We have conducted VLBA phase-referencing monitoring of H2O masers around the red supergiant, S Persei, for six years. We have fitted maser motions to a simple expanding-shell model with a common annual parallax and stellar proper motion, and obtained the annual parallax as 0.413+/-0.017 mas, and the stellar proper motion as (-0.49+/-0.23 mas/yr, -1.19+/-0.20 mas/yr) in right ascension and declination, respectively. The obtained annual parallax corresponds to the trigonometric distance of 2.42+0.11-0.09 kpc. Assuming the Galactocentric distance of the Sun of 8.5 kpc, the circular rotational velocity of the LSR at the distance of the Sun of 220 km/s, and a flat Galactic rotation curve, S Persei is suggested to have a non-circular motion deviating from the Galactic circular rotation for 15 km/s, which is mainly dominated by the anti rotation direction component of 12.9+/-2.9 km/s. This red supergiant is thought to belong to the OB association, Per OB1, so that this non-circular motion is representative of a motion of the OB association in the Milky Way. This non-circular motion is somewhat larger than that explained by the standard density-wave theory for a spiral galaxy, and is attributed to either a cluster shuffling of the OB association, or to non-linear interactions between non-stationary spiral arms and multi-phase interstellar media. The latter comes from a new view of a spiral arm formation in the Milky Way suggested by recent large N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics numerical simulations.
We discuss the unique opportunities for maser astrometry with the inclusion of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) networks. The first phase of the SKA will enable observations of hydroxyl and methanol masers, positioning the latter to an accuracy of 5 microarcseconds, and the second phase may allow water maser observations. These observations will provide trigonometric distances with errors as small as 1%. The unrivalled sensitivity of the SKA will enable large-scale surveys and, through joint operations, will turn any VLBI network into a fast astromet…

In recent years, radio interferometric observations have achieved high accuracy in determining the absolute values of trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions of maser radiation sources and radio stars. The error in determining the trigonometric parallaxes of these objects averages about 10 microarcseconds, which allows us to confidently study the geometric and kinematic properties of the distribution of stars located at great distances from the Sun, up to the center of the Galaxy. This article provides an overview of the main results of studying the structure and kinematics of the Galaxy, …

We compare the parallaxes of stars from VLBI astrometry in the literature to those in the Gaia DR2 catalog. Our full sample contains young stellar objects, evolved AGB stars, pulsars and other radio stars. Excluding AGB stars, which show significant discrepancies between Gaia and VLBI parallaxes, and stars in binary systems, we obtain an average, systematic, parallax offset of $-75 \pm 29~μ$as for Gaia DR2, consistent with their estimate of a parallax zero-point between $-100$ and 0 $μ$as.

Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) astrometry is a well established technique for achieving $\pm10~μ$as parallax accuracies at frequencies well above 10~GHz. At lower frequencies, uncompensated interferometer delays associated with the ionosphere play the dominant role in limiting the astrometric accuracy. Multiview is a novel VLBI calibration method, which uses observations of multiple quasars to accurately model and remove time-variable, directional-dependent changes to the interferometer delay. Here we extend the Multiview technique by phase referencing data to the target source ("inv…
With the publication of Gaia DR2, 1.3 billion stars now have public parallax and proper motion measurements. In this contribution, we compare the results for sources that have both optical and radio measurements, focusing on circumstellar masers. For these large, variable and bright AGB stars, the VLBI astrometry results can be more robust. Moreover, there are a number of applications where VLBI astrometry provides unique data for studying stellar populations and Galactic structure. The BeSSel project not only provides parallax and proper motions at much larger distances than Gaia can reach, b…
Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) is a strong, compact radio source believed to be powered by a super-massive black hole at the galactic center. Extinction by dust and gas in the galactic plane prevents observing it optically, but its position and proper motion have previously been estimated using radio interferometry. We present new VLBI absolute astrometry measurements of its precise position and proper motion in the frame of the third realization of the International Celestial Reference Frame, ICRF3. The observations used were made at 52 epochs on the VLBA at K-band (24 GHz) between June 2006 and Aug…
AR Scorpii (AR Sco), the only-known radio-pulsing white dwarf binary, shows unusual pulsating emission at the radio, infrared, optical and ultraviolet bands. To determine its astrometric parameters at the radio band independently, we conducted multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) phase-referencing observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz and the Chinese VLBI Network (CVN) plus the Warkworth 30-metre telescope (New Zealand) at 8.6 GHz. By using the differential VLBI astrometry, we provide high-precision astrometric measurements on the parallax ($π=8.52_{-0.07}^…
We conducted phase referencing VLBI observations of the Mira variable T~Lepus (T~Lep) using VERA, from 2003 to 2006. The distance to the source was determined from its annual parallax which was measured to be 3.06$\pm$0.04 mas, corresponding to a distance of 327$\pm$4\,pc. Our observations revealed the distribution and internal kinematics of H$_2$O masers in T~Lep, and we derived a source systemic motions of 14.60$\pm$0.50 mas yr$^{-1}$ and $-$35.43$\pm$0.79 mas yr$^{-1}$ in right ascension and declination, respectively. We also determined a LSR velocity of $V_\mathrm{LSR}^{\ast} = -$27.63 km …
We report on recent technical developments in the front- and back-ends for the four 20 m radio telescopes of the Japanese Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) project, VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA). We present a brief overview of a dual-circular polarization receiving and ultrawideband (16 Giga bit s$^{-1}$) recording systems that were installed on each of the four telescopes operating at 22 and 43 GHz bands. The wider-band capability improves the sensitivity of VLBI observations for continuum emission, and the dual-polarization capability enables the study of magnetic fields…

