As a partial generalisation of the Uhlhorn theorem to Hilbert $C^*$-modules, we show in this article that the module structure and the orthogonality structure of a Hilbert $C^*$-module determine its Hilbert $C^*$-module structure. In fact, we have a more general result as follows. Let $A$ be a $C^*$-algebra, $E$ and $F$ be Hilbert $A$-modules, and $I_E$ be the ideal of $A$ generated by $\{\langle x,y\rangle_A: x,y\in E\}$. If $Φ: E\to F$ is an $A$-module map, not assumed to be bounded but satisfying $$ \langle Φ(x),Φ(y)\rangle_A\ =\ 0\quad\text{whenever}\quad\langle x,y\rangle_A\ =\ 0, $$ then there exists a unique central positive multiplier $u\in M(I_E)$ such that $$ \langle Φ(x), Φ(y)\rangle_A\ =\ u \langle x, y\rangle_A\qquad (x,y\in E). $$ As a consequence, $Φ$ is automatically bounded, the induced map $Φ_0: E\to \overline{Φ(E)}$ is adjointable, and $\overline{Eu^{1/2}}$ is isomorphic to $\overline{Φ(E)}$ as Hilbert $A$-modules. If, in addition, $Φ$ is bijective, then $E$ is isomorphic to $F$.
Applying a result of abstract ring theory we get that bijective additive mappings on standard algebras of unbounded operators preserving zero products are multiples of ring isomorphisms. The structure of additive bijective mappings on certain classes of standard algebras of unbounded operators preserving orthogonality in both directions is also investigated. The results are quite similar to those for algebras of bounded operators
In a first objective we improve our understanding about surjective and bijective bounded linear operators preserving orthogonality from a JB$^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ into a JB$^*$-triple $E$. Among many other conclusions, it is shown that a bounded linear bijection $T: \mathcal{A}\to E$ is orthogonality preserving if, and only if, it is biorthogonality preserving if, and only if, it preserves zero-triple-products in both directions (i.e., $\{a,b,c\}=0 \Leftrightarrow \{T(a),T(b),T(c)\}=0$). In the second main result we establish a complete characterization of all one-parameter groups of ortho…
In 2014, we determine the precise form of a continuous orthogonal form on a commutative real C$^*$-algebra. We also describe the general form of a (not-necessarily continuous) orthogonality preserving linear map between commutative unital real C$^*$-algebras. Among the consequences, we show that every orthogonality preserving linear bijection between commutative unital real C$^*$-algebras is continuous. In this note we revisit these results and their proofs with the idea of filling a gap in the arguments, and to extend the original conclusions.
Let $A$ be a $C^*$-algebra. Let $E$ and $F$ be Hilbert $A$-modules with $E$ being full. Suppose that $θ: E\to F$ is a linear map preserving orthogonality, i.e., $<θ(x), θ(y) > = 0$ whenever $<x, y > = 0$. We show in this article that if, in addition, $A$ has real rank zero, and $θ$ is an $A$-module map (not assumed to be bounded), then there exists a central positive multiplier $u\in M(A)$ such that $<θ(x), θ(y) > = u < x, y>$ ($x,y\in E$). In the case when $A$ is a standard $C^*$-algebra, or when $A$ is a $W^*$-algebra containing no finite type II direct summand, we also obtain the same concl…
We initiate the study of orthogonal forms on a real C$^*$-algebra. Motivated by previous contributions, due to Ylinen, Jajte, Paszkiewicz and Goldstein, we prove that for every continuous orthogonal form $V$ on a commutative real C$^*$-algebra, $A$, there exist functionals $φ_1$ and $φ_2$ in $A^{*}$ satisfying $$V(x,y) = φ_1 (x y) + φ_2 (x y^*),$$ for every $x,y$ in $A$. We describe the general form of a (not-necessarily continuous) orthogonality preserving linear map between unital commutative real C$^*$-algebras. As a consequence, we show that every orthogonality preserving linear bijection …
Due to the corresponding fact concerning Hilbert spaces, it is natural to ask if the linearity and the orthogonality structure of a Hilbert $C^*$-module determine its $C^*$-algebra-valued inner product. We verify this in the case when the $C^*$-algebra is commutative (or equivalently, we consider a Hilbert bundle over a locally compact Hausdorff space). More precisely, a $\mathbb{C}$-linear map $θ$ (not assumed to be bounded) between two Hilbert $C^*$-modules is said to be "orthogonality preserving" if $\left<θ(x),θ(y)\right> =0$ whenever $\left<x,y\right> =0$. We prove that if $θ$ is an ortho…
We establish a more precise description of those surjective or bijective continuous linear operators preserving orthogonality between C$^*$-algebras. The new description is applied to determine all uniformly continuous one-parameter semigroups of orthogonality preserving operators on an arbitrary C$^*$-algebra. We prove that given a family $\{T_t: t\in \mathbb{R}_0^{+}\}$ of orthogonality preserving bounded linear bijections on a general C$^*$-algebra $A$ with $T_0=Id$, if for each $t\geq 0,$ we set $h_t = T_t^{**} (1)$ and we write $r_t$ for the range partial isometry of $h_t$ in $A^{**},$ an…
In this paper we study a new class of transformations on the set of all Hilbert space effects. This consists of the bijective maps which preserve the order and zero product in both directions. The main result of the paper gives a complete description of the structure of those transformations. As applications we obtain additional new results and some former ones as easy corollaries. In particular, we obtain the form of the ortho-order automorphisms as well as that of the sequential automorphisms. In the last paragraph of the paper we show that these two kinds of automorphisms belong to our clas…
In this paper we present results concerning orthogonality in Hilbert $C^*$-modules. Moreover, for a $C^*$-algebra $\mathscr{A}$, we prove theorems concerning the multi-$\mathscr{A}$-linearity and its preservation by $\mathscr{A}$-linear operators. New version of solution of the orthogonality equation on Hilbert $C^*$-modules and mappings preserving orthogonality are also investigated.
