The effective potential approach for composite operators is generalized to non-zero temperature in order to derive the non-perturbative analytical equation of state for pure SU(3) Yang-Mills fields valid in the whole temperature range. Adjusting our parametrization of the gluon plasma pressure to the lattice pressure at high temperature for SU(3) Yang-Mills case, we have reproduced well our analytical curves and numbers not only for the pressure but for all other independent thermodynamic quantities as well in the whole temperature range $[0, \infty)$. We explicitly show that the pressure is a continuous function of the temperature across a phase transition at $T_c = 266.5 \MeV$. The entropy and energy densities have finite jump discontinuities at $T_c$ with latent heat $ε_{LH}= 1.414$. This is a firm evidence of the first-order phase transition in SU(3) pure gluon plasma. The heat capacity has a $δ$-type singularity (an essential discontinuity) at $T_c$, so that the velocity of sound squared becomes zero at this point. All the independent thermodynamic quantities are exponentially suppressed below $T_c$ and rather slowly approach their respective Stefan-Boltzmann limits at high temperatures. Those thermodynamic quantities which are the ratios of their independent counterparts such as conformity, conformality and the velocity of sound squared approach their Stefan-Boltzmann limit at high temperatures rather rapidly and demonstrate the non-trivial dependence on the temperature below $T_c$. We predict the existence of the three massive and the two massless excitations, all of non-perturbative dynamical origin. One of the massive excitations has an effective mass $1.17 \GeV$ and the two others have the same effective mass $0.585 \GeV$, but are propagating in different ways.
We study the static gluon and quark propagator of the Hamiltonian approach to Quantum Chromodynamics in Coulomb gauge in one-loop Rayleigh--Schrödinger perturbation theory. We show that the results agree with the equal-time limit of the four-dimensional propagators evaluated in the functional integral (Lagrangian) approach.
A recent QCD formulation that is non-perturbative, finite, gauge-invariant, exact emerged from Schwinger's Generating Functional. A first test of the validity of this formulation is provided here against elastic proton-proton scattering at the Intersecting Storage Rings, ISR, energies. Extension to LHC energies is underway.
At an elementary level, we present some non-perturbative aspects of non-abelian gauge theories in four dimensional space-time. Some rigorous results have been obtained in the framework of supersymmetric theories, and a very rich physics related to the strong-coupling dynamics of gauge fields has been discovered. Some of the new phenomena which appeared may play a significant role in future phenomenological models. However, quantitative computations in non-supersymmetric theories, like quantum chromodynamics, is out of reach for the moment.
A new non-perturbative, gauge-invariant model QCD renormalization is applied to high energy elastic pp-scattering. The differential cross-section deduced from this model displays a diffraction dip that resembles those of experiments. Comparison with ISR and LHC data is currently underway.
The BRST quartet mechanism is briefly reviewed. A special emphasis is given to the distinction of perturbative versus non-perturbative quartets. The field contents of the non-perturbative BRST quartets generated by transverse gluons or quarks in Landau gauge are presented. Corresponding truncated Bethe-Salpeter equations for the respective first daughter and second parent states are derived. It is discussed in which sense these equations provide evidence for the existence of bound states as daughter states in non-perturbative BRST quartets. It is noted that within the scaling solution of funct…
Infrared divergences in the perturbative expansion of gauge theory amplitudes and cross sections have been a focus of theoretical investigations for almost a century. New insights still continue to emerge, as higher perturbative orders are explored, and high-precision phenomenological applications demand an ever more refined understanding. This review aims to provide a pedagogical overview of the subject. We briefly cover some of the early historical results, we provide some simple examples of low-order applications in the context of perturbative QCD, and discuss the necessary tools to extend …
Gauge fixing in the non-perturbative domain of non-Abelian gauge theories is obstructed by the Gribov-Singer ambiguity. To compare results from different methods it is necessary to resolve this ambiguity explicitly. Such a resolution is proposed using conditions on correlation functions for a family of non-perturbative Landau gauges. As a consequence, the various results available for correlation functions could possibly correspond to different non-perturbative Landau gauges, discriminated by an additional non-perturbative gauge parameter. The proposal, the necessary assumptions, and evidence …
We discuss the Hamiltonian formulation of the Schwinger proper-time method of calculating Green functions in gauge theories. Instead of calculating Feynman diagrams, we solve the corresponding Dyson-Schwinger equations. We express the solutions in terms of vertex operators, which consist of the zero modes of the vertex operators appearing in string theories. We show how color decomposition arises in this formalism at tree level. At the one-loop level, we arrive at expressions similar to those obtained in the background gauge. In both cases, no special gauge-fixing procedure is needed.
