We show that if $M$ and $N$ are $C^{*}$-algebras and if $E$ (resp. $F$) is a $C^{*}$-correspondence over $M$ (resp. $N$), then a Morita equivalence between $(E,M)$ and $(F,N)$ implements a isometric functor between the categories of Hilbert modules over the tensor algebras of $\mathcal{T}_{+}(E)$ and $\mathcal{T}_{+}(F)$. We show that this functor maps absolutely continuous Hilbert modules to absolutely continuous Hilbert modules and provides a new interpretation of Popescu's reconstruction operator.
We show that two operator algebras are strongly Morita equivalent (in the sense of Blecher, Muhly and Paulsen) if and only if their categories of operator modules are equivalent via completely contractive functors. Moreover, any such functor is completely isometrically isomorphic to the Haagerup tensor product (= interior tensor product) with a strong Morita equivalence bimodule.
We revisit a central result of Muhly and Solel on operator algebras of C*-correspondences. We prove that (possibly non-injective) strongly Morita equivalent C*-correspondences have strongly Morita equivalent relative Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebras. The same holds for strong Morita equivalence (in the sense of Blecher, Muhly and Paulsen) and strong $Δ$-equivalence (in the sense of Eleftherakis) for the related tensor algebras. In particular, we obtain stable isomorphism of the operator algebras when the equivalence is given by a $σ$-TRO. As an application we show that strong Morita equivalence coinc…
We prove that two dual operator algebras are weak$^*$ Morita equivalent if and only if they have equivalent categories of dual operator modules via completely contractive functors which are also weak$^*$-continuous on appropriate morphism spaces. Moreover, in a fashion similar to the operator algebra case, we characterize such functors as the module normal Haagerup tensor product with an appropriate weak$^*$ Morita equivalence bimodule. We also develop the theory of the $W^*$-dilation, which connects the non-selfadjoint dual operator algebra with the $W^*$-algebraic framework. In the case of w…
Muhly and Solel developed a notion of Morita equivalence for $C^{*}$- correspondences, which they used to show that if two $C^{*}$-correspondences $E$ and $F$ are Morita equivalent then their tensor algebras $\mathcal{T}_{+}(E)$ and $\mathcal{T}_{+}(F)$ are (strongly) Morita equivalent operator algebras. We give the weak$^{*}$ version of this result by considering (weak) Morita equivalence of $W^{*}$-correspondences and employing Blecher and Kashyap's notion of Morita equivalence for dual operator algebras. More precisely, we show that weak Morita equivalence of $W^{*}$-correspondences $E$ and…
We give a solution, via operator spaces, of an old problem in the Morita equivalence of C*-algebras. Namely, we show that C*-algebras are strongly Morita equivalent in the sense of Rieffel if and only if their categories of left operator modules are isomorphic via completely contractive functors. Moreover, any such functor is completely isometrically isomorphic to the Haagerup tensor product (= interior tensor product) with a strong Morita equivalence bimodule. An operator module over a C$^*-$algebra $\A$ is a closed subspace of some B(H) which is left invariant under multiplication by $π(\A)$…
We consider certain categorical structures that are implicit in subfactor theory. Making the connection between subfactor theory (at finite index) and category theory explicit sheds light on both subjects. Furthermore, it allows various generalizations of these structures, e.g. to arbitrary ground fields, and the proof of new results about topological invariants in three dimensions. The central notion is that of a Frobenius algebra in a tensor category A, which reduces to the classical notion if A=F-Vect, where F is a field. An object X in A with two-sided dual X^ gives rise to a Frobenius alg…
