The collision of two particles in the background of a Sen black hole is studied. With the equations of motion of the particles, the center-of-mass energy is investigated when the collision takes place at the horizon of a Sen black hole. For an extremal Sen black hole, we find that the center-of-mass energy will be arbitrarily high with two conditions: (1) spin $a\neq 0$ and (2) one of the colliding particles has the critical angular momentum $l_{\text{c}}=2$. For a nonextremal Sen black hole, we show that, in order to obtain an unlimited center-of-mass energy, one of the colliding particles should have the critical angular momentum $l'_{\text{c}}=2 r_{+}/a$ ($r_{+}$ is the radius of the outer horizon for a nonextremal black hole). However, a particle with the angular momentum $l=l'_{\text{c}}$ could not approach the black hole from outside of the horizon through free fall, which implies that the collision with arbitrarily high center-of-mass energy could not take place. Thus, there is an upper bound of the center-of-mass energy for the nonextremal black hole. We also obtain the maximal center-of-mass energy for a near-extremal black hole and the result implies that the Planck-scale energy is hard to be approached. Furthermore, we also consider the back-reaction effects. The result shows that, neglecting the gravitational radiation, it has a weak effect on the center-of-mass energy. However, we argue that the maximum allowed center-of-mass energy will be greatly reduced to below the Planck-scale when the gravitational radiation is included.
This paper is devoted to the analysis of (m,n)-string in stringy Newton-Cartan background. We start with the Hamiltonian constraint for (m,n)-string in general background and perform limiting procedure on metric and NSNS and Ramond-Ramond two form background that leads to stringy Newton-Cartan gravity. We also analyze conditions that these background fields have to obey in order to define consistent world-sheet (m,n)-theory. We also discuss D1-brane with dynamical electric field in stringy Newton-Cartan gravity.
We interpret the lack of large-angle temperature correlations and the apparent even-odd parity imbalance, observed in the cosmic microwave background by COBE, WMAP and Planck satellite missions, as a possible stringy signal ultimately stemming from a composite inflaton field (e.g. a fermionic condensate). Based on causality arguments and a Fourier analysis of the angular two-point correlation function, two infrared cutoffs $k_{\rm min}^{\rm even, odd}$ are introduced in the CMB power spectrum associated, respectively, with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions of the fermionic constitue…
We consider the two-dimensional "Schwarzschild" and "Reissner-Nordstrom" stringy black holes as systems of Casimir type. We explicitly calculate the energy-momentum tensor of a massless scalar field satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions on two one-dimensional "walls". These results are obtained using the Wald's axioms. Thermodynamical quantities such as pressure, specific heat, isothermal compressibility and entropy of the two-dimensional stringy black holes are calculated. A comparison is made between the obtained results and the laws of thermodynamics. The results obtained for the extrema…
We utilize Moller's and Einstein's energy-momentum complexes in order to explicitly evaluate the energy distributions associated with the two-dimensional "Schwarzschild" and "Reissner-Nordstrom" black hole backgrounds. While Moller's prescription provides meaningful physical results, Einstein's prescription fails to do so in the aforementioned gravitational backgrounds. These results hold for all two-dimensional static black hole geometries. The results obtained within this context are exploited in order Seifert's hypothesis to be investigated.
We discuss modifications of the thermal Dark Matter (DM) relic abundances in stringy cosmologies with D-particle space-time foamy backgrounds. As a result of back-reaction of massive DM on the background space-time, owing to its interaction with D-particle defects in the foam, quantum fluctuations are induced in the space-time metric. We demonstrate that these lead to the presence of extra source terms in the Boltzmann equation used to determine the thermal dark matter relic abundances. The source terms are determined by the specific form of the induced metric deformations; the latter depend o…
Superstring/M-theory compactified on compact Ricci flat manifolds have recently been conjectured to exhibit instabilities whenever the metrics do not have special holonomy. We use worldsheet conformal field theory to investigate instabilities of Type II superstring theories on compact, Ricci flat, spin 3-manifolds including a worldsheet description of their spin structures. The instabilities are signalled by the appearance of stringy tachyons at small radius and a negative (1-loop) vacuum energy density at large radius. We briefly discuss the extension to higher dimensions.
