The effect of Fe substitution on Mn sites in the colossal magnetoresistive compounds La0.65Ca0.35Mn1-xFexO3 with 0.01<x<0.1 have been studied. A careful study in the magnetic properties has been carried out by the measurement of ac susceptibility. The temperature range of CMR is greatly broadened with the addition of Fe. Substitution of Fe induces a gradual transition from a metallic ferromagnetic with a high Curie temperature (Tc=270 K) to a ferromagnetic insulator with low Tc=79 K. Increased spin disorder and decrease of Tc with increasing Fe content are evident. The variations in the critical temperature Tc and magnetic moment show a rapid change at about 4-5% Fe. The effect of Fe is seen to be consistent with the disruption of the Mn-Mn exchange possibly due to the formation of magnetic clusters. An extra-ordinary behavior in the out of phase part (x") of ac susceptibility, characterized by double bump (shoulder), was observed around x=0.01 and 0.02. The shoulder in x" disappears at x>0.04 Fe concentration. With increasing Fe concentration the x" peak shift to T<T1/2 (mid point of the transition temperature) and becomes broader. The x" peak moves to 8 or 10 K higher temperature on the application of a dc field, for 3 & 4% samples. We also see increasing low temperature dissipation in more strongly Fe doped samples i.e. increasing the Fe, leads to increased spin disorder and dissipation at low temperature. The effect of the dc field is discussed in terms of the suppression of spin fluctuations close to Tc. The same ionic radii of Fe3+ and Mn3+ cause no structure changes in either series, yet ferromagnetism has been consistently suppressed by Fe doping. Doping with Fe bypasses the usually dominant lattice effects, but depopulate the hopping electrons and thus weakens the double exchange. The results were explained in terms of the formation of magnetic clusters of Fe ions.
The magnetic nature of the B-site dopants controls the magnetic phases in B-site doped manganites RE$_{1-x}$AE$_{x}$Mn$_{1-η}$B$_η$O$_3$. Different B-site dopants of equal valence, doped into the same reference manganite, lead to different magnetic phases at low temperature, which can not be explained using the valence change scenario. We focus on trivalent B-site dopants in CE-CO-OO-I manganites at half-filling $x=0.50$ to study the role of magnetic interactions between the B-site dopants and the neighboring Mn-sites by using a two-orbital double-exchange model including super-exchange intera…
The observation of unusually large ferromagnetism in the nanoparticles of doped oxides and enhanced ferromagnetic tendencies in manganite nanoparticles have been in focus recently. For the transition metal-doped oxide nanoparticles a phenomenological `charge transfer ferromagnetism' model is recently proposed by Coey et al. From a microscopic calculation with charge transfer between the defect band and mixed valent dopants, acting as reservoir, we show how the unusually high ferromagnetic response develops. The puzzle of nanosize-induced ferromagnetic tendencies in manganites is also addressed…
We investigate magnetic excitations in half-doped colossal magnetoresistance manganites. In particular, we focus on spin excitations in the CE phase originally proposed by Goodenough (Phys. Rev. 100, 564 (1955)). Using a localized spin model we calculated magnons for 3D-perovskite compounds such as La$_{1-x}$M$_x$MnO$_3$, where M=Ca,Sr,Ba, and for their 2D-laminar counterparts. We compared them with predictions for the spin excitations corresponding to other phases proposed. For the laminar half-doped manganite La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$, for which magnon measurements by inelastic neutron sca…
By calculating the electronic, orbital, magnetic and lattice structure of half-doped manganites we establish the central role of oxygen buckling caused by the tilting of the MnO$_6$ octahedra -- in essence a steric effect. The buckling itself does not change the Mn-Mn bonds. Instead it drives the system towards an instability where these bonds can dimerize. In presence of electron-electron interactions, this instability can fully develop and beyond a critical buckling a Zener polaron groundstate with dimerized spins, lattice and orbitals forms spontaneously, resulting in a multiferroic state.
