In studying the predictability of emergent phenomena in complex systems, Israeli & Goldenfeld (Phys. Rev. Lett., 2004; Phys. Rev. E, 2006) showed how to coarse-grain (elementary) cellular automata (CA). Their algorithm for finding coarse-grainings of supercell size $N$ took doubly-exponential $2^{2^N}$-time, and thus only allowed them to explore supercell sizes $N \leq 4$. Here we introduce a new, more efficient algorithm for finding coarse-grainings between any two given CA that allows us to systematically explore all elementary CA with supercell sizes up to $N=7$, and to explore individual examples of even larger supercell size. Our algorithm is based on a backtracking search, similar to the DPLL algorithm with unit propagation for the NP-complete problem of Boolean Satisfiability.
Partitioned cellular automata are known to be an useful tool to simulate linear and nonlinear problems in physics, specially because they allow for a straightforward way to define conserved quantities and reversible dynamics. Here we show how to construct a local coarse graining description of partitioned cellular automata. By making use of this tool we investigate the effective dynamics in this model of computation. All examples explored are in the scenario of lattice gases, so that the information lost after the coarse graining is related to the number of particles. It becomes apparent how d…

In this paper, we look at two ways to implement determinisitic one dimensional cellular automata into hyperbolic cellular automata in three contexts: the pentagrid, the heptagrid and the dodecagrid, these tilings being classically denoted by $\{5,4\}$, $\{7,3\}$ and $\{5,3,4\}$ respectively.
In this paper we study updating effects on cellular automata rule space. We consider a subset of 6144 order-3 automata from the space of 262144 bi-dimensional outer-totalistic rules. We compare synchronous to asynchronous and sequential updatings. Focusing on two automata, we discuss how update changes destroy typical structures of these rules. Besides, we show that the first-order phase-transition in the multiverse of synchronous cellular automata, revealed with the use of a recently introduced control parameter, seems to be robust not only to changes in update schema but also to different in…
A general family of $D$-dimensional, $K$-state cellular automata is proposed where the update rule is sequentially applied in each dimension. This includes the Biham--Middleton--Levine traffic model, which is a 2D cellular automaton with 3 states. Using computer simulations, we discover new properties of intermediate states for the BML model. We present some new 2D, 3-state cellular automata belonging to this family with application to percolation, annealing, biological membranes, and more. Many of these models exhibit sharp phase transitions, self organization, and interesting patterns.
In this paper, we present the simulation of a simple, yet significantly powerful, sequential model by cellular automata. The simulated model is called oblivious multi-head one-way finite automata and is characterized by having its heads moving only forward, on a trajectory that only depends on the length of the input. While the original finite automaton works in linear time, its corresponding cellular automaton performs the same task in real time, that is, exactly the length of the input. Although not truly a speed-up, the simulation may be interesting and reminds us of the open question about…
Two simple Cellular Automata, which mimic the Collatz-Ulam iterated map (3x+1 map), are introduced. These Cellular Automata allow to test efficiently the Collatz conjecture for very large numbers.
Bijections between sets may be seen as discrete (or crisp) unitary transformations used in quantum computations. So discrete quantum cellular automata are cellular automata with reversible transition functions. This note studies on 1d reversible cellular automata with triplet local rules.
We define and study a few properties of a class of random automata networks. While regular finite one-dimensional cellular automata are defined on periodic lattices, these automata networks, called randomized cellular automata, are defined on random directed graphs with constant out-degrees and evolve according to cellular automaton rules. For some families of rules, a few typical a priori unexpected results are presented.
We investigate expressiveness, a parameter of one-dimensional cellular automata, in the context of simulated biological systems. The development of elementary cellular automata is interpreted in terms of biological systems, and biologically inspired parameters for biodiversity are applied to the configurations of cellular automata. This article contains a survey of the Elementary Cellular Automata in terms of their expressiveness and an evaluation whether expressiveness is a meaningful term in the context of simulated biology.
In this paper we present two interesting properties of stochastic cellular automata that can be helpful in analyzing the dynamical behavior of such automata. The first property allows for calculating cell-wise probability distributions over the state set of a stochastic cellular automaton, i.e. images that show the average state of each cell during the evolution of the stochastic cellular automaton. The second property shows that stochastic cellular automata are equivalent to so-called stochastic mixtures of deterministic cellular automata. Based on this property, any stochastic cellular autom…
Cellular automata are both computational and dynamical systems. We give a complete classification of the dynamic behaviour of elementary cellular automata (ECA) in terms of fundamental dynamic system notions such as sensitivity and chaoticity. The "complex" ECA emerge to be sensitive, but not chaotic and not eventually weakly periodic. Based on this classification, we conjecture that elementary cellular automata capable of carrying out complex computations, such as needed for Turing-universality, are at the "edge of chaos".
