We investigate the entangling capacity of dynamical operations when provided with local ancilla. A comparison is made between the entangling capacity with and without the assistance of prior entanglement. An analytic solution is found for the log-negativity entangling capacity of two-qubit gates, which equals the entanglement of the Choi matrix isomorphic to the unitary operator. Surprisingly, the availability of prior entanglement does not affect this result; a property we call resource independence of the entangling capacity. We prove several useful upper-bounds on the entangling capacity that hold for general qudit dynamical operations, and for a whole family of entanglement monotones including log-negativity and log-robustness. The log-robustness entangling capacity is shown to be resource independent for general dynamics. We provide numerical results supporting a conjecture that the log-negativity entangling capacity is resource independence for all two-qudit unitaries.
We prove that the entangling capacity of a two-qubit unitary operator without local ancillas, both with and without the restriction to initial product states, as quantified by the maximum attainable concurrence, is directly related to the distinguishability of a closely related pair of two-qubit unitary operators. These operators are the original operator transformed into its canonical form and the adjoint of this canonical form. The distinguishability of these operators is quantified by the minimum overlap of the output states over all possible input probe states. The entangling capacity of t…
We investigate the creation of entanglement by the application of phases whose value depends on the state of a collection of qubits. First we give the necessary and sufficient conditions for a given set of phases to result in the creation of entanglement in a state comprising of an arbitrary number of qubits. Then we analyze the creation of entanglement between any two qubits in three qubit pure and mixed states. We use our result to prove that entanglement is necessary for Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm to have an exponential advantage over its classical counterpart.
It is shown that entangling two-qubit phase gates for quantum computation with atoms inside a resonant optical cavity can be generated via common laser addressing, essentially, within one step. The obtained dynamical or geometrical phases are produced by an evolution that is robust against dissipation in form of spontaneous emission from the atoms and the cavity and demonstrates resilience against fluctuations of control parameters. This is achieved by using the setup introduced by Pachos and Walther [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 187903 (2002)] and employing entangling Raman- or STIRAP-like transition…
In this thesis there are two topics: On the entangling capacity, in terms of negativity, of quantum operations, and on the supremum of negativity for symmetric Gaussian states. Positive partial transposition (PPT) states are an important class of states in quantum information. We show a method to calculate bounds for entangling capacity, the amount of entanglement that can be produced by a quantum operation, in terms of negativity, a measure of entanglement. The bounds of entangling capacity are found to be associated with how non-PPT (PPT preserving) an operation is. A length that quantifies …
We consider how much entanglement can be produced by a non-local two-qubit unitary operation, $U_{AB}$ - the entangling capacity of $U_{AB}$. For a single application of $U_{AB}$, with no ancillas, we find the entangling capacity and show that it generally helps to act with $U_{AB}$ on an entangled state. Allowing ancillas, we present numerical results from which we can conclude, quite generally, that allowing initial entanglement typically increases the optimal capacity in this case as well. Next, we show that allowing collective processing does not increase the entangling capacity if initial…
We present a random-matrix analysis of the entangling power of a unitary operator as a function of the number of times it is iterated. We consider unitaries belonging to the circular ensembles of random matrices (CUE or COE) applied to random (real or complex) non-entangled states. We verify numerically that the average entangling power is a monotonic decreasing function of time. The same behavior is observed for the "operator entanglement" --an alternative measure of the entangling strength of a unitary. On the analytical side we calculate the CUE operator entanglement and asymptotic values f…
The capacity of a quantum gate to produce entangled states on a bipartite system is quantified in terms of the entangling power. This quantity is defined as the average of the linear entropy of entanglement of the states produced after applying a quantum gate over the whole set of separable states. Here we focus on symmetric two-qubit quantum gates, acting on the symmetric two-qubit space, and calculate the entangling power in terms of the appropriate local-invariant. A geometric description of the local equivalence classes of gates is given in terms of the $\mathfrak{su}(3)$ Lie algebra root …
We analyze the quantum entanglement properties of bosonic particles hopping over graph structures.Mode-entanglement of a graph vertex with respect the rest of the graph is generated, starting from a product state, by turning on for a finite time a tunneling along the graph edges. The maximum achieved during the dynamical evolution by this bi-partite entanglement characterizes the entangling power of a given hopping hamiltonian. We studied this entangling power as a function of the self-interaction parameters i.e., non-linearities, for all the graphs up to four vertices and for two different na…
Color centers in solids, such as the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond, offer well-protected and well-controlled localized electron spins that can be employed in various quantum technologies. Moreover, the long coherence time of the surrounding spinful nuclei can enable a robust quantum register controlled through the color center. We design pulse sequence protocols that drive the electron spin to generate robust entangling gates with these nuclear memory qubits. We find that compared to using Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) alone, Uhrig decoupling sequence and hybrid protocols composed of C…