Astrometric Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations of maser sources in the Milky Way are used to map the spiral structure of our Galaxy and to determine fundamental parameters such as the rotation velocity ($Θ_0$) and curve and the distance to the Galactic center (R$_0$). Here, we present an update on our first results, implementing a recent change in the knowledge about the Solar motion. It seems unavoidable that the IAU recommended values for R$_0$ and $Θ_0$ need a substantial revision. In particular the combination of 8.5 kpc and 220 \kms\, can be ruled out with high confiden…
We have carried out multi-epoch VLBI observations with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) of the 22~GHz H$_{2}$O masers associated with a Class 0 protostar L1448C in the Perseus molecular cloud. The maser features trace the base of collimated bipolar jet driven by one of the infrared counter parts of L1448C named as L1448C(N) or L1448-mm A. We detected possible evidences for apparent acceleration and precession of the jet according to the three-dimensional velocity structure. Based on the phase-referencing VLBI astrometry, we have successfully detected an annual parallax of the H$_{2}…
The centrifugial acceleration of the Solar system, resulting from the gravitational attraction of the Galaxy centre, causes a phenomenon known as 'secular aberrration drift'. This acceleration of the Solar system barycentre has been ignored so far in the standard procedures for high-precision astrometry. It turns out that the current definition of the celestial reference frame as epochless and based on the assumption that quasars have no detectable proper motions, needs to be revised. In the future, a realization of the celestial reference system (realized either with VLBI, or GAIA) should cor…
Recent advances in VLBI have led to astrometric accuracy exceeding that of the Gaia mission goals. This chapter describes some important astrophysical problems that can be addressed with sub-milliarcsecond imaging and micro-arcsecond astrometry using the ngVLA with long baselines.
We conducted the astrometry of H2O masers in the Galactic star-forming region Onsala 1 (ON1) with VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA). We measured a trigonometric parallax of 0.404+/-0.017 mas, corresponding to a distance of 2.47+/-0.11 kpc. ON1 is appeared to be located near the tangent point at the Galactic longitude of 69.54 deg. We estimate the angular velocity of the Galactic rotation at Sun, the ratio of the distance from Sun to the Galactic center and the Galactic rotation velocity at Sun, to be 28.7+/-1.3 km/s/kpc using the measured distance and proper motion of ON1. This value…

We aim to reveal the structure and kinematics of the Outer-Scutum-Centaurus (OSC) arm located on the far side of the Milky Way through very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) astrometry using KaVA, which is composed of KVN (Korean VLBI Network) and VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry). We report the proper motion of a 22 GHz H$_{2}$O maser source, which is associated with the star-forming region G034.84$-$00.95, to be ($μ_α \rm{cos}δ$, $μ_δ$) = ($-$1.61$\pm$0.18, $-$4.29$\pm$0.16) mas yr$^{-1}$ in equatorial coordinates (J2000). We estimate the 2D kinematic distance to the source to be…

