Let $(Z_n)$ be a supercritical branching process in a random environment $% ζ$, and $W$ be the limit of the normalized population size $Z_n/\mathbb{E%}(Z_n|ζ)$. We show necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of weighted moments of $W$ of the form $\E W^α\ell(W)$, where $α\geq 1$, $\ell$ is a positive function slowly varying at $\infty$. In the Galton-Watson case, the results improve those of Bingham and Doney (1974).
This paper considers linear functions constructed on two different weighted branching processes and provides explicit bounds for their Kantorovich-Rubinstein distance in terms of couplings of their corresponding generic branching vectors. Motivated by applications to the analysis of random graphs, we also consider a variation of the weighted branching process where the generic branching vector has a different dependence structure from the usual one. By applying the bounds to sequences of weighted branching processes, we derive sufficient conditions for the convergence in the Kantorovich-Rubins…
We study the branching random walk on weighted graphs; site-breeding and edge-breeding branching random walks on graphs are seen as particular cases. We describe the strong critical value in terms of a geometrical parameter of the graph. We characterize the weak critical value and relate it to another geometrical parameter. We prove that, at the strong critical value, the process dies out locally almost surely; while, at the weak critical value, global survival and global extinction are both possible.
We consider the down/up crossing property of weighted Markov branching processes. The joint probability distribution of multi crossing numbers of such processes are obtained. In particular, for Markov branching processes, the probability distribution of death number is given and for bulk-arrival queueing model, the joint probability distributions of service number and arrival number is also given.
We observe the continuous-time Markov Branching Process without high-order moments and allowing Immigration. Limit properties of transition functions and their convergence to invariant measures are investigated. Main mathematical tool is regularly varying generating functions with remainder.
We first derive the recurisions for integer moments of two-type continuous-state branching processes in Lévy random environments. Result shows that the $n$th moment of the process is a polynomial of the initial value of the process with at most $n$ degree. Under some natural condition, the criteria for the existence of $f$-moment of the process are also proved.
For a positive continuous function f satisfying some standard conditions, we study the f-moments of continuous-state branching processes with or without immigration. The main results give criteria for the existence of the f-moments. The characterization of the processes in terms of stochastic equations given by Dawson and Li (2012) plays an essential role in the proofs.
Recursions for moments of multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration are derived. It turns out that the $k$-th (mixed) moments and the $k$-th (mixed) central moments are polynomials of the initial value of the process, and their degree are at most $k$ and $\lfloor k/2 \rfloor$, respectively.
Rooted, weighted continuum random trees are used to describe limits of sequences of random discrete trees. Formally, they are random quadruples $(\mathcal{T},d,r,p)$, where $(\mathcal{T},d)$ is a tree-like metric space, $r\in\mathcal{T}$ is a distinguished root, and $p$ is a probability measure on this space. The underlying branching structure is carried implicitly in the metric $d$. We explore various ways of describing the interaction between branching structure and mass in $(\mathcal{T},d,r,p)$ in a way that depends on $d$ only by way of this branching structure. We introduce a notion of ma…
In this paper we study first-passage percolation in the configuration model with empirical degree distribution that follows a power-law with exponent $τ\in (2,3)$. We assign independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.)\ weights to the edges of the graph. We investigate the weighted distance (the length of the shortest weighted path) between two uniformly chosen vertices, called typical distances. When the underlying age-dependent branching process approximating the local neighborhoods of vertices is found to produce infinitely many individuals in finite time -- called explosive branching p…
In this paper, we give sufficient conditions for a Crump-Mode-Jagers process to be bounded in $L_k$ for a given $k>1$. This result is then applied to a recent random graph process motivated by pairwise collaborations and driven by time-dependent branching dynamics. We show that the maximal degree has the same rate of increase as the degree process of a fixed vertex.
Let $(Z_n)$ be a supercritical branching process in an independent and identically distributed random environment $ξ$. We show the exact decay rate of the probability $\mathbb{P}(Z_n=j | Z_0 = k)$ as $n \to \infty$, for each $j \geq k,$ assuming that $\mathbb{P} (Z_1 = 0) =0$. We also determine the critical value for the existence of harmonic moments of the random variable $W=\lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{Z_n}{\mathbb E (Z_n|ξ)}$ under a simple moment condition.
