abridged) While the Swift satellite is primarily designed to study gamma-ray bursts, its ultraviolet and optical imaging and spectroscopy capabilities are also being used for a variety of scientific programs. In this study, we use the UV/Optical Telescope (UVOT) instrument aboard Swift to discover 0.5<z<2 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). UVOT has covered ~266 arcmin^2 at >60ks exposure time, achieving a limiting magnitude of u<24.5, in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S). Applying UVOT near-ultraviolet color selection, we select 50 UV-dropouts from this UVOT CDF-S data. We match the selected sou…
We summarize the principles and fundamental ingredients of evolutionary synthesis models, which are stellar evolution, stellar atmospheres, the IMF, star-formation histories, nebular emission, and also attenuation from the ISM and IGM. The chapter focusses in particular on issues of importance for predictions of metal-poor and Population III dominated galaxies. We review recent predictions for the main physical properties and related observables of star-forming galaxies based on up-to-date inputs. The predicted metallicity dependence of these quantities and their physical causes are discussed.…
The relation between the ratio of infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) flux densities (the infrared excess: IRX) and the slope of the UV spectrum (β) of galaxies plays a fundamental role in the evaluation of the dust attenuation of star forming galaxies especially at high redshifts. Many authors, however, pointed out that there is a significant dispersion and/or deviation from the originally proposed IRX-βrelation depending on sample selection. We reexamined the IRX-βrelation by measuring the far- and near-UV flux densities of the original sample galaxies with GALEX and AKARI imaging data, and c…
We present the first characterisation of the average dust attenuation curve at $z\sim1.3$ by combining rest-frame ultraviolet through near-IR photometry with Balmer decrement ($\mathrm{H}α$/$\mathrm{H}β$) constraints for $\sim$900 galaxies with $8\lesssim\log (M_\star /M_\odot)<10.2$ at $0.75<z<1.5$ in the HST WFC3 IR Spectroscopic Parallel (WISP) and 3D-HST grism surveys. Using galaxies in SDSS, we establish that the ($\mathrm{H}α$+[NII])/[OIII] line ratio and stellar mass are good proxies for the Balmer decrement in low-spectral resolution grism data when only upper-limits on $\mathrm{H}β$ a…
Multi-band photometric images from ultraviolet and optical to infrared are collected to derive spatially resolved properties of a nearby Scd type galaxy M 101. With evolutionary stellar population synthesis models, two-dimensional distributions and radial profiles of age, metallicity, dust attenuation, and star formation timescale in the form of the Sandage star formation history are obtained. When fitting with the models, we use the IRX-$A_\mathrm{FUV}$ relation, found to depend on a second parameter of birth rate b (ratio of present and past-averaged star formation rate), to constrain the du…
[abridged] The ALESS survey has followed-up a sample of 122 sub-millimeter sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South at 870um with ALMA, allowing to pinpoint the positions of sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) to 0.3'' and to find their precise counterparts at different wavelengths. This enabled the first compilation of the multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a statistically reliable survey of SMGs. In this paper, we present a new calibration of the MAGPHYS modelling code that is optimized to fit these UV-to-radio SEDs of z>1 star-forming galaxies using an energy balanc…
We use multiwavelength data from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) and Herschel ATLAS (H-ATLAS) surveys to compare the relationship between various dust obscuration measures in galaxies. We explore the connections between the ultraviolet (UV) spectral slope, $β$, the Balmer decrement, and the far infrared (IR) to $150\,$nm far ultraviolet (FUV) luminosity ratio. We explore trends with galaxy mass, star formation rate (SFR) and redshift in order to identify possible systematics in these various measures. We reiterate the finding of other authors that there is a large scatter between the Balme…
We present a suite of 34 high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations consisting of thousands of halos up to M_halo~10^12 M_sun (M_star~10^10.5 M_sun) at z>=5 from the Feedback in Realistic Environments project. We post-process our simulations with a three-dimensional Monte Carlo dust radiative transfer code to study dust extinction, dust emission, and dust temperature within these simulated z>=5 galaxies. Our sample forms a tight correlation between infrared excess (IRX=F_IR/F_UV) and ultraviolet (UV)-continuum slope (beta_UV), despite the patchy, clumpy dust geometry shown in our simulat…
We discuss the rest-frame UV emission between 5< z < 7 from the MareNostrum High-z Universe, a SPH simulation done with more than 2 billion particles. Cosmological simulations of galaxy formation generally overpredict the UV restframe luminosity function at high redshift, both at the bright and faint ends. In this Letter we explore a dust attenuation model where a larger extinction is applied to star populations younger than a given age, mimicking the effect of a clumpy interstellar medium. We show that this scenario fits reasonably well both the UV luminosity functions and the UV-continuum sl…
We use a spectroscopic sample of 286 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 1<z<3 from the GMASS survey to study different star formation rate (SFR) estimators. Infrared (IR) data are used to derive empirical calibrations to correct ultraviolet (UV) and [OII]λ3727 luminosities for dust extinction and dust-corrected estimates of SFR. In the selection procedure we fully exploit the available spectroscopic information. On the basis of three continuum indices, we are able to identify and exclude from the sample galaxies in which old stellar populations might bring a non-negligible contribution to IR lumi…
Unusual extinction curves of high-redshift QSOs have been taken as evidence that dust is primarily produced by supernovae at high redshift. In particular, the 3000 A Todini-Ferrara-Maiolino kink in the extinction curve of the z = 6.20 SDSS J1048+4637 has been attributed to supernova dust. Here we discuss the challenges in inferring robust extinction curves of high-redshift QSOs and critically assess previous claims of detection of supernova dust. In particular, we address the sensitivity to the choice of intrinsic QSO spectrum, the need for a long wavelength baseline, and the drawbacks in fitt…
We present an enhanced version of the multiwavelength spectral modeling code MAGPHYS that allows the estimation of galaxy photometric redshift and physical properties (e.g., stellar mass, star formation rate, dust attenuation) simultaneously, together with robust characterization of their uncertainties. The self-consistent modeling over ultraviolet to radio wavelengths in MAGPHYS+photo-z is unique compared to standard photometric redshift codes. The broader wavelength consideration is particularly useful for breaking certain degeneracies in color vs. redshift for dusty galaxies with limited ob…
We present an analysis of 98 galaxies of low-dust content, selected from the Spitzer Local Volume Legacy survey, aimed at examining the relation between the ultraviolet (UV) color, beta, and dust attenuation in normal star-forming galaxies. The IRX-beta diagram relates the total dust attenuation in a galaxy, traced by the far-IR (FIR) to UV ratio, to the observed UV color, indicated by beta. Previous research has indicated that while starburst galaxies exhibit a relatively tight IRX-beta relation, normal star-forming galaxies do not, and have a much larger spread in the total-IR to far-UV (FUV…