This paper proposes several algorithms and their Cellular Automata Machine (CAM) for drawing the State Transition Diagram (STD) of an arbitrary Cellular Automata (CA) Rule (any neighborhood, uniform/ hybrid and null/ periodic boundary) and length of the CA n. It also discusses the novelty, hardware cost and the complexities of these algorithms.
We apply the methods of lattice field theories to the quantization of cellular automata. We discuss the quantization of five main categories of cellular automata: bosonic, fermionic, supersymmetric, spin and quantum dot using path integral and operator formalisms of lattice field theories. We show that the quantization of supersymmetric cellular automata is related to recently discussed string bit models of Thorn and Bergman and represents a link of cellular automata theory to fundamental physics. We discuss spin and quantum dot cellular automata for their importance in experimental realizatio…
We present an intuitive formalism for implementing cellular automata on arbitrary topologies. By that means, we identify a symmetry operation in the class of elementary cellular automata. Moreover, we determine the subset of topologically sensitive elementary cellular automata and find that the overall number of complex patterns decreases under increasing neighborhood size in regular graphs. As exemplary applications, we apply the formalism to complex networks and compare the potential of scale-free graphs and metabolic networks to generate complex dynamics.
Many natural processes occur over characteristic spatial and temporal scales. This paper presents tools for (i) flexibly and scalably coarse-graining cellular automata and (ii) identifying which coarse-grainings express an automaton's dynamics well, and which express its dynamics badly. We apply the tools to investigate a range of examples in Conway's Game of Life and Hopfield networks and demonstrate that they capture some basic intuitions about emergent processes. Finally, we formalize the notion that a process is emergent if it is better expressed at a coarser granularity.
To identify potential universal cellular automata, a method is developed to measure information processing capacity of elementary cellular automata. We consider two features of cellular automata: Ability to store information, and ability to process information. We define local collections of cells as particles of cellular automata and consider information contained by particles. By using this method, information channels and channels' intersections can be shown. By observing these two features, potential universal cellular automata are classified into a certain class, and all elementary cellul…
In this paper, we look at the possibility to implement the algorithm to construct a discrete line devised by the first author in cellular automata. It turns out that such an implementation is feasible.
Linear acceleration theorems are known for most computational models. Although such results have been proved for two-dimensional cellular automata working on specific neighborhoods, no general construction was known. We present here a technique of linear acceleration for all two-dimensional languages recognized by cellular automata working on complete neighborhoods.
Cellular Automata(CA) is a discrete computing model which provides simple, flexible and efficient platform for simulating complicated systems and performing complex computation based on the neighborhoods information. CA consists of two components 1) a set of cells and 2) a set of rules . Programmable Cellular Automata(PCA) employs some control signals on a Cellular Automata(CA) structure. Programmable Cellular Automata were successfully applied for simulation of biological systems, physical systems and recently to design parallel and distributed algorithms for solving task density and synchron…
Gauge-invariance is a fundamental concept in Physics -- known to provide mathematical justification for the fundamental forces. In this paper, we provide discrete counterparts to the main gauge theoretical concepts directly in terms of Cellular Automata. More precisely, the notions of gauge-invariance and gauge-equivalence in Cellular Automata are formalized. A step-by-step gauging procedure to enforce this symmetry upon a given Cellular Automaton is developed, and three examples of gauge-invariant Cellular Automata are examined.
While for synchronous deterministic cellular automata there is an accepted definition of reversibility, the situation is less clear for asynchronous cellular automata. We first discuss a few possibilities and then investigate what we call phase space invertible asynchronous cellular automata in more detail. We will show that for each Turing machine there is such a cellular automaton simulating it, and that it is decidable whether an asynchronous cellular automaton has this property or not, even in higher dimensions.
A cellular automaton with $n$ states may be used for construction of reversible second-order cellular automaton with $n^2$ states. Reversible cellular automata with hidden parameters discussed in this paper are generalization of such construction and may have number of states $N=n m$ with arbitrary $m$. Further modification produces reversible cellular automata with reduced number of states $N' < N = n m$.