In O'Connell-Pei(2013) a q-weighted version of the Robinson-Schensted algorithm was introduced. In this paper we show that this algorithm has a symmetry property analogous to the well known symmetry property of the normal Robinson-Schensted algorithm. The proof uses a generalisation of the growth diagram approach introduced by Fomin(1979,1986,1994,1995). This approach, which uses "growth graphs", can also be applied to a wider class of insertion algorithms which have a branching structure, including some of the other q-weighted versions of the Robinson-Schensted algorithm which have recently b…
Let $(Z_{n})$ be a supercritical branching process in a random environment $ξ$, and $W$ be the limit of the normalized population size $Z_{n}/\mathbb{E}[Z_{n}|ξ]$. We show large and moderate deviation principles for the sequence $\log Z_{n}$ (with appropriate normalization). For the proof, we calculate the critical value for the existence of harmonic moments of $W$, and show an equivalence for all the moments of $Z_{n}$. Central limit theorems on $W-W_n$ and $\log Z_n$ are also established.
The asymptotic behavior, as $n\rightarrow \infty $ of the probability of the event that a decomposable critical branching process $\mathbf{Z}(m)=(Z_{1}(m),...,Z_{N}(m)),$ $m=0,1,2,...,$ with $N$ types of particles dies at moment $n$ is investigated and conditional limit theorems are proved describing the distribution of the number of particles in the process $\mathbf{Z}(\cdot)$ at moment $m<n,$ given that the extinction moment of the process is $n$. These limit theorems may be considered as the statements describing the distribution of the number of vertices in the layers of certain classes of…
Let ${Z_{n},n\geq 0} $ be a critical branching process in random environment and let $T$ be its moment of extinction. Under the annealed approach we prove, as $n\to \infty ,$ a limit theorem for the number of particles in the process at moment $n$ given $T=n+1$ and a functional limit theorem for the properly scaled process ${Z_{nt},δ\leq t\leq 1-δ} $ given $T=n+1$ and $δ\in (0,1/2)$.
We consider an indecomposable Galton-Watson branching process with countably infinitely many types. Assuming that the process is critical and allowing for infinite variance of the offspring sizes of some (or all) types of particles we describe the asymptotic behavior of the survival probability of the process and establish a Yaglom-type conditional limit theorem for the infinite-dimensional vector of the number of particles of all types.
Under a first order moment condition on the immigration mechanism, we show that an appropriately scaled supercritical and irreducible multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration (CBI process) converges almost surely. If an $x \log(x)$ moment condition on the branching mechanism does not hold, then the limit is zero. If this $x \log(x)$ moment condition holds, then we prove $L_1$ convergence as well. The projection of the limit on any left non-Perron eigenvector of the branching mean matrix is vanishing. If, in addition, a suitable extra power moment condi…
We study a model for the spread of an infectious disease which incorporates spatial and temporal effects. The model is a delayed multi-type branching process in which types represent geographic regions while infected individuals reproduce offspring during a finite time interval and have convalescence times and random death/recovery outcomes. We give simple expressions for the limit of the geometrically weighted mean evolution of the process.