We initiate the continuum description of a non-perturbative 5d lattice Yang-Mills model with 4d boundaries using the $\varepsilon$-expansion. In its simplest version classically the bulk has an $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry and on the boundary there is an Abelian-Higgs system with zero scalar potential. In part I we compute the Renormalization Group flows and related quantities in a limit where the boundary decouples from the bulk.
Perturbative scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory have many unexpected properties, such as holomorphy of the maximally helicity violating amplitudes. To interpret these results, we Fourier transform the scattering amplitudes from momentum space to twistor space, and argue that the transformed amplitudes are supported on certain holomorphic curves. This in turn is apparently a consequence of an equivalence between the perturbative expansion of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and the $D$-instanton expansion of a certain string theory, namely the topological $B$ model whose target spac…
We reinterpret the Faddeev-Popov gauge-fixing procedure of Yang-Mills theories as the definition of a topological quantum field theory for gauge group elements depending on a background connection. This has the advantage of relating topological gauge-fixing ambiguities to the global breaking of a supersymmetry. The global zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov ghosts are handled in the context of an equivariant cohomology without breaking translational invariance. The gauge-fixing involves constant fields which play the role of moduli and modify the behavior of Green functions at subasymptotic scales…
We investigate the field dependence of the gauge couplings of locally supersymmetric effective quantum field theories. We find that the Weyl rescaling of supergravity gives rise to Wess-Zumino terms that affect the gauge couplings at the one-loop level. These Wess-Zumino terms are crucial in assuring supersymmetric consistency of both perturbative and non-perturbative gauge interactions. At the perturbative level, we distinguish between the holomorphic Wilsonian gauge couplings and the physically-measurable momentum-dependent effective gauge couplings; the latter are affected by the Konishi an…
In this paper we address the issue of the non-perturbative quantization of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in the Curci-Ferrari gauge. In particular, we construct a Refined Gribov-Zwanziger action for this gauge which takes into account the presence of gauge copies as well as the dynamical formation of dimension two condensates. This action enjoys a non-perturbative BRST symmetry recently proposed in \cite{Capri:2015ixa}. Finally, we give attention to the gluon propagator in different space-time dimensions.
We calculate the static quark potential for an SU(N) gauge theory in the Maximal Abelian gauge as well as its Abelian projection up to two loops in perturbation theory. We discuss its renormalization properties. The result is compared with a recent lattice result at $r \lesssim 0.5$ fm.
We discuss Faddeev-Popov quantization at the non-perturbative level and show that Gribov's prescription of cutting off the functional integral at the Gribov horizon does not change the Schwinger-Dyson equations, but rather resolves an ambiguity in the solution of these equations. We note that Gribov's prescription is not exact, and we therefore turn to the method of stochastic quantization in its time-independent formulation, and recall the proof that it is correct at the non-perturbative level. The non-perturbative Landau gauge is derived as a limiting case, and it is found that it yields the…
We consider the classical equations of motion of $SU(2)$ gauge theory, without a Higgs field, in Minkowski space. We work in the spherical ansatz and develop a perturbative expansion in the coupling constant $g$ for solutions which in the far past look like freely propagating spherical shells. The topological charge $Q$ of these solutions is typically non-integer. We then show that $Q$ can be expressed as a power series expansion in $g$ which can be nonzero at finite order. We give an explicit analytic calculation of the order $g^5$ contribution to $Q$ for specific initial pulses. We discuss t…
We show that the requirement of gauge invariance is not enough to fix the form of interactions between unparticles and gauge fields, thus revealing a wide new class of gauged unparticle actions. Our approach also allows us to construct operators which create gauge invariant coloured unparticles. We discuss both their perturbative and non--perturbative properties.