We show that, for a fairly large class of reversible, one-dimensional cellular automata, the set of additive invariants exhibits an algebraic structure. More precisely, if $f$ and $g$ are one-dimensional, reversible cellular automata of the kind considered by Takesue, we show that there is a binary operation on these automata $\vee$ such that $ψ(f)\subseteq ψ(f\vee g)$, where $ψ(f)$ denotes the set of additive invariants of $f$ and $\subseteq$ denotes the inclusion relation between real subspaces.
We overview and compare classifications of elementary cellular automata, including Wolfram's, Wuensche's, Li and Packard, communication complexity, power spectral, topological, surface, compression, lattices, and morphological diversity classifications. This paper summarises several classifications of elementary cellular automata (ECA) and compares them with a newly proposed one, that induced by endowing rules with memory.
Complexity has been a recurrent research topic in cellular automata because they represent systems where complex behaviors emerge from simple local interactions. A significant amount of previous research has been conducted proposing instances of complex cellular automata; however, most of the proposed methods are based on a careful search or a meticulous construction of evolution rules. This paper presents the emergence of complex behaviors based on reversible cellular automata. In particular, this paper shows that reversible cellular automata represent an adequate framework to obtain complex …
In this article, I propose a systematic method for the inverse ultra-discretization of cell automata using a functionally complete operation. We derive difference equations for the 256 kinds of elementary cellular automata(ECA) introduced Wolfram\cite{wolfram} by the proposed means of the inverse ultra-discretization. We show that the behaviors of ECAs can be completely reproduced by numerically solving the obtained difference equations.
In this paper, we construct a strongly universal cellular automaton on the line with 11 states and the standard neighbourhood. We embed this construction into several tilings of the hyperbolic plane and of the hyperbolic 3D space giving rise to strongly universal cellular automata with 10 states.
We show that a large number of elementary cellular automata are computationally simple. This work is the first systematic classification of elementary cellular automata based on a formal notion of computational complexity. Thanks to the generality of communication complexity, the perspectives of our method include its application to other natural systems such as neural networks and gene regulatory networks.
Research on asynchronous cellular automata has received a great amount of attention these last years and has turned to a thriving field. We survey the recent research that has been carried out on this topic and present a wide state of the art where computing and modelling issues are both represented.
It is shown that for the N-neighbor and K-state cellular automata, the class II, class III and class IV patterns coexist at least in the range $\frac{1}{K} \le λ\le 1-\frac{1}{K} $. The mechanism which determines the difference between the pattern classes at a fixed $λ$ is found, and it is studied quantitatively by introducing a new parameter $F$. Using the parameter F and $λ$, the phase diagram of cellular automata is obtained for 5-neighbor and 4-state cellular automata. PACS: 89.75.-k Complex Systems
We Propose A Novel Automaton Model which uses Arithmetic Operations as the Evolving Rules, each cell has the states of the Natural Numbers k = (N), a radius of r = 1/2 and operates on an arbitrary input size. The Automaton reads an Arithmetic Expression as an input and outputs another Arithmetic Expression. In Addition, we simulate a variety of One Dimensional Cellular Automata Structures with different Dynamics including Elementary Cellular Automata.
The classical dynamical systems model of continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR) in which a first order chemical reaction takes place is reformulated in terms of stochastic cellular automata by extending previous works of Seyborg (1997) and Neuforth (2000) by including the feed flow of chemical reactants. We show that this cellular automata procedure is able to simulate the dilution rate and the mixing process in the CSTR, as well as the details of the heat removal due to the jacket. The cellular automata approach is expected to be of considerable applicability at any industrial scales and esp…
In this article we give a new definition of some analog of Lyapunov exponents for cellular automata . Then for a shift ergodic and cellular automaton invariant probability measure we establish an inequality between the entropy of the automaton, the entropy of the shift and the Lyapunov exponent.
We define a new transfinite time model of computation, infinite time cellular automata. The model is shown to be as powerful than infinite time Turing machines, both on finite and infinite inputs; thus inheriting many of its properties. We then show how to simulate the canonical real computation model, BSS machines, with infinite time cellular automata in exactly ωsteps.