Astrometry at centimeter wavelengths using Very Long Baseline Interferometry is approaching accuracies of ~1 uas for the angle between a target and a calibrator source separated by <1 degree on the sky. The BeSSeL Survey and the Japanese VERA project are using this to map the spiral structure of the Milky Way by measuring trigonometric parallaxes of hundreds of maser sources associated with massive, young stars. This paper outlines how micro-arcsecond astrometry is done, including details regarding the scheduling of observations, calibration of data, and measuring positions.
We conducted multi-epoch VLBA phase reference observations of LS I +61 303 in order to study its precessing radio jet. Compared to similar observations in 2006, we find that the observed elliptical trajectory of emission at 8.4 GHz repeats after the 9-year gap. The accurate alignment of the emission patterns yields a precession period of 26.926 +- 0.005 d, which is consistent with that determined by Lomb-Scargle analysis of the radio light curve. We analytically model the projection on the sky plane of the peak position of a precessing, synchrotron-emitting jet, which traces an elliptical traj…
We present the first astrometry catalog from the Japanese VLBI (very long baseline interferometer) project VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry). We have compiled all the astrometry results from VERA, providing accurate trigonometric annual parallax and proper motion measurements. In total, 99 maser sources are listed in the VERA catalog. Among them, 21 maser sources are newly reported while the rest of 78 sources are referred to previously published results or those in preparation for forthcoming papers. The accuracy in the VERA astrometry are revisited and compared with those from the …
We present analyses to determine the fundamental parameters of the Galaxy based on VLBI astrometry of 52 Galactic maser sources obtained with VERA, VLBA and EVN. We model the Galaxy's structure with a set of parameters including the Galaxy center distance R_0, the angular rotation velocity at the LSR Omega_0, mean peculiar motion of the sources with respect to Galactic rotation (U_src, V_src, W_src), rotation-curve shape index, and the V component of the Solar peculiar motions V_sun. Based on a Markov chain Monte Carlo method, we find that the Galaxy center distance is constrained at a 5% leve…
This chapter summarizes radio astrometry in relation to current very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) projects and describes its perspectives with the SKA. The scientific goals of the astrometry with the SKA have been discussed in the international and Japanese communities of researchers, whose major issues are shown here. We have demonstrated some of the issues, such as censuses of possible targets and the technical feasibility of astrometry in the SKA frequency bands. The preliminary results of our case studies on SKA astrometry are also presented. In addition, possible synergy and commen…
We report the trigonometric parallax of IRAS 07427-2400 with VERA to be 0.185 $\pm$ 0.027 mas, corresponding to a distance of 5.41$^{+0.92}_{-0.69}$ kpc. The result is consistent with the previous result of 5.32$^{+0.49}_{-0.42}$ kpc obtained by Choi et al. (2014) within error. To remove the effect of internal maser motions (e.g., random motions), we observed six maser features associated with IRAS 07427-2400 and determined systematic proper motions of the source by averaging proper motions of the six maser features. The obtained proper motions are ($μ_α$cos$δ$, $μ_δ$) = ($-$1.79 $\pm$ 0.32, 2…
We performed the astrometry of H2O masers in the Galactic star-forming region G48.61+0.02 with the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA). We derived a trigonometric parallax of 199+/-7 micro as, which corresponds to a distance of 5.03+/-0.19 kpc. The distance to G48.61+0.02 is about a half of its far kinematic distance, which was often assumed previously. This distance places G48.61+0.02 in the Sagittarius-Carina arm and near the active star forming region and the supernova remnant W51. We also obtained the three dimensional motion of G48.61+0.02, and found that it has a large peculiar m…
Pulsar positions can be measured with high precision using both pulsar timing methods and very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI). Pulsar timing positions are referenced to a solar-system ephemeris, whereas VLBI positions are referenced to distant quasars. Here we compare pulsar positions from published VLBI measurements with those obtained from pulsar timing data from the Nanshan and Parkes radio telescopes in order to relate the two reference frames. We find that the timing positions differ significantly from the VLBI positions (and also differ between different ephemerides). A statisticall…
Aims:We take advantage of the second data release of the Gaia space mission and the state-of-the-art astrometry delivered from very long baseline interferometry observations to revisit the structure and kinematics of the nearby Taurus star-forming region. Methods: We apply a hierarchical clustering algorithm for partitioning the stars in our sample into groups (i.e., clusters) that are associated with the various molecular clouds of the complex, and derive the distance and spatial velocity of individual stars and their corresponding molecular clouds. Results: We show that the molecular clouds …
We have performed the astrometry of H2O masers in the Galactic star-forming region Onsala 2 North (ON2N) with the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry. We obtained the trigonometric parallax of 0.261+/-0.009 mas, corresponding to the heliocentric distance of 3.83+/-0.13 kpc. ON2N is expected to be on the solar circle, because its radial velocity with respect to the Local Standard of Rest (LSR) is nearly zero. Using present parallax and proper motions of the masers, the Galactocentric distance of the Sun and the Galactic rotation velocity at the Sun are found to be R_0 = 7.80+/-0.26 kpc and Thet…
As part our investigation into the Galactic rotation curve, we carried out Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations towards the star-forming region IRAS 01123+6430 using VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) to measure its annual parallax and proper motion. The annual parallax was measured to be 0.151+/-0.042 mas, which corresponds to a distance of D=6.61^{+2.55}_{-1.44} kpc, and the obtained proper motion components were (μ_αcosδ, μ_δ)=(-1.44+/-0.15, -0.27+/-0.16) mas yr^{-1} in equatorial coordinates. Assuming Galactic constants of (R_0, Θ_0)=(8.05+/-0.45 kpc, 238+/-14 km …
Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at radio wavelengths can provide astrometry accurate to 10 micro-arcseconds or better (i.e. better than the target GAIA accuracy) without being limited by dust obscuration. This means that unlike GAIA, VLBI can be applied to star-forming regions independently of their internal and line-of-sight extinction. Low-mass young stellar objects (particularly T Tauri stars) are often non-thermal compact radio emitters, ideal for astrometric VLBI radio continuum experiments. Existing observations for nearby regions (e.g. Taurus, Ophiuchus, or Orion) demonstrate t…
The paper presents the results of the largest to date VLBI absolute astrometry campaign of observations of 13,645 radio sources with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). Of them, 7220 have been detected, including 6755 target sources that have never been observed with VLBI before. This makes the present VLBI catalogue the largest ever published. Positions of the target sources have been determined with the median uncertainty 1.7 mas, and 15,599 images of 7179 sources have been generated. Unlike to previous absolute radio astrometry campaigns, observations were made at 4.3 and 7.6 GHz simultane…
We report VLBA observations of 22 GHz H$_{2}$O and 43 GHz SiO masers toward the Mira variable RR Aql. By fitting the SiO maser emission to a circular ring, we estimate the absolute stellar position of RR Aql and find agreement with Gaia astrometry to within the joint uncertainty of $\approx1$ mas. Using the maser astrometry we measure a stellar parallax of 2.44 $\pm$ 0.07 mas, corresponding to a distance of 410$^{+12}_{-11}$ pc. The maser parallax deviates significantly from the Gaia EDR3 parallax of 1.95 $\pm$ 0.11 mas, indicating a $3.8σ$ tension between radio and optical measurements. This …