We consider one of the simplest time-dependent backgrounds in M-theory, describing the shrinking away of the M-theory dimension with the other spatial dimensions static. As the M-theory dimension becomes small, the situation becomes well-described by string theory in a singular cosmological background where the string coupling tends to zero but the $α'$-corrections become large, near the cosmic singularity. We compute these $α'$-corrections, both for the background and for linearized perturbations, in heterotic string theory, and show they may be reproduced by a map from eleven-dimensional M-t…
We propose a variation of spacetime noncommutative field theory to realize the stringy spacetime uncertainty relation without breaking any of the global symmetries of the homogeneous isotropic universe. We study the spectrum of metric perturbations in this model for a wide class of accelerating background cosmologies. Spacetime noncommutativity leads to a coupling between the fluctuation modes and the background cosmology which is nonlocal in time. For each mode, there is a critical time at which the spacetime uncertainty relation is saturated. This is the time when the mode is generated. Thes…
Based on the holographic conjecture for superstrings on Dp-brane backgrounds and the dual (p+1)-dimensional gauge theory ($0\le p\le 4$) given in hep-th/0308024 and hep-th/0405203, we continue the study of superstring amplitudes including string higher modes ($n\ne 0$). We give a prediction to the two-point functions of operators with large R-charge J. The effect of stringy modes do not appear as the form of anomalous dimensions except for p=3. Instead, it gives non-trivial correction to the two-point functions for supergravity modes. For p=4, the scalar two-point functions for any n behave li…
We consider a universe with a non-classical stringy topology that has fixed points. We concentrate on the simplest example, an orbifold point, and study its observable imprints on the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We show that an orbifold preserves the Gaussian nature of the temperature fluctuations, yet modifies the angular correlation function. A direct signature of an orbifold is a single circle in the CMB that is invariant under rotation by 180 degrees. Searching the 7-year ILC map of WMAP, we find one candidate circle with high statistical significance. However, a closer look reveals…
We numerically study the superradiant instability of charged massless scalar field in the background of charged stringy black hole with mirror-like boundary condition. We compare the numerical result with the previous analytical result and show the dependencies of this instability upon various parameters of black hole charge $Q$, scalar field charge $q$, and mirror radius $r_m$. Especially, we have observed that imaginary part of BQN frequencies grows with the scalar field charge $q$ rapidly.
We consider aspects of the role of stringy scales and Hagedorn temperatures in the correspondence between various field theories and AdS-type spaces. The boundary theory is set on a toroidal world-volume to enable small scales to appear in the supergravity backgrounds also for low field-theory temperatures. We find that thermodynamical considerations tend to favour background manifolds with no string-size characteristic scales. The gravitational dynamics censors the reliable exposure of Hagedorn physics on the supergravity side, and the system does not allow the study of the Hagedorn scale by …
Holographic AdS/QCD models of the Pomeron unite a string-based description of hadronic reactions of the pre-QCD era with the perturbative BFKL approach. The specific version we will use due to Stoffers and Zahed, is based on a semiclassical quantization of a "tube" (closed string exchange or open string virtual pair production) in its Euclidean formulation using the scalar Polyakov action. This model has a number of phenomenologically successful results. The periodicity of a coordinate around the tube allows the introduction of a Matsubara time and therefore an effective temperature Teff on th…
We discuss the problem of introducing background spacetimes of the de Sitter type (quintessential backgrounds) in the context of fundamental theories involving supersymmetry. The role of a model presented in 1984, showing that these backgrounds can occur as spontaneously broken phases of locally supersymmetric 4D, N-extended theories, is highlighted. The present twin challenges of the presumed presence of supersymmetry in particle physics and the emergence of experimental evidence for a positive cosmological constant from type-II supernovae data are noted for the continued investigation of sup…
The operator formalism of the first quantized string theory is applied to the stringy excitations in the linear dilaton background. In particular, the normal-ordered vertex operators in the old-covariant spectrum of the bosonic open string, which correspond to the physical state solutions of the Virasoro constraints, are shown to satisfy the conformal algebra. Tree-level scattering amplitudes among different stringy states are computed using the coherent-state method and the modified inner product of the Hilbert space. Decoupling of the zero-norm states, i.e., the on-shell stringy Ward identit…
In this paper we revisit the formulation of scalar field theories on de Sitter backgrounds subject to the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). The GUP arises in several contexts in string theory, but is most readily thought of as resulting from using strings as effective probes of geometry, which suggests an uncertainty relation incorporating the string scale $l_s$. After reviewing the string theoretic case for the GUP, which implies a minimum length scale $l_s$, we follow in the footsteps of Kempf and concern ourselves with how one might write down field theories which respect the GUP. We…
In this note we perform canonical analysis of T-duality for non-relativistic string in stringy Newton-Cartan background. We confirm recent result that T-duality along longitudinal spatial direction of stringy Newton-Cartan geometry maps non-relativistic string to the relativistic string that propagates on the background with light-like isometry.
