Convergence of operators acting on a given Hilbert space is an old and well studied topic in operator theory. The idea of introducing a related notion for operators acting on arying spaces is natural. However, it seems that the first results in this direction have been obtained only recently, to the best of our knowledge. Here we consider sectorial operators on scales of Hilbert spaces. We define a notion of convergence that generalises convergence of the resolvents in operator norm to the case when the operators act on different spaces and show that this kind of convergence is compatible with the functional calculus of the operator and moreover implies convergence of the spectrum. Finally, we present examples for which this convergence can be checked, including convergence of coefficients of parabolic problems. Convergence of a manifold (roughly speaking consisting of thin tubes) towards the manifold's skeleton graph plays a prominent role, being our main application.
Area integral functions are introduced for sectorial operators on Hilbert spaces. We establish the equivalence relationship between the square and area integral functions. This immediately extends McIntosh/Yagi's results on $H^{\8}$ functional calculus of sectorial operators on Hilbert spaces to the case when the square functions are replaced by the area integral functions.
In this paper sectorial operators, or more generally, sectorial relations and their maximal sectorial extensions in a Hilbert space ${\mathfrak H}$ are considered. The particular interest is in sectorial relations $S$, which can be expressed in the factorized form \[ S=T^*(I+iB)T \quad \text{or} \quad S=T(I+iB)T^*, \] where $B$ is a bounded selfadjoint operator in a Hilbert space ${\mathfrak K}$ and $T:{\mathfrak H}\to{\mathfrak K}$ or $T:{\mathfrak K}\to{\mathfrak H}$, respectively, is a linear operator or a linear relation which is not assumed to be closed. Using the specific factorized form…
Let $T$ be a closed linear relation from a Hilbert space ${\mathfrak H}$ to a Hilbert space ${\mathfrak K}$ and let $B \in \mathbf{B}({\mathfrak K})$ be selfadjoint. It will be shown that the relation $T^{*}(I+iB)T$ is maximal sectorial via a matrix decomposition of $B$ with respect to the orthogonal decomposition ${\mathfrak H}={\rm d\overline{om}\,} T^* \oplus {\rm mul\,} T$. This leads to an explicit expression of the corresponding closed sectorial form. These results include the case where ${\rm mul\,} T$ is invariant under $B$. The more general description makes it possible to give an exp…
We characterise the Kato property of a sectorial form $\mathfrak{a}$, defined on a Hilbert space $V$, with respect to a larger Hilbert space $H$ in terms of two bounded, selfadjoint operators $T$ and $Q$ determined by the imaginary part of $\mathfrak{a}$ and the embedding of $V$ into $H$, respectively. As a consequence, we show that if a bounded selfadjoint operator $T$ on a Hilbert space $V$ is in the Schatten class $S_p(V)$ ($p\geq 1$), then the associated form $\mathfrak{a}_T(\cdot, \cdot) := \langle (I+iT)\cdot ,\cdot\rangle_V$ has the Kato property with respect to every Hilbert space $H$ …
In this work, firstly the maximal sectorial linear relations are described. Later on, the discreteness of the spectrum of the linear maximal sectorial operators and asymptotical behaviour of the eigenvalues of such operators in terms of the eigenvalues of its real part are investigated. Finally, it is obtained one result for the differential operators for first order in the Hilbert space of vector functions in finite interval.
We study generalized polar decompositions of densely defined, closed linear operators in Hilbert spaces and provide some applications to relatively (form) bounded and relatively (form) compact perturbations of self-adjoint, normal, and m-sectorial operators.
We present a form convergence theorem for sequences of sectorial forms and their associated semigroups in a complex Hilbert space. Roughly speaking, the approximating forms $a_n$ are all `bounded below' by the limiting form $a$, but in contrast to the previous literature there is no monotonicity hypothesis on the sequence. Moreover, the forms are not supposed to be closed or densely defined. For a sectorial form one obtains an associated linear relation, whose negative generates a degenerate strongly continuous semigroup of linear operators. Our hypotheses on the sequence of forms imply strong…
We obtain estimate of the exponential decay rate of semigroup associated with second order linear differential equation $u"+Du'+Au=0$ in Hilbert space. We assume that $A$ is a selfadjoint positive definite operator, $D$ is an accretive sectorial operator and $\Ree D\geqδA$, $δ>0$. We obtain a location of the spectrum of a pencil associated with linear differential equation.
The infinitesimal generator $A$ of a strongly continuous semigroup on a Hilbert space is assumed to satisfy that $B_β:=A-β$ is a sectorial operator of angle less than $\fracπ{2}$ for some $β\geq 0$. If $B_β$ is dissipative in some equivalent scalar product then the Naimark-Arocena Representation Theorem is applied to obtain a Kre\uın space unitary dilation of the semigroup.