Consider the continuous-time Markov Branching Process. In critical case we consider a situation when the generating function of intensity of transformation of particles has the infinite second moment, but its tail regularly varies in sense of Karamata. First we discuss limit properties of transition functions of the process. We prove local limit theorems and investigate ergodic properties of the process. Further we investigate limiting probability function conditioned to be never extinct. Hereupon we obtain a new stochastic population process as a continuous-time Markov chain called the Markov…
Infinite sums of i.i.d. random variables discounted by a multiplicative random walk are called perpetuities and have been studied by many authors. The present paper provides a log-type moment result for such random variables under minimal conditions which is then utilized for the study of related moments of a.s. limits of certain martingales associated with the supercritical branching random walk. The connection, first observed by the second author in [Iksanov, A.M. (2004). Elementary fixed points of the BRW smoothing transforms with infinite number of summands. Stoch. Proc. Appl. 114, 27-50.]…
In this paper we introduce a critical curve separating the asymptotic behavior of the moments of the symbiotic branching model, introduced by Etheridge and Fleischmann [Stochastic Process. Appl. 114 (2004) 127--160] into two regimes. Using arguments based on two different dualities and a classical result of Spitzer [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 87 (1958) 187--197] on the exit-time of a planar Brownian motion from a wedge, we prove that the parameter governing the model provides regimes of bounded and exponentially growing moments separated by subexponential growth. The moments turn out to be closel…
Continuous time branching models are used to create random fractals in a Euclidean space, whose Hausdorff dimension is controlled by an input parameter. Finite realizations are applied in modelling the set of sites visited in models of human and animal mobility.
The asymptotic behavior, as $n\rightarrow \infty $ of the conditional distribution of the number of particles in a decomposable critical branching process $\mathbf{Z}% (m)=(Z_{1}(m),...,Z_{N}(m)),$ with $N$ types of particles at moment $m=n-k,\, k=o(n),$ is investigated given that the extinction moment of the process is $n$.
A class of branching processes in varying environments is exhibited which become extinct almost surely even though the means M_n grow fast enough so that sum M_n^{-1} is finite. In fact, such a process is constructed for every offspring distribution of infinite variance, and this establishes the converse of a previously known fact: that if a distribution has finite variance then sum M_n^{-1}=infty is equivalent to almost sure extinction. This has as an immediate consequence the converse to a theorem on equipolarity of Galton-Watson trees.
Chen [Ann. Appl. Probab. {\bf 11} (2001), 1242--1262] derived exact convergence rates in a central limit theorem and a local limit theorem for a supercritical branching Wiener process. We extend Chen's results to a branching random walk under weaker moment conditions. For the branching Wiener process, our results sharpen Chen's by relaxing the second moment condition used by Chen to a moment condition of the form $ \E X (\ln^+X )^{1+λ}< \infty$. In the rate functions that we find for a branching random walk, we figure out some new terms which didn't appear in Chen's work. The results are establi…
We consider the long-time behaviour of a branching random walk in random environment on the lattice $\Z^d$. The migration of particles proceeds according to simple random walk in continuous time, while the medium is given as a random potential of spatially dependent killing/branching rates. The main objects of our interest are the annealed moments $< m_n^p > $, i.e., the $p$-th moments over the medium of the $n$-th moment over the migration and killing/branching, of the local and global population sizes. For $n=1$, this is well-understood \cite{GM98}, as $m_1$ is closely connected with the par…
We study the harmonic moments of Galton-Watson processes, possibly non homogeneous, with positive values. Good estimates of these are needed to compute unbiased estimators for non canonical branching Markov processes, which occur, for instance, in the modeling of the polymerase chain reaction. By convexity, the ratio of the harmonic mean to the mean is at most 1. We prove that, for every square integrable branching mechanisms, this ratio lies between 1-A/k and 1-B/k for every initial population of size k greater than A. The positive constants A and B, such that B is at most A, are explicit and…
We show that the mean inverse populations of nondecreasing, square integrable, continuous-time branching processes decrease to zero like the inverse of their mean population if and only if the initial population $k$ is greater than a first threshold $m_1\ge1$. If, furthermore, $k$ is greater than a second threshold $m_2\ge m_1$, the normalized mean inverse population is at most $1/(k-m_2)$. We express $m_1$ and $m_2$ as explicit functionals of the reproducing distribution, we discuss some analogues for discrete time branching processes and link these results to the behavior of random products …