We directly derive the classical equation of motion, which governs the centre of mass of a test string, from the string action. In a certain case, the equation is basically same as one derived by Papapetrou, Dixon and Wald for a test extended body. We also discuss the force balance using a stringy probe particle for an exact spinning multi-soliton solution of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion theory. It is well known that the force balance condition yields the saturation of the Bogomol'nyi type bound in the lowest order. In the present formulation the gyromagnetic ratio of the stringy probe parti…
We study the motion of massive particles with electric and magnetic charges in the background of a magnetically charged Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger stringy black hole. We solve analytically the equations of motion of the test particles and we describe the orbital motion in terms of the Weierstrass elliptic functions. We find that there are critical values of the magnetic charge of the black hole and the magnetic charge of the test particle which characterize the bound and unbound orbits and we study two observables, the perihelion shift and the Lense-Thirring effect. The trajectories depend …
We study aspects of obtaining field theories with noncommuting time-space coordinates as limits of open-string theories in constant electric-field backgrounds. We find that, within the standard closed-string backgrounds, there is an obstruction to decoupling the time-space noncommutativity scale from that of the string fuzziness scale. We speculate that this censorship may be string-theory's way of protecting the causality and unitarity structure. We study the moduli space of the obstruction in terms of the open- and closed-string backgrounds. Cases of both zero and infinite brane tensions as …
We study string theory on $\mathbb{R}^d\times \mathbb{S}^1$. For applications to thermodynamics, the circumference of the $\mathbb{S}^1$ is the inverse temperature, $β$. We show that for $d=6$, the low energy effective field theory at the inverse Hagedorn temperature, $β=β_H$, has a one parameter family of normalizable spherically symmetric solutions that break the winding symmetry around the $\mathbb{S}^1$. The resulting backgrounds exhibit an enhanced symmetry, with the symmetry breaking pattern $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\to SU(2)_{\rm diagonal}$. The effective field theory analysis of these bac…
We consider hairy black hole solutions of Einstein-Yang-Mills-Dilaton theory, coupled to a Gauss-Bonnet curvature term, and we study their stability under small, spacetime-dependent perturbations. We demonstrate that the stringy corrections do not remove the sphaleronic instabilities of the coloured black holes with the number of unstable modes being equal to the number of nodes of the background gauge function. In the gravitational sector, and in the limit of an infinitely large horizon, the coloured black holes are also found to be unstable. Similar behaviour is exhibited by the magnetically…
We discuss the classical 2-dim. black-hole in the framework of the non-perturbative formulation (in terms of non-relativistic fermions) of c=1 string field theory. We identify an off-shell operator whose classical equation of motion is that of tachyon in the classical graviton-dilaton black-hole background. The black-hole `singularity' is identified with the fermi surface in the phase space of a single fermion, and as such is a consequence of the semi-classical approximation. An exact treatment reveals that stringy quantum effects wash away the classical singularity.
We further study the nonperturbative formulation of two-dimensional black holes. We find a nonlinear differential equation satisfied by the tachyon in the black hole background. We show that singularities in the tachyon field configurations are always associated with divergent semiclassical expansions and are absent in the exact theory. We also discuss how the Euclidian black hole emerges from an analytically continued fermion theory that corresponds to the right side up harmonic oscillator potential.

We define a wave-function for string theory cosmological backgrounds. We give a prescription for computing its norm following an earlier analysis within general relativity. Under Euclidean continuation, the cosmologies we discuss in this paper are described in terms of compact parafermionic worldsheet systems. To define the wave-function we provide a T-fold description of the parafermionic conformal field theory, and of the corresponding string cosmology. In specific examples, we compute the norm of the wave-function and comment on its behavior as a function of moduli.