We derive a non-perturbative evolution equation for the gluon propagator in axial gauges based on the framework of Wetterich's formulation of the exact renormalization group. We obtain asymptotic solutions to this equation in the ultraviolet and infrared limits.
We study the non-perturbative production of gluon pairs from a constant SU(3) chromo-electric background field via the Schwinger mechanism. We fix the covariant background gauge with an arbitrary gauge parameter α. We determine the transverse momentum distribution of the gluons, as well as the total probability of creating pairs per unit space time volume. We find that the result is independent of the covariant gauge parameter αused to define arbitrary covariant background gauges. We find that our non-perturbative result is both gauge invariant and gauge parameter αindependent.
The spectrum of vacuum fluctuations in the Milne space (i.e. the tau-eta coordinate system) is an important ingredient in the thermalization studies in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this paper, the Schrodinger functional for the gauge theory perturbative vacuum is derived for the Milne space. The Wigner-transform of the corresponding vacuum density functional is also found together with the propagators. We finally identify the fluctuation spectrum in vacuum, and show the equivalence between the present approach and the symplectic product based method.
We study gauge coupling unification in supersymmetric $E_6$ models where an additional $\mathrm{U}(1)'$ gauge symmetry is broken near the TeV scale and a number of exotic matter fields from the $\bm{27}$ representations have $O(\mathrm{TeV})$ mass. Solving the 2-loop renormalization group equations of gauge couplings and a kinetic mixing coupling between the $\mathrm{U}(1)'$ and $\mathrm{U}(1)_Y$ gauge fields, we find that the gauge couplings fall into the non-perturbative regime below the GUT scale. We examine threshold corrections on the running of gauge couplings from both light and heavy (…
In this paper, we discuss the gluon propagator in the linear covariant gauges in $D=2,3,4$ Euclidean dimensions. Non-perturbative effects are taken into account via the so-called Refined Gribov-Zwanziger framework. We point out that, as in the Landau and maximal Abelian gauges, for $D=3,4$, the gluon propagator displays a massive (decoupling) behaviour, while for $D=2$, a scaling one emerges. All results are discussed in a setup that respects the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry, through a recently introduced non-perturbative BRST transformation. We also propose a minimizing functiona…
In this article we present a mechanism in which we find new non-perturbative solutions of quantum electrodynamics in four dimensions. Two non-perturbative solutions are found for approximate Schwinger-Dyson equations. The mass ratio of the three solutions (one is ordinary solution) is approximately $1:(8π/α)^{2/3}:8π/α$.
We analyze the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in gauge theories solely by the non-perturbative renormalization group, without recourse to the Schwinger-Dyson method. First, we briefly review the basic notions and formulation, and clarify its great feature that it gives a systematic approximation scheme without any divergent series nor serious gauge dependence, compared to other perturbative and non-perturbative methods. Then we apply this new method to QED and QCD to find that our lowest level approximation improves the ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation results in a gauge independent way. We…
Using numerical stochastic perturbation theory, we determine the first 35 infinite volume coefficients of the perturbative expansion in powers of the strong coupling constant $α$ of the plaquette in SU(3) gluodynamics. These coefficients are obtained in lattice regularization with the standard Wilson gauge action. The on-set of the dominance of the dimension four renormalon associated to the gluon condensate is clearly observed. We determine the normalization of the corresponding singularity in the Borel plane and convert this into the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme. We also comment on the im…
In 4d lattice simulations of Standard Model like theories, the renormalized gauge coupling in the broken phase can be determined from the prefactor of the Yukawa term in the static potential. We compute the same quantity in terms of the conventional MSbar scheme gauge coupling. The result allows for a further non-perturbative test of finite temperature dimensional reduction, by a comparison of the critical temperatures for the electroweak phase transition as obtained with 4d lattice simulations and with 3d effective theory simulations.