In previous work, we defined and studied $Σ^*$-modules, a class of Hilbert $C^*$-modules over $Σ^*$-algebras (the latter are $C^*$-algebras that are sequentially closed in the weak operator topology). The present work continues this study by developing the appropriate $Σ^*$-algebraic analogue of the notion of strong Morita equivalence for $C^*$-algebras. We define strong $Σ^*$-Morita equivalence, prove a few characterizations, look at the relationship with equivalence of categories of a certain type of Hilbert space representation, study $Σ^*$-versions of the interior and exterior tensor produ…
We consider a class of proper actions of locally compact groups on imprimitivity bimodules over C*-algebras which behave like the proper actions on C*-algebras introduced by Rieffel in 1988. We prove that every such action gives rise to a Morita equivalence between a crossed product and a generalized fixed-point algebra, and in doing so make several innovations which improve the applicability of Rieffel's theory. We then show how our construction can be used to obtain canonical tensor-product decompositions of important Morita equivalences. Our results show, for example, that the different pro…
We compute the Hochschild homology of Leavitt path algebras over a field $k$. As an application, we show that $L_2$ and $L_2\otimes L_2$ have different Hochschild homologies, and so they are not Morita equivalent; in particular they are not isomorphic. Similarly, $L_\infty$ and $L_\infty\otimes L_\infty$ are distinguished by their Hochschild homologies and so they are not Morita equivalent either. By contrast, we show that $K$-theory cannot distinguish these algebras; we have $K_*(L_2)=K_*(L_2\otimes L_2)=0$ and $K_*(L_\infty)=K_*(L_\infty\otimes L_\infty)=K_*(k)$.
In this article we establish the foundations of the Morita homotopy theory of C*-categories. Concretely, we construct a cofibrantly generated simplicial symmetric monoidal Quillen model structure M_Mor on the category C*cat1 of small unital C*-categories. The weak equivalences are the Morita equivalences and the cofibrations are the *-functors which are injective on objects. As an application, we obtain an elegant description of the Brown-Green-Rieffel Picard group in the associated Morita homotopy category Ho(M_Mor). We then prove that the Morita homotopy category is semi-additive. By group c…
We introduce a notion of Morita equivalence for non-selfadjoint operator algebras equipped with a completely isometric involution (operator *-algebras). We then show that the unbounded Kasparov product by a Morita equivalence bimodule induces an isomorphism between equivalence classes of twisted spectral triples over Morita equivalent operator *-algebras. This leads to a tentative definition of unbounded bivariant K-theory and we prove that this bivariant theory is related to Kasparov's bivariant K-theory via the Baaj-Julg bounded transform. Moreover, the unbounded Kasparov product provides a …
A bicommutant category is a higher categorical analog of a von Neumann algebra. We study the bicommutant categories which arise as the commutant $\mathcal{C}'$ of a fully faithful representation $\mathcal{C}\to\operatorname{Bim}(R)$ of a unitary fusion category $\mathcal{C}$. Using results of Izumi, Popa, and Tomatsu about existence and uniqueness of representations of unitary (multi)fusion categories, we prove that if $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{D}$ are Morita equivalent unitary fusion categories, then their commutant categories $\mathcal{C}'$ and $\mathcal{D}'$ are equivalent as bicommutant …
We prove two results on the tube algebras of rigid C$^*$-tensor categories. The first is that the tube algebra of the representation category of a compact quantum group $G$ is a full corner of the Drinfeld double of $G$. As an application we obtain some information on the structure of the tube algebras of the Temperley-Lieb categories $TL(d)$ for $d>2$. The second result is that the tube algebras of weakly Morita equivalent C$^*$-tensor categories are strongly Morita equivalent. The corresponding linking algebra is described as the tube algebra of the $2$-category defining the Morita context.
