We study the Casimir effect due to a massive vector field in a system of two parallel plates made of real materials, in an arbitrary magnetodielectric background. The plane waves satisfying the Proca equations are classified into transverse modes and longitudinal modes which have different dispersion relations. Transverse modes are further divided into type I and type II corresponding to TE and TM modes in the massless case. For general magnetodielectric media, we argue that the correct boundary conditions are the continuities of $\mathbf{H}_{\parallel}, ϕ, \mathbf{A}$ and $\pa_xA_x$, where $x$ is the direction normal to the plates. Whereas there are type I transverse modes that satisfy all the boundary conditions, it is impossible to find type II transverse modes or longitudinal modes that satisfy all the boundary conditions. To circumvent this problem, type II transverse modes and longitudinal modes have to be considered together. We call the contribution to the Casimir energy from type I transverse modes as TE contribution, and the contribution from the superposition of type II transverse modes and longitudinal modes as TM contribution. Their massless limits give respectively the TE and TM contributions to the Casimir energy of a massless vector field. The limit where the plates become perfectly conducting is discussed in detail. For the special case where the background has unity refractive index, it is shown that the TM contribution to the Casimir energy can be written as a sum of contributions from two different types of modes, corresponding to type 2 discrete modes and type 3 continuum modes discussed by Barton and Dombey \cite{1}. For general background, this splitting does not work. The limit where both plates become infinitely permeable and the limit where one plate becomes perfectly conducting and one plate becomes infinitely permeable are also investigated.
We consider the Casimir effect of a massive vector field between two semi-infinite dielectric slabs. We first derive the generalization of the Lifshitz formula that gives the Casimir interaction energy of two magnetodielectric slabs separated by a magnetodielectric medium due to the vacuum fluctuations of a massive vector field. We then discuss the asymptotic behaviors of the Casimir energy and the Casimir force in various limits, such as low temperature, high temperature, small mass, large mass, up to the first order in the finite conductivity correction, for two real metal semispaces whose d…
We introduce a general, simple and effective method of evaluating the zero point energy of a quantum field under the influence of arbitrary boundary conditions imposed on the field on flat surfaces perpendicular to a chosen spatial direction. As an example we apply the method to the Casimir effect associated with a massive fermion field on which MIT bag model type of boundary conditions are imposed.
The Casimir interaction energy due to the vacuum fluctuations of a massive vector field between two perfectly conducting concentric spherical bodies is computed. The TE contribution to the Casimir interaction energy is a direct generalization of the massless case but the TM contribution is much more complicated. Each TM mode is a linear combination of a transverse mode which is the generalization of a TM mode in the massless case and a longitudinal mode that does not appear in the massless case. In contrast to the case of two parallel perfectly conducting plates, the are no TM discrete modes t…
The energy momentum tensor is used to introduce the Casimir force of the massive scalar field acting on a nonpenetrating surface. This expression can be used to evaluate the vacuum force by employing the appropriate field operators. To simplify our formalism we also relates the vacuum force expression to the imaginary part of the Green function via the fluctuation dissipation theorem and Kubo formula. This allows one to evaluate the vacuum force without resorting to the process of field quantization. These two approaches are used to calculate the attractive force between two nonpenetrating pla…
Since massive scalar field plays an important role in theoretical physics, we consider the interaction between a sphere and a plate due to the vacuum fluctuation of a massive scalar field. We consider combinations of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. There is a simple prescription to obtain the functional formulas for the Casimir interaction energies, known as TGTG formula, for the massive interactions from the massless interactions. From the TGTG formulas, we discuss how to compute the small separation asymptotic expansions of the Casimir interaction energies up to the next-to-leadin…
The Casimir effect for a massless scalar field on the helix boundary condition which is named as quantum spring is studied in our recent paper\cite{Feng}. In this paper, the Casimir effect of the quantum spring is investigated in $(D+1)$-dimensional spacetime for the massless and massive scalar fields by using the zeta function techniques. We obtain the exact results of the Casimir energy and Casimir force for any $D$, which indicate a $Z_2$ symmetry of the two space dimensions. The Casimir energy and Casimir force have different expressions for odd and even dimensional space in the massless c…
In this paper, we consider the fermionic Casimir effect under a new type of space-time topology using the concept of quotient topology. The relation between the new topology and that in Ref. \cite{Feng,Zhai3} is something like that between a Möbius strip and a cylindric. We obtain the exact results of the Casimir energy and force for the massless and massive Dirac fields in the ($D+1$)-dimensional space-time. For both massless and massive cases, there is a $Z_2$ symmetry for the Casimir energy. To see the effect of the mass, we compare the result with that of the massless one and we found that…
We study the system of a massive fermion field confined between two parallel plates, where the properties of both plates are discussed under chiral MIT boundary conditions. We investigate the effects of the chiral angle on the Casimir energy for a massive fermion field with the general momentum. We find that the Casimir energy as a function of the chiral angle is generally symmetric, and the attractive Casimir force in the chiral case is stronger than that in the nonchiral case. In addition, we investigate the approximate Casimir energy for light and heavy mass cases. The behavior of the discr…
Casimir forces of massive fermionic Dirac fields are calculated for parallel plates geometry in spatial space with dimension d and imposing bag model boundary conditions. It is shown that in the range of ma>>1 where m is mass of fields quanta and a is the separation distance of the plates,it is equal to massive bosonic fields Casimir force for each degree of freedom. We argue this equality exists for any massive anyonic field in two-dimensional spatial space. Also the ratio of massless fermionic field Casimir force to its bosonic correspondent in d-dimentional spatial space is $(1-1/2^d)$.
