On the basis of the perturbation theory in the fine structure constant $α$ and the ratio of the electron to muon masses we calculate one-loop vacuum polarization and electron vertex corrections and the nuclear structure corrections to the hyperfine splitting of the ground state of muonic helium atom $(μ e \ ^3_2He)$. We obtain total result for the ground state hyperfine splitting $Δν^{hfs}=4166.471$ MHz which improves the previous calculation of Lakdawala and Mohr due to the account of new corrections of orders $α^5$ and $α^6$. The remaining difference between our theoretical result and experimental value of the hyperfine splitting lies in the range of theoretical and experimental errors and requires the subsequent investigation of higher order corrections.
The recoil, vacuum polarization and electron vertex corrections of first and second orders in the fine structure constant $α$ and the ratio of electron to muon and electron to α-particle masses are calculated in the hyperfine splitting of the $1s^{(e)}_{1/2}2s^{(μ)}_{1/2}$ state of muonic helium atom (μe ^4_2He) on the basis of a perturbation theory. We obtain total result for the muonically excited state hyperfine splitting $Δν^{hfs}=4295.66$ MHz which improves previous calculations due to the account of new corrections and more accurate treatment of the electron vertex contribution.
The contribution from the axial-vector meson exchange to the potential of the muon-proton interaction in muonic hydrogen induced by anomalous axial-vector meson coupling to two photon state is calculated. It is shown that such contribution to the hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen is large and important for a comparison with precise experimental data. In the light of our result, the proton radius "puzzle" is discussed.

In the framework of the quasipotential method in quantum electrodynamics we calculate corrections to the nuclear structure proportional to $r_N^2$ from two-photon exchange amplitudes in the fine and hyperfine structure of P-states in muonic hydrogen, as well as the photon-photon interaction amplitudes, leading to the exchange of the axial vector meson. In constructing the quasipotential of the muon-nucleus interaction, we use the method of projection operators on states of two particles with a definite spin and total angular momentum. We present a high-precision calculation of the recoil--finite-size correction to the hyperfine splitting (HFS) in muonic and electronic hydrogen based on nucleon electromagnetic form factors obtained from dispersion theory. This will help guide the upcoming searches of the HFS transition in muonic hydrogen, and will allow a precise determination of the polarizability and Zemach radius contributions when this transition is found.
We present the derivation of the formulas for the proton structure-dependent terms in the hyperfine splitting of muonic hydrogen. We use compatible conventions throughout the calculations to derive a consistent set of formulas that reconcile differences between our results and some specific terms in earlier work. Convention conversion corrections are explicitly presented, which reduce the calculated hyperfine splitting by about 46 ppm. We also note that using only modern fits to the proton elastic form factors gives a smaller than historical spread of Zemach radii and leads to a reduced uncert…
We present a precise determination of the polarizability and other proton structure dependent contributions to the hydrogen hyperfine splitting, based heavily on the most recent published data on proton spin dependent structure functions from the EG1 experiment at the Jefferson Laboratory. As a result, the total calculated hyperfine splitting now has a standard deviation slightly under 1 part-per-million, and is about 1 standard deviation away from the measured value. We also present results for muonic hydrogen hyperfine splitting, taking care to ensure the compatibility of the recoil and pola…
We investigate the influence of the spatial extent of the proton magnetization and charge densities on the 2S hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen. The use of a non-perturbative relativistic Dirac approach leads to corrections of 15% to values obtained from the perturbative treatment encapsulated by the Zemach radius, which surpass the next-leading order contribution in the perturbation series by an order of magnitude.
Weak interaction contributions to hyperfine splitting and Lamb shift in light electronic and muonic atoms are calculated. We notice that correction to hyperfine splitting turns into zero for deuterium. Weak correction to the Lamb shift in hydrogen is additionally suppressed in comparison with other cases by a small factor $(1-4\sin^2θ_W)$.
The contribution of hadronic vacuum polarization to the hyperfine splitting of the muonic hydrogen ground state is calculated with the account of experimental data on the cross section of e^+e^-\to annihilation into hadrons and the dipole parameterization of electromagnetic proton form factors.
