We report the first detection of the ground-state rotational transition of the methylidyne cation CH+ towards the massive star-forming region DR21 with the HIFI instrument onboard the Herschel satellite. The line profile exhibits a broad emission line, in addition to two deep and broad absorption features associated with the DR21 molecular ridge and foreground gas. These observations allow us to determine a CH+ J=1-0 line frequency of 835137 +/- 3 MHz, in good agreement with a recent experimental determination. We estimate the CH+ column density to be a few 1e13 cm^-2 in the gas seen in emission, and > 1e14 cm^-2 in the components responsible for the absorption, which is indicative of a high line of sight average abundance [CH+]/[H] > 1.2x10^-8. We show that the CH+ column densities agree well with the predictions of state-of-the-art C-shock models in dense UV-illuminated gas for the emission line, and with those of turbulent dissipation models in diffuse gas for the absorption lines.
We present new integral field spectroscopy of the gravitationally lensed broad absorption line (BAL) quasar H1413+117, covering the ultraviolet to visible rest-frame spectral range. We observe strong microlensing signatures in lensed image D, and we use this microlensing to simultaneously constrain both the broad emission and broad absorption line gas. By modeling the lens system over the range of probable lensing galaxy redshifts and using on a new argument based on the wavelength-independence of the broad line lensing magnifications, we determine that there is no significant broad line emiss…
The galactocentric distance of quasar absorption outflows are conventionally determined using absorption troughs from excited states, a method hindered by severely saturated or self-blended absorption troughs. We propose a novel method to estimate the size of a broad absorption line (BAL) region which partly obscures an emission line region by assuming virialized gas in the emission region surrounding a supermassive black hole with known mass. When a spiky Lya1216 line emission is present at the flat bottom of the deep Nv1240 absorption trough, the size of BAL region can be estimated. We have …
We analyze the absorption and emission-line profiles produced by a set of simple, cool gas wind models motivated by galactic-scale outflow observations. We implement monte carlo radiative transfer techniques that track the propagation of scattered and fluorescent photons to generate 1D spectra and 2D spectral images. We focus on the MgII 2796,28303 doublet and FeII UV1 multiplet at ~2600A, but the results are applicable to other transitions that trace outflows (e.g. NaI, Lya, SiII). By design, the resonance transitions show blue-shifted absorption but one also predicts strong resonance and fin…
Gravitational microlensing is a powerful tool allowing one to probe the structure of quasars on sub-parsec scale. We report recent results, focusing on the broad absorption and emission line regions. In particular microlensing reveals the intrinsic absorption hidden in the P Cygni-type line profiles observed in the broad absorption line quasar H1413+117, as well as the existence of an extended continuum source. In addition, polarization microlensing provides constraints on the scattering region. In the quasar Q2237+030, microlensing differently distorts the H$α$ and CIV broad emission line pro…
Based on the results of chemical analysis and simulation of kerogens and immature coals, a large number of chemical structures carrying the 3.4-mum feature were studied by means of computer simulation codes. Further selection criteria were the integrated strength of the absorption lines in the aliphatic stretchings wavelength band, weak IR activity in the aromatic stretching band and absence of notable activity outside the astronomical UIBs (Unidentified Infrared Bands). Most of the structures that were retained can be classed as branched, short and oxygen-bridged CH_{2} chains, and naphtenic …
This paper presents a detection of significant velocity offset between emission and absorption lines for a dual core system in SDSS~J155708.82+273518.74 (= SDSS~J1557). The photometric image of SDSS~J1557 exhibits clear two cores with a projected separation of $\sim$2.2 arcseconds (4.9 kpc) determined by GALFIT. Based on the applications of the commonly accepted pPXF code with 636 theoretical SSP templates, the host galaxy contribution can be well determined. Then, the emission line features of SDSS~J1557 can be well measured after subtraction of host starlight. It is found that the velocity o…
The effect of radiation pressure compression (RPC) on ionized gas in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) likely sets the photoionized gas density structure. The photoionized gas free-free absorption and emission are therefore uniquely set by the incident ionizing flux. We use the photoionization code Cloudy RPC model results to derive the expected relations between the free-free emission and absorption properties and the distance from the AGN centre, for a given AGN luminosity. The free-free absorption frequency of RPC gas is predicted to increases from $\sim$100 MHz on the kpc scale, to $\sim$100 GH…
