Accurately weigh the masses of SMBH in AGN is currently possible for only a small group of local and bright broad-line AGN through reverberation mapping (RM). Statistical demographic studies can be carried out considering the empirical scaling relation between the size of the BLR and the AGN optical continuum luminosity. However, there are still biases against low-luminosity or reddened AGN, in which the rest-frame optical radiation can be severely absorbed/diluted by the host and the BLR emission lines could be hard to detect. Our purpose is to widen the applicability of virial-based SE relations to reliably measure the BH masses also for low-luminosity or intermediate/type 2 AGN that are missed by current methodology. We achieve this goal by calibrating virial relations based on unbiased quantities: the hard X-ray luminosities, in the 2-10 keV and 14-195 keV bands, that are less sensitive to galaxy contamination, and the FWHM of the most important rest-frame NIR and optical BLR emission lines. We built a sample of RM AGN having both X-ray luminosity and broad optical/NIR FWHM measurements available in order to calibrate new virial BH mass estimators. We found that the FWHM of the H$α$, H$β$ and NIR lines (i.e. Pa$α$, Pa$β$ and HeI$λ$10830) all correlate each other having negligible or small offsets. This result allowed us to derive virial BH mass estimators based on either the 2-10 keV or 14-195 keV luminosity. We took also into account the recent determination of the different virial coefficients $f$ for pseudo and classical bulges. By splitting the sample according to the bulge type and adopting separate $f$ factors we found that our virial relations predict BH masses of AGN hosted in pseudobulges $\sim$0.5 dex smaller than in classical bulges. Assuming the same average $f$ factor for both populations, a difference of $\sim$0.2 dex is still found.
The masses of supermassive black holes in broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be measured through reverberation mapping, but this method currently cannot be applied to very large samples or to high-redshift AGNs. As a practical alternative, one can devise empirical scaling relations, based on the correlation between broad-line region size and AGN luminosity and the relation between black hole mass and bulge stellar velocity dispersion, to estimate the virial masses of black holes from single-epoch spectroscopy. We present a revised calibration of the black hole mass estimator for the …

Motivated by the challenges of calculating the dynamical masses of late-type galaxies (LTGs) and the enormous amount of data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we calculate virial masses of a sample of approximately 126,000 LTGs from the sixteenth data release of the SDSS. The virial mass estimations were made considering Newtonian mechanics, virial equilibrium and velocity dispersion from stars and gas. The procedure gave as a result seven mass estimations for each galaxy. The calculated masses were calibrated using a sample of spiral galaxies with velocity rotation curves. Considering…
JADES: Detecting [OIII]$λ4363$ Emitters and Testing Strong Line Calibrations in the High-$z$ Universe with Ultra-deep JWST/NIRSpec Spectroscopy up to $z \sim 9.5$
We report the discovery of a buried, active supermassive black hole in SDSS J085153.64+392611.76, a bulgeless Seyfert 2 (Sy2) galaxy. Keck near-infrared observations reveal a hidden broad line region, allowing for the rare case where strong constraints can be placed on both the black hole mass and bulge component. Using virial mass estimators, we obtain a black hole mass of log($M_{\rm{BH}}/M_{\odot}$) = $6.78 \pm 0.50$. This is one of the only Sy2 AGN hosted in a bulgeless galaxy with a virial black hole mass estimate and could provide important constraints on the formation scenarios of the b…
Astrophysical Distance Scale VII: A Self-Consistent, Multi-Wavelength Calibration of the Slopes and Relative Zero Points for the Run of Luminosity with Color of Stars Defining the Tip of the Red Giant Branch
Using a compiled sample of 34 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with measured H$β$ time lags from the reverberation mapping (RM) method and measured bulge stellar velocity dispersions $σ_*$, we calculate the virial factor $f$ by assuming that the RM AGNs intrinsically obey the same $M_{\rm BH}-σ_*$ relation as quiescent galaxies, where $M_{\rm BH}$ is the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH). Considering four tracers of the velocity of the broad-line regions (BLRs), i.e., the H$β$ line width or line dispersion from the mean or rms spectrum, there are four kinds of the factor $f$. …
A specific modification of Newtonian dynamics known as MOND has been shown to reproduce the dynamics of most astrophysical systems at different scales without invoking non-baryonic dark matter (DM). There is, however, a long-standing unsolved problem when MOND is applied to rich clusters of galaxies in the form of a deficit (by a factor around two) of predicted dynamical mass derived from the virial theorem with respect to observations. In this article we approach the virial theorem using the velocity dispersion of cluster members along the line of sight rather than using the cluster temperatu…
Dust extinction and stellar confusion by the Milky Way reduce the efficiency of detecting galaxies at low Galactic latitudes, creating the so-called Zone of Avoidance. This stands as a stumbling block in charting the distribution of galaxies and cosmic flow fields, and therewith our understanding of the local dynamics in the Universe (CMB dipole, convergence radius of bulk flows). For instance, ZoA galaxies are generally excluded from the whole-sky Tully-Fisher Surveys ($|b| \leq 5^\circ$) even if catalogued. We show here that by fine-tuning the near-infrared TF relation, there is no reason no…
Adopting the SPECTRUM package, we have synthesized a set of 2,890 Near-InfraRed (NIR) synthetic spectra with a resolution and wavelength sampling similar to the SDSS and the forthcoming LAMOST spectra. During the synthesis, we have applied the `New grids of ATLAS9 Model Atmosphere' to provide a grid of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) model atmospheres. This synthetic stellar library is composed of 1,350 solor scaled abundance (SSA) and 1,530 non-solar scaled abundance (NSSA) spectra, grounding on which we have defined a new set of NIR CaII triplet indices and an index CaT as the sum of t…
I consider whether we can significantly improve the Cardelli et al. (1989) family of extinction laws using new data and techniques. There are six different aspects that need to be treated: The use of monochromatic quantities, the three different wavelength regimes (NIR, optical and UV), the sample, and the photometric calibration. Excluding the behavior in the NIR and UV, I discuss the other four aspects and propose a new family of extinction laws derived from VLT/FLAMES and HST/WFC3 data.
Observations and numerical simulations have shown that the relation between the mass scaled with the critical density of the universe and the X-ray temperature of galaxy clusters is approximately represented by $M_Δ\propto T_X^{3/2}$ (e.g. $Δ=500$). This relation is often interpreted as evidence that clusters are in virial equilibrium. However, the recently discovered fundamental plane (FP) of clusters indicates that the temperature of clusters primarily depends on a combination of the characteristic mass $M_s$ and radius $r_s$ of the Navarro-Frenk-White profile rather than $M_Δ$. Moreover, th…

