A general mean field theory is presented for the construction of equilibrium coarse grained models. Inverse methods that reconstruct microscopic models from low resolution experimental data can be derived as particular implementations of this theory. The theory also applies to the opposite problem of reduction, where relevant information is extracted from available equilibrium ensemble data. These problems are central to the construction of coarse grained representations of complex systems, and commonly used coarse graining methods are derived as particular cases of the general theory.
By different coarse-graining procedures we derive lower bounds on the total mean work dissipated in Brownian systems driven out of equilibrium. With several analytically solvable examples we illustrate how, when, and where the information on the dissipation is captured.
We present a computer-assisted approach to coarse-graining the evolutionary dynamics of a system of nonidentical oscillators coupled through a (fixed) network structure. The existence of a spectral gap for the coupling network graph Laplacian suggests that the graph dynamics may quickly become low-dimensional. Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) is now a well-established method for simulating soft matter systems. However, its applicability was recently questioned because some investigations showed an upper coarse-graining limit that would prevent the applicability of the method to the whole mesoscopic range. This article aims to reestablish DPD as a truly scale-free method by analyzing the problems reported by other authors and by presenting a scaling scheme that allows one to gauge a DPD-simulation to any desired length scale.
We address aspects of coarse-graining in classical Statistical Physics from the viewpoint of the symplectic non-squeezing theorem. We make some comments regarding the implications of the symplectic non-squeezing theorem for the BBGKY hierarchy. We also see the cubic cells appearing in coarse-graining as a direct consequence of the uniqueness of Hofer's metric on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the phase space.

Many biological systems can be described by finite Markov models. A general method for simplifying master equations is presented that is based on merging adjacent states. The approach preserves the steady-state probability distribution and all steady-state fluxes except the one between the merged states. With the guidance offered by nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamics, simulation techniques are elevated from brute-force computer experiments to systematic tools for extracting complete, redundancy-free and consistent coarse grained information for dynamic systems. We sketch the role and potential of Monte Carlo, molecular dynamics and Brownian dynamics simulations in the thermodynamic approach to coarse graining. A melt of entangled linear polyethylene molecules serves us as an illustrative example.
Lumping a Markov process introduces a coarser level of description that is useful in many contexts and applications. The dynamics on the coarse grained states is often approximated by its Markovian component. In this letter we derive finite-time bounds on the error in this approximation. We explain a method, inspired by control theory model reduction and interpolation theory, that rigorously establishes the types of coarse graining that are appropriate for systems with quadratic, generalized Hamiltonians. For such systems, general conditions are given that establish when local coarse grainings should be valid. A careful derivation of the generalized Langevin equation using "Zwanzig flavor" projection operator formalism is presented. We provide arguments why this formalism has better properties compared to alternative projection-operator formalisms for deriving non-equilibrium, non-thermodynamic-limit, equations. The two main ingredients in the derivation are Liouville's theorem and optimal prediction theory. We show how to coarse grain polymers in a good solvent as single particles, interacting with density-independent or density-dependent interactions. These interactions can be between the centres of mass, the mid-points or end-points of the polymers. We also show how to extend these methods to polymers in poor solvents and mixtures of polymers. Treating polymers as soft colloids can greatly speed up the simulation of complex many-polymer systems, including polymer-colloid mixtures.
In studying the predictability of emergent phenomena in complex systems, Israeli & Goldenfeld (Phys. Rev. Lett., 2004; Phys. Rev. This paper shows an estimation of a lower bound on the total entropy production rate(EPR) for a system following Langevin dynamics with a single observed variable coarse-grained into a few discrete states, by invoking the underlying broken time-reversal symmetry. We estimate the irreversibility in waiting time distributions of the partially observed system and find the effect of spatial resolution on the mean dwell-time asymmetry and the EPR.

We study the evolution under their self-gravity of infinite ``shuffled lattice'' particle distributions, focussing specifically on the comparison of this evolution with that of ``daughter'' particle distributions, defined by a simple coarse-graining procedure. We consider both the case that such coarse-grainings are performed (i) on the initial conditions, and (ii) at a finite time with a specific additional prescription. We compare the fluctuation relations for work and entropy in underdamped and overdamped systems, when the friction coefficient of the medium is space-dependent. We find that these relations remain unaffected in both cases. However, for the overdamped system, the analysis is more involved, and a blind application of normal rules of calculus would lead to inconsistent results.
Recently, some general relations have been studied in nonequilibrium mesoscopic systems. In particular, the thermodynamic uncertainty relation (TUR) provides a universal internal relation among the cumulants of currents and the entropy production. In this paper, we give a simple derivation of TUR for thermally fluctuating particle current in a tilted periodic potential from a coarse grained point of view with the use of the transition probabilities. Also, we explore the condition for the bound of TUR to monotonically increase with the affinity.

We propose a new approach for analyzing price fluctuations in their strongly correlated regime ranging from minutes to months. This is done by employing a self-similarity assumption for the magnitude of coarse-grained price fluctuation or volatility. The existence of a Cramer function, the characteristic function for self-similarity, is confirmed by analyzing real price data from a stock market. We also discuss the close interrelation among our approach, the scaling-of-moments method and the multifractal approach for price fluctuations.
A procedure suggested by Vvedensky for obtaining continuum equations as the coarse-grained limit of discrete models is applied to the restricted solid-on-solid model with both adsorption and desorption. We study the large time fluctuations of entropy production in Markov processes. In particular, we consider the effect of a coarse-graining procedure which decimates {\em fast states} with respect to a given time threshold. Using molecular simulation, we determine Ginzburg-Landau free energy functions for molecular fluids. To this aim, we extend the Expanded Wang-Landau method to calculate the partition functions, number distributions and Landau free energies for $Ar$, $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. We then parametrize a coarse-grained free energy function of the density order parameter and assess the performance of this free energy function on its ability to model the onset of criticality in these systems. We develop an algorithmic, system-specific renormalization group (RG) procedure that is adapted from model reductions techniques from engineering control theory. The resulting "generalized" RG is a consistent generalization of the Wilsonian RG. We apply the generalized RG to a phi 4-field theory. By considering nonequilibrium in addition to equilibrium observables, we find that naive power counting break down. Additionally, a large class of short-wavelength perturbations can drive the system away from both the Gaussian and Wilson-Fisher fixed points.

This method provides an accurate but low computational cost technique for studying both classical and quantum lattice models in two- or three-dimensions.