We obtain integral representations for the resolvent of $ψ(A)$, where $ψ$ is a holomorphic function mapping the right half-plane and the right half-axis into themselves, and $A$ is a sectorial operator on a Banach space. As a corollary, for a wide class of functions $ψ$, we show that the operator $-ψ(A)$ generates a sectorially bounded holomorphic $C_0$-semigroup on a Banach space whenever $-A$ does, and the sectorial angle of $A$ is preserved. When $ψ$ is a Bernstein function, this was recently proved by Gomilko and Tomilov, but the proof here is more direct. Moreover, we prove that such a pe…
This paper shows that for the domain intersection $\dom T\cap\dom T^*$ of a closed linear operator and its Hilbert space adjoint everything is possible for very common classes of operators with non-empty resolvent set. Apart from the most striking case of a maximal sectorial operator with $\dom T\cap\dom T^*=\{0\}$, we construct classes of operators for which $\dim(\dom T\cap\dom T^*)= n \in \dN_0$; $\dim(\dom T\cap\dom T^*)= \infty$ and at the same time $\codim(\dom T\cap\dom T^*)=\infty$; and $\codim(\dom T\cap\dom T^*)= n \in \dN_0$; the latter includes~the case that $\dom T\cap\dom T^*$ is…
We introduce and investigate $H^\infty$-functional calculus for commuting finite families of Ritt operators on Banach space $X$. We show that if either $X$ is a Banach lattice or $X$ or $X^*$ has property $(α)$, then a commuting $d$-tuple $(T_1,\ldots, T_d)$ of Ritt operators on $X$ has an $H^\infty$ joint functional calculus if and only if each $T_k$ admits an $H^\infty$ functional calculus. Next for $p\in(1,\infty)$, we characterize commuting $d$-tuple of Ritt operators on $L^p(Ω)$ which admit an $H^\infty$ joint functional calculus, by a joint dilation property. We also obtain a similar cha…
The form method as popularised by Lions and Kato is a successful device to associate m-sectorial operators with suitable elliptic or sectorial forms. McIntosh generalised the form method to an accretive setting, thereby allowing to associate m-accretive operators with suitable accretive forms. Classically, the form domain is required to be densely embedded into the Hilbert space. Recently, this requirement was relaxed by Arendt and ter Elst in the setting of elliptic and sectorial forms. Here we study the prospects of a generalised form method for accretive forms to generate accretive operator…
The weighted numerical radius of a Hilbert space operator has been defined recently. This article explores other properties and uses this newly defined numerical radius to obtain several new interesting inequalities for the weighted numerical radius and the numerical radius. In particular, new identities for the numerical radius, further comparisons between the numerical radius and the real and imaginary parts, and some inequalities for sectorial operators will be presented.
If $z\mapsto a_z$ is a holomorphic function with values in the sectorial forms in a Hilbert space, then the associated operator valued function $z\mapsto A_z$ is resolvent holomorphic. We give a proof of this result of Kato, on the basis of the Lax-Milgram lemma. We also show that the $C_0$-semigroups $T_z$ generated by $-A_z$ depend holomorphically on $z$.
This paper develops a Tikhonov regularization theory for nonlinear ill-posed operator equations in Banach spaces. As the main challenge, we consider the so-called oversmoothing state in the sense that the Tikhonov penalization is not able to capture the true solution regularity and leads to the infinite penalty value in the solution. We establish a vast extension of the Hilbertian convergence theory through the use of invertible sectorial operators from the holomorphic functional calculus and the prominent theory of interpolation scales in Banach spaces. Applications of the proposed theory inv…
The aim of this paper is to give a characterization in Hilbert spaces of the generators of $C_0$-semigroups associated with closed, sectorial forms in terms of the convergence of a generalized Trotter's product formula. In the course of the proof of the main result we also present a similarity result which can be of independent interest: for any unbounded generator $A$ of a $C_0$-semigroup $e^{tA}$ it is possible to introduce an equivalent scalar product on the space, such that $e^{tA}$ becomes non-quasi-contractive with respect to the new scalar product.