A general class of non-Markov, supercritical Gaussian branching particle systems is introduced and its long-time asymptotics is studied. Both weak and strong laws of large numbers are developed with the limit object being characterized in terms of particle motion/mutation. Long memory processes, like branching fractional Brownian motion and fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes with large Hurst parameters, as well as rough processes, like fractional processes with with smaller Hurst parameter, are included as important examples. General branching with second moments is allowed and moment mea…
Subcritical catalytic branching random walk on d-dimensional lattice is studied. New theorems concerning the asymptotic behavior of distributions of local particles numbers are established. To prove the results different approaches are used including the connection between fractional moments of random variables and fractional derivatives of their Laplace transforms. In the previous papers on this subject only supercritical and critical regimes were investigated assuming finiteness of the first moment of offspring number and finiteness of the variance of offspring number, respectively. In the p…
In this work we investigate limit theorems for the time-averaged process $\left(\frac{1}{t}\int_0^t X_s^x ds\right)_{t\geq 0}$ where $X^x$ is a subcritical continuous-state branching processes with immigration (CBI processes) starting in $x \geq 0$. Under a second moment condition on the branching and immigration measures we first prove the law of large numbers in $L^2$ and afterward establish the central limit theorem. Assuming additionally that the big jumps of the branching and immigration measures have finite exponential moments of some order, we prove in our main result the large deviatio…
Let $\left\{ Z(t), t\geq 0\right\} $ be a critical Bellman-Harris branching process with finite variance for the offspring size of particles. Assuming that $0<Z(t)\leq φ(t)$, where either $φ(t)=o(t)$ as $t\rightarrow \infty $ or $φ(t)=at,\, a>0$, we study the structure of the process $% \left\{ Z(s,t),0\leq s\leq t\right\} ,$ where $Z(s,t)$ is the number of particles in the process at moment $s$ in the initial process which either survive up to moment $t$ or have a positive offspring number at this moment.
Under a fourth order moment condition on the branching and a second order moment condition on the immigration mechanisms, we show that an appropriately scaled projection of a supercritical and irreducible continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration on certain left non-Perron eigenvectors of the branching mean matrix is asymptotically mixed normal. With an appropriate random scaling, under some conditional probability measure, we prove asymptotic normality as well. In case of a non-trivial process, under a first order moment condition on the immigration mechanism, we…
Let $T$ be the extinction moment of a critical branching process $Z=(Z_{n},n\geq 0) $ in a random environment specified by iid probability generating functions. We study the asymptotic behavior of the probability of extinction of the process $Z$ at moment $n\to \infty$, and show that if the logarithm of the (random) expectation of the offspring number belongs to the domain of attraction of a non-gaussian stable law then the extinction occurs owing to very unfavorable environment forcing the process, having at moment $T-1$ exponentially large population, to die out. We also give an interpretati…
We study the limiting occupation density process for a large number of critical and driftless branching random walks. We show that the rescaled occupation densities of $\lfloor sN\rfloor$ branching random walks, viewed as a function-valued, increasing process $\{g_{s}^{N}\}_{s\ge 0}$, converges weakly to a pure jump process in the Skorohod space $\mathbb D([0, +\infty), \mathcal C_{0}(\mathbb R))$, as $N\to\infty$. Moreover, the jumps of the limiting process consist of i.i.d. copies of an Integrated super-Brownian Excursion (ISE) density, rescaled and weighted by the jump sizes in a real-value…
Lévy-type perpetuities being the a.s. limits of particular generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes are a natural continuous-time generalization of discrete-time perpetuities. These are random variables of the form $S:=\int_{[0,\infty)}e^{-X_{s-}}{\mathrm{d}}Z_s$, where $(X,Z)$ is a two-dimensional Lévy process, and $Z$ is a drift-free Lévy process of bounded variation. We prove an ultimate criterion for the finiteness of power moments of $S$. This result and the previously known assertion due to Erickson and Maller (2005) concerning the a.s. finiteness of $S$ are then used to derive ultimate …
We study a continuous-time branching random walk on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$, $d\in \mathbb{N}$, with a single source of branching, that is the lattice point where the birth and death of particles can occur. The random walk is assumed to be homogeneous, symmetric and irreducible but, in contrast to previous investigations, the random walk transition intensities $a(x,y)$ decrease as $|y-x|^{-(d+α)}$ for $|y-x|\to \infty$, where $α\in(0,2)$, that leads to an infinite variance of the random walk jumps. The~mechanism of the birth and death of particles at the source is governed by a continuous…
A critical branching process with immigration which evolve in a random environment is considered. Assuming that immigration is not allowed when there are no individuals in the aboriginal population we investigate the tail distribution of the so-called life period of the process, i.e., the length of the time interval between the moment when the process is initiated by a positive number of particles and the moment when there are no individuals in the population for the first time.