We reevaluate the Zemach, recoil and polarizability corrections to the hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen expressing them through the low-energy proton structure constants and obtain the precise values of the Zemach radius and two-photon exchange (TPE) contribution. The uncertainty of TPE correction to S energy levels in muonic hydrogen of 105 ppm exceeds the ppm accuracy level of the forthcoming 1S hyperfine splitting measurements at PSI, J-PARC and RIKEN-RAL.
We provide an accurate evaluation of the two-photon exchange correction to the hyperfine splitting of S energy levels in muonic hydrogen exploiting the corresponding measurements in electronic hydrogen. The proton structure uncertainty in the calculation of $α^5$ contribution is sizably reduced.
The contribution of the proton polarizability to the ground state hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen is evaluated on the basis of modern experimental and theoretical results on the proton polarized structure functions. The value of this correction is equal to 4.6(8)\cdot 10^{-4} times the Fermi splitting E_F.
We obtain a model-independent prediction for the two-photon exchange contribution to the hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen. We use the relation of the Wilson coefficients of the spin-dependent dimension-six four-fermion operator of NRQED applied to the electron-proton and to the muon-proton sectors. Their difference can be reliably computed using chiral perturbation theory, whereas the Wilson coefficient of the electron-proton sector can be determined from the hyperfine splitting in hydrogen. This allows us to give a precise model-independent determination of the Wilson coefficient for th…

A detailed discussion of the long-range one-pion exchange (Yukawa potential) contribution to the 2S hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen which had, until recently, been disregarded is presented. We evaluate the relevant vertex amplitudes, in particular $π^0μ^+μ^-$, combining low energy chiral expansions together with experimental data on $π^0$ and $η$ decays into two leptons. A value of $Δ{E}^π_{HFS}= -(0.09 \pm 0.06)\ μ\rm{eV}$ is obtained for this contribution.

We study the hydrogen and muonic hydrogen within an effective field theory framework. We perform the matching between heavy baryon effective theory coupled to photons and leptons and the relevant effective field theory at atomic scales. This matching can be performed in a perturbative expansion in alpha, 1/m_p and the chiral counting. We then compute the O(m_{l_i}^3 alpha^5/m_p^2 x logarithms) contribution (including the leading chiral logarithms) to the Hyperfine splitting and compare with experiment. They can explain about 2/3 of the difference between experiment and the pure QED prediction …

In the framework of the quasipotential method in quantum electrodynamics we calculate the contribution of light pseudoscalar (PS) and axial-vector (AV) mesons to the interaction operator of a muon and a proton in muonic hydrogen atom. The coupling of mesons with the muon is via two-photon intermediate state. The parametrization of the transition form factor of two photons into PS and AV mesons, based on the experimental data on the transition form factors and QCD asymptotics, is used. Numerical estimates of the contributions to the hyperfine structure of the spectrum of the S and P levels are …
Two recent experimental observations at the ATOMKI Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (regarding the angular emission pattern of electron-positron pairs from nuclear transitions from excited states in 8Be and 4He) indicate the possible existence of a particle of a rest mass energy of roughly 17 MeV. The so-called X17 particle constitutes a virtual state in the process, preceding the emission of the electron-positron pair. Based on the symmetry of the nuclear transitions ($1^+$ to $0^+$ and $0^-$ to $0^+$), the X17 could either be a vector, or a pseudoscalar particle. Here, we calcu…

We evaluate the two-photon exchange corrections to the Lamb shift and hyperfine splitting of S states in electronic hydrogen relying on modern experimental data and present the two-photon exchange on a neutron inside the electronic and muonic atoms. These results are relevant for the precise extraction of the isotope shift as well as in the analysis of the ground state hyperfine splitting in usual and muonic hydrogen.
