We present a catalog of 2,990 extended sources in a 1deg x1deg area centered on M33 using the MegaCam camera on the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii telescope (CFHT). The catalog includes 599 new candidate stellar clusters, 204 previously confirmed clusters, 1,969 likely background galaxies and 218 unknown extended objects. We present ugriz integrated magnitudes of the candidates and confirmed star clusters as well as full width at half maximum, ellipticity and stellarity. Based on the properties of the confirmed star clusters, we select a sub-sample of highly probable clusters composed of 246 objects. The integrated photometry of the complete cluster catalog reveals a wide range of colors from -0.4 < (g-r) < 1.5 and -1.0 < (r-i) < 1.0 with no obvious cluster subpopulations. Comparisons with models of simple stellar populations suggest a large range of ages some as old as ~ 10 Gyrs. In addition, we find a sequence in the color-color diagrams that deviates from the expected direction of evolution. This feature could be associated with very young clusters (< 10^7 yrs) possessing significant nebular emission. Analysis of the radial density distribution suggests that the cluster system of M33 has suffered from significant depletion possibly due to interactions with M31. We also detect a gap in the cluster distribution in the color-color diagram at (g-r) ~ 0.3 and (u-g) ~ 0.8. This gap could be interpreted as an evolutionary effect. This complete catalog provides promising targets for deep photometry and high resolution spectroscopy to study the structure and star formation history of M33.
Our goal was to compare the open cluster photometric distance scale of the global survey of star clusters in the Milky Way (MWSC) with the distances derived from trigonometric parallaxes from the Gaia DR1/TGAS catalogue and to investigate to which degree and extent both scales agree. We compared the parallax-based and photometry-based distances of 5743 cluster stars selected as members of 1118 clusters based on their kinematic and photometric MWSC membership probabilities. We found good overall agreement between trigonometric and photometric distances of open cluster stars. The residuals betwe…
We introduce a new binary detection technique, Binary INformation from Open Clusters using SEDs (binocs), which we show is able to determine reliable stellar multiplicity and masses over a much larger mass range than current approaches. This new technique determines accurate component masses of binary and single systems of the open clusters main sequence by comparing observed magnitudes from multiple photometric filters to synthetic star spectral energy distributions (SEDs) allowing systematically probing the binary population for low mass stars in clusters for 8 well-studied open clusters. We…
Open clusters are a useful tool when investigating several topics connected with stellar evolution; for example the age or distance can be more accurately determined than for field stars. However, one important parameter, the metallicity, is only known for a marginal percentage of open clusters. We aim at a consistent set of parameters for the open clusters investigated in our photometric Delta-a survey of chemically peculiar stars. Special attention is paid to expanding our knowledge of cluster metallicities and verifying their scale. Making use of a previously developed method based on norma…
We obtained new multicolour photometry of close binary stars in the young open cluster M35, the solar-age open cluster M67, and the globular cluster M71. New observations have been carried out at the TÜBİTAK National Observatory (TUG) by using the 100cm (T100) telescope. We present observational results for eclipsing binary systems in the selected Galactic clusters. New accurate light curves for 2MASS J19532554 + 1851175, 2MASS J19533427 + 1844047, 2MASS J06092044 + 2415155, and AH Cnc were obtained. The light curves were analysed and we derived some of the orbital parameters of the systems.
