Using the theory of the symmetry group for PDEs [15, 17], we derive the symmetry group G associated to surfaces PDE. Several group invariant solutions of the surfaces PDE are given by solving a reduced system of partial differential equations.
Using the symmetry group theory of second order PDEs, one finds the symmetry group associated to Tzitzeica surfaces partial differential equation. One studies the inverse problem and one shows that the Tzitzeica surfaces PDE is an Euler-Lagrange equation. One determines the variational symmetry group of the associated functional and one obtains the conservation laws of the Tzitzeica surfaces PDE. All these results shows that the Tzitzeica surfaces theory is strongly related to variational problems and hence it is a subject of global differential geometry.
We approach the construction of Backlund transformations for Darboux integrable hyperbolic partial differential equations in the plane through the reduction of exterior differential systems. For example it is shown that all the Backlund transformations in arXiv:0707.4408v2 can be constructed using symmetry reduction.
We prove that the natural principal parameters on a given Weingarten surface are also natural principal parameters for the parallel surfaces of the given one. As a consequence of this result we obtain that the natural PDE of any Weingarten surface is the natural PDE of its parallel surfaces. We show that the linear fractional Weingarten surfaces are exactly the surfaces satisfying a linear relation between their three curvatures. Our main result is classification of the natural PDE's of Weingarten surfaces with linear relation between their curvatures.
In this paper, we introduce a new look at Finsler surfaces. Landsberg surfaces are Finsler surfaces that are solutions of a system of non-linear partial differential equations. Considering the unicorn's Landsberg problem, we reduce this system to a single non-linear PDE which we call the Landsberg's PDE. By making use of the new look of Finsler surfaces, we solve the Landsberg's PDE and get a class of solutions. Moreover, we show that these solutions and their conformal transformations are Berwaldain.
The fact that minimal surfaces in the four-dimensional Euclidean space admit natural parameters implies that any minimal surface is determined uniquely up to a motion by two curvature functions, satisfying a system of two PDE's (the system of natural PDE's). In fact this solves the problem of Lund-Regge for minimal surfaces. Using the corresponding result for minimal surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space, we solve explicitly the system of natural PDE's, expressing any solution by virtue of two holomorphic functions in the Gauss plane. We find the relation between two pairs of holom…
A minimal space-like surface in Minkowski space-time is said to be of general type if it is free of degenerate points. The fact that minimal space-like surfaces of general type in Minkowski space-time admit canonical parameters of the first (second) type implies that any minimal space-like surface is determined uniquely up to a motion in space-time by the Gauss curvature and the normal curvature, satisfying a system of two PDE's (the system of natural PDE's). In fact this solves the problem of Lund-Regge for minimal space-like surfaces. Using canonical Weierstrass representations of minimal sp…
A minimal Lorentz surface in $\mathbb R^4_2$ is said to be of general type if its corresponding null curves are non-degenerate. These surfaces admit canonical isothermal and canonical isotropic coordinates. It is known that the Gauss curvature $K$ and the normal curvature $\varkappa$ of such a surface considered as functions of the canonical coordinates satisfy a system of two natural PDEs. Using the Weierstrass type representations of the corresponding null curves, we solve explicitly the system of natural PDEs, expressing any solution by means of four real functions of one variable. We obtai…
We discuss various compatibility criteria for overdetermined systems of PDEs generalizing the approach to formal integrability via brackets of differential operators. Then we give sufficient conditions that guarantee that a PDE possessing a Lie algebra of symmetries has invariant solutions with respect to this Lie algebra. These conditions hold for generic=nondegenerate pairs (equation, symmetry) in certain dimension range for the Lie algebra. Finally we discuss models of equations with large symmetry algebras, which eventually lead to integration in closed form.
This paper deals with symmetry phenomena for solutions of the Dirichlet problem involving semilinear PDEs on Riemannian domains. We shall present a rather general framework where the symmetry problem can be formulated and provide some evidence that this framework is completely natural by pointing out some results for stable solutions. The case of manifolds with density, and corresponding weighted Laplacians, is inserted in the picture from the very beginning.
Of all real Lagrangian--Grassmannians $LG(n,2n)$, only $LG(2,4)$ admits a distinguished (Lorentzian) conformal structure and hence is identified with the indefinite M\"obius space $S^{1,2}$. Using Cartan's method of moving frames, we study hyperbolic (timelike) surfaces in $LG(2,4)$ modulo the conformal symplectic group $CSp(4,R)$. This $CSp(4,R)$-invariant classification is also a contact-invariant classification of (in general, highly non-linear) second order scalar hyperbolic PDE in the plane. Via $LG(2,4)$, we give a simple geometric argument for the invariance of the general hyperbolic M…
Many methods for reducing and simplifying differential equations are known. They provide various generalizations of the original symmetry approach of Sophus Lie. Plenty of relations between them have been noticed and in this note a unifying approach will be discussed. It is rather close to the classical differential constraint method, but we provide certain rigorous results basing on recent advances in compatibility theory of non-linear overdetermined systems and homological methods for PDEs.
