We show that, for a fairly large class of reversible, one-dimensional cellular automata, the set of additive invariants exhibits an algebraic structure. More precisely, if $f$ and $g$ are one-dimensional, reversible cellular automata of the kind considered by Takesue, we show that there is a binary operation on these automata $\vee$ such that $ψ(f)\subseteq ψ(f\vee g)$, where $ψ(f)$ denotes the set of additive invariants of $f$ and $\subseteq$ denotes the inclusion relation between real subspaces.
Evidence and results suggesting that a Noether--like theorem for conservation laws in 1D RCA can be obtained. Unlike Noether's theorem, the connection here is to the maximal congruences rather than the automorphisms of the local dynamics. We take the results of Takesue and Hattori (1992) on the space of additive conservation laws in one dimensional cellular automata. In reversible automata, we show that conservation laws correspond to the null spaces of certain well-structured matrices. It is shown that a class of conservation laws exist that correspond to the maximal congruences of index 2. I…
Bijections between sets may be seen as discrete (or crisp) unitary transformations used in quantum computations. So discrete quantum cellular automata are cellular automata with reversible transition functions. This note studies on 1d reversible cellular automata with triplet local rules.
A novel two-state, Reversible Cellular Automata (RCA) is described. This three-dimensional RCA is shown to be capable of universal computation. Additionally, evidence is offered that this RCA Is capable of universal construction.
A cellular automaton with $n$ states may be used for construction of reversible second-order cellular automaton with $n^2$ states. Reversible cellular automata with hidden parameters discussed in this paper are generalization of such construction and may have number of states $N=n m$ with arbitrary $m$. Further modification produces reversible cellular automata with reduced number of states $N' < N = n m$.
Complexity has been a recurrent research topic in cellular automata because they represent systems where complex behaviors emerge from simple local interactions. A significant amount of previous research has been conducted proposing instances of complex cellular automata; however, most of the proposed methods are based on a careful search or a meticulous construction of evolution rules. This paper presents the emergence of complex behaviors based on reversible cellular automata. In particular, this paper shows that reversible cellular automata represent an adequate framework to obtain complex …
We study sources of isomorphisms of additive cellular automata on finite groups (called index-group). It is shown that many isomorphisms (called regular) of automata are reducible to the isomorphisms of underlying algebraic structures (such as the index-group, monoid of automata rules, and its subgroup of reversible elements). However for some groups there exist not regular automata isomorphisms. A complete description of linear automorphisms of the monoid is obtained. These automorphisms cover the most part of all automata isomorphisms for small groups and are represented by reversible matric…
Several cellular automata (CA) models have been developed to simulate self-organization of multiple levels of structures. However, they do not obey microscopic reversibility and conservation laws. In this paper, we describe the construction of a reversible lattice molecular automata (RLMA) model, which simulates molecular interaction and self-organization of higher-order structures. The model's strict reversibility entails physically relevant conservation laws, and thus opens a way to precise application and validation of the methods from statistical physics in studying the necessary condition…
We consider the problem of computing the Lyapunov exponents of reversible cellular automata (CA). We show that the class of reversible CA with right Lyapunov exponent $2$ cannot be separated algorithmically from the class of reversible CA whose right Lyapunov exponents are at most $2-δ$ for some absolute constant $δ>0$. Therefore there is no algorithm that, given as an input a description of an arbitrary reversible CA $F$ and a positive rational number $ε>0$, outputs the Lyapunov exponents of $F$ with accuracy $ε$. We also compute the average Lyapunov exponents (with respect to the uniform mea…
Recursive equations for the number of cells with nonzero values at $n$-th step for some two-dimensional reversible second-order cellular automata are proved in this work. Initial configuration is a single cell with the value one and all others zero.
We consider reversible and surjective cellular automata perturbed with noise. We show that, in the presence of positive additive noise, the cellular automaton forgets all the information regarding its initial configuration exponentially fast. In particular, the state of a finite collection of cells with diameter n becomes indistinguishable from pure noise after O(log n) time steps. This highlights the seemingly unavoidable need for irreversibility in order to perform scalable reliable computation in the presence of noise.
We study one-dimensional reversible and number-conserving cellular automata (RNCCA) that have both properties of reversibility and number-conservation. In the case of 2-neighbor RNCCA, García-Ramos proved that every RNCCA shows trivial behavior in the sense that all the signals in the RNCCA do not interact each other. However, if we increase the neighborhood size, we can find many complex RNCCAs. Here, we show that for any one-dimensional 2-neighbor reversible partitioned CA (RPCA) with s states, we can construct a 4-neighbor RNCCA with 4s states that simulates the former. Since it is known th…
Cellular automata (CA) have been found as an attractive modeling tool for various applications, such as, pattern recognition, image processing, data compression, encryption, and specially for VLSI design & test. For such applications, mostly a special class of CA, called as linear/additive CA, have been utilized. Since linear/additive CA refer a limited number of candidate CA, while searching for solution to a problem, the best result may not be expected. The nonlinear CA can be a better alternative to linear/additive CA for achieving desired solutions in different applications. However, the n…
A two-state, three-dimensional, deterministic, reversible cellular automaton is shown to be capable of approximately circular orbits, wavelike undulations, and particle-like configurations that decay in accordance with a half-life law.