The global survey of star clusters in the Milky Way (MWSC) is a comprehensive list of 3061 objects that provides, among other parameters, distances to clusters based on isochrone fitting. The Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) catalogue, which is a part of Gaia data release 1 (Gaia DR1), delivers accurate trigonometric parallax measurements for more than 2 million stars, including those in star clusters. We compare the open cluster photometric distance scale with the measurements given by the trigonometric parallaxes from TGAS to evaluate the consistency between these values. The average p…
We present a photometric and kinematical analysis of two and poorly studied open clusters; Koposov 12 (FSR 802) and Koposov 43 (FSR 848) by using cross-matched data from PPMXL and Gaia DR2 catalog. We use astrometric parameters to identify 285 and 310 cluster members for Koposov 12 and Koposov 43, respectively. Using the extracted member candidates and isochrone fitting to near-infrared (J, H, Ks) and Gaia DR2 bands (G, GBP, GRP), and Color Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs), we have estimated ages: log (age/yr) = 9.00 +/- 0.20 and 9.50 +/- 0.20, and distances d = 1850 +/- 43 pc and 2500 +/- 50 pc for …
In the second paper of the series we continue the investigation of open cluster fundamental parameters using a robust global optimization method to fit model isochrones to photometric data. We present optical UBVRI CCD photometry (Johnsons-Cousins system) observations for 24 neglected open clusters, of which 14 have high quality data in the visible obtained for the first time, as a part of our ongoing survey being carried out in the 0.6m telescope of the Pico dos Dias Observatory in Brazil. All objects were then analyzed with a global optimization tool developed by our group which estimates th…
We show the preliminary analysis of some Galactic stellar clusters (GSCls) candidates and the results of the analysis of two new interesting GSCls found in the "VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea" (VVV) Survey. The VVV photometric data are being used also to improve the knowledge of the Galactic structure. The photometric data are obtained with the new automatic photometric pipeline VVV-SkZ_pipeline.
We present a study of 7 southern open clusters based on UBVRI CCD photomety (Johnsons-Cousins system) and Gaia DR2 data. Dias 4, Dias 6 and four other clusters had UBVRI photometric observations determined for the first time. From the observational UBVRI data we obtained photometric membership probability estimates and, using the proper motions from the UCAC5 catalog, we also determined the kinematic membership. From Gaia DR2 astrometric data we determine the stellar membership using proper motions and parallaxes, taking into account the full covariance matrix. For both independent sets of dat…
We present early results from a detailed analysis of the BSS population in Galactic GCs based on HST data.Using proper motion cleaning of the color-magnitude diagrams we construct a large catalog of BSSs and study some population properties.Stellar evolutionary models are used to find stellar mass and age estimates for the BSS populations in order to establish constraints related to the dynamical interactions in which they may have formed.
We investigate the multiple stellar populations of the globular clusters M3, M5, M13, and M71 using $g^\prime$ and intermediate-band CN-$λ3883$ photometry obtained with the WIYN 0.9-m telescope on Kitt Peak. We find a strong correlation between red giant stars' CN$-g^\prime$ colors and their spectroscopic sodium abundances, thus demonstrating the efficacy of the two-filter system for stellar population studies. In all four clusters, the observed spread in red giant branch CN$-g^\prime$ colors is wider than that expected from photometric uncertainty, confirming the well-known chemical inhomogen…
We present here our first series in studying the astrophysical parameters of the open cluster "Ruprecht 15" using PPMXL1 database. In this context, the photometric, astrometry and statistical parameters for this cluster (limited radius, core and tidal radii, distances, membership, reddening, age, luminosity function, mass function, total mass, and the dynamical relaxation time) are determined for the first time.
We present here the astrophysical parameters of three stellar open cluster candidates using PPMXL1 database. In this study, the main photometric, astrometry and statistical parameters of Ruprecht 13, Ruprecht 16 and Ruprecht 24 are estimated for the first time.