We calculate cross sections for production of axial-vector $f_1(1285)$ mesons for double-tagged measurements of the $e^+ e^- \to e^+ e^- f_1(1285)$ reaction. Different $γ^* γ^* \to f_1(1285)$ vertices from the literature are used. Both integrated cross section as well as differential distributions are calculated. Predictions for a potential measurement at Belle II are presented. Quite different results are obtained for the different vertices proposed in the literature. Future measurements at $e^+ e^-$ colliders could test and/or constrain the $γ^* γ^* \to f_1 (a_1, f_1')$ vertices and associat…
From the comparison between the experimental and theoretical results for the energy difference between 2s1/2 and 2p1/2 states in hydrogen and hydrogen-like ions with different values of Z, we estimate bounds for the presence of an extra fractional dimension. These bounds are higher when we work with muonic hydrogen and muonic deuterium, which open the possibility that future measurements of the Lamb shift in muonic atoms with one electron and higher values of Z may show evidence of the extra dimension.
Two groups, ours (Mainz) and Bochum, have recently been re-evaluating the spin polarizabilities and spin structure functions at low $Q$, using the baryon chiral perturbation theory (B$χ$PT), the manifestly-covariant counterpart of the heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory (HB$χ$PT). Whilst the two groups agree that the B$χ$PT framework works better than HB$χ$PT in this sector, their quantitative results disagree in some of the quantities; most notably, the proton spin polarizabilities $γ_0$ and $δ_{LT}$. These discrepancies are especially intriguing in light of new experimental data coming f…
The complete contribution of diagrams with the light-by-light scattering to the Lamb shift is found for muonic hydrogen, deuterium and helium ion. The results are obtained in the static muon approximation and a part of the paper is devoted to the verification of this approximation and analysis of its uncertainty.
We consider one-loop light-by-light-scattering contributions to the Lamb shift of the $1s, 2s, 2p$ states in light muonic hydrogen like atoms at $Z\leq10$. The contributions are of the order $α^5m_μ$ (with diverse dependence on the nuclear charge $Z$). Those include the contributions of the so-called Wichmann-Kroll potential ($α(Zα)^4m_μ$), the virtual Delbrück scattering ($α^2(Zα)^3m_μ$), etc. The results are obtained in a nonrelativistic approximation. For the calculation of the virtual-Delbrück-scattering contribution, we have constructed an effective potential in the coordinate space which…

On the basis of quasipotential method in quantum electrodynamics we calculate nuclear finite size radiative corrections of order $α(Z α)^5$ to the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen and helium. To construct the interaction potential of particles, which gives the necessary contributions to the energy spectrum, we use the method of projection operators to states with a definite spin. Separate analytic expressions for the contributions of the muon self-energy, the muon vertex operator and the amplitude with spanning photon are obtained. We present also numerical results for these contributions using m…
We calculate the contribution from the two-photon exchange on the neutron to the hyperfine splitting of S energy levels. We update the value of the neutron Zemach radius, estimate total recoil and polarizability corrections. The resulting two-photon exchange in electronic atoms exceeds by an order of magnitude the leading Zemach term and has different sign both in electronic and muonic hydrogen.
Bound muons (also pions, kaons, etc) increase the fission barrier and produce some stabilizing effects for highly charged nuclei. If the binding energy of the muon exceeds $mc^2$, it becomes stable. The $1s$ state of a muon inside an exotic nucleus with atomic number $A= 5Z/2$ and such large charge $Z$ that the $1s$ energy $E$ is in the range $0\le E<-mc^2$ is considered.
We show that the value of the proton mass depends on each bound state of muonic or electronic hydrogen atom. The charged particle bound to the proton produces magnetic field inside the proton. This makes a change to the amount of chiral condensate inside the proton. The change gives rise to the shift in the value of the proton mass. Numerically, the shift in the $2S$ state of the muonic hydrogen atom can be of the order of $0.1$ meV. The effect may solve the puzzle of the proton radius.