Based on a perturbative approach, a series expansion in susceptibility function of the medium is obtained for the Casimir force between arbitrary shaped objects immersed in a scalar or vector fluctuating field in arbitrary dimensions. Finite-temperature corrections are derived and the results are compared in first order with weak coupling regime in scattering method. The generalization to a massive vector field is also investigated.
Charged massive matter fields of spin 0 and 1/2 are quantized in the presence of an external uniform magnetic field in a spatial region bounded by two parallel plates. The most general set of boundary conditions at the plates, that is required by mathematical consistency and the self-adjointness of the Hamiltonian operator, is employed. The vacuum fluctuations of the matter field in the case of the magnetic field orthogonal to the plates are analyzed, and it is shown that the pressure from the vacuum onto the plates is positive and independent of the boundary condition, as well as of the dista…
We study, for the first time, the Casimir effect in non-Abelian gauge theory using first-principle numerical simulations. Working in two spatial dimensions at zero temperature we find that closely spaced perfect chromoelectric conductors attract each other with a small anomalous scaling dimension. At large separation between the conductors, the attraction is exponentially suppressed by a new massive quantity, the Casimir mass, which is surprisingly different from the lowest glueball mass. The apparent emergence of the new massive scale may be a result of the backreaction of the vacuum to the p…
A novel formalism for the evaluation of the Casimir-Polder potential in an arbitrary gauge of vector potentials is introduced. The ground state energy of a neutral atom in the presence of an infinite two-dimensional plane with Chern-Simons interaction is derived at zero temperature. The essential feature of the result is its dependence on the antisymmetric part of a dipole moment correlation function.
We evaluate dissipative effects for a system consisting of a massive Dirac field confined between two walls, one of them oscillating, in 1+1 dimensions. In the model that we consider, a dimensionless parameter characterizing each wall is tuned so that bag-boundary conditions are attained for a particular value. We present explicit results for the probability of creating a fermion pair out of the vacuum, and relate the total vacuum decay probability to the imaginary part of the effective action.
A role of the renormalization group invariance in calculations of the ground state energy for models with confined fermion fields is discussed. The case of the (1+1)D MIT bag with massive fermions is studied in detail.
This paper gives a brief review on the recent work on fractional Klein-Gordon fields, in particular on the Casimir effect associated to fractional Klein-Gordon fields in various geometries and boundary conditions. New results on Casimir piston due to a fractional Klein-Gordon massive field are given.
Reflection of electromagnetic waves from a periodic grating can be described in terms of a discrete coupled multichannel scattering problem. By modeling the grating as a space- and frequency-dependent dielectric, it is possible to use a variable phase method, applied to a generalized Helmholtz equation incorporating both transverse and longitudinal modes, to efficiently compute the scattering $S$-matrix. The projection onto transverse modes of this result, evaluated for imaginary wave vector, provides the information necessary for a Casimir energy calculation. This approach is of particular in…
This paper has been withdrawn because a much better version, G. Gazzola, M. C. Nemes and W. F. Wreszinski - On the Casimir Energy for a massive quantum scalar field and the cosmological constant- Annals of Physics (N.Y.) vol. 324, 2095-2107 (2009) has appeared, which corrects several conceptual errors in the present one.
We investigate quantum vacuum effects for a massive scalar field, induced by two planar boundaries in background of a linearly expanding spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime for an arbitrary number of spatial dimensions. For the Robin boundary conditions and for general curvature coupling parameter, a complete set of mode functions is presented and the related Hadamard function is evaluated. The results are specified for the most important special cases of the adiabatic and conformal vacuum states. The vacuum expectation values of the field squared and of the energy-momentum ten…
We discuss Stueckelberg massive electromagnetism on an arbitrary four-dimensional curved spacetime (gauge invariance of the classical theory and covariant quantization, wave equations for the massive spin-1 field $A_μ$, for the auxiliary Stueckelberg scalar field $Φ$ and for the ghost fields $C$ and $C^\ast$, Ward identities, Hadamard representation of the various Feynman propagators and covariant Taylor series expansions of the corresponding coefficients). This permits us to construct, for a Hadamard quantum state, the expectation value of the renormalized stress-energy tensor associated with…
In a recent paper [1] the Casimir energy was calculated for a massive dirac field in (1+1) dimensional space-time in the presence of an inverse square well potential and shown to be positive. It will be shown that this result violates a key assumption of quantum field theory which is that the vacuum state is the state of minimum energy. The reason for this discrepancy is examined and is shown to be related to the way the charge density operator is defined. If the charge density operator is defined using point splitting then an extra term will be added to the charge which will result in the Cas…
In this study, we consider motion of the massive and charged Bose gas trapped in electric and magnetic fields between two parallel plates in the $x-y$ plane that are separated by a distance $d$ in the $z$ direction. We derive analytical expression of the grand canonical potential of the quantum particles by using of Ketterle and van Druten approximation. By evaluating canonical potential, we obtain Casimir potential and force at the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature $T_{c}$. We also show that Casimir force oscillates depends on distance $d$ for fixed parameters.