Using notions from the geometry of Banach spaces we introduce square functions $γ(Ω,X)$ for functions with values in an arbitrary Banach space $X$. We show that they have very convenient function space properties comparable to the Bochner norm of $L_2(Ω,H)$ for a Hilbert space $H$. In particular all bounded operators $T$ on $H$ can be extended to $γ(Ω,X)$ for all Banach spaces $X$. Our main applications are characterizations of the $H^{\infty}$--calculus that extend known results for $L_p$--spaces from \cite{CowlingDoustMcIntoshYagi}. With these square function estimates we show, e. g., that a…
We propose a new viewpoint on Hilbert scales extending them by means of all Hilbert spaces that are interpolation ones between spaces on the scale. We prove that this extension admits an explicit description with the help of $\mathrm{OR}$-varying functions of the operator generating the scale. We also show that this extended Hilbert scale is obtained by the quadratic interpolation (with function parameter) between the above spaces and is closed with respect to the quadratic interpolation between Hilbert spaces. We give applications of the extended Hilbert scale to interpolational inequalities,…
In this paper the notion of an abstract square function (estimate) is introduced as an operator X to gamma (H; Y), where X, Y are Banach spaces, H is a Hilbert space, and gamma(H; Y) is the space of gamma-radonifying operators. By the seminal work of Kalton and Weis, this definition is a coherent generalisation of the classical notion of square function appearing in the theory of singular integrals. Given an abstract functional calculus (E, F, Phi) on a Banach space X, where F (O) is an algebra of scalar-valued functions on a set O, we define a square function Phi_gamma(f) for certain H-valued…
We explicitly describe all Hilbert function spaces that are interpolation spaces with respect to a given couple of Sobolev inner product spaces considered over $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ or a half-space in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ or a bounded Euclidean domain with Lipschitz boundary. We prove that these interpolation spaces form a subclass of isotropic Hörmander spaces. They are parametrized with a radial function parameter which is OR-varying at $+\infty$ and satisfies some additional conditions. We give explicit examples of intermediate but not interpolation spaces.
We prove that sub-Riemannian manifolds are infinitesimally Hilbertian (i.e., the associated Sobolev space is Hilbert) when equipped with an arbitrary Radon measure. The result follows from an embedding of metric derivations into the space of square-integrable sections of the horizontal bundle, which we obtain on all weighted sub-Finsler manifolds. As an intermediate tool, of independent interest, we show that any sub-Finsler distance can be monotonically approximated from below by Finsler ones. All the results are obtained in the general setting of possibly rank-varying structures.
We prove spectral multiplier theorems for Hörmander classes $\mathcal{H}^α\_p$ for 0-sectorial operators A on Banach spaces assuming a bounded $H^\infty(Σ\_σ)$ calculus for some $σ\in (0,π)$ and norm and certain R-bounds on one of the following families of operators: the semigroup $e^{--zA}$ on $\mathbb{C}\_+$, the wave operators $e^{isA}$ for $s \in \mathbb{R}$, the resolvent $(λ-- A)^{-1}$ on $\mathbb{C} \backslash \mathbb{R}$, the imaginary powers $A^{it}$ for $t \in \mathbb{R}$ or the Bochner-Riesz means $(1-A/u)^α\_+$ for $u > 0.$ In contrast to the existing literature we neither assume t…
We consider homoclinic solutions for Hamiltonian systems in symplectic Hilbert spaces and generalise spectral flow formulas that were proved by Pejsachowicz and the author in finite dimensions some years ago. Roughly speaking, our main theorem relates the spectra of infinite dimensional Hamiltonian systems under homoclinic boundary conditions to intersections of their stable and unstable spaces. Our proof has some interest in its own. Firstly, we extend a celebrated theorem by Cappell, Lee and Miller about the classical Maslov index in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ to symplectic Hilbert spaces. Secondly, …
The 'relativistic' Heun equation is an 8-coupling difference equation that generalizes the 4-coupling Heun differential equation. It can be viewed as the time-independent Schrödinger equation for an analytic difference operator introduced by van Diejen. We study Hilbert space features of this operator and its 'modular partner', based on an in-depth analysis of the eigenvectors of a Hilbert-Schmidt integral operator whose integral kernel has a previously known relation to the two difference operators. With suitable restrictions on the parameters, we show that the commuting difference operators …
A resistance network is a connected graph $(G,c)$. The conductance function $c_{xy}$ weights the edges, which are then interpreted as conductors of possibly varying strengths. The Dirichlet energy form $\mathcal E$ produces a Hilbert space structure (which we call the energy space ${\mathcal H}_{\mathcal E}$) on the space of functions of finite energy. We use the reproducing kernel $\{v_x\}$ constructed in \cite{DGG} to analyze the effective resistance $R$, which is a natural metric for such a network. It is known that when $(G,c)$ supports nonconstant harmonic functions of finite energy, the …
We consider bounded linear operators acting on the $\ell_2$ space indexed by the nodes of a homogeneous tree. Using the Cuntz relations between the primitive shifts on the tree, we generalize the notion of the single-scale time-varying point evaluation and introduce the corresponding reproducing kernel Hilbert space in which Cauchy's formula holds. These notions are then used in the study of the Schur multipliers and of the associated de Branges-Rovnyak spaces. As an application we obtain realization of Schur multipliers as transfer operators of multiscale input-state-output systems.