We report the results of VLBI observations of H$_{2}$O masers in the IRAS 20143+3634 star forming region using VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astronomy). By tracking masers for a period of over two years we measured a trigonometric parallax of $π= 0.367 \pm 0.037$ mas, corresponding to a source distance of $D = 2.72 ^{+0.31}_{-0.25}$ kpc and placing it in the Local spiral arm. Our trigonometric distance is just 60% of the previous estimation based on radial velocity, significantly impacting the astrophysics of the source. We measured proper motions of $-2.99 \pm 0.16$ mas yr$^{-1}$ and $-4.37…
Surveys have shown that up to one tenth of all ultracool dwarfs (UCDs) are appreciable radio emitters, with their emission attributed to a combination of gyrosynchrotron radiation and the electron cyclotron maser instability (ECMI). 2M J0746+2000AB is a close stellar binary comprised of an L0 and L1.5 dwarf that was previously identified as a source of 5 GHz radio emission. We used very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) to precisely track the radio emission over seven epochs in 2010-2017, and found both components to be radio emitters -- the first such system identified -- with the secondary…
We report on annual parallax and proper motion observations of H2O masers in S235AB-MIR, which is a massive young stellar object in the Perseus Arm. Using multi-epoch VLBI astrometry we measured a parallax of pi = 0.63 +- 0.03 mas, corresponding to a trigonometric distance of D = 1.56+-0.09 kpc, and source proper motion of ( u alpha cos d , u d) = (0.79 +- 0.12, -2.41 +- 0.14) mas/yr. Water masers trace a jet of diameter 15 au which exhibits a definite radial velocity gradient perpendicular to its axis. 3D maser kinematics were well modelled by a rotating cylinder with physical parameters: v_o…