Engineering entanglement between quantum systems often involves coupling through a bosonic mediator, which should be disentangled from the systems at the operation's end. The quality of such an operation is generally limited by environmental and control noise. One of the prime techniques for suppressing noise is by dynamical decoupling, where one actively applies pulses at a rate that is faster than the typical time scale of the noise. However, for boson-mediated gates, current dynamical decoupling schemes require executing the pulses only when the boson and the quantum systems are disentangle…
We consider a model of two qubits dissipating into both local and global environments (generally at non-zero temperatures), with the possibility of interpolating between purely local dissipation and purely global one. The corresponding dissipative dynamical map is characterized in terms of its Kraus operators focusing on the stationary regime. We then determine conditions under which entanglement can be induced by the action of such a map. It results (rather counterintuitively) that in order to have entanglement in the presence of local environment, this latter must be at nonzero temperature.
The model of open quantum systems is adopted to describe the non-local dynamical behaviour of qubits processed by entangling gates. The analysis gets to the conclusion that a distinction between evaluation steps and task-oriented computing steps is justified only within classical computation. In fact, the use of entangling gates permits to reduce two steps (evaluation and calculation) to a single computational one, and this determines an effective computational speed-up. The application of the open quantum systems model suggests that the reduction to one-computational step is strongly related …
Scaling up superconducting quantum processors with optimized performance requires a sufficient flexibility in the choice of operating points for single and two qubit gates to maximize their fidelity and cope with imperfections. Flux control is an efficient technique to manipulate the parameters of tunable qubits, in particular to activate entangling gates. At flux sensitive points of operation, the ubiquitous presence of 1/f flux noise however gives rise to dephasing by inducing fluctuations of the qubit frequency. We show how two-tone modulation of the flux bias, a bichromatic modulation, giv…
We investigate how the dynamical Casimir effect can entangle quantum systems in different coupling regimes of circuit quantum electrodynamics, and show the robustness of such entanglement generation against dissipative effects with current technology. We consider two qubit-resonator systems, which are coupled by a SQUID driven with an external magnetic field, and explore the entire range of coupling regimes between each qubit and its respective resonator. In this scheme, we derive a semianalytic explanation for the entanglement generation between both superconducting qubits when they are coupl…
We propose a $σ_z\otimes σ_z$ laser-free entangling gate which uses the intrinsic J-coupling of ions in a static magnetic gradient. Dephasing of the interaction is suppressed by means of continuous dynamical decoupling using pairs of microwave fields. The gate is virtually insensitive to common amplitude noise of the microwave fields and enables high fidelities despite qubit frequency fluctuations, while the J-coupling interaction's inherent robustness to motional decoherence is retained. Errors far below the fault-tolerant threshold can be achieved at high initial temperatures, negating the r…
Protecting quantum states from the decohering effects of the environment is of great importance for the development of quantum computation devices and quantum simulators. Here, we introduce a continuous dynamical decoupling protocol that enables us to protect the entangling gate operation between two qubits from the environmental noise. We present a simple model that involves two qubits which interact with each other with a strength that depends on their mutual distance and generates the entanglement among them, as well as in contact with an environment. The nature of the environment, that is,…
Communication rates over quantum channels can be boosted by entanglement, via superadditivity phenomena or entanglement assistance. Superadditivity refers to the capacity improvement from entangling inputs across multiple channel uses. Nevertheless, when unlimited entanglement assistance is available, the entanglement between channel uses becomes unnecessary -- the entanglement-assisted (EA) capacity of a single-sender and single-receiver channel is additive. We generalize the additivity of EA capacity to general multiple-access channels (MACs) for the total communication rate. Furthermore, fo…
We investigate the quantum nature of gravity in terms of the coherence of quantum objects. As a basic setting, we consider two gravitating objects each in a superposition state of two paths. The evolution of objects is described by the completely positive and trace-preserving (CPTP) map with a population-preserving property. This property reflects that the probability of objects being on each path is preserved. We use the $\ell_1$-norm of coherence to quantify the coherence of objects. In the present paper, the quantum nature of gravity is characterized by an entangling map, which is a CPTP ma…
We show that entangling capacities based on the Jamiolkowski isomorphism may be used to place lower bounds on the communication capacities of arbitrary bipartite unitaries. Therefore, for these definitions, the relations which have been previously shown for two-qubit unitaries also hold for arbitrary dimensions. These results are closely related to the theory of the entanglement-assisted capacity of channels. We also present more general methods for producing ensembles for communication from initial states for entanglement creation.