Context: Over the past thirty years a wealth of observations of CO and other molecules in optical/uv absorption in diffuse clouds has accumulated for which no comparable CO emission line data exist. Aims: To acquire mm-wave J=1-0 CO emission line profiles toward a substantial sample of commonly-studied optical/uv absorption line targets and to compare with the properties of the absorbing gas, especially the predicted emission line strengths. Methods: Using the ARO 12m telescope we observed mm-wavelength J=1-0 CO emission with spectral resolution R ~ 3x10^6 and spatial resolution 1' toward a sa…
We present the first detection of molecular emission from a galaxy selected to be near a projected background quasar using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The ALMA detection of CO(1$-$0) emission from the $z=0.101$ galaxy toward quasar PKS 0439-433 is coincident with its stellar disk and yields a molecular gas mass of $M_{\rm mol} \approx 4.2 \times 10^9 M_\odot$ (for a Galactic CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor), larger than the upper limit on its atomic gas mass. We resolve the CO velocity field, obtaining a rotational velocity of $134 \pm 11$ km s$^{-1}$, and a resultan…
As part of the search for the "dark molecular gas (DMG)," we report on the results of HCO$^+$ J = 1-0 absorption observations toward nine bright extragalactic millimeter wave continuum sources. The extragalactic sources are at high Galactic latitudes (|b| > 10$°$) and seen at small extinction (E(B-V) $\lesssim$ 0.1 mag). We have detected the HCO$^+$ absorption lines toward two sources, B0838+133 and B2251+158. The absorption toward B2251+158 was previously reported, while the absorption toward B0838+133 is a new detection. We derive hydrogen column densities or their upper limits toward the ni…
The physical origin of the near-ultraviolet MgII emission remains an under-explored domain, contrary to more typical emission lines detected in the spectra of star-forming galaxies. We explore the nebular and physical properties for a sample of 381 galaxies between 0.70 < z < 2.34 drawn from the MUSE Hubble Ultra Deep Survey. The spectra of these galaxies show a wide variety of profiles of the MgII 2796,2803 resonant doublet, from absorption to emission. We present a study on the main drivers for the detection of MgII emission in galaxy spectra. By exploiting photoionization models we verified…
Using a sample of $\simeq$144,000 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 14 we investigate the outflow properties, evident both in absorption and emission, of high-ionization Broad Absorption Line (BAL) and non-BAL quasars with redshifts 1.6 $\lesssim z \leq$ 3.5 and luminosities 45.3 $< \log_{10}(L_{bol}) < $ 48.2 erg s$^{-1}$. Key to the investigation is a continuum and emission-line reconstruction scheme, based on mean-field independent component analysis, that allows the kinematic properties of the CIV$λ$1550 emission line to be compared directly for both non-BAL and BAL qu…
Using the Low Dispersion Survey Spectrograph 3 at the Magellan II Clay Telescope, we target {candidate absorption host galaxies} detected in deep optical imaging {(reaching limiting apparent magnitudes of 23.0-26.5 in $g, r, i,$ and $z$ filters) in the fields of three QSOs, each of which shows the presence of high metallicity, high $N_{\rm HI}$ absorption systems in their spectra (Q0826-2230: $z_{abs}$=0.9110, Q1323-0021: $z_{abs}=0.7160$, Q1436-0051: $z_{abs}=0.7377, 0.9281$). We confirm three host galaxies {at redshifts 0.7387, 0.7401, and 0.9286} for two of the Lyman-$α$ absorption systems …
UV absorption studies with FUSE have observed H2 molecular gas in translucent and diffuse clouds. Observations of the 158 micron [C II] fine structure line with Herschel also trace the same H2 molecular gas in emission. We present [C II] observations along 27 lines of sight (LOSs) towards target stars of which 25 have FUSE H2 UV absorption. We detect [C II] emission features in all but one target LOS. For three Target LOSs, which are close to the Galactic plane, we also present position-velocity maps of [C II] emission observed by HIFI in on-the-fly spectral line mapping. We use the velocity r…
We analyze a set of optical-to-near-infrared long-slit nuclear spectra of 16 infrared-luminous spiral galaxies. All of the studied sources present H$_2$ emission, which reflects the star-forming nature of our sample, and they clearly display H I emission lines in the optical. Their continua contain many strong stellar absorption lines, with the most common features due to Ca I, Ca II, Fe I, Na I, Mg I, in addition to prominent absorption bands of TiO, VO, ZrO, CN and CO. We report a homogeneous set of equivalent width (EW) measurements for 45 indices, from optical to NIR species for the 16 sta…