In the first part of the paper, we use states on $C^*$-algebras in order to establish some equivalent statements to equality in the triangle inequality, as well as to the parallelogram identity for elements of a pre-Hilbert $C^*$-module. We also characterize the equality case in the triangle inequality for adjointable operators on a Hilbert $C^*$-module. Then we give certain necessary and sufficient conditions to the Pythagoras identity for two vectors in a pre-Hilbert $C^*$-module under the assumption that their inner product has negative real part. We introduce the concept of Pythagoras orth…
We introduce a notion of approximate orthogonality preserving mappings between Hilbert $C^*$-modules. We define the concept of $(δ, \varepsilon)$-orthogonality preserving mapping and give some sufficient conditions for a linear mapping to be $(δ, \varepsilon)$-orthogonality preserving. In particular, if $\mathscr{E}$ is a full Hilbert $\mathscr{A}$-module with $\mathbb{K}(\mathscr{H})\subseteq \mathscr{A} \subseteq \mathbb{B}(\mathscr{H})$ and $T, S:\mathscr{E}\longrightarrow \mathscr{E}$ are two linear mappings satisfying $\big|\langle Sx, Sy\rangle\big| = \|S\|^2\,|\langle x, y\rangle|$ for …
Let $M$ and $N$ be arbitrary von Neumann algebras. For any $a$ in $M$ or in $N$, let $Δ_λ(a)$ denote the $λ$-Aluthge transform of $a$. Suppose that $M$ has no abelian direct summand. We prove that every bijective map $Φ:M\to N$ satisfying $$Φ(Δ_λ(a\circ b^*))=Δ_λ(Φ(a) \circ Φ(b)^*), \hbox{ for all } a,\;b\in M,$$ (for a fixed $λ\in [0,1]$), maps the hermitian part of $M$ onto the hermitian part of $N$ (i.e. $Φ(M_{sa}) = N_{sa}$) and its restriction $Φ|_{M_{sa}} : M_{sa}\to N_{sa}$ is a Jordan isomorphism. If we also assume that $Φ(x +i y ) = Φ(x) +Φ(i y)$ for all $x,y\in M_{sa}$, then there ex…
Let $\big(\mathscr{X}, \langle\cdot, \cdot\rangle\big)$ be a Hilbert $C^*$-module over a $C^*$-algebra $\mathscr{A}$ and let $\mathcal{S}(\mathscr{A})$ be the set of states on $\mathscr{A}$. In this paper, we first compute the norm derivative for elements $x$ and $y$ of $\mathscr{X}$ as follows \begin{align*} ρ_{_{+}}(x, y) = \max\Big\{\mbox{Re}\,φ(\langle x, y\rangle): \, φ\in \mathcal{S}(\mathscr{A}), φ(\langle x, x\rangle) = \|x\|^2\Big\}. \end{align*} We then apply it to characterize different concepts of orthogonality in $\mathscr{X}$. In particular, we present a simpler proof of the clas…
For a unital $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$ and a subspace $\mathcal B$ of $\mathcal A$, a characterization for a best approximation to an element of $\mathcal A$ in $\mathcal B$ is obtained. As an application, a formula for the distance of an element of $\mathcal A$ from $\mathcal B$ has been obtained, when a best approximation of that element to $\mathcal B$ exists. Further, a characterization for Birkhoff-James orthogonality of an element of a Hilbert $C^*$-module to a subspace is obtained.
A mapping $f: {\mathcal M} \to {\mathcal N}$ between Hilbert $C^*$-modules approximately preserves the inner product if \[\|< f(x), f(y)> - < x, y> \| \leq ϕ(x, y),\] for an appropriate control function $ϕ(x,y)$ and all $x, y \in {\mathcal M}$. In this paper, we extend some results concerning the stability of the orthogonality equation to the framework of Hilbert $C^*$-modules on more general restricted domains. In particular, we investigate some asymptotic behavior and the Hyers--Ulam--Rassias stability of the orthogonality equation.
Utilizing the Birkhoff--James orthogonality, we present some characterizations of the norm-parallelism for elements of $\mathbb{B}(\mathscr{H})$ defined on a finite dimensional Hilbert space, elements of a Hilbert $C^*$-module over the $C^*$-algebra of compact operators and elements of an arbitrary $C^*$-algebra. We also consider the characterization of norm parallelism problem for operators on a finite dimensional Hilbert space when the operator norm is replaced by the Schatten $p$-norm. Some applications and generalizations are discussed for certain elements of a Hilbert $C^*$-module.
The study of operator algebras on Hilbert spaces, and C*-algebras in particular, is one of the most active areas within Functional Analysis. A natural generalization of these is to replace Hilbert spaces (which are $L^2$-spaces) with $L^p$-spaces, for $p\in [1,\infty)$. The study of such algebras of operators is notoriously more challenging, due to the lack of orthogonality in $L^p$-spaces. We give a modern overview of a research area whose beginnings can be traced back to the 50's, and that has seen renewed attention in the last decade through the infusion of new techniques. The combination o…
We define notions of semi-saturatedness and orthogonality for a Fell bundle over a quasi-lattice ordered group. We show that a compactly aligned product system of Hilbert bimodules can be naturally extended to a semi-saturated and orthogonal Fell bundle whenever it is simplifiable. Conversely, a semi-saturated and orthogonal Fell bundle is completely determined by the positive fibres and its cross sectional $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra is isomorphic to a relative Cuntz--Pimsner algebra of a simplifiable product system of Hilbert bimodules. We show that this correspondence is part of an equivalence b…