The generation of entanglement between two oscillators that interact via a common reservoir is theoretically studied. The reservoir is modeled by a one-dimensional harmonic crystal initially in thermal equilibrium. Starting from a separable state, the oscillators can become entangled after a transient time, that is of the order of the thermalization time scale. This behavior is observed at finite temperature even when the oscillators are at a distance significantly larger than the crystal's interparticle spacing. The underlying physical mechanisms can be explained by the dynamical properties o…
Here, we study the capacity of a quantum channel, assuming linear optical encoding, as a function of available photons and optical modes. First, we observe that substantial improvement is made possible by not restricting ourselves to a rail-encoded qubit basis. Then, we derive an analytic formula for general channel capacity and show that this capacity is achieved without requiring the use of entangling operations typically required for scalable universal quantum computation, e.g. KLM measurement-assisted transformations. As an example, we provide an explicit encoding scheme using the resource…
We present a study on how to realize the widely interested optomechanical entanglement at high temperature. Unlike the majority of the previous experimental and theoretical researches that consider the entanglement of a mechanical resonator with a cavity field created by red-detuned continuous-wave or blue-detuned pulsed driving field, we find that applying blue-detuned continuous-wave pump field to cavity optomechanical systems can achieve considerable degrees of quantum entanglement, which is generally challenging to obtain at high temperature for the known physical systems. The competition …
A "strongly" interacting, and entangling, heavy, non recoiling, external particle effects a significant change of the environment. Described locally, the corresponding entanglement event is a generalized electric Aharonov Bohm effect, that differs from the original one in a crucial way. We propose a gedanken interference experiment. The predicted shift of the interference pattern is due to a self induced or "private" potential difference experienced while the particle is in vacuum. We show that all non trivial Born Oppenheimer potentials are "private" potentials. We apply the Born Oppenheimer …
We study the entangling power of a nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) simultaneously interacting with two separately trapped ions. To highlight this entangling capability, we consider a special regime where the ion-ion coupling does not generate entanglement in the system, and any resulting entanglement will be the result of the NEMS acting as an entangling device. We study the dynamical behavior of the bipartite NEMS-induced ion-ion entanglement as well as the tripartite entanglement of the whole system (ions+NEMS). We found some quite remarkable phenomena in this hybrid system. For instance…
To advance quantum information science a constant pursuit is the search for physical systems that meet the stringent requirements for creating and preserving quantum entanglement. In atomic physics, robust two-qubit entanglement is typically achieved by strong, long-range interactions in the form of Coulomb interactions between ions or dipolar interactions between Rydberg atoms. While these interactions allow fast gates, atoms subject to these interactions must overcome the associated coupling to the environment and cross-talk among qubits. Local interactions, such as those requiring significa…
The dynamical behaviour of complex quantum systems can be harnessed for information processing. With this aim, quantum reservoir computing (QRC) with Ising spin networks was recently introduced as a quantum version of classical reservoir computing. In turn, reservoir computing is a neuro-inspired machine learning technique that consists in exploiting dynamical systems to solve nonlinear and temporal tasks. We characterize the performance of the spin-based QRC model with the Information Processing Capacity (IPC), which allows to quantify the computational capabilities of a dynamical system beyo…
We demonstrate that for general conformal field theories (CFTs), the entanglement for small perturbations of the vacuum is organized in a novel holographic way. For spherical entangling regions in a constant time slice, perturbations in the entanglement entropy are solutions of a Klein-Gordon equation in an auxiliary de Sitter (dS) spacetime. The role of the emergent time-like direction in dS is played by the size of the entangling sphere. For CFTs with extra conserved charges, e.g., higher spin charges, we show that each charge gives rise to a separate dynamical scalar field in dS.