We analyze VLT/X-shooter data for 7 quasars, where we study the relationships between their broad absorption line (BAL) and emission line outflows. We find: 1) the luminosity of the [OIII] $λ$5007 emission profile decreases with increasing electron number density (n$_e$) derived from the BAL outflow in the same quasar, 2) the measured velocity widths from the [OIII] emission features and CIV absorption troughs in the same object are similar, and 3) the mean radial velocity derived from the BAL outflow is moderately larger than the one from the [OIII] emission outflow. These findings can be exp…
We present the results of a targeted search for intervening HI absorption in six nearby, gas-rich galaxies using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The sightlines searched have impact parameters of 10-20 kpc. By targeting nearby galaxies we are also able to map their HI emission, allowing us to directly relate the absorption-line detection rate to the extended HI distribution. The continuum sightlines intersect the HI disk in four of the six galaxies, but no intervening absorption was detected. Of these four galaxies, we find that three of the non-detections are the result of the ba…
We present the results of a survey for intervening 21cm HI absorption in a sample of 10 nearby, gas-rich galaxies selected from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS). This follows the six HIPASS galaxies searched in previous work and completes our full sample. In this paper we searched for absorption along 17 sightlines with impact parameters between 6 and 46 kpc, making one new detection. We also obtained simultaneous HI emission-line data, allowing us to directly relate the absorption-line detection rate to the HI distribution. From this we find the majority of the non-detections in the curr…
Emission from metal resonant lines has recently emerged as a potentially powerful probe of the structure of galactic winds at low and high redshift. In this work, we present only the second example of spatially resolved observations of NaI D emission from a galactic wind in a nearby galaxy (and the first 3D observations at any redshift). F05189-2524, a nearby (z=0.043) ultra luminous infrared galaxy powered by a quasar, was observed with the integral field unit on the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) at Gemini North. NaI D absorption in the system traces dusty filaments on the near side…
A recently-discovered class of outflows, extremely high-velocity outflows (EHVOs), may be key to understanding feedback processes as it is likely the most powerful in terms of mass-energy. These EHVOs have been observed at redshifts 1.052 < z_em < 7.641, but the potential connection with outflows in emission had not been studied. We find that EHVOs, albeit their small numbers at the moment, appear to show distinct CIV and HeII properties. In particular, EHVOs are more predominant in quasars with large blueshifts of the CIV emission line, suggesting a connection between emission and absorption …
We report on a search for the [CII] 158 micron emission line from galaxies associated with four high-metallicity damped Ly-alpha absorbers (DLAs) at z ~ 4 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). We detect [CII] 158 micron emission from galaxies at the DLA redshift in three fields, with one field showing two [CII] emitters. Combined with previous results, we now have detected [CII] 158 micron emission from five of six galaxies associated with targeted high-metallicity DLAs at z ~ 4. The galaxies have relatively large impact parameters, ~16 - 45 kpc, [CII] 158 micron line…
New near- and far-ultraviolet (NUV and FUV) HST spectra of Mrk 231, the nearest quasar known, are combined with ground-based optical spectra to study the remarkable dichotomy between the FUV and NUV-optical spectral regions in this object. The FUV emission-line features are faint, broad, and highly blueshifted (up to ~7000 km/s), with no significant accompanying absorption. In contrast, the profiles of the NUV absorption features resemble those of the optical Na I D, He I, and Ca II H and K lines, exhibiting broad blue-shifted troughs that overlap in velocity space with the FUV emission-line f…
We used the ARO 12m antenna to observe emission from the J=1-0 lines of carbon monoxide, \hcop\ and HNC and the J=2-1 line of CS toward and around the continuum peak used for absorption studies and we compare them with CH, HNC, C\p\ and other absorption spectra from PRISMAS. We develop a kinematic analysis that allows a continuous description of the spectral properties and relates them to viewing geometry in the Galaxy. As for CH, HF, C\p, \hcop\ and other species observed in absorption, mm-wave emission in CO, \hcop, HNC and CS is continuous over the full velocity range expected for material …
We present MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) observations of the HI gas in the Klemola31 galaxy group ($z=0.029$), located along the line of sight to the radio-loud quasar PKS2020-370 ($z=1.048$). Four galaxies of the group are detected in HI emission, and HI absorption is also detected in front of PKS2020-370 in Klemola31A. The emission and absorption are somewhat compensating on the line of sight of the quasar, and the derived column density of the absorption appears under-estimated, with respect to the neighbouring emission. A symmetric tilted-ring model of Klemola31A, assuming the abso…