We study a discrete time multitype branching random walk on a finite space with finite set of types. Particles follow a Markov chain on the spatial space whereas offspring distributions are given by a random field that is fixed throughout the evolution of the particles. Our main interest lies in the averaged (annealed) expectation of the population size, and its long-time asymptotics. We first derive, for fixed time, a formula for the expected population size with fixed offspring distributions, which is reminiscent of a Feynman-Kac formula. We choose Weibull-type distributions with parameter $…
We consider subcritical branching processes with immigration which evolve under the influence of a random environment and study the tail distribution of life periods of such processes defined as the length of the time interval between the moment when first invader (or invaders) came to an empty site until the moment when the site becomes empty again. We prove that the tail distribution decays with exponential rate. The main tools are the change of measure and some conditional limit theorems for random walks.
We show the existence of superprocesses in a random medium with location dependent branching. Technically, we make use of a duality relation to establish the uniqueness of the martingale problem and to obtain the moment formulas.
For the critical branching random walk in $\mathbb{Z}^{4}$ with branching at the origin only we find the asymptotic behavior of the probability of the event that there are particles at the origin at moment $t\rightarrow \infty $ and prove a Yaglom type conditional limit theorem for the number of individuals at the origin given that there are particles at the origin.
We determine, to within O(1), the expected minimal position at level n in certain branching random walks. The walks under consideration have displacement vector (v_1,v_2,...), where each v_j is the sum of j independent Exponential(1) random variables and the different v_i need not be independent. In particular, our analysis applies to the Poisson-Dirichlet branching random walk and to the Poisson-weighted infinite tree. As a corollary, we also determine the expected height of a random recursive tree to within O(1).
We consider a supercritical branching Lévy process on the real line. Under mild moment assumptions on the number of offspring and their displacements, we prove a second-order limit theorem on the empirical mean position.
Let $(Z_n)$ be a supercritical branching process in a random environment $ξ$. We study the convergence rates of the martingale $W_n = Z_n/ E[Z_n| ξ]$ to its limit $W$. The following results about the convergence almost sur (a.s.), in law or in probability, are shown. (1) Under a moment condition of order $p\in (1,2)$, $W-W_n = o (e^{-na})$ a.s. for some $a>0$ that we find explicitly; assuming only $EW_1 \log W_1^{α+1} < \infty$ for some $α>0$, we have $W-W_n = o (n^{-α})$ a.s.; similar conclusions hold for a branching process in a varying environment. (2) Under a second moment condition, there…
A subcritical branching process in random environment (BPRE) is considered whose associated random walk does not satisfy the Cramer condition. The asymptotics for the survival probability of the process is investigated, and a Yaglom type conditional limit theorem is proved for the number of particles up to moment $n$ given survival to this moment. Contrary to other types of subcritical BPRE, the limiting distribution is not discrete. We also show that the process survives for a long time owing to a single big jump of the associate random walk accompanied by a population explosion at the beginn…
We consider the time evolution of a lattice branching random walk with local perturbations. Under certain conditions, we prove the Carleman type estimation for the moments of a particle subpopulation number and show the existence of a steady state.
In several examples, dualities for interacting diffusion and particle systems permit the study of the longtime behavior of solutions. A particularly difficult model in which many techniques collapse is a two-type model with mutually catalytic interaction introduced by Dawson/Perkins for which they proved under some assumptions a dichotomy between extinction and coexistence directly from the defining equations. In the present article we show how to prove a precise dichotomy for a related model with negatively correlated noises. The proof uses moment bounds on exit-times of correlated Brownian m…