The dynamics at the IR fixed point realized in the $SU(N_c)$ gauge theories with massless Dirac fermions is studied by means of the non-perturbative renormalization group. The analysis includes the IR fixed points with non-trivial Yukawa couplings. The renormalization properties of the scalar field are also discussed and it is shown that hierarchical mass scale may be allowed without intense fine-tuning due to a large anomalous dimension.
We consider a non-perturbative formulation of an SU(2) massive gauge theory on a space-time lattice, which is also a discretised gauged non-linear chiral model. The lattice model is shown to have an exactly conserved global SU(2) symmetry. If a scaling region for the lattice model exists and the lightest degrees of freedom are spin one vector particles with the same quantum numbers as the conserved current, we argue that the most general effective theory describing their low-energy dynamics must be a massive gauge theory. We present results of a exploratory numerical simulation of the model an…
An equivariantly gauge-fixed non-abelian gauge theory is a theory in which a coset of the gauge group, not containing the maximal abelian subgroup, is gauge fixed. Such theories are non-perturbatively well-defined. In a finite volume, the equivariant BRST symmetry guarantees that expectation values of gauge-invariant operators are equal to their values in the unfixed theory. However, turning on a small breaking of this symmetry, and turning it off after the thermodynamic limit has been taken, can in principle reveal new phases. In this paper we use a combination of strong-coupling and mean-fie…
Current results in high temperature gauge theories obtained in the context of the perturbative method of resumming hard thermal loops are reviewed. Beyond leading order properties of the gluon excitation, and the recent (controversial) calculations of the damping rates are discussed. QCD predictions on plasma signatures are exemplified by the thermal production rates of energetic as well as soft photons. [Talk given at the 3rd Workshop on Thermal Field Theories and their Applications, August 15--27, 1993, Banff, Alberta, Canada]
Recent progress in the computation of one-loop gluon amplitudes is reviewed. These methods were originally derived from superstring theory and are significantly more efficient than conventional Feynman rules. With these methods, explicit computations can be performed beyond those achieved by traditional methods.

We review some applications of tree-level (classical) relations between gravity and gauge theory that follow from string theory. Together with $D$-dimensional unitarity, these relations can be used to perturbatively quantize gravity theories, i.e. they contain the necessary information for obtaining loop contributions. We also review recent applications of these ideas showing that N=1 D=11 supergravity diverges, and review arguments that N=8 D=4 supergravity is less divergent than previously thought, though it does appear to diverge at five loops. Finally, we describe field variables for the E…
In this review we describe a non-trivial relationship between perturbative gauge theory and gravity scattering amplitudes. At the semi-classical or tree level, the scattering amplitudes of gravity theories in flat space can be expressed as a sum of products of well defined pieces of gauge theory amplitudes. These relationships were first discovered by Kawai, Lewellen and Tye in the context of string theory, but hold more generally. In particular, they hold for standard Einstein gravity. A method based on D-dimensional unitarity can then be used to systematically construct all quantum loop corr…
In the perturbation theory, trasnport phenomena in hot non-Abelian gauge theories like QCD are often plagued with infrared singularities or nonperturbative effects. We show, in the context of the Kadanoff & Baym formalism, that there are certain nonequilibrium processes which are free from such difficulties. For these processes, due to an interplay between the macroscopic and microscopic physics, characteristic time scale (the mesoscale) naturally enters as an infrared cutoff and purely perturbative description by the Boltzmann equation is valid.