We propose a method for deriving networks from one-dimensional binary cellular automata. The derived networks are usually directed and have structural properties corresponding to the dynamical behaviors of their cellular automata. Network parameters, particularly the efficiency and the degree distribution, show that the dependence of efficiency on the grid size is characteristic and can be used to classify cellular automata and that derived networks exhibit various degree distributions. In particular, a class IV rule of Wolfram's classification produces a network having a scale-free distributi…
The emerging field of Nominal Computation Theory is concerned with the theory of Nominal Sets and its applications to Computer Science. We investigate here the impact of nominal sets on the definition of Cellular Automata and on their computational capabilities, with a special focus on the emergent behavioural properties of this new model and their significance in the context of computation-oriented interpretations of physical phenomena. A preliminary investigation of the relations between Nominal Cellular Automata and Wolfram's Elementary Cellular Automata is also carried out.
In this work we introduce a deterministic scheme of synchronization of linear and nonlinear cellular automata (CA) with complex behavior, connected through a master-slave coupling. By using a definition of Boolean derivative, we use the linear approximation of the automata to determine a function of coupling that promotes synchronization without perturbing all the sites of the slave system.
It is speculated that there is a relationship between 1/f noise and computational universality in cellular automata. We use genetic algorithms to search for one-dimensional and two-state, five-neighbor cellular automata which have 1/f-type spectrum. A power spectrum is calculated from the evolution starting from a random initial configuration. The fitness is estimated from the power spectrum in consideration of the similarity to 1/f-type spectrum. The result shows that the rule with the highest average fitness has a propagating structure like other computationally universal cellular automata, …
We demonstrate that the concept of a conservation law can be naturally extended from deterministic to probabilistic cellular automata (PCA) rules. The local function for conservative PCA must satisfy conditions analogous to conservation conditions for deterministic cellular automata. Conservation condition for PCA can also be written in the form of a current conservation law. For deterministic nearest-neighbour CA the current can be computed exactly. Local structure approximation can partially predict the equilibrium current for non-deterministic cases. For linear segments of the fundamental d…
A small-world cellular automaton network has been formulated to simulate the long-range interactions of complex networks using unconventional computing methods in this paper. Conventional cellular automata use local updating rules. The new type of cellular automata networks uses local rules with a fraction of long-range shortcuts derived from the properties of small-world networks. Simulations show that the self-organized criticality emerges naturally in the system for a given probability of shortcuts and transition occurs as the probability increases to some critical value indicating the smal…
We study sources of isomorphisms of additive cellular automata on finite groups (called index-group). It is shown that many isomorphisms (called regular) of automata are reducible to the isomorphisms of underlying algebraic structures (such as the index-group, monoid of automata rules, and its subgroup of reversible elements). However for some groups there exist not regular automata isomorphisms. A complete description of linear automorphisms of the monoid is obtained. These automorphisms cover the most part of all automata isomorphisms for small groups and are represented by reversible matric…
Cellular automata are discrete dynamical systems and a model of computation. The limit set of a cellular automaton consists of the configurations having an infinite sequence of preimages. It is well known that these always contain a computable point and that any non-trivial property on them is undecidable. We go one step further in this article by giving a full characterization of the sets of Turing degrees of cellular automata: they are the same as the sets of Turing degrees of effectively closed sets containing a computable point.
We study the set of strictly periodic points in surjective cellular automata, i.e., the set of those configurations which are temporally periodic for a given automaton but they not spatially periodic. This set turns out to be dense for almost equicontinuous surjective cellular automata while it is empty for the positively expansive ones. In the class of additive cellular automata, the set of strictly periodic points can be either dense or empty. The latter happens if and only if the cellular automaton is topologically transitive.

Emergent processes in complex systems such as cellular automata can perform computations of increasing complexity, and could possibly lead to artificial evolution. Such a feat would require scaling up current simulation sizes to allow for enough computational capacity. Understanding complex computations happening in cellular automata and other systems capable of emergence poses many challenges, especially in large-scale systems. We propose methods for coarse-graining cellular automata based on frequency analysis of cell states, clustering and autoencoders. These innovative techniques facilitat…
We prove that there do not exist positively expansive cellular automata defined on the full k-ary tree shift (for k>=2). Moreover, we investigate some topological properties of these automata and their relationships, namely permutivity, surjectivity, preinjectivity, right-closingness and openness.
We compare several definitions for number-conserving cellular automata that we prove to be equivalent. A necessary and sufficient condition for \cas to be number-conserving is proved. Using this condition, we give a linear-time algorithm to decide number-conservation. The dynamical behavior of number-conserving \cas is studied and a classification that focuses on chaoticity is given.
In this paper, we investigate the halting problem for deterministic cellula automata in the pentagrid. We prove that the problem is decidable when the cellular automaton starts its computation from a finite configuration and when it has at most two states, one of them being a quiescent state.
