We investigate the contributions of finite-temperature magnetic fluctuations to the thermodynamic properties of bcc Fe as a function of pressure. First, we apply a tight-binding total-energy model parameterized to first-principles linearized augmented planewave computations to examine various ferromagnetic, anti-ferromagnetic, and noncollinear spin spiral states at zero temperature. The tight-binding data are fit to a generalized Heisenberg Hamiltonian to describe the magnetic energy functional based on local moments. We then use Monte Carlo simulations to compute the magnetic susceptibility, the Curie temperature, heat capacity, and magnetic free energy. Including the finite-temperature magnetism improves the agreement with experiment for the calculated thermal expansion coefficients.
We here study electronic structure and magnetic properties of bcc Co$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$, Cr$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$ and Mn$_{x}$Fe$_{1-x}$ in their ferromagnetic phases using Augmented Space Recursion technique coupled with tight-binding linearized muffin tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method. We make a systematic study of magnetic properties like magnetic moment and Curie temperature and try to draw some conclusions on their variation across the row of 3-{\it d} transition metal series in periodic table using arguments based on effects like charge transfer, exchange splitting and hybridization.
The pressure induced bcc to hcp transition in Fe has been investigated via ab-initio electronic structure calculations. It is found by the disordered local moment (DLM) calculations that the temperature induced spin fluctuations result in the decrease of the energy of Burgers type lattice distortions and softening of the transverse $N$-point $TA_1$ phonon mode with $[\bar{1}10]$ polarization. As a consequence, spin disorder in an system leads to the increase of the amplitude of atomic displacements. On the other hand, the exchange coupling parameters obtained in our calculations strongly decre…
Co-rich Co$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$ alloys have hcp or fcc disordered phases and those ferromagnetic orderings are significantly deteriorated with increasing Mn concentration $x$ in bulk. On the other hand, those metastable bcc phases show properties attractive to spintronics, e.g., high tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio of more than 200% (600%) at 300 K (10 K) in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with the $x$ = 0.25 bcc alloy electrodes [Kunimatsu et al., Appl. Phys. Express 13, 083007 (2020)]. Here, we report systematic study of structure and magnetism for epitaxial thin films as well as the TMR effe…
Nanoparticles usually exhibit pronounced anisotropic properties, and a close insight into the atomic-scale deformation mechanisms is of great interest. In present study, atomic simulations are conducted to analyze the compression of bcc nanoparticles, and orientation-dependent features are addressed. It is revealed that surface morphology under indenter predominantly governs the initial elastic response. The loading curve follows the flat punch contact model in [110] compression, while it obeys the Hertzian contact model in [111] and [001] compressions. In plastic deformation regime, full disl…
Tension-compression asymmetry is a notable feature of plasticity in bcc single crystals. Recent experiments reveal striking differences in the plasticity of bcc nanopillars for tension and compression. Here we present results from molecular dynamics simulations of nanopillars of bcc Fe in tension and compression. We find that a totally different deformation mechanism applies in each cases: dislocation glide in compression and twinning in tension. This difference explains experimentally-observed asymmetry in the nanopillar morphology.
