We consider collision of two geodesic particles near the horizon of such an axially symmetric black hole (rotating or static) that the metric coefficient $g_{ϕϕ}\rightarrow 0$ there. It is shown that (both for regular and singular horizons) the energy in the centre of mass frame $% E_{c.m.}$ is indefinitely large even without fine-tuning of particles' parameters. Kinematically, this is collision between two rapid particles that approach the horizon almost with the speed of light but at different angles. The latter is the reason why the relative velocity tends to that of light, hence to high $E_{c.m.}$. Our approach is model-independent. It relies on general properties of geometry and is insensitive to the details of material source that supports the geometies of the type under consideration. For several particular models (the stringy black hole, the Brans-Dicke analogue of the Schwarzschild metric and the Janis-Newman-Winicour one) we recover the results found in literature previously.
We consider collision between two charged (or charged and neutral) particles near the black hole horizon in the strong magnetic field B. It is shown that there exists a strip near the horizon within which collision of any two such particles leads to ultrahigh energy in the centre of mass frame. The results apply to generic (not necessarily vacuum) black holes.
Recently, alternatives to the Bañados, Silk and West (BSW) effect were proposed which are (i) due to the existence of naked singularities instead of the horizon, (ii) require neither horizon nor naked singularity. We reveal the main features of such alternatives in a model-independent way. The metric should be close to that of the extremal black hole but the horizon should not form. Then, one can gain unbound the energy E_{c.m.} in the centre of mass frame due to head-on collision of particles near the would-be horizon. The energy measured at infinity can also be unbound. If instead of particl…
A new solution of four-dimensional vacuum General Relativity is presented. It describes the near horizon region of the extreme (maximally spinning) binary black hole system with two identical extreme Kerr black holes held in equilibrium by a massless strut. This is the first example of a non-supersymmetric, asymptotically flat near horizon extreme binary black hole geometry of two uncharged black holes. The black holes are co-rotating, and the solution is uniquely specified by the mass. The binary extreme system has finite entropy. The distance between the black holes is fixed, but there is a …
We study the deformation of the horizon-vicinity geometry caused by quantum gravitational effects. Departure from the semi-classical picture is noted, and the fact that the matter part of the action comes at a higher order in Newton's constant than does the Einstein-Hilbert term is crucial for the departure. The analysis leads to a Firewall-type energy measured by an infalling observer for which quantum generation of the cosmological constant is critical. The analysis seems to suggest that the Firewall should be a part of such deformation and that the information be stored both in the horizon-…
We study force-free magnetospheres in the Blandford-Znajek process from rapidly rotating black holes by adopting the near-horizon geometry of near-extreme Kerr black holes (near-NHEK). It is shown that the Znajek regularity condition on the horizon can be directly derived from the resulting stream equation. In terms of the condition, we split the full stream equation into two separate equations. Approximate solutions around the rotation axis are derived. They are found to be consistent with previous solutions obtained in the asymptotic region. The solutions indicate energy and angular-momentum…
Arguments are given for the conclusion that the energy of collision of two ultrarelativistic elementary particles due to gravitational radiation cannot exceed the Planck value. Comparison of the gravitational and electromagnetic radiation for charged particles close to the horizon of Kerr black hole is made. If for trans-Planckian energy the black hole can arise it is shown that the energy growth used in scattering for interaction of particles is still limited.
We investigate near-horizon geometry of the rotating Bañados Teiteilboim Zanelli (BTZ) black hole with torsion. Our main motivation is to gain insight into the role of torsion in the near-horizon geometry, which is well understood in the Riemannian case. We obtain that near-horizon geometry represents a generalization of AdS self-dual orbifold with non-trivial torsion. We analyze its asymptotic structure and derive the corresponding algebra of asymptotic symmetries, which consists of chiral Virasoro and centrally extended $u(1)$ Kac-Moody algebra.
It is shown that the near horizon geometry of a generic extreme regular black hole solution of Einstein gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics is described by the $AdS_2 \times S^2$ spacetime.
There is an exciting prospect of obtaining the shadow of astrophysical black holes (BHs) in the near future with the Event Horizon Telescope. As a matter of principle, this justifies asking how much one can learn about the BH horizon itself from such a measurement. Since the shadow is determined by a set of special photon orbits, rather than horizon properties, it is possible that different horizon geometries yield similar shadows. One may then ask how sensitive is the shadow to details of the horizon geometry? As a case study, we consider the double Schwarzschild BH and analyse the impact on …
We present a new vacuum solution of Einstein's equations describing the near horizon region of two neutral, extreme (zero-temperature), co-rotating, non-identical Kerr black holes. The metric is stationary, asymptotically near horizon extremal Kerr (NHEK), and contains a localized massless strut along the symmetry axis between the black holes. In the deep infrared, it flows to two separate throats which we call "pierced-NHEK" geometries: each throat is NHEK pierced by a conical singularity. We find that in spite of the presence of the strut for the pierced-NHEK geometries the isometry group SL…
It is demonstrated that the near-horizon geometry of two extreme Kerr black holes of equal mass, which are held a finite distance apart by a massless strut, introduced recently in [Phys. Rev. D 100 (2019) 044033], is a particular member of the near horizon Kerr-Bolt class.