We start by pointing out that certain Riemann surfaces appear rather naturally in the context of wave equations in the black hole background. For a given black hole there are two closely related surfaces. One is the Riemann surface of complexified ``tortoise'' coordinate. The other Riemann surface appears when the radial wave equation is interpreted as the Fuchsian differential equation. We study these surfaces in detail for the BTZ and Schwarzschild black holes in four and higher dimensions. Topologically, in all cases both surfaces are a sphere with a set of marked points; for BTZ and 4D Sch…
High-energy limits of fixed-angle tree-level stringy scattering amplitudes in the light-like linear dilaton background are calculated. Treating the time component of the gradient of light-like dilaton field (V_0) as a moduli parameter, we show that: (1) there exists a new fixed-point (V_0/E \to \infty) in the moduli space of the bosonic open string theory, where a new high-energy symmetry among scattering amplitudes can be identified, (2) this new symmetry can be interpreted as a deformation of the flat-space high-energy symmetry, as proposed by D. Gross. Hence, our results give a concrete ill…
I discuss a specific model of space-time foam, inspired by the modern non-perturbative approach to string theory (D-branes). The model views our world as a three brane, intersecting with D-particles that represent stringy quantum gravity effects, which can be real or virtual. In this picture, matter is represented generically by (closed or open) strings on the D3 brane propagating in such a background. Scattering of the (matter) strings off the D-particles causes recoil of the latter, which in turn results in a distortion of the surrounding space-time fluid and the formation of (microscopic, i…
In this paper, following the basic prescriptions of Gauge/String duality, we perform a strong coupling computation on \textit{classical} two point correlation between \textit{local} (single trace) operators in a gauge theory dual to $ κ$-deformed $ AdS_{3}\times S^{3}$ background. Our construction is based on the prescription that relates every local operator in a gauge theory to that with the (semi)classical string states propagating within the \textit{physical} region surrounded by the holographic screen in deformed $ AdS_3 $. In our analysis, we treat strings as being that of a point like o…

It is reported that massive scalar fields can form bound states around Kerr black holes [C. Herdeiro, and E. Radu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 221101 (2014)]. These bound states are called scalar clouds, which have a real frequency $ω=mΩ_H$, where $m$ is the azimuthal index and $Ω_H$ is the horizon angular velocity of Kerr black hole. In this paper, we study scalar clouds in a spherically symmetric background, i.e. charged stringy black holes, with the mirror-like boundary condition. These bound states satisfy the superradiant critical frequency condition $ω=qΦ_H$ for the charged scalar field, where…
We consider an exactly solvable worldsheet string theory in the background of a black brane with a gauge field flux. Holographically, such a system can be interpreted as a field theory with finite number of degrees of freedom at finite temperature and density. This is to be contrasted with more conventional holographic models which involve gravity in the bulk and possess infinite number of degrees of freedom and mean field critical exponents. We construct closed string vertex operators which holographically represent the U(1) gauge field and the stress energy tensor and compute their two-point…
We show that, without any extra physical degree introduced, the Standard Model can be readily reformulated as a Double Field Theory. Consequently, the Standard Model can couple to an arbitrary stringy gravitational background in an $\mathbf{O}(4,4)$ T-duality covariant manner and manifest two independent local Lorentz symmetries, $\mathbf{Spin}(1,3)\times\mathbf{Spin}(3,1)$. While the diagonal gauge fixing of the twofold spin groups leads to the conventional formulation on the flat Minkowskian background, the enhanced symmetry makes the Standard Model more rigid, and also stringy, than it appe…
The cubic interaction vertex and the dynamical supercharges are constructed for open strings ending on D7-branes, in light-cone superstring field theory in PP-wave background. In this context, we write down the symmetry generators in terms of the relevant group structure: SU(2) x SU(2) x SO(2) x SO(2), originating from the eight transverse directions in the PP-wave background and use the expressions to explicitly construct the vertex at the level of stringy zero modes. The results are further generalized to include all the stringy excitations as well.
In this dissertation we study hidden symmetries within the framework of string theory. There are two kinds of hidden symmetries investigated in this work: the first type is associated with dynamics of quantum fields and the second type is related to integrability of strings on various backgrounds. The goals of this thesis are twofold: extension of hidden symmetries known in general relativity to stringy backgrounds in higher dimensions and construction of new integrable string theories. In the context of the first goal we study hidden symmetries of stringy backgrounds, with and without supersy…
We present the distinctive collider signatures of No-Scale F-SU(5), a highly efficient and phenomenologically favored model built on the tripodal foundations of the F-lipped SU(5) X U(1)_X Grand Unified Theory, extra F-theory derived TeV scale vector-like particle multiplets, and the dynamic high scale boundary conditions of No-Scale Supergravity. The identifying features of the supersymmetric spectrum are a light stop and gluino, with both sparticles much lighter than all the additional squarks. This unique mass hierarchy leads to the enhanced production of events with an ultra-high multiplic…
We study Lorentzian D-particles in linear dilaton and the two dimensional black hole backgrounds. The D-particle trajectory follows an accelerated trajectory which is smeared by stringy corrections. For the black hole background we find that the portion of the trajectory behind the horizon appears to an asymptotic observer as ghost D-particle. This suggests a way of constructing a matrix model for the Lorentzian black hole background.