We define dynamical universality classes for many-body systems whose unitary evolution is punctuated by projective measurements. In cases where such measurements occur randomly at a finite rate $p$ for each degree of freedom, we show that the system has two dynamical phases: `entangling' and `disentangling'. The former occurs for $p$ smaller than a critical rate $p_c$, and is characterized by volume-law entanglement in the steady-state and `ballistic' entanglement growth after a quench. By contrast, for $p > p_c$ the system can sustain only area-law entanglement. At $p = p_c$ the steady state …
A fundamental problem in resource theory is to study the manipulation of the resource. Focusing on a general dynamical resource theory of quantum channels, here we consider tasks of one-shot resource distillation and dilution with a single copy of the resource. For any target of unitary channel or pure state preparation channel, we establish a universal strategy to determine upper and lower bounds on rates that convert between any given resource and the target. We show that the rates are related to resource measures based on the channel robustness and the channel hypothesis testing entropy, wi…
This paper investigates the dynamical generation of entanglement in scattering systems, in particular two spin systems that interact via rotationally-invariant scattering. The spin degrees of freedom of the in-states are assumed to be in unentangled, pure states, as defined by the entropy of entanglement. Because of the restriction of rotationally-symmetric interactions, perfectly-entangling S-matrices, i.e. those that lead to a maximally entangled out-state, only exist for a certain class of separable in-states. Using Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for the rotation group, the scattering phases t…
A key element in the architecture of a quantum information processing network is a reliable physical interface between fields and qubits. We study a process of entanglement transfer engineering, where two remote qubits respectively interact with entangled two-mode continuous variable (CV) field. We quantify the entanglement induced in the qubit state at the expenses of the loss of entanglement in the CV system. We discuss the range of mixed entangled states which can be obtained with this set-up. Furthermore, we suggest a protocol to determine the residual entangling power of the light fields,…
The development of qualitatively new measurement capabilities is often a prerequisite for critical scientific and technological advances. The dramatic progress made by modern probe techniques to uncover the microscopic structure of matter is fundamentally rooted in our control of two defining traits of quantum mechanics: discreteness of physical properties and interference phenomena. Magnetic Resonance Imaging, for instance, exploits the fact that protons have spin and can absorb photons at frequencies that depend on the medium to image the anatomy and physiology of living systems. Scattering …
If gravitational perturbations are quantized into gravitons in analogy with the electromagnetic field and photons, the resulting graviton interactions should lead to an entangling interaction between massive objects. We suggest a test of this prediction. To do this, we introduce the concept of interactive quantum information sensing. This novel sensing protocol is tailored to provable verification of weak dynamical entanglement generation between a pair of systems. We show that this protocol is highly robust to typical thermal noise sources. The sensitivity can moreover be increased both using…

We propose an experimentally feasible architecture with controllable long-range couplings built up from local exchange interactions. The scheme consists of a spin-bus, with strong, always-on interactions, coupled dynamically to external qubits of the Loss and DiVincenzo type. Long-range correlations are enabled by a spectral gap occurring in a finite-size chain. The bus can also form a hub for multiqubit entangling operations. We show how multiqubit gates may be used to efficiently generate $W$-states (an important entanglement resource). The spin-bus therefore provides a route for scalable so…