We present a quantum description of electrically charged spherically symmetric black holes given by coherent states of gravitons in which both the central singularity and the Cauchy horizon are not realised.
We show that a class of solutions of minimal supergravity in five dimensions is given by lifts of three--dimensional Einstein--Weyl structures of hyper-CR type. We characterise this class as most general near--horizon limits of supersymmetric solutions to the five--dimensional theory. In particular, we deduce that a compact spatial section of a horizon can only be a Berger sphere, a product metric on $S^1\times S^2$ or a flat three-torus. We then consider the problem of reconstructing all supersymmetric solutions from a given near--horizon geometry. By exploiting the ellipticity of the lineari…
We consider generic nonextremal stationary dirty black holes. It is shown that in the vicinity of any bifurcation surface the energy of collision of two particles in the centre of mass frame can grow unbound. This is a generic property that, in particular, includes collisions near the inner black hole horizon analyzed earlier by different methods. The similar results are also valid for cosmological horizons. The case of the de Sitter metric is discussed.
The near-horizon geometry of evaporation black holes is determined according to the semi-classical Einstein equation. We consider spherically symmetric configurations in which the collapsing star has already collapsed below the Schwarzschild radius. The back-reaction of the vacuum energy-momentum, including Hawking radiation, is taken into account. The vacuum energy-momentum plays a crucial role in a small neighborhood of the apparent horizon, as it appears at the leading order in the semi-classical Einstein equation. Our study is focused on the time-dependent geometry in this region.
Nowadays, the effect of infinite energy in the centre of mass frame due to near-horizon collisions attracts much attention. We show generality of the effect combining two seemingly completely different approaches based on properties of a particle with respect to its local light cone and calculating its velocity in the locally nonrotaing frame directly. In doing so, we do not assume that particles move along geodesics. Usually, a particle reaches a horizon having the velocity equals that of light. However, there is also case of "critical" particles for which this is not so. It is just the pair o…
It has recently been shown that black holes can act as particle accelerators and two particles can collide with arbitrarily high center-of-mass (CM) energy under certain critical conditions. In this paper, we investigate particle collisions outside a Reissner-Nordström de Sitter (RN-dS) black hole. We find that infinite CM energy can be produced near the cosmological horizon for generic spacetime configurations. Remarkably, such infinite CM energy does not require the black hole to be extremal, in contrast to spacetimes in the absence of cosmological constants. However, since the charge of an …
Collisions of particles in black holes' ergospheres may result in an arbitrarily large center of mass energy. This led recently to the suggestion (Banados et al., 2009) that black holes can act as ultimate particle accelerators. If the energy of an outgoing particle is larger than the total energy of the infalling particles the energy excess must come from the rotational energy of the black hole and hence this must involve a Penrose process. However, while the center of mass energy diverges the position of the collision makes it impossible for energetic particles to escape to infinity. Followi…
The conjectured magnetized Kerr/CFT correspondence states that the quantum theory of gravity in the near horizon of extreme Kerr black holes immersed by the magnetic field, Near Horizon Extreme Magnetized Kerr black holes, is holographic dual to a two-dimensional chiral conformal field theory. To obtain Near Horizon Extreme Magnetized Kerr geometry, the extreme limit of the magnetized Kerr metric is taken so, $ a=M $ and then continued by transforming the coordinates to have a warped and twisted product of $ \textrm{AdS}_2 \times \textrm{S}^2 $, and also with the Near Horizon Extreme Kerr metr…
We obtain an explicit expression for the center-of-mass (CM) energy of two colliding general geodesic massive and massless particles at any spacetime point around a Kerr black hole. Applying this, we show that the CM energy can be arbitrarily high only in the limit to the horizon and then derive a formula for the CM energy of two general geodesic particles colliding near the horizon in terms of the conserved quantities of each particle and the polar angle. We present the necessary and sufficient condition for the CM energy to be arbitrarily high in terms of the conserved quantities of each par…
The purpose of this work is to construct asymptotically flat, time symmetric initial data with an apparent horizon of prescribed intrinsic and extrinsic geometry. To do this, we use the parabolic partial differential equation for prescribing scalar curvature. In this equation the horizon geometry is contained within the freely specifiable part of the metric. This contrasts with the conformal method in which the geometry of the horizon can only be specified up to a conformal factor.