In this paper we describe the photometric and spectroscopic properties of multiple populations in seven northern globular clusters. In this study we employ precise ground based photometry from the private collection of Stetson, space photometry from the Hubble Space Telescope, literature abundances of Na and O, and APOGEE survey abundances for Mg, Al, C, and N. Multiple populations are identified by their position in the CU,B,I -V pseudo-CMD and confirmed with their chemical composition determined using abundances. We confirm the expectation from previous studies that the RGB in all seven clus…
We present wide field JHKs photometry of 16 Galactic globular clusters located towards the Galactic bulge, calibrated on the 2MASS photometric system. Differential reddening corrections and statistical field star decontamination are employed for all of these clusters before fitting fiducial sequences to the cluster red giant branches (RGBs). Observed values and uncertainties are reported for several photometric features, including the magnitude of the RGB bump, tip, the horizontal branch (HB) and the slope of the upper RGB. The latest spectroscopically determined chemical abundances are used t…
The main goal of this study is to compile a catalogue including the fundamental parameters of a complete sample of 277 star clusters (SCs) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) observed in the Washington photometric system, including 82 clusters very recently studied by us. All the clusters' parameters such as radii, deprojected distances, reddenings, ages and metallicities have been obtained by appyling essentially the same procedures which are briefly described here. We have used empirical cumulative distribution functions to examine age, metallicity and deprojected distance distributions for …
Employing photometric rotation periods for solar-type stars in NGC 1039 [M 34], a young, nearby open cluster, we use its mass-dependent rotation period distribution to derive the cluster's age in a distance independent way, i.e., the so-called gyrochronology method. We present an analysis of 55 new rotation periods, using light curves derived from differential photometry, for solar type stars in M 34. We also exploit the results of a recently-completed, standardized, homogeneous BVIc CCD survey of the cluster in order to establish photometric cluster membership and assign B-V colours to each ph…
We present JHK near-infrared photometric study for the old open cluster (OC) Trumpler 5 (Tr 5), based on the 2MASS data. From the color-magnitude diagrams of Tr 5, we have located the position of the red giant clump (RGC) stars, and used the mean magnitude of the RGC stars in K-band to estimate the distance to Tr 5, d = 3.1 +/- 0.1 kpc ((m-M)_0 = 12.46 +/- 0.04). From fitting the theoretical isochrones of Padova group, we have estimated the reddening, metallicity, and age : E(B-V) = 0.64 +/- 0.05, [Fe/H] = -0.4 +/- 0.1 dex, and t =2.8 +/- 0.2 Gyr (log t=9.45 +/- 0.04), respectively. These para…
We present photometric analysis of the two W UMa type binaries identified in the field of distant open star cluster NGC6866. Although these systems, namely ID487 and ID494, were reported in the Joshi et al. (2012), but a detailed study of these stars has not been carried out earlier. The orbital periods of these stars are found to be 0.415110+/-0.000001 day and 0.366709+/-0.000004 day, respectively. Based on the photometric and infrared colours, we find their respective spectral types as K0 and K3. The photometric light variations of both the stars show O'Connell effect which could be explaine…
This study reports the first comprehensive astrometric, photometric and kinematical analysis of four newly discovered open clusters; namely QC1, QC2, QC3, and QC4, using astrometric and photometric data from the most recent Gaia EDR3 for G<17 mag. Utilizing the ASteCA code, we identified the most probable (P>=50%) star candidates and found the numbers of star members (N) to be 118 (QC1), 142(QC2), 210 (QC3), and 110 (QC4). By fitting King's density profile to the cluster's RDPs, we found the internal structural parameters of each cluster such as the cluster radii that are in the range 7.00 to …
We present UBVRcIc photometric study of three intermediate age open star clusters NGC 381, NGC 2360, and Berkeley 68 (Be 68). We examine the cluster membership of stars using recently released Gaia DR2 proper motions and obtain a total of 116, 332, and 264 member stars in these three clusters. The mean reddening of E(B - V) = 0.36+/-0.04, 0.08+/-0.03, and 0.52+/-0.04 mag are found in the direction of these clusters where we observe an anomalous reddening towards NGC 381. We fitted the solar metallicity isochrones to determine age and distance of the clusters which are found to be log(Age) = 8.…