We introduce a pair of time-reversible models defined on the discrete space-time lattice with 3 states per site, specifically, a vacancy and a particle of two flavours (species). The local update rules reproduce the rule 54 reversible cellular automaton when only a single species of particles is present, and satisfy the requirements of flavour exchange (C), space-reversal (P), and time-reversal (T) symmetries. We find closed-form expressions for three local conserved charges and provide an explicit matrix product form of the grand canonical Gibbs states, which are identical for both models. Fo…
Partitioned cellular automata are known to be an useful tool to simulate linear and nonlinear problems in physics, specially because they allow for a straightforward way to define conserved quantities and reversible dynamics. Here we show how to construct a local coarse graining description of partitioned cellular automata. By making use of this tool we investigate the effective dynamics in this model of computation. All examples explored are in the scenario of lattice gases, so that the information lost after the coarse graining is related to the number of particles. It becomes apparent how d…
In recent work [quant-ph/0405174] by Schumacher and Werner was discussed an abstract algebraic approach to a model of reversible quantum cellular automata (CA) on a lattice. It was used special model of CA based on partitioning scheme and so there is a question about quantum CA derived from more general, standard model of classical CA. In present work is considered an approach to definition of a scheme with "history", valid for quantization both irreversible and reversible classical CA directly using local transition rules. It is used language of vectors in Hilbert spaces instead of C*-algebra…
We discuss various properties of Probabilistic Cellular Automata, such as the structure of the set of stationary measures and multiplicity of stationary measures (or phase transition) for reversible models.
A master equation approach is applied to a reversible and conservative cellular automata model (Q2R). The Q2R model is a dynamical variation of the Ising model for ferromagnetism that possesses quite a rich and complex dynamics. The configurational space is composed by a huge number of cycles with exponentially long periods. Following Nicolis and Nicolis [Phys. Rev. A 38, 427-433 (1988)], a coarse-graining approach is applied to the time series of the total magnetization leading to a master equation that governs the macroscopic irreversible dynamics of the Q2R automata. The methodology is repl…
In this paper, we study reversibility of one-dimensional(1D) linear cellular automata(LCA) under null boundary condition, whose core problems have been divided into two main parts: calculating the period of reversibility and verifying the reversibility in a period. With existing methods, the time and space complexity of these two parts are still too expensive to be employed. So the process soon becomes totally incalculable with a slightly big size, which greatly limits its application. In this paper, we set out to solve these two problems using two efficient algorithms, which make it possible …
We introduce a novel method of quantum emulation of a classical reversible cellular automaton. By applying this method to a chaotic cellular automaton, the obtained quantum many-body system thermalizes while all the energy eigenstates and eigenvalues are solvable. These explicit solutions allow us to verify the validity of some scenarios of thermalization to this system. We find that two leading scenarios, the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis scenario and the large effective dimension scenario, do not explain thermalization in this model.
Gauge-invariance is a fundamental concept in physics---known to provide the mathematical justification for all four fundamental forces. In this paper, we provide discrete counterparts to the main gauge theoretical concepts, directly in terms of Cellular Automata. More precisely, we describe a step-by-step gauging procedure to enforce local symmetries upon a given Cellular Automaton. We apply it to a simple Reversible Cellular Automaton for concreteness. From a Computer Science perspective, discretized gauge theories may be applied to numerical analysis, quantum simulation, fault-tolerant (quan…
We consider two relatively natural topologizations of the set of all cellular automata on a fixed alphabet. The first turns out to be rather pathological, in that the countable space becomes neither first-countable nor sequential. Also, reversible automata form a closed set, while surjective ones are dense. The second topology, which is induced by a metric, is studied in more detail. Continuity of composition (under certain restrictions) and inversion, as well as closedness of the set of surjective automata, are proved, and some counterexamples are given. We then generalize this space, in the …

Universality in cellular automata theory is a central problem studied and developed from their origins by John von Neumann. In this paper, we present an algorithm where any Turing machine can be converted to one-dimensional cellular automaton with a 2-linear time and display its spatial dynamics. Three particular Turing machines are converted in three universal one-dimensional cellular automata, they are: binary sum, rule 110 and a universal reversible Turing machine.
Let $G$ be a group and let $X$ be an algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero. Denote $A=X(k)$ the set of rational points of $X$. We investigate invertible algebraic cellular automata $τ\colon A^G \to A^G$ whose local defining map is induced by some morphism of algebraic varieties $X^M \to X$ where $M$ is a finite memory. When $G$ is locally embeddable into finite groups (LEF), then we show that the inverses of reversible algebraic cellular automata are automatically algebraic cellular automata. Generalizations are also obtained for finite product Hopfian…
How do cellular automata behave in the limit of a very large number of cells? Is there a continuum limit with simple properties? We attack this problem by mapping certain classes of automata to quantum field theories for which powerful methods exist for this type of problem. Indeed, many cellular automata admit an interpretation in terms of fermionic particles. Reversible automata on space-lattices with a local updating rule can be described by a partition function or Grassmann functional integral for interacting fermions moving in this space. We discuss large classes of automata that are equi…
Reversible cellular automata are seen as microscopic physical models, and their states of macroscopic equilibrium are described using invariant probability measures. We establish a connection between the invariance of Gibbs measures and the conservation of additive quantities in surjective cellular automata. Namely, we show that the simplex of shift-invariant Gibbs measures associated to a Hamiltonian is invariant under a surjective cellular automaton if and only if the cellular automaton conserves the Hamiltonian. A special case is the (well-known) invariance of the uniform Bernoulli measure …