We study the dramatic decrease in iron absorption strength in the iron low-ionization broad absorption line quasar SDSS J084133.15+200525.8. We report on the continued weakening of absorption in the prototype of this class of variable broad absorption line quasar, FBQS J140806.2+305448. We also report a third example of this class, SDSS J123103.70+392903.6; unlike the other two examples, it has undergone an increase in observed continuum brightness (at 3000~Å rest-frame) as well as a decrease in iron absorption strength. These changes could be caused by absorber transverse motion or by ionizat…
Context: The Monte Carlo method is probably the most widely used approach to solve the radiative transfer problem, especially in a general 3D geometry. The physical processes of emission, absorption, and scattering are easily incorporated in the Monte Carlo framework. Net stimulated emission, or absorption with a negative cross section, does not fit this method, however. Aims: We explore alterations to the standard photon packet life cycle in Monte Carlo radiative transfer that allow the treatment of net stimulated emission without loss of generality or efficiency. Methods: We present the expl…
From the structure of PHL 293B and the physical properties of its ionizing cluster and based on results of hydrodynamic models, we point at the various events required to explain in detail the emission and absorption components seen in its optical spectrum. We ascribe the narrow and well centered emission lines, showing the low metallicity of the galaxy, to an HII region that spans through the main body of the galaxy. The broad emission line components are due to two off-centered supernova remnants evolving within the ionizing cluster volume and the absorption line profiles are due to a statio…
We present an overview of the Velocity Coordinate Spectrum (VCS), a new technique for studying astrophysical turbulence that utilizes the line-of-sight statistics of Doppler-broadened spectral lines. We consider the retrieval of turbulence spectra from emission intensity observations of both high and low spatial resolution and find that the VCS allows one to study turbulence even when the emitting turbulent volume is not spatially resolved. This opens interesting prospects for using the technique for extragalactic research. VCS developed for spectral emission lines is applicable to absorption …
Different physical processes in galaxy evolution, such as galaxy mergers that lead to coalescence of dual Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and outflows emanating from the narrow line region, can leave their imprint on the optical spectra of AGN in the form of double-peaked narrow emission lines. To investigate the neutral gas in the centres of such AGN, we have conducted a pilot survey of HI 21-cm absorption, using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT), in radio-loud AGN whose optical spectra show double-peaked [OIII] emission lines at z<=0.4 (median z~0.14). Among the eight sources…
One of the major science goals of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is to understand the role played by atomic hydrogen (HI) gas in the evolution of galaxies throughout cosmic time. The hyperfine transition line of the hydrogen atom at 21-cm is one of the best tools to detect and study the properties of HI gas associated with galaxies. In this article, we review our current understanding of HI gas and its relationship with galaxies through observations of the 21-cm line both in emission and absorption. In addition, we provide an overview of the HI science that will be possible with SKA and its …
Balmer absorption is a rare phenomenon in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). So far, only seven Balmer-absorption AGNs have been reported in literature. We here report the identification of SDSS\,J112611.63+425246 as a new Balmer-absorption AGN through our spectral analysis, and study the kinematics of its narrow emission-line region (NLR). We model the continuum by a linear combination of a starlight component, a powerlaw from the central AGN and the emission from the FeII complex. After the subtraction of the modeled continuum, each emission/absorption line is profiled by a sum of multi Gaussian…
We present a catalogue of candidate Hα emission and absorption line sources and blue objects in the Galactic Bulge Survey (GBS) region. We use a point source catalogue of the GBS fields (two strips of (l x b) = (6 x 1) degrees centred at b = 1.5 above and below the Galactic centre), covering the magnitude range 16 < r' < 22.5. We utilize (r'-i', r'-Hα) colour-colour diagrams to select Hα emission and absorption line candidates, and also identify blue objects (compared to field stars) using the r'-i' colour index. We identify 1337 Hα emission line candidates and 336 Hα absorption line candidate…