The astrophysical parameters of four unstudied open star cluster candidates - Harvard 9, Ivanov 2, Ivanov 7, and Ivanov 9 - have been estimated for the first time using the PPMXL database. The stellar density distributions and color-magnitude diagrams for each cluster are used to determine the geometrical structure (cluster center, limited radius, core and tidal radii, the distances from the Sun, from the Galactic center and from the Galactic plane). Also, the main photometric parameters (age, distance modulus, color excesses, membership, total mass, relaxation time, luminosity and mass functi…
We have performed a near-infrared photometric monitoring of 39 galactic young star clusters and star-forming regions, known as {\em NIP of Stars}, between the years 2009--2011, using the Swope telescope at Las Campanas Observatory (Chile) and the RetroCam camera. The primary objective of the campaign is to perform a census of photometric variability of such clusters and to discover massive eclipsing binary stars. In this work, we describe the general idea, the implementation of the survey, and the first preliminary results of some of the observed clusters. This monitoring program is complement…
Here, we conducted a photometric and astrometric study of two open stellar clusters Dolidze-18 and Ruprecht-70, which have not been photometrically studied before. The most important thing for using Gaia (DR2) database lies in the positions, parallax, and proper motions, which make us split cluster members from the field ones and get precise astrophysical parameters. On studying the radial density profiles of these clusters, the actual sizes are estimated and found larger using Gaia. From the color-magnitude diagrams and theoretical isochrones, we simultaneously determined the ages, distance m…
The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is providing precise time-series photometry for most star clusters in the solar neighborhood. Using the TESS images, we have begun a Cluster Difference Imaging Photometric Survey (CDIPS), in which we are focusing both on stars that are candidate cluster members, and on stars that show indications of youth. Our aims are to discover giant transiting planets with known ages, and to provide light curves suitable for studies in stellar astrophysics. For this work, we made 159,343 light curves of candidate young stars, across 596 distinct clusters. Ea…
This research focuses on identifying high redshift galaxies from LABOCA(LArge APEX BOlometer CAmera) and SPIRE(The Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver) maps towards proto-cluster candidates initially selected from the SPT (South pole telescope) survey. Based on the Multi-Gaussian fitting algorithm, we cross-match all significant LABOCA sources at SPIRE wavelengths based on their coordinates and signal to noise ratio to derive their photometry at 250, 350, 500 and 870 $μm$. We use this information to calculate a photometric redshift for SPT sources towards cluster fields. The code was dev…
The BVRcIc CCD photometry in the fields of six open clusters toward the Perseus spiral arm is presented. These data along with JHKs magnitudes taken from 2MASS catalog, have been used to determine cluster's ages, distances and color excesses. In addition, the gaps in mass function of Be 97, King 12 and NGC 7788 clusters have been revealed in mass intervals of 1.3-1.5, 1.4-1.6 and 1.5-1.7 solar masses, respectively.
The astrophysical parameters of the open star cluster Mayer 3 have been estimated using the Newtonian focus (f/4.84) of the 1.88 m Telescope of Kottamia Observatory in Egypt. The VRI observations have been carried out down to a limiting magnitude of V ~ 20 mag. To emphasize the main astrophysical parameters, Near-Infra Red, Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS-JHK) database has been used. Analyzing the color-magnitude diagrams and radial density distribution of Mayer 3, the cluster's age, reddening, distance from the Sun, the limited border, core and tidal radii are evaluated. The photometrical me…
We present Hubble multi-wavelength photometric catalogs, including (up to) 17 filters with the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3 from the ultra-violet to near-infrared for the Hubble Frontier Fields and associated parallels. We have constructed homogeneous photometric catalogs for all six clusters and their parallels. To further expand these data catalogs, we have added ultra-deep $K_{S}$-band imaging at 2.2~\micron\ from the Very Large Telescope HAWK-I and Keck-I MOSFIRE instruments. We also add post-cryogenic \spitzer\ imaging at 3.6~\micron\ and 4.5~\micron\ with the Infra…