We derive, from first principle, the Fokker-Planck equation describing the non-perturbative real-time evolution of a gauge field at high temperatures on the spatial scale $(g^2T)^{-1}$ and the time scale $(g^4T)^{-1}$, where $g$ is the gauge coupling and $T$ is the temperature. The knowledge of the effective dynamics on such spatial and time scales is crucial for the understanding and quantitative calculation of the baryon number violation rate at high temperatures in the electroweak theory. The Fokker-Planck equation, which describes the diffusive motion of soft components of the gauge field …
We reconsider perturbative unitarity in quantum field theory and upgrade several arguments and results. The minimum assumptions that lead to the largest time equation, the cutting equations and the unitarity equation are identified. Using this knowledge and a special gauge, we give a new, simpler proof of perturbative unitarity in gauge theories and generalize it to quantum gravity, in four and higher dimensions. The special gauge interpolates between the Feynman gauge and the Coulomb gauge without double poles. When the Coulomb limit is approached, the unphysical particles drop out of the cut…
In this paper, a proposal for the restriction of the Euclidean functional integral to a region free of infinitesimal Gribov copies in linear covariant gauges is discussed. An effective action, akin to the Gribov-Zwanziger action of the Landau gauge, is obtained which implements the aforementioned restriction. Although originally non-local, this action can be cast in local form by introducing auxiliary fields. As in the case of the Landau gauge, dimension two condensates are generated at the quantum level, giving rise to a refinement of the action which is employed to obtain the tree-level gluo…
The long standing problem of a non-perturbative renormalization of a gauge field theoretical Hamiltonian is addressed and explicitly carried out within an (effective) light-cone Hamiltonian approach to QCD. The procedure is in line with the conventional ideas: The Hamiltonian is first regulated by suitable cut-off functions, and subsequently renormalized by suitable counter terms to make it cut-off independent. Emphasized is the considerable freedom in the cut-off function which eventually can modify the Coulomb potential of two charges at sufficiently small distances. The approach provides ne…
We summarize the current status of our understanding of the structure of the perturbative QCD expressions for the QCD generalization of the Crewther relation.
We study duality in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric QCD in the non-Abelian Coulomb phase, order-by-order in scheme-independent series expansions. Using exact results, we show how the dimensions of various fundamental and composite chiral superfields, and the quantities $a$, $a/c$, and $b$ at superconformal fixed points of the renormalization group emerge in scheme-independent series expansions in the electric and magnetic theories. We further demonstrate that truncations of these series expansions to modest order yield very accurate approximations to these quantities.
The dynamics of high temperature gauge fields, on scales relevant for non-perturbative phenomena such as electroweak baryogenesis, may be described by a remarkably simple effective theory. This theory, which takes the form of a local, stochastic, classical Yang-Mills theory, depends on a single parameter, the non-Abelian (or ``color'') conductivity. This effective theory has recently been shown to be valid to next-to-leading-log order (NLLO), provided one uses an improved NLLO value for the non-Abelian conductivity. Comparisons of numerical simulations using this NLLO effective theory and a mo…
Recently it has been pointed out that diagonal Padé approximants to truncated perturbative series in gauge theories have the remarkable property of being independent of the choice of the renormalization scale as long as the gauge coupling parameter $α(p^2)$ is taken to evolve according to the one-loop renormalization group equation -- i.e., in the large-$β_0$ approximation. In this letter we propose and describe an improvement to the method of diagonal Padé approximants. The improved method results in approximants which are independent of the chosen renormalization scale when $α(p^2)$ evolves …

We present a calculation of the three-gluon vertex from its Dyson-Schwinger equation in Landau-gauge Yang-Mills theory. All tensor structures are considered and back-coupled self-consistently. Within the chosen truncation, two-loop diagrams as well as diagrams containing Green's functions beyond the primitively divergent ones are neglected. Only the three-gluon vertex is chosen to be dynamical; the other propagators and vertex functions are provided as separate solutions of their Dyson-Schwinger equations or by Ansatz. For both scaling- and decoupling-type solutions we observe, in agreement wi…
