We study excitonic polariton relaxation and propagation in bulk CdZnTe using time- resolved photoluminescence and time-of-flight techniques. Propagation of picosecond optical pulses through 0.745 mm thick crystal results in time delays up to 350 ps, depending on the photon energy. Optical pulses with 150 fs duration become strongly stretched. The spectral dependence of group velocity is consistent with the dispersion of the lower excitonic polariton branch. The lifetimes of excitonic polariton in the upper and lower branches are 1.5 and 3 ns, respectively.
Electrically induced reorientation of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) molecules caused by dielectric anisotropy of the material is a fundamental phenomenon widely used in modern technologies. Its Achilles heel is a slow (millisecond) relaxation from the field-on to the field-off state. We present an electro-optic effect in an NLC with a response time of about 30 ns to both the field-on and field-off switching. This effect is caused by the electric field induced modification of the order parameters (EMOP) and does not require reorientation of the optic axis (director).
We study a nanosecond electro-optic response of a nematic liquid crystal in a geometry where an applied electric field $\textbf{E}$ modifies the tensor order parameter but does not change the orientation of the optic axis (director $\hat{\textbf{N}}$). We use a nematic with negative dielectric anisotropy with the electric field applied perpendicularly to $\hat{\textbf{N}}$. The field changes the dielectric tensor at optical frequencies (optic tensor) due to the following mechanisms: (a) nanosecond creation of the biaxial orientational order; (b) uniaxial modification of the orientational order…
The Weyl semimetal WTe2 and MoTe2 show great potential in generating large spin currents since they possess topologically-protected spin-polarized states and can carry a very large current density. In addition, the intrinsic noncentrosymmetry of WTe2 and MoTe2 endows with a unique property of crystal symmetry-controlled spin-orbit torques. An important question to be answered for developing spintronic devices is how spins relax in WTe2 and MoTe2. Here, we report a room-temperature spin relaxation time of 1.2 ns (0.4 ns) in WTe2 (MoTe2) thin film using the time-resolved Kerr rotation (TRKR). Ba…
The Z-scan measurements for the non-centrosymmetric optical crystals β-BaTeMo2O9 (BTMO) were performed. The corresponding experiments were carried out using the 5 ns pulses of the second harmonic of a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser at the 532 nm wavelength. It was shown that the studied crystals possess promising third-order optical susceptibilities, which allow to use the crystal as optical limiters. The comparison with other oxide materials is presented. To clarify the origin of the observed effect, the electronic and optical properties of BTMO were calculated using the density functional theory (D…
A new mechanism for generation of efficient zero phase delay of electromagnetic wave propagation based on wavefront modulation is investigated in this paper. Both numerical simulations and experiment have demonstrated the zero phase delay behaviors of wave propagation in a two-dimensional triangular photonic crystal. The zero phase delay propagation, independent of the propagating distance, is attributed to an invariable wavefront modulation of photonic crystal in the direction of wave propagation, where the phase velocity is perpendicular to the group velocity with parallel wavefronts (or pha…
The spectral--kinetic characteristics of a ZnO:Ga single crystal upon excitation in the vacuum UV region have been studied. At a temperature of 8 K, the exciton luminescence line peaking at 3.356 eV has an extremely small half-width (7.2 meV) and a short decay time (360 ps). In the visible range, a wide luminescence band peaking at ~2.1 eV with a long luminescence time at 8 K and a decay time in the nanosecond range at 300 K is observed. The luminescence excitation spectra of ZnO:Ga have been measured in the range from 4 to 12.5 eV
A pump-probe dark-field X-ray microscopy (DFXM) experiment was carried out at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) with nanosecond drive laser pulses and hybrid mode X-ray probe pulses. We observe a thermal decay due to laser-induced heat diffusion in a Germanium single crystal which matches the theoretical prediction. The single pulse DFXM imaging in combination with the laser-pump X-ray probe method could reveal thermal strain formation and propagation of the acoustic wave "on-the-fly" generated by a laser-induced lattice deformation. This will open a new avenue of materials research on laser-in…
Methylammonium lead triiodine (MAPbI$_3$) is a material representative of the hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites which attract currently great attention due to their photovoltaic efficiency and bright optoelectronic properties. Here, the coherent spin dynamics of charge carriers and spin dependent phenomena induced by the carrier interaction with nuclear spins are studied in MAPbI$_3$ single crystals, using time-resolved Kerr rotation at cryogenic temperatures in magnetic fields up to 3 T. Spin dephasing times up to a few nanoseconds and a longitudinal spin relaxation time of 37 …
The issue of the quantitative analysis of time-resolved photoluminescence experiments is addressed by developing and describing two approaches for determination of unimolecular lifetime, bimolecular recombination coefficient, and equilibrium free-carrier concentration, based on a quite general second-order expression of the electron-hole recombination rate. Application to the case of band-edge emission of ZnO single crystals is reported, evidencing the signature of sub-nanosecond second-order recombination dynamics for optical transitions close to the interband excitation edge. The resulting f…
Hybrid perovskite thin films have demonstrated impressive performance for solar energy conversion and optoelectronic applications. However, further progress will benefit from a better knowledge of the intrinsic photophysics of materials. Here, the low temperature emission properties of CH3NH3PbI3 single crystals are investigated and compared to those of thin polycrystalline films by means of steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. While the emission properties of thin films and crystals appear relatively similar at room temperature, low temperature photoluminescence spec…
Copper (Cu), gold (Au) (111) crystals were illuminated with 120 fs pulses and probed by 600 fs X-ray pulses. Rocking curves were measured versus 267 nm (UV) pump- 0.154 nm probe delay time. Curve width broadening, peak diffracted intensity and angular shift were recorded for the range of UV excitation intensities of 2-8 mJ/cm2 . Observed oscillations in time delay dependences of shift, width and of peak intensity of rocking curves are correlated, as described by acoustic pulse bouncing between crystal surfaces. In (111) Au, acoustic pulse originates from pump absorption layer, and peak intensi…
The possibility of using mixed crystals highly doped with rare earth ions (REIs) as physical systems for creating fast quantum computers with a sampling time of nanoseconds is discussed. The electronic 4f states of rare earth ions with small values of the diagonal elements of the Judd-Ofelt matrix U(2) are proposed as optical frequency qubit levels. CNOT and other conditional gate operations are performed by exciting the rare earth ion into the 4f state with a large diagonal element of U(2), causing a Stark blockade. It is found that the main interaction responsible for this blockade is the qu…