We present an ab-initio-based effective interaction model (EIM) for the study of magnetism, thermodynamics, and their interplay in body-centered cubic Fe-Co alloys, with Co content from 0 to 70%. The model includes explicitly both spin and chemical variables. For the former, a Heisenberg formalism is adopted. But, the spin magnitude of each Fe atom varies according to its local chemical environment, following a simple rule determined by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The proposed model is able to describe precisely the ground-state magneto-energetic landscape of both chemically …
Structural stability of paramagnetic (PM) body-centered cubic (bcc) Fe under pressure is investigated based on first-principles phonon calculations. Spin configurations of the PM phase are approximated using a binary special quasi-random structure (SQS) with a supercell approach. The behavior of phonon modes can be associated with pressure-induced phase transitions to the face-centered cubic (fcc) and hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structures as follows: For the PM phase, it is found that the low-frequency transverse mode at the N point (N$_4^-$ mode), which corresponds to a bcc-hcp phase transi…
Bulk Au-Fe alloys separate into Au-based fcc and Fe-based bcc phases, but L1$_0$ and L1$_2$ orderings were reported in single-phase Au-Fe nanoparticles. Motivated by these observations, we study the structural and ordering energetics in this alloy by combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with effective Hamiltonian techniques: a cluster expansion with structural filters, and the configuration-dependent lattice deformation model. The phase separation tendency in Au-Fe persists even if the fcc-bcc decomposition is suppressed. The relative stability of disordered bcc and fcc phase…
The magnetic and electronic structures of $3d$ impurity atoms from Sc to Zn in ferromagnetic body-centered cubic iron are investigated using the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method based on the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We found that in general, the GGA results are closer to the experimental values than those of the local spin density approximation. The calculated formation enthalpy data indicate the importance of a systematic study on the ternary Fe-C-$X$ systems rather than the binary Fe-$X$ systems, in steel design. The lattice parameters are o…
The effects of magnetism on the Bain transformation of $α$-phase FeNi systems are investigated by using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method based on the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We found that Ni impurity in bcc Fe increases the lattice constant in ferromagnetic (FM) states, but not in the nonmagnetic (NM) states. The shear modulus $G$ and Young's modulus $E$ of bcc Fe are also increased by raising the concentration of nickel. All the compositions considered show high shear anisotropy and the ratio of the bulk to shear modulus is greater than 1.75 …
Using a first principles based, magnetic tight-binding total energy model, the magnetization energy and moments are computed for various ordered spin configurations in the high pressure polymorphs of iron (fcc, or $γ$-Fe, and hcp, or $ε$-Fe), as well ferromagnetic bcc iron ($α$-Fe). For hcp, a non-collinear, antiferromagnetic, spin configuration that minimizes unfavorable ferromagnetic nearest neighbor ordering is the lowest energy state and is more stable than non-magnetic $ε$ iron up to about 75 GPa. Accounting for non-collinear magnetism yields better agreement with the experimental equatio…

We employ state-of-the-art ab initio simulations within the dynamical mean-field theory to study three likely phases of iron (hexogonal close-packed, hcp, face centered cubic, fcc, and body centered cubic, bcc) at the Earth's core conditions. We demonstrate that the correction to the electronic free energy due to correlations can be significant for the relative stability of the phases. The strongest effect is observed in bcc Fe, which shows a non-Fermi liquid behaviour, and where a Curie-Weiss behaviour of the uniform susceptbility hints at a local magnetic moment still existing at 5800 K and …
A canonical band theory of non-collinear magnetism is developed and applied to the close packed fcc and bcc crystal structures. Several examples of non-collinear magnetism in the periodic table are seen to be canonical in origin. This is a parameter free theory where the crystal and magnetic symmetry, and exchange splitting, uniquely determine the electronic bands. The only contribution to the determination of magnetic stability is the change in band energy due to hybridisation resulting from spin mixing, and on this basis we are able to analyse the origin of the stability of non-collinear mag…

We use first principles molecular dynamics simulations coupled to the thermodynamic integration method to study the hcp-bcc transition and melting of beryllium up to a pressure of 1600~GPa. We derive the melting line by equating solid and liquid Gibbs free energies, and represent it by a Simon Glatzel fit $T_m= 1564~\text{K} (1 + P/(15.6032 ~\text{GPa}))^{0.383}$, which is in good agreement with previous two-phase simulations below 6000~K. We also derive the hcp-bcc solid-solid phase boundary and show the quasiharmonic approximation underestimates the stability of the hcp structure, predicting…