Supersymmetric localization has lead to remarkable progress in computing quantum corrections to BPS black hole entropy. The program has been successful especially for computing perturbative corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking area formula. In this work, we consider non-perturbative corrections related to polar states in the Rademacher expansion, which describes the entropy in the microcanonical ensemble. We propose that these non-perturbative effects can be identified with a new family of saddles in the localization of the quantum entropy path integral. We argue that these saddles, which are…
String theory on AdS3 backgrounds arises as an IR limit of Little String Theory on NS5-branes. A wide variety of holographic RG flows from the fivebrane theory in the UV to (orbifolds of) AdS3 in the IR is amenable to exact treatment in worldsheet string theory as a class of null-gauged WZW models. The condensate of stringy winding operators which resolves the near-source structure of fivebranes on the Coulomb branch plays a crucial role in AdS3, revealing stringy structure invisible to the supergravity approximation. The D-brane sector contains precursors of the long strings which dominate bl…
We investigate the thermodynamics of the RR charged two-dimensional type-0A black hole background at finite temperature, and compare with known 0A matrix model results. It has been claimed that there is a disagreement for the free energy between the spacetime and the dual matrix model. Here we find that this discrepancy is sensitive to how the cutoff is implemented on the spacetime side. In particular, the disagreement is resolved once we put the cutoff at a fixed distance away from the horizon, as opposed to a fixed position in space. Furthermore, the mass and the entropy of the black hole it…
We consider collision of two geodesic particles near the horizon of such an axially symmetric black hole (rotating or static) that the metric coefficient $g_{ϕϕ}\rightarrow 0$ there. It is shown that (both for regular and singular horizons) the energy in the centre of mass frame $% E_{c.m.}$ is indefinitely large even without fine-tuning of particles' parameters. Kinematically, this is collision between two rapid particles that approach the horizon almost with the speed of light but at different angles. The latter is the reason why the relative velocity tends to that of light, hence to high $E…
The possibility of generation of non-extensive statistics, in the sense of Tsallis, due to space-time foam is discussed within the context of a particular kind of foam in string/brane-theory, the D-particle foam model . The latter involves point-like brane defects (D-particles), which provide the topologically non-trivial foamy structures of space-time. A stochastic Langevin equation for the velocity recoil of D-particles can be derived from the pinched approximation for a sum over genera in the calculation of the partition function of a bosonic string in the presence of heavy D-particles. The…
The low energy effective field theory of type II D4-branes coupled to bulk supergravity fields is used to investigate {\it quantum} effects for D4-branes in the D0 supergravity background. Classically, the D4-branes are unaffected by this background. However, quantum (one-loop) effects are argued to lead to an induced density of D0-brane charge; e.g., D0-multipole moments on the D4-brane. The effect is divergent in field theory, but is expected to be cut-off naturally by stringy corrections.
The collisions of cosmic strings loops and the dynamics of junctions formations in expanding backgrounds are studied. The key parameter controlling the dynamics of junctions formation, the cosmic strings zipping and unzipping is the relative size of the loops compared to the Hubble expansion rate at the time of collision. We study analytically and numerically these processes for large super-horizon size loops, for small sub-horizon size loops as well as for loops with the radii comparable to the Hubble expansion rate at the time of collision.
In string theory, black holes have a minimum mass below which they transition into highly excited long and jagged strings --- ``string balls''. These are the stringy progenitors of black holes; because they are lighter, in theories of TeV-gravity, they may be more accessible to the LHC or the VLHC. They share some of the characteristics of black holes, such as large production cross sections. Furthermore, they evaporate thermally at the Hagedorn temperature and give rise to high-multiplicity events containing hard primary photons and charged leptons, which have negligible standard-model backgr…
We study the system of D6+D0 branes at sub-stringy scale. We show that the proper description of the system, for large background field associated with the D0-branes, is via spinning chargeless black holes in five dimensions. The repulsive force between the D6-branes and the D0-branes is understood through the centrifugal barrier. We discuss the implication on the stability of the D6+D0 solution.
The formation of trapped surfaces in the head-on collision of shock waves in conformal and non-conformal backgrounds is investigated. The backgrounds in- clude all interesting confining and non-confining backgrounds that may be relevant for QCD. Several transverse profiles of the shocks are investigated including distributions that fall-off as powers or exponentials. Different ways of cutting-off the UV contributions (that are expected to be perturbative in QCD) are explored. Under some plausible simplifying assumptions our estimates are converted into predictions for multiplicities for heavy-…