We propose a new non-perturbative method to compute derivatives of gauge coupling constants with respect to anisotropic lattice spacings (anisotropy coefficients), which are required in an evaluation of thermodynamic quantities from numerical simulations on the lattice. Our method is based on a precise measurement of the finite temperature deconfining transition curve in the lattice coupling parameter space extended to anisotropic lattices by applying the spectral density method. We test the method for the cases of SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories at the deconfining transition point on lattices …
We construct a Z_2 orbifold projection of SU(N) gauge theories formulated in five dimensions with a compact fifth dimension. We show through a non-perturbative argument that no boundary mass term for the Higgs field, identified with some of the fifth dimensional components of the gauge field, is generated, which would be quadratically divergent in the five-dimensional ultraviolet cutoff. This opens the possibility of studying these theories non-perturbatively in order to establish if they can be used as effective weakly interacting theories at low energies. We make preparations for a study on …
In perturbative calculations the masses of the Higgs, the Ws and the Z are usually determined from the pole position of the corresponding gauge-dependent propagators. In full non-perturbative lattice calculations it is much more direct to instead investigate the bound state spectrum with its gauge-independent meaning, which then contains bound states of Higgses and/or Ws and Zs. It is possible to extend the perturbative definition of the Higgs mass also to such a full non-perturbative setting by determining the respective full non-perturbative propagators of the Higgs, the Ws, and the Z, and a…
We study the phase diagram and mass spectrum of an $SU(2)$ Gauge-Higgs Unification scenario on a five-dimensional orbifold. We observe spontaneous symmetry breaking within the Higgs phase of the theory and, in the vicinity of a newly discovered phase, we find that the ratio of Higgs to gauge boson masses takes a Standard Model-like value. Precisely in this region of the phase diagram, we observe dimensional reduction via localisation.
Applicability of the previously introduced method of modified diagonal Baker-Gammel approximants is extended to truncated perturbative series (TPS) of any order in gauge theories. The approximants reproduce the TPS when expanded in power series of the gauge coupling parameter to the order of that TPS. The approximants have the favorable property of being exactly invariant under the change of the renormalization scale, and that property is arrived at by a generalization of the method of the diagonal Padé approximants. The renormalization scheme dependence is subsequently eliminated by a variant…
When computed to one-loop order in resummed perturbation theory, the non-abelian Debye mass appears to be logarithmically sensitive to the magnetic scale $g^2T$. More generally, we show that in higher orders power-like infrared divergences forbid the use of perturbation theory to calculate the corrections to Debye screening. A similar infrared problem occurs in the determination of the mass-shell for the scalar propagator in 2+1-dimensional scalar electrodynamics. In this context, we provide a non-perturbative approach which solves the infrared problems and allows for an accurate calculation o…
None of the asymptotic states commonly used in perturbative QCD are gauge invariant. A similar statement could be made about QED, but in QED one can construct gauge invariant "dressed" states (with Dirac electrons) that are unitarily equivalent to the states used in perturbation theory. Perturbative expansions of dressed states have been derived for QCD, but Gribov copies obstruct these states from remaining gauge invariant non-perturbatively. Introduced here are new QCD states that are exact solutions to the Dirac condition, so they remain gauge invariant non-perturbatively. The quark content…
It is well known that in single step breaking of R-parity conserving SUSY SO(10) that needs the Higgs representations $126+\bar 126$ the GUT-gauge coupling violates the perturbative constraint at mass scales few times larger than the GUT scale. Therefore, if the SO(10) gauge coupling is to remain perturbative up the Planck scale(=2x10^{18} GeV), the scale $M_U$ of GUT symmetry breaking is to be bounded from below. The bound depends upon specific Higgs representations used for SO(10) symmetry breaking but, as we find, can not be lower than $1.5x10^{17}$ GeV. In order to obtain such high unifica…
The coupled system of renormalized Dyson-Schwinger equations for the quark, gluon and ghost propagators of Landau gauge QCD is solved within truncation schemes. These employ bare as well as non-perturbative ansaetze for the vertices such that the running coupling as well as the quark mass function are independent of the renormalization point. The one-loop anomalous dimensions of all propagators are reproduced. Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking is found, the dynamically generated quark mass agrees well with phenomenological values and corresponding results from lattice calculations. The effect…