It is known that any maximal space-like surface without isotropic points in the four-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space with neutral metric admits locally geometric parameters which are special case of isothermal parameters. With respect to such parameters the surface is determined uniquely up to a motion by the Gauss curvature and the curvature of the normal connection, which satisfy a system of two PDE's (the system of natural PDE's). For any maximal space-like surface parametrized by canonical parameters we obtain a special Weierstrass representation -- canonical Weierstrass representation.…
We prove that, if $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is an open bounded starshaped domain of class $C^2$, the constancy over $\partial Ω$ of the function $$φ(y) = \int_0^{λ(y)} \prod_{j=1}^{n-1}[1-t κ_j(y)]\, dt$$ implies that $Ω$ is a ball. Here $k_j(y)$ and $λ(y)$ denote respectively the principal curvatures and the cut value of a boundary point $y \in \partial Ω$. We apply this geometric result to different symmetry questions for PDE's: an overdetermined system of Monge-Kantorovich type equations (which can be viewed as the limit as $p \to + \infty$ of Serrin's symmetry problem for the $p$-Laplacian),…
One considers a special class of PDEs systems and one determines the associated symmetry group. Particulary, for the Blair system, one finds the symmetry group. A solutions of the Blair system gives a conformally flat contact metric structure and also it defines a "force-free" model of solar physics. By using the symmetry groups theory, one shows that the known solutions are group-invariant solutions and one gives new solutions.
We study integrable non-degenerate Monge-Ampere equations of Hirota type in 4D and demonstrate that their symmetry algebras have a distinguished graded structure, uniquely determining the equations. This is used to deform these heavenly type equations into new integrable PDE of the second order with large symmetry pseudogroups. We classify the obtained symmetric deformations and discuss self-dual hyper-Hermitian geometry of their solutions, which encode integrability via the twistor theory.
This thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part we study completely integrable systems, and their underlying structures, in detail. We study their deformation theory and the different equivalence relations surrounding it. We motivate the definition of weak equivalence (found in the literature) by studying different interpretations of the concept `singular Lagrangian foliation'. Finally, we prove a normal form theorem inspired by the Moser path method. In the second part we study the deformation theory of a PDE with a pseudogroup of symmetries in general. We prove that a solution is ri…
If $\mathcal{M}=(M,\nabla)$ is an affine surface, let $\mathcal{Q}(\mathcal{M}):=\ker(\mathcal{H}+\frac1{m-1}ρ_s)$ be the space of solutions to the quasi-Einstein equation for the crucial eigenvalue. Let $\tilde{\mathcal{M}}=(M,\tilde\nabla)$ be another affine structure on $M$ which is strongly projectively flat. We show that $\mathcal{Q}(\mathcal{M})=\mathcal{Q}(\tilde{\mathcal{M}})$ if and only if $\nabla=\tilde\nabla$ and that $\mathcal{Q}(\mathcal{M})$ is linearly equivalent to $\mathcal{Q}(\tilde{\mathcal{M}})$ if and only if $\mathcal{M}$ is linearly equivalent to $\tilde{\mathcal{M}}$. …
We consider the problem of computing the integrable sub-distributions of the non-integrable Vessiot distribution of multi-dimensional second order partial differential equations (PDEs). We use Vessiot theory and solvable structures to find the largest integrable distributions contained in the Vessiot distribution associated to second order PDEs. In particular, we show how the solvable symmetry structure of the original PDE can be used to construct integrable sub-distributions leading to group invariant solutions of the PDE in two and more than two independent variables.
We study the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills (dHYM) equation, which is mirror to the special Lagrangian equation, from the variational point of view via an infinite dimensional GIT problem mirror to Thomas' GIT picture for special Lagrangians. This gives rise to infinite dimensional manifold $\mathcal{H}$ mirror to Solomon's space of positive Lagrangians. In the hypercritical phase case we prove the existence of smooth approximate geodesics, and weak geodesics with $C^{1,α}$ regularity. This is accomplished by proving sharp with respect to scale estimates for the Lagrangian phase operator on col…
Symmetry groups of PDEs allow to transform solutions continuously into other solutions. In this paper, we use this property for the observability analysis of nonlinear PDEs with input and output. Based on a differential-geometric representation of the nonlinear system, we derive conditions for the existence of special symmetry groups that do not change the trajectories of the input and the output. If such a symmetry group exists, every solution can be transformed into other solutions with the same input and output trajectories but different initial conditions, and this property can be used to …
