In this paper we study the problem of the optimal distribution of two materials on smooth submanifolds $M$ of dimension $d-1$ in $\mathbf R^d$ without boundary by means of the topological derivative. We consider a class of shape optimisation problems which are constrained by a linear partial differential equation on the surface. We examine the singular perturbation of the differential operator and material coefficients and derive the topological derivative. Finally, we show how the topological derivative in conjunction with a level set method on the surface can be used to solve the topology optimisation problem numerically.
We propose and analyze a numerical algorithm for solving a class of optimal control problems for learning-informed semilinear partial differential equations. The latter is a class of PDEs with constituents that are in principle unknown and are approximated by nonsmooth ReLU neural networks. We first show that a direct smoothing of the ReLU network with the aim to make use of classical numerical solvers can have certain disadvantages, namely potentially introducing multiple solutions for the corresponding state equation. This motivates us to devise a numerical algorithm that treats directly the…
In industry, shape optimization problems are of utter importance when designing structures such as aircraft, automobiles and turbines. For many of these applications, the structure changes over time, with a prescribed or non-prescribed movement. Therefore, it is important to capture these features in simulations when optimizing the design of the structure. Using gradient based algorithms, deriving the shape derivative manually can become very complex and error prone, especially in the case of time-dependent non-linear partial differential equations. To ease this burden, we present a high-level…
Machine learning methods for solving nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) are hot topical issues, and different algorithms proposed in the literature show efficient numerical approximation in high dimension. In this paper, we introduce a class of PDEs that are invariant to permutations, and called symmetric PDEs. Such problems are widespread, ranging from cosmology to quantum mechanics, and option pricing/hedging in multi-asset market with exchangeable payoff. Our main application comes actually from the particles approximation of mean-field control problems. We design deep learning…
A novel way of computing the shape derivative for a class of non-smooth PDEs and its impact on deriving necessary conditions for locally optimal shapes
The Partial Integral Equation (PIE) framework was developed to computationally analyze linear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) where the PDE is first converted to a PIE and then the analysis problem is solved by solving operator-valued optimization problems. Previous works on the PIE framework focused on the analysis of PDEs with spatial derivatives up to $2^{nd}$-order. In this paper, we extend the class of PDEs by including integral terms and performing stability analysis using the PIE framework. More specifically, we show that PDEs with the integral terms where the integration is with …
This article provides a brief review of recent developments on two nonlocal operators: fractional Laplacian and fractional time derivative. We start by accounting for several applications of these operators in imaging science, geophysics, harmonic maps and deep (machine) learning. Various notions of solutions to linear fractional elliptic equations are provided and numerical schemes for fractional Laplacian and fractional time derivative are discussed. Special emphasis is given to exterior optimal control problems with a linear elliptic equation as constraints. In addition, optimal control pro…
We prove a rate of convergence for the $N$-particle approximation of a second-order partial differential equation in the space of probability measures, like the Master equation or Bellman equation of mean-field control problem under common noise. The rate is of order $1/N$ for the pathwise error on the solution $v$ and of order $1/\sqrt{N}$ for the $L^2$-error on its $L$-derivative $\partial_μv$. The proof relies on backward stochastic differential equations techniques.
In this paper we study an abstract framework for computing shape derivatives of functionals subject to PDE constraints. We revisit the Lagrangian approach using the implicit function theorem in an abstract setting tailored for applications to shape optimization. This abstract framework yields practical formulae to compute the derivative of a shape functional, the material derivative of the state, and the adjoint state. Furthermore, it allows to gain insight on the duality between the material derivative of the state and the adjoint state. We show several applications of our main result to the …
In this paper we introduce the topological state derivative for general topological dilatations and explore its relation to standard optimal control theory. We show that for a class of partial differential equations, the shape dependent state variable can be differentiated with respect to the topology, thus leading to a linearised system resembling those occurring in standard optimal control problems. However, a lot of care has to be taken when handling the regularity of the solutions of this linearised system. In fact, we should expect different notions of (very) weak solutions, depending on …
While topological derivatives have proven useful in applications of topology optimisation and inverse problems, their mathematically rigorous derivation remains an ongoing research topic, in particular in the context of nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) constraints. We present a systematic yet formal approach for the computation of topological derivatives of a large class of PDE-constrained topology optimization problems with respect to arbitrary inclusion shapes. Scalar and vector-valued as well as linear and nonlinear elliptic PDE constraints are considered in two and three space…
In this paper, we perform a rigourous version of shape and topological derivatives for optimizations problems under constraint Helmoltz problems. A shape and topological optimization problem is formulated by introducing cost functional. We derive first by considering the lagradian method the shape derivative of the functional. It is also proven a topological derivative with the same approach. An application to several unconstrained shape functions arising from differential geometry are also given.
The aim of this article is to elaborate and rigorously analyze a topological derivative based imaging framework for locating an electromagnetic inclusion of diminishing size from boundary measurements of the tangential component of scattered magnetic field at a fixed frequency. The inverse problem of inclusion detection is formulated as an optimization problem in terms of a filtered discrepancy functional and the topological derivative based imaging functional obtained therefrom. The sensitivity and resolution analysis of the imaging functional is rigorously performed. It is substantiated that…
The goal of this paper is to give a comprehensive and short review on how to compute the first and second order topological derivative and potentially higher order topological derivatives for PDE constrained shape functionals. We employ the adjoint and averaged adjoint variable within the Lagrangian framework and compare three different adjoint based methods to compute higher order topological derivatives. To illustrate the methodology proposed in this paper, we then apply the methods to a linear elasticity model. We compute the first and second order topological derivative of the linear elast…