We develop a self-consistent relativistic disordered local moment (RDLM) scheme aimed at describing finite temperature magnetism of itinerant metals from first principles. Our implementation in terms of the Korringa--Kohn--Rostoker multiple scattering theory and the coherent potential approximation allows to relate the orientational distribution of the spins to the electronic structure, thus a self-consistent treatment of the distribution is possible. We present applications for bulk bcc Fe, L1$_0$-FePt and FeRh ordered in the CsCl structure. The calculations for Fe show significant variation …
Ab initio calculation results for the electronic structure of disordered bcc Fe(x)Al(1-x) (0.4<x<0.75), Co(x)Al(1-x) and Ni(x)Al(1-x) (x=0.4; 0.5; 0.6) alloys near the 1:1 stoichiometry, as well as of the ordered B2 (FeAl, CoAl, NiAl) phases with point defects are presented. The calculations were performed using the coherent potential approximation within the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method (KKR-CPA) for the disordered case and the tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method for the intermetallic compounds. We studied in particular the onset of magnetism in Fe-Al and Co-Al systems a…
In this work we propose a method for the structural relaxation of magnetic materials in the paramagnetic regime, in an adiabatic fast-magnetism approximation within the disordered local moment (DLM) picture in the framework of density functional theory (DFT). The method is straight forward to implement using any $ab$ $initio$ code that allows for structural relaxations. We illustrate the importance of considering the disordered magnetic state during lattice relaxations by calculating formation energies and geometries for an Fe vacancy and C insterstitial atom in bcc Fe as well as bcc Fe$_{1-x}…
First-principles based on density functional theory is used to study the phase stability, elastic, magnetic, and electronic properties of cubic (c)-Fe$_4$C. Our results show that c-Fe$_{4}$C has a ferromagnetic (FM) ground state structure compared with antiferromagnetic (AFM) and nonmagnetic (NM)states. To study the phase stability of c-Fe$_4$C, BCC Fe$_4$C, FCC Fe$_4$C, and BCC Fe$_{16}$C, where C is considered at tetrahedral and octahedral interstitial sites, are also considered. Although, the formation energy of c-Fe$_4$C is smaller than BCC Fe$_4$C, but the shear moduli of c-Fe$_4$C is neg…
The equation of state, structural behavior and phase stability of α-uranium have been investigated up to 1.3 TPa using density functional theory, adopting a simple description of electronic structure that neglects the spin-orbit coupling and strong electronic correlations. The comparison of the enthalpies of Cmcm (alpha-U), bcc, hcp, fcc, and bct predicts that the aplpha-U phase is stable up to a pressure of ~285 GPa, above which it transforms to a bct-U phase. The enthalpy differences between the bct and bcc phase decrease with pressure, but bcc is energetically unfavorable at least up to 1.3…
Prediction of the Curie temperature is of significant importance for the design of ferromagnetic materials. Even though the Curie temperature has been estimated using the Heisenberg model, magnetic exchange coupling parameters widely used is thus far based on first-principles calculations at zero temperature. In the explicit consideration of temperature effects, it is important to minimise the total free energy, because the magnetic and phonon free energies correlate with each other. Here, we propose a first-principles thermodynamic approach to minimise the total free energy considering both t…

Temperature-dependent magnetic experiments like pump-probe measurements generated by a pulsed laser have become a crucial technique for switching the magnetization in the picosecond time scale. Apart from having practical implications on the magnetic storage technology, the research field of ultrafast magnetization poses also fundamental physical questions. To correctly describe the time evolution of the atomic magnetic moments under the influence of a temperature-dependent laser pulse, it remains crucial to know if the magnetic material under investigation has magnetic excitation spectrum tha…
The magnetic properties of iron (spin and orbital magnetic moments, magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy) in various geometries and dimensionalities are investigated by using a parametrized tight-binding model in an $s$, $p$ and $d$ atomic orbital basis set including spin polarization and the effect of spin-orbit coupling. The validity of this model is well established by comparing the results with those obtained by using an ab-initio code. This model is applied to the study of iron in bulk bcc and fcc phases, $(110)$ and $(001)$ surfaces and to the monatomic wire, at several interatomic dista…
The modern quantum theory of magnetism in solids is getting commonly derived using Green's functions formalism. The popularity draws itself from remarkable opportunities to capture the microscopic landscape of exchange interactions, starting from a tight-binding representation of the electronic structure. Indeed, the conventional method of infinitesimal spin rotations, considered in terms of local force theorem, opens vast prospects of investigations regarding the magnetic environment, as well as pairwise atomic couplings. However, this theoretical concept practically does not devoid of intrin…