Two particle collisions close to the horizon of the rotating nonextremal Kerr's and Schwarzschild black holes are analyzed. For the case of multiple collisions it is shown that high energy in the centre of mass frame occurs due to a great relative velocity of two particles and a large Lorentz factor. The dependence of the relative velocity on the distance to horizon is analyzed, the time of movement from the point in the accretion disc to the point of scattering with large energy as well as the time of back movement to the Earth are calculated. It is shown that they have reasonable order.
In this paper, we study the effect of ultra-high energy collisions of two particles with different energies near the horizon of a 2+1 dimensional BTZ black hole (BSW effect). We find that the particle with the critical angular momentum could exist inside the outer horizon of BTZ black hole regardless of the particle energy. Therefore, for the non-extremal BTZ black hole, the BSW process is possible on the inner horizon with the fine tuning of parameters which are characterized by the motion of particle. While for the extremal BTZ black hole, the particle with the critical angular momentum coul…
We apply the method of Bäcklund transformations to generate a new hierarchy of exact solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations starting from the extreme Kerr near-horizon geometry. Solutions with extreme Kerr near-horizon asymptotics containing an arbitrary number of free parameters are included.
All the Lie point symmetries of the near extremal horizon geometry equation, in the case of 4-dimensional Einstein vacuum spacetime with cosmological constant, are the diffeomorphisms of the space of the null generators of the horizon. This result is also generalised to the Maxwell-Einstein spacetime.
We consider AdS gravity duals to CFT on background spacetimes with a null infinity. Null infinity on the conformal boundary may extend to an extremal horizon in the bulk. For example it does so for Poincare-AdS, although does not for planar Schwarzschild-AdS. If null infinity does extend into an extremal horizon in the bulk, we show that the bulk near-horizon geometry is determined by the geometry of the boundary null infinity. Hence the `infra-red' geometry of the bulk is fixed by the large scale behaviour of the CFT spacetime. In addition the boundary stress tensor must have a particular dec…
Recently, Banados, Silk and West analyzed a collision of two particles near the horizon of the extremal Kerr black hole and demonstrated that the energy in the center-of-mass frame can be arbitrarily large provided the angular momentum of one of the colliding particles takes a special value. As is known, the vicinity of the extremal Kerr black hole horizon can be viewed as a complete vacuum spacetime in its own right. In this work, we consider a collision of two neutral particles within the context of the near horizon extremal Kerr geometry and demonstrate that the energy in the center-of-mass…
We first study the escape probability of the spinning particle emitted from the Kerr black hole and find that the escape probability increases with the spin of the particle around the extreme Kerr black hole; in contrast, the escape probability decreases at the position near the horizon but increases at the position far away from the horizon with the increasing spin of the particle. We then probe the relation between the escape probabilities and the energy extraction efficiencies of collisional Penrose processes for the particles with varying spin. For the extreme Kerr black hole, the efficien…
We consider the inverse problem of determining all extreme black hole solutions to the Einstein equations with a prescribed near-horizon geometry. We investigate this problem by considering infinitesimal deformations of the near-horizon geometry along transverse null geodesics. We show that, up to a gauge transformation, the linearised Einstein equations reduce to an elliptic PDE for the extrinsic curvature of a cross-section of the horizon. We deduce that for a given near-horizon geometry there exists a finite dimensional moduli space of infinitesimal transverse deformations. We then establis…
In a recent paper we developed a string cosmology background from classical string geometry. Here, we show that this background yields a solution to the size and horizon problems of Standard Big Bang cosmology while remaining compatible with the Transplanckian Censorship Conjecture. We also take a first look at the evolution of cosmological perturbations in this model.
It has been shown that extremal Kerr black holes can be used as particle accelerators and arbitrarily high energy may be obtained near the event horizon. We study particle collisions near the event horizon (outer horizon) and Cauchy horizon (inner horizon) of a non-extremal Kerr black hole. Firstly, we provide a general proof showing that particles cannot collide with arbitrarily high energies at the outter horizon. Secondly, we show that ultraenergetic collisions can occur near the inner horizon of a Kerr black hole with any spin parameter $a$.