The Breit equation with two electromagnetic form-factors is studied to obtain a potential with finite size corrections. This potential with proton structure effects includes apart from the standard Coulomb term, the Darwin term, retarded potentials, spin-spin and spin-orbit interactions corresponding to the fine and hyperfine structures in hydrogen atom. Analytical expressions for the hyperfine potential with form factors and the subsequent energy levels including the proton structure corrections are given using the dipole form of the form factors. Numerical results are presented for the finit…
We revisit the contribution of axial-vector mesons to the hyperfine splitting of muonic hydrogen. We focus our attention on the doubly-virtual asymptotic behavior of the relevant form factors of axial-vector mesons, together with their coupling to nucleons based on resonance saturation and short-distance constraints. Among others, we find significant differences with respect to previous studies, including an opposite sign and a $\sim50\%$ effect of the doubly-virtual high-energy behavior.
Recent progress in laser and x-ray spectroscopy of muonic atoms offers promising long-term possibilities at the intersection of atomic, nuclear and particle physics. In muonic hydrogen, laser spectroscopy measurements will determine the ground-state hyperfine splitting (HFS) and additionally improve the Lamb shift by a factor of 5. Precision spectroscopy with cryogenic microcalorimeters has the potential to significantly improve the charge radii of the light nuclei in the $Z=3-8$ range. Complementary progress in precision should be achieved on the theory of nucleon- and nuclear-structure effec…
Transition rates for coherent muon-electron conversion in muonic atoms, mu+N --> e+N, are computed for various types of muon number violating interactions. Attention is paid to relativistic atomic effects, Coulomb distortion, finite nuclear size, and nucleon distributions. Discrepancies with previously published results are pointed out and explained. Results are presented for several elements of current and future experimental interest.
The one-loop nuclear structure corrections of order (Z alpha)^5 to the Lamb shift and hyperfine splitting of the deuterium are calculated. The contribution of the deuteron structure effects to the isotope shift (ep)-(ed), (mu p)-(mu d) in the interval (1S - 2S) is obtained on the basis of modern experimental data on the deuteron electromagnetic form factors. The comparison with the similar contributions to the Lamb shift for electronic and muonic hydrogen shows, that the relative contribution due to the nucleus structure increases when passing from the hydrogen to the deuterium.
Laser spectroscopy of muonic atoms has been recently used to probe properties of light nuclei with unprecedented precision. We introduce nuclear effects in hydrogen-like atoms, nucleon structure quantities (form factors, structure functions, polarizabilities) and their effects in the Lamb shift and hyperfine splitting (HFS) of muonic hydrogen ($μ$H). Updated theory predictions for the Lamb shift and HFS in $μ$H are presented. We review the challenges of the ongoing effort to measure the ground-state HFS in $μ$H and its impact on our understanding of the nucleon spin structure. To narrow down t…
A relativistic wave equation for bound states of two fermions with arbitrary masses which are exposed to a magnetic field is derived from quantum electrodynamics. The interaction kernels are based upon the generalized invariant M-matrices for inter-fermion and fermion-field interactions. As an application we calculate the energy corrections in a weak homogeneous B field to obtain the Zeeman splitting of the hyperfine structure and g-factors in the lowest order (i.e. to alpha^4). Lande g-factors are presented for several of the first excited states of hydrogen, muonium, and muonic-hydrogen.
In this article, we investigate the $μ^-\to e^-X$ process in a muonic atom, where $X$ is a light neutral boson. By calculating the spectrum of the emitted electron for several cases, we discuss the model-discriminating power of the process. We report the strong model dependence of the spectrum near a high-energy endpoint. Our findings show that future experiments using muonic atoms are helpful to identify the properties of exotic bosons.
We relate the forward two-photon exchange (TPE) amplitudes to integrals of the inclusive lepton-proton scattering cross sections. These relations yield an alternative way for the evaluation of the TPE correction to hyperfine-splitting (HFS) in the hydrogen-like atoms with an equivalent to the standard approach (Iddings, Drell and Sullivan) result implying the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule. For evaluation of the individual effects (e.g., elastic contribution) our approach yields a distinct result. We compare both methods numerically on examples of the elastic contribution and the full TPE corre…