Using \emph{ab initio} alloy theory formulated within the exact muffin-tin orbitals theory in combination with the coherent potential approximation, we investigate the ideal tensile strength (ITS) in the $[001]$ direction of bcc ferro-/ferrimagnetic (FFM) and paramagnetic (PM) Fe$_{1-x}M_{x}$ ($M=$ Al, V, Cr, Mn, Co, or Ni) random alloys. The ITS of ferromagnetic (FM) Fe is calculated to be $12.6$\,GPa, in agreement with available data, while the PM phase turns out to posses a significantly lower value of $0.7\,$GPa. Alloyed to the FM matrix, we predict that V, Cr, and Co increase the ITS of F…
Compositionally complex materials (CCMs) present a potential paradigm shift in the design of magnetic materials. These alloys exhibit long-range structural order coupled with limited or no chemical order. As a result, extreme local environments exist with a large opposing magnetic energy term, which can manifest large changes in the magnetic behavior. In the current work, the magnetic properties of (Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni) alloys are presented. These materials were prepared by room-temperature combinatorial sputtering, resulting in a range of compositions with a single BCC structural phase and no chem…
Recent high-pressure x-ray diffraction studies of alkali metals revealed unusual complex structures that follow the body-centered and face-centered cubic structures on compression. The structural sequence of potassium under compression to 1 Megabar is as follows: bcc - fcc - h-g (tI19*), hP4 - oP8 - tI4 - oC16. We consider configurations of Brillouin-Jones zones and the Fermi surface within a nearly-free-electron model in order to analyze the importance of these configurations for the crystal structure energy that contains two main contributions: electrostatic (Ewald) and electronic (band stru…
Elements of group I in the Periodic table have valence electrons of s-type and are usually considered as simple metals. Crystal structures of these elements at ambient pressure are close-packed and high-symmetry of bcc and fcc types, defined by electrostatic (Madelung) energy. Diverse structures were found under high pressure with decrease of the coordination number, packing fraction and symmetry. Formation of complex structures can be understood within the model of Fermi sphere - Brillouin zone interactions and supported by Hume-Rothery arguments. With the volume decrease there is a gain in t…
The classical Heisenberg type spin Hamiltonian is widely used for simulations of finite temperature properties of magnetic metals often using parameters derived from first principles calculations. In itinerant electron systems, however, the atomic magnetic moments vary their amplitude with temperature and the spin Hamiltonian should thus be extended to incorporate the effects of longitudinal spin fluctuations (LSF). Although the simple phenomenological spin Hamiltonians describing LSF can be efficiently parameterized in the framework of the constrained Local Spin Density Approximation (LSDA) a…

We report a theoretical study of Sb2S3, Sb2Se3 and Bi2S3 sesquichalcogenides at hydrostatic pressures up to 60 GPa. We explore the possibility that the R-3m, C2/m, C2/c and Im-3m phases observed in sesquichalcogenides with heavier cations, viz. Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3, could also be formed in the former compounds as suggested by recent experiments. Our calculations show that the C2/m and C2/c phases are energetically unstable in any of the three compounds and over the entire range of pressures examined. In contrast, the disordered bcc-like Im-3m phase is energetically stable at high pressure…
A detailed understanding of the material response to rapid compression is challenging and demanding. For instance, the element gold under dynamic compression exhibits complex phase transformations where there exist some large discrepancies between experimental and theoretical studies. Here, we combined large-scale molecular dynamics simulations with a deep potential to elucidate the dynamic compression processes of gold from an atomic level. The potential is constructed by accurately reproducing the free energy surfaces of density-functional-theory calculations for gold, from ambient condition…
By combining ab-initio electron theory and statistical mechanics, the physical properties of the ternary intermetallic system Ni-Fe-Al in the ground state and at finite temperatures were investigated. The Ni-Fe-Al system is not only of high technological interest, but exhibits also rich physics, e.g., a delicate interplay between structure and magnetism over a wide composition range and substantial electronic correlations which is challenging for modern electronic structure methods. The new Stuttgart ab-initio mixed-basis pseudopotential code in the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) was…
A hybrid ab initio theoretical approach for examining thermal properties in magnetic systems of unknown entropy is presented. Commonly used theoretical approaches interrogate thermal properties from Gibbs/Helmholtz free energies, which require an accurate model of magnetic interactions. The present approach avoids this requirement by instead calculating system pressure from thermally disordered microstates that properly incorporate vibrational and spin subsystems at each temperature as well as the coupling between these subsystems. In place of a specific model for magnetic interactions, the ap…