We introduce a Morita type equivalence: two operator algebras $A$ and $B$ are called strongly $Δ$-equivalent if they have completely isometric representations $α$ and $β$ respectively and there exists a ternary ring of operators $M$ such that $α(A)$ (resp. $β(B)$) is equal to the norm closure of the linear span of the set $M^*β(B)M, $ (resp. $Mα(A)M^*$). We study the properties of this equivalence. We prove that if two operator algebras $A$ and $B,$ possessing countable approximate identities, are strongly $Δ$-equivalent, then the operator algebras $A\otimes \cl K$ and $B\otimes \cl K$ are iso…
We show that there is a functor from the category of positive admissible ternary rings to the category of $*$-algebras, which induces an isomorphism of partially ordered sets between the families of $C^*$-norms on the ternary ring and its corresponding $*$-algebra. We apply this functor to obtain Morita-Rieffel equivalence results between cross sectional $C^*$-algebras of Fell bundles, and to extend the theory of tensor products of $C^*$-algebras to the larger category of full Hilbert $C^*$-modules. We prove that, like in the case of $C^*$-algebras, there exist maximal and minimal tensor produ…
We give an overview of relative tensor products (RTPs) for von Neumann algebra modules. For background, we start with the categorical definition and go on to examine its algebraic formulation, which is applied to Morita equivalence and index. Then we consider the analytic construction, with particular emphasis on explaining why the RTP is not generally defined for every pair of vectors. We also look at recent work justifying a representation of RTPs as composition of unbounded operators, noting that these ideas work equally well for L^p modules. Finally, we prove some new results characterizin…
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a completely rational local Möbius covariant net on $S^1$, which describes a set of chiral observables. We show that local Möbius covariant nets $\mathcal{B}_2$ on 2D Minkowski space which contains $\mathcal{A}$ as chiral left-right symmetry are in one-to-one correspondence with Morita equivalence classes of Q-systems in the unitary modular tensor category $\mathrm{DHR}(\mathcal{A})$. The Möbius covariant boundary conditions with symmetry $\mathcal{A}$ of such a net $\mathcal{B}_2$ are given by the Q-systems in the Morita equivalence class or by simple objects in the modul…
Popa introduced the tensor category $\tildeχ(M)$ of approximately inner, centrally trivial bimodules of a $\rm{II}_{1}$ factor $M$, generalizing Connes' $χ(M)$. We extend Popa's notions to define the $\rm W^*$-tensor category $\operatorname{End}_{\rm loc}(\mathcal{C})$ of local endofunctors on a $\rm W^*$-category $\mathcal{C}$. We construct a unitary braiding on $\operatorname{End}_{\rm loc}(\mathcal{C})$, giving a new construction of a braided tensor category associated to an arbitrary $\rm W^*$-category. For the $\rm W^*$-category of finite modules over a $\rm{II}_{1}$ factor, this yields a…
We give a notion of equivalence for Fell bundles over groups, not necessarily saturated nor separable, and show that equivalent Fell bundles have Morita-Rieffel equivalent cross-sectional $C^*$-algebras. Our notion is originated in the context of partial actions and their enveloping actions. The equivalence between two Fell bundles is implemented by a bundle of Hilbert bimodules with some extra structure. Suitable cross-sectional spaces of such a bundle turn out to be imprimitivity bimodules for the cross-sectional $C^*$-algebras of the involved Fell bundles. We show that amenability is preser…
We show that the gluing construction for Hilbert modules introduced by Raeburn in his computation of the Picard group of a continuous-trace C*-algebra (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 1981) can be applied to arbitrary C*-algebras, via an algebraic argument with the Haagerup tensor product. We put this result into the context of descent theory by identifying categories of gluing data for Hilbert modules over C*-algebras with categories of comodules over C*-coalgebras, giving a Hilbert-module version of a standard construction from algebraic geometry. As a consequence we show that if two C*-algebras ha…
We are concerned with the center (=quantum double) of tensor categories and prove generalizations of several results proven previously for quantum doubles of Hopf algebras. We consider F-linear tensor categories C with simple unit and finitely many isomorphism classes of simple objects. We assume that C is either a *-category (i.e. there is a positive *-operation on the morphisms) or semisimple and spherical over an algebraically closed field F. In the latter case we assume that dim C=sum_i d(X_i)^2 is non-zero, where the summation runs over the isomorphism classes of simple objects. We prove:…