The inter-line comparison between high- and low-ionization emission lines has yielded a wealth of information on the quasar broad line region (BLR) structure and dynamics, including perhaps the earliest unambiguous evidence in favor of a disk + wind structure in radio-quiet quasars. We carried out an analysis of the CIV 1549 and Hbeta line profiles of 28 Hamburg-ESO high luminosity quasars and of 48 low-z, low luminosity sources in order to test whether the high-ionization line CIV 1549 width could be correlated with Hbeta and be used as a virial broadening estimator. We analyze intermediate- …

We present rest-frame optical emission-line flux ratio measurements for five $z>5$ galaxies observed by the JWST Near-Infared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) in the SMACS 0723 Early Release Observations. We add several quality-control and post-processing steps to the NIRSpec pipeline reduction products in order to ensure reliable relative flux calibration of emission lines that are closely separated in wavelength, despite the uncertain \textit{absolute} spectrophotometry of the current version of the reductions. Compared to $z\sim3$ galaxies in the literature, the $z>5$ galaxies have similar [OIII]$λ$5…

We have started an ambitious program to determine if the full diversity of extinction laws is real or if some of it is due to calibration or methodological issues. Here we start by analyzing the information on NIR extinction in a 2MASS stellar sample with good quality photometry and very red colours. We calculate the extinction at 1 $μ$m, $A_1$, and the power-law exponent, $α$ ($A_λ= A_1 λ^{-α}$), for the 2MASS stars located in the extinction trajectory in the $H-K$ vs. $J-H$ plane expected for red giants with $A_1 > 5$ mag. We test the validity of the assumption about the nature of those star…
Context. [...] One of the most efficient methods is the measurement of the equivalent width (EW) of the Calcium II Triplet (CaT), corrected for the luminosity and temperature effects via magnitude differences from the horizontal branch (HB). Methods. We use the Ks magnitude difference between the star and the reddest part of the HB (RHB) to generate reduced equivalent widths (rEW) from the datasets presented in Saviane et al. (2012) and Rutledge et al. (1997). Subsequently we calibrated these rEW against three different metellicity (met) scales: the one presented in Carretta et al. (2009), the…
We present Stroemgren-NIR photometry of NGC6528 and its surroundings in the Baade's Window. uvby images were collected with EFOSC2@NTT, while NIR catalogs are based on VIRCAM@VISTA and SOFI@NTT data. The matching with HST photometry allowed us to obtain proper-motion-cleaned samples of cluster and bulge stars. The huge color sensitivity of Stroemgren-NIR CMDs helped us in disentangling age and metallicity effects. The RGB of NGC6528 is reproduced by scaled-solar isochrones with solar abundance or alpha-enhanced isochrones with the same iron content, and an age of t = 11+/-1 Gyr. These findings…

Our NIR WFC3/IR image mosaics combine the imaging from the UD…
We present a study of FeII emission in the near-infrared region (NIR) for 25 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to obtain information about the excitation mechanisms that power it and the location where it is formed. We employ a NIR FeII template derived in the literature and found that it successfully reproduces the observed FeII spectrum. The FeII bump at 9200 Angstroms detected in all objects studied confirms that Lyman-alpha fluorescence is always present in AGNs. The The correlation found between the flux of the 9200 Angstroms bump, the 1 micron lines and the optical FeII imply that Lyman-alph…

The mass estimator used to calculate black hole (BH) masses in broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) relies on a virial coefficient (the "$f$ factor") that is determined by comparing reverberation-mapped (RM) AGNs with measured bulge stellar velocity dispersions against the $M_{\rm BH}-σ_*$ relation of inactive galaxies. It has recently been recognized that only classical bulges and ellipticals obey a tight $M_{\rm BH}-σ_*$ relation; pseudobulges have a different zero point and much larger scatter. Motivated by these developments, we reevaluate the $f$ factor for RM AGNs with available $σ_*…