Using first-principles calculations, we show that the (001) surface of the ferromagnet La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ under epitaxial compression favors antiferromagnetic ordering in the first few surface layers, coexisting with ferromagnetic bulk order. The change in magnetic order is accompanied by a marked surface-related spectral pseudogap, signaling a metal-insulator near-transition at the surface. All surfaces exhibit huge outward relaxations an rumpling of the MnO$_{2}$ and LaO surface planes, causing a distinct shift in work function. The AF phase is an extreme surface-assisted case of th…
The discovery of monolayer MA$_2$Z$_4$ (M = transition metals; A = IVA elements; Z = VA elements, Science 369, 2020, 670-674) family has led another advance for facilitating and harnessing magnetism in low-dimensional materials. However, only Cr and V based MA$_2$N$_4$ compounds exhibit intrinsic magnetism yet with unsatisfied magnetic ordering temperature. Herein, we identify a stable ferromagnetic number of this family, i.e., VGe$_2$Z$_4$ monolayer, by means of first-principles calculations. We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of the high-pressure behavior of thallium. X-ray diffraction experiments have been carried out at room temperature up to 125 GPa using diamond-anvil cells, nearly doubling the pressure range of previous experiments. We have confirmed the hcp-fcc transition at 3.5 GPa and determined that the fcc structure remains stable up to the highest pressure attained in the experiments. In addition, HP-HT experiments have been performed up to 8 GPa and 700 K by using a combination of x-ray diffraction and a resistively heated diamond-anvil cell. Info…
We present magnetization measurements on polycrystalline $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under hydrostatic pressures up to 3~GPa and construct the temperature-pressure phase diagram of this material. Our data confirm that magnetic order breaks down in a first-order phase transition at $p_{\rm{c}}$ $\approx$ 1.4~GPa and additionally reveal a step-like feature -- magnetic signature of structural dimerization -- that appears at $p_{\rm{c}}$ and shifts to higher temperatures upon further compression. Following the structural study by L. S. I. Veiga et al. [Phys. Rev. B 100, 064104 (2019)], we suggest that a par…
Solid usually becomes harder and tougher under compression, and turns softer at elevated temperature. Recently, compression-induced softening and heating-induced hardening (CISHIH) dual anomaly was predicted in group VB elements such as vanadium. Here, the evidence for this counterintuitive phenomenon is reported. By using accurate high-temperature high-pressure sound velocities measured at Hugoniot states generated by shock-waves, together with first-principles calculations, we observe not only the prominent compression-induced sound velocity reduction, but also strong heating-induced sound v…
Magnetism in lanthanum cobaltite (LCO, LaCoO$_3$) appears to be strongly dependent on strain, defects, and nanostructuring. LCO on strontium titanate (STO, SrTiO$_3$) is a ferromagnet with an interesting strain relaxation mechanism that yields a lattice modulation. However, the driving force of the ferromagnetism is still controversial. Experiments debate between a vacancy-driven or strain-driven mechanism for the ferromagnetism of epitaxial LCO. We found that a weak lateral modulation of the superstructure is sufficient to promote ferromagnetism. We find that ferromagnetism appears under unia…

Equation of state (EOS) for bcc tungsten at 300 K (or 3000 K) up to 1000 GPa (or 300 GPa) was predicted for the first time by solving the partition function via a direct integral approach (DIA) with ab initio calculations of the atoms' interactions. Compared with available experiments under static compressions up to 150 GPa (or 35 GPa) for room temperature (or 1673 K), all the calculated results are within the experimental uncertainty achieved very recently. Furthermore, the same procedure was performed to investigate the shock wave experiments on the EOS up to 400 GPa and 10000 K, and the cal…
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to study the magnetic and ferroelectric properties of Sr$_{1-x}$Ba$_{x}$MnO$_3$, with focus on $x=0.5$, under isotropic volume expansion/compression and biaxial strain. Our results indicate that, unexpectedly, Ba substitution alters the electronic structure in a way that, at fixed lattice parameter, notably enhances the interatomic magnetic exchange interactions. However, increasing Ba-content also causes a volume expansion which tends to weaken these interactions, leading to a net effect of weakly suppressed magnetism, as observed in exper…
From first principles calculations we investigate the electronic structure and the magnetic properties of EuO under hydrostatic and epitaxial forces. There is a complex interdependence of the O 2p and Eu 4f and 5d bands on the magnetism in EuO, and decreasing lattice parameters is an ideal method to increase the Curie temperature, T_c. Compared to hydrostatic pressure, the out-of-plane compensation that is available to epitaxial films influences this increase in T_c, although it is minimized by the small value of poisson's ratio for EuO. We find the semiconducting gap closes at a 6% in-plane l…