We derive universal properties of the near-horizon geometry of spherically symmetric black holes that follow from the observability of a regular apparent horizon. Only two types of solutions are admissible. After reviewing their properties we show that only a special form of the solutions of the second type is consistent. We describe how these results extend to modified theories of gravity, including Einstein--Cartan theories. Then we describe the unique black hole formation scenario that necessarily involves both types of solutions. The generalized surface gravity is infinite at the apparent …

We have investigated the emerging conformal field theory behavior on the interior interface of the region near the cosmological event horizon on an example of massless Dirac fermions. Indeed, we have constructed and verified the emerging de Sitter/CFT correspondence for the near cosmological event horizon region. It is in this near horizon region where the infinitely thin shell of matter with the stiffest equation of state (Zeldovich's matter) is placed in the model for a thermodynamically stable `would be black hole' which is sometimes called a gravastar or a dark energy star. We put forward …
In this paper we consider the warped AdS$_{3}$ black hole solution of topologically massive gravity with a negative cosmological constant, and we investigate the possibility that it acts as a particle accelerator by analyzing the energy in the center of mass (CM) frame of two colliding particles in the vicinity of its horizon, which is known as the Bañados, Silk and West (BSW) process. Mainly, we show that the critical angular momentum $(L_c)$ of the particle decreases when the parameter that controls the stretching deformation ($ν$) increases. Also, we show that despite the particle with $L_c…
In this letter, we provide an alternative method to study the area spectrum of certain classes of extremal black holes which have near-horizon geometry as warped AdS. We argue that previous methods which are based on the existence of quasinormal modes may not be applicable in the extremal limit. The topology difference of the near-horizon geometry between non-extremal and extremal black holes implies a separate treatment is needed to study the area discreteness in the extremal limit. To be specific, we will study area spectrum of supersymmetric BMPV black holes/black rings and Reissner-Norstro…
With the back-reaction of Hawking radiation taken into consideration, the work of Kawai, Matsuo and Yokokura has shown that, under a few assumptions, the collapse of matter does not lead to event horizon nor apparent horizon. In this paper, we relax their assumptions and elaborate on the space-time geometry of a generic collapsing body with spherical symmetry. The geometry outside the collapsing sphere is found to be approximated by the geometry outside the white-hole horizon, hence the collapsing matter remains outside the Schwarzschild radius. As particles in Hawking radiation are created in…
Here we consider static, axially symmetric, rotating and charged Kerr-Sen Dilaton-Axion black hole metric in generalized Boyer-Lindquist coordinates as particle accelerators. We obtain the geodesic motions of particle. We find the effective potential and discuss the circular orbit of a particle. We investigate the center of mass energy of two colliding neutral particles with different rest masses falling from rest at infinity to near the non-extremal horizons (event horizon and Cauchy horizon) and extremal horizon of the Kerr-Sen black hole. Analogous to the Compton process, we discuss the col…
We show that the supersymmetric near horizon black hole geometries of 6-dimensional supergravity coupled to any number of scalar and tensor multiplets are either locally $AdS_3\times Σ^3$, where Σ^3 is a homology 3-sphere, or $\bR^{1,1}\times {\cal S}^4$, where ${\cal S}^4$ is a 4-manifold whose geometry depends on the hypermultiplet scalars. In both cases, we find that the tensorini multiplet scalars are constant and the associated 3-form field strengths vanish. We also demonstrate that the $AdS_3\times Σ^3$ horizons preserve 2, 4 and 8 supersymmetries. For horizons with 4 supersymmetries, Σ^…
We investigate a bunch of D0-branes to reveal its quantum nature from the gravity side. In the classical limit, it is well described by a non-extremal black 0-brane in type IIA supergravity. The solution is uplifted to the eleven dimensions and expressed by a non-extremal M-wave solution. After reviewing the effective action for the M-theory, we explicitly solve the equations of motion for the near horizon geometry of the M-wave. As a result we derive an unique solution which includes the effect of the quantum gravity. Thermodynamic property of the quantum near horizon geometry of the black 0-…
We show that the horizon geometry for supersymmetric black hole solutions of minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity is that of a particular Einstein-Cartan-Weyl (ECW) structure in three dimensions, involving the trace and traceless part of both torsion and nonmetricity, and obeying some precise constraints. In the limit of zero cosmological constant, the set of nonlinear partial differential equations characterizing this ECW structure reduces correctly to that of a hyper-CR Einstein-Weyl structure in the Gauduchon gauge, which was shown by Dunajski, Gutowski and Sabra to be the horizon g…
Near Horizon Extremal Geometries (NHEG) are solutions to gravity theories with $ SL(2,R) \times U(1)^N $ (for some N) symmetry, are smooth geometries and have no event horizon, unlike black holes. Following the ideas by R. M. Wald, we derive laws of NHEG dynamics, the analogs of laws of black hole dynamics for the NHEG. Despite the absence of horizon in the NHEG, one may associate an entropy to the NHEG, as a Noether-Wald conserved charge. We work out entropy and entropy perturbation laws, which are respectively universal relations between conserved Noether charges corresponding to the NHEG an…