We have thoroughly investigated the entire magnetic states of under doped ferromagnetic insulating manganite Nd0.8Sr0.2MnO3 through temperature dependent linear and non linear complex ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. This ferromagnetic insulating manganite is found to have frequency independent ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature at around 140 K. At around 90 K (\approx T_f) the sample shows a second frequency dependent re - entrant magnetic transition as explored through complex ac susceptibility measurements. Non linear ac susceptibility measurements (higher harmonic…
We introduce a microscopic model for electron doped manganites that explains the mechanism of the observed transition from $G$-type antiferromagnetic ($G$-AF) to $C$-type antiferromagnetic ($C$-AF) order under increasing doping by double exchange mechanism. The model unravels the crucial role played by $e_g$ orbital degrees of freedom and explains the observed metal-to-insulator transition by a dimensional crossover at the magnetic phase transition. The specific heat and the spin canting angle found for the $G$-AF phase agree with the experimental findings. As a surprising outcome of the theor…
Orbital Ordering Induced Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations in the Ferromagnetic State of 50 % Hole-doped Manganites: Pr{1/2}Sr{1/2}MnO3 and Nd{1/2}Sr{1/2}MnO3
We show that an interplay of double exchange and impurity randomness can explain the competition between metal-ferromagnetic and insulating charge ordered states in doped manganites. The double exchange is simplified in the Ising type, whereas the randomness is modeled by the Falicov-Kimball binary distribution. The combined model is considered in a framework of dynamical mean-field theory. Using the Kubo-Greenwood formalism, the transport coefficients are explicitly expressed in terms of single particle spectral functions. Dividing the system into two sublattices we have pointed out a direct …
The ground state of half-doped manganites involves intricate spin, charge and orbital orderings, which are difficult to discern experimentally. In this work, we resort to the theoretical analysis of the spin fluctuation spectrum of the half-doped bilayer Pr(Ca$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$)$_2$ Mn$_2$O$_7$ in order to get an insight of its electronic ground state. By means of the linear spin wave approximation, we compute the magnon dispersion for a family of localized spin models, which can describe several phases proposed for the ground state of half-doped manganites, like the intermediate one proposed …
The effect of giant dielectric permittivity due to phase separation accompanied by charged inhomogeneities in low-doped manganites is discussed. The effect appears in the vicinity of the second-order magnetic phase transition and is caused by long-range Coulomb forces. The long-range Coulomb interaction is responsible for the formation of inhomogeneous charged states and determines their characteristic length scales. We derive the phase diagram of the inhomogeneous charged states in the framework of the phenomenological theory of phase transitions. The large value of the static dielectric func…
The apparent contradiction between the recently observed weak charge disproportion and the traditional Mn$^{3+}$/Mn$^{4+}$ picture of the charge-orbital orders in half-doped manganites is resolved by a novel Wannier states analysis of the LDA$+U$ electronic structure. Strong electron itinerancy in this charge-transfer system significantly delocalizes the occupied low-energy "Mn$^{3+}$" Wannier states such that charge leaks into the "Mn$^{4+}$"-sites. Furthermore, the leading mechanisms of the charge order are quantified via our first-principles derivation of the low-energy effective Hamiltonia…
The orbital order-disorder transition temperature (T_OO) versus tolerance factor (t) plot switches from monotonic to non-monotonic beyond a doping level (x) ~ 10 atom% in a family of R(1-x)A(x)MnO3 systems(R = La, Pr, Nd; A = Ca, Sr; x = 0.0-0.2). T_OO reaches maximum at a 'doping-dependent' critical tolerance factor t_C(x) (for 0.1<x<0.2)at which the orthorhombic distortion (D) also maximizes. Such an observation reflects influence of charge carriers on both 'intrinsic' octahedral-site distortion and its bias on the orbital order in doped perovskite manganites and, thus, deviation from what h…
We report an inelastic neutron scattering study of acoustic phonons in the charge and orbitally ordered bilayer manganite LaSr$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$. For excitation energies less than $15\,\rm{meV}$, we observe an abrupt increase (decrease) of the phonon energies (linewidths) of a transverse acoustic phonon branch at $\mathbf{q} = (h, h, 0)$, $h\le0.3$, upon entering the low temperature charge and orbital ordered state ($T_{COO} = 225\,\rm{K}$). This indicates a reduced electron-phonon coupling due to a decrease of electronic states at the Fermi level leading to a partial removal of the Fermi surface…
By means of density-functional simulations for half-doped manganites, such as pseudocubic Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and bilayer PrCa2Mn2O7, we discuss the occurrence of ferroelectricity and we explore its crucial relation to the crystal structure and to peculiar charge/spin/orbital ordering effects. In pseudocubic Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3, ferroelectricity is induced in the Zener polaron type structure, where Mn ions are dimerized. In marked contrast, in bilayer PrCa2Mn2O7, it is the displacements of apical oxygens bonded to either Mn3+ or Mn4+ ions that play a key role in the rising of ferroelectricity. Important…