We study massive charged particle production from the vacuum confined between two vibrating plates in the presence of a strong electric field. We analytically derive a formula for the production number based on the perturbation theory in the Furry picture, and show that the Schwinger mechanism by the strong electric field and the dynamical Casimir effect by the vibration assist with each other to dramatically enhance the production number by orders of the magnitude.
We consider the Casimir effect between two parallel plates localized on a brane. In order to properly compute the contribution to the Casimir energy due to any higher dimensional field, it is necessary to take into account the localization properties of the KK modes. When no massless mode appears in the spectrum, the correction to the Casimir energy is exponentially suppressed. When a massless mode is present in the spectrum, the correction to the Casimir energy can be, in principle, sizeable. Here we illustrate a new method to compute the correction to the Casimir energy between two parallel …
We evaluate the Casimir energy and force for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter, subject to Robin boundary conditions on two codimension-one parallel plates, located on a $(D+1)$-dimensional background spacetime with an arbitrary internal space. The most general case of different Robin coefficients on the two separate plates is considered. With independence of the geometry of the internal space, the Casimir forces are seen to be attractive for special cases of Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions on both plates and repulsive for Dirichlet boundary conditions o…
For a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling we evaluate the Wightman function in the geometry of two parallel branes perpendicular to the AdS boundary. On the separate branes, the field operator is constrained by Robin boundary conditions, in general, with different coefficients. In the region between the branes their contribution to the Wightman function is explicitly separated. By using this decomposition, the brane-induced effects on the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) for the field squared and energy-momentum tensor are investigated. The behavior of those expectation values…
The vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor and the Casimir forces are investigated for a massive scalar field with an arbitrary curvature coupling parameter in the geometry of two parallel plates, on the background of de Sitter spacetime. The field is prepared in the Bunch--Davies vacuum state and is constrained to satisfy Robin boundary conditions on the plates. The vacuum energy-momentum tensor is non-diagonal, with the off-diagonal component corresponding to the energy flux along the direction normal to the plates. It is shown that the curvature of the background spacetime d…
A perfectly reflecting (Dirichlet) boundary condition at the edge of an impenetrable magnetic-flux-carrying tube of nonzero transverse size is imposed on the charged massive scalar matter field which is quantized outside the tube. We show that the vacuum polarization effects outside the tube give rise to a macroscopic force acting at the increase of the tube radius (if the magnetic flux is held steady). The Casimir energy and force are periodic in the value of the magnetic flux, being independent of the coupling to the space-time curvature scalar. We conclude that a topological defect of the v…
We study the zero point energy of massless scalar and vector fields subject to spheroidal boundary conditions. For massless scalar fields and small ellipticity the zero-point energy can be found using both zeta function and Green's function methods. The result agrees with the conjecture that the zero point energy for a boundary remains constant under small deformations of the boundary that preserve volume (the boundary deformation conjecture), formulated in the case of an elliptic-cylindrical boundary. In the case of massless vector fields, an exact solution is not possible. We show that a zon…
We review a simple technique for evaluating the vacuum energy stemming from non-trivial boundary conditions and review results for the Casimir energy of a massive fermionic field confined in a d+1-dimensional slab-bag and the effect of a uniform magnetic field on the vacuum energy of confined massive bosonic and fermionic fields. New results concerning the Casimir energy and the evaluation of the rate of creation of quanta in kappa-deformed theories are presented.
We study the influence of a background uniform magnetic field and boundary conditions on the vacuum of a quantized charged massive scalar matter field confined between two parallel plates; the magnetic field is directed orthogonally to the plates. The admissible set of boundary conditions at the plates is determined by the requirements that the operator of one-particle energy squared be self-adjoint and positive definite. We show that, in the case of a weak magnetic field and a small separation of the plates, the Casimir force is either attractive or repulsive, depending on the choice of a bou…
We present a worldline method for the calculation of Casimir energies for scalar fields coupled to magnetodielectric media. The scalar model we consider may be applied in arbitrary geometries, and it corresponds exactly to one polarization of the electromagnetic field in planar layered media. Starting from the field theory for electromagnetism, we work with the two decoupled polarizations in planar media and develop worldline path integrals, which represent the two polarizations separately, for computing both Casimir and Casimir-Polder potentials. We then show analytically that the path integr…
With the intent of exploring how the interplay between boundary effects and chiral symmetry breaking may alter the thermodynamical behavior of a system of strongly interacting fermions, we study the Casimir effect for the setup of two parallel layers using a four-fermion effective field theory at zero density. This system reveals a number of interesting features. While for infinitely large separation (no boundaries), chiral symmetry is broken or restored via a second order phase transition, in the opposite case of small (and, in general, finite) separation the transition becomes first order, r…