We present a photometric study of five open clusters (Czernik 5, Alessi 53, Berkeley 49, Berkeley 84, and Pfleiderer 3) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The position and size of these clusters are determined using the radial number density profiles of the stars, and the member stars of the clusters are selected using the proper motion data in the literature. We estimate the reddening, distance, and age of the clusters based on the isochrone fitting in the color-magnitude diagram. The foreground reddenings for these clusters are estimated to be E(B-V) = 0.71 - 1.55 mag. The distances to these c…
We introduce Z-Sequence, a novel empirical model that utilises photometric measurements of observed galaxies within a specified search radius to estimate the photometric redshift of galaxy clusters. Z-Sequence itself is composed of a machine learning ensemble based on the k-nearest neighbours algorithm. We implement an automated feature selection strategy that iteratively determines appropriate combinations of filters and colours to minimise photometric redshift prediction error. We intend for Z-Sequence to be a standalone technique but it can be combined with cluster finders that do not intri…
We develop a novel method to explore the galaxy-halo connection using the galaxy imaging surveys by modeling the projected two-point correlation function measured from the galaxies with reasonable photometric redshift measurements. By assuming a Gaussian form of the photometric redshift errors, we are able to simultaneously constrain the halo occupation distribution (HOD) models and the effective photometric redshift uncertainties. Tests with mock galaxy catalogs demonstrate that this method can successfully recover (within $\sim 1σ$) the intrinsic large-scale galaxy bias, as well as the HOD m…

We present the fiducial sequences of a sample of Galactic star clusters in the five bands of the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) photometric system (g_P1, r_P1, i_P1, z_P1, y_P1). These empirical sequences -- which include the red giant and sub-giant branches, the main sequence, and the horizontal branch -- were defined from deep colour-magnitude diagrams reaching below the oldest main-sequence turn-offs of 13 globular and 3 old open clusters covering a wide range of metallicities (-2.4 < [Fe/H] < +0.4). We find excellent agreement for the nine clusters in common with previous studies in similar photometric…
We present the study of nineteen low X-ray luminosity galaxy clusters (L$_X \sim$ 0.5--45 $\times$ $10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$), selected from the ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counters (PSPC) Pointed Observations (Vikhlinin et al. 1998) and the revised version of Mullis et al. (2003) in the redshift range of 0.16 to 0.7. This is the introductory paper of a series presenting the sample selection, photometric and spectroscopic observations and data reduction. Photometric data in different passbands were taken for eight galaxy clusters at Las Campanas Observatory; three clusters at Cerro Tolo…
We present a multi-band analysis of the six Hubble Frontier Field clusters and their parallel fields, producing catalogs with measurements of source photometry and photometric redshifts. We release these catalogs to the public along with maps of intracluster light and models for the brightest galaxies in each field. This rich data set covers a wavelength range from 0.2 to 8 $μm$, utilizing data from the Hubble Space Telescope, Keck Observatories, Very Large Telescope array, and Spitzer Space Telescope. We validate our products by injecting into our fields and recovering a population of synthet…
Despite their reputation as being "red and dead", the unique environment inhabited by Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) can often lead to a self-regulated feedback cycle between radiatively cooling intracluster gas and star formation and AGN activity in the BCG. However the prevalence of "active" BCGs, and details of the feedback involved, are still uncertain. We have performed an optical, UV and Mid-IR photometric analysis of the BCGs in 981 clusters at 0.03 < z < 0.5, selected from the ROSAT All Sky Survey. Using Pan-STARRS PS1 3pi, GALEX and WISE survey data we look for BCGs with photometri…
NGC 2419 is one of the remotest star clusters in the Milky Way halo and its exact nature is yet unclear: While it has traits reminiscent of a globular cluster (GC), its large radius and suggestions of an abundance spread have fueled the discussion about its origin in an extragalactic environment, possibly the remnants of the accretion of a dwarf galaxy. Here, we present first results from deep intermediate-band photometry of NGC 2419, which enables us to search for chemical (light element) abundance variations, metallicity spreads, and thus multiple stellar populations through well calibrated …
We present the broad band UBVI CCD photometric investigations in the region of the two open clusters Haffner 11 and Czernik 31. The radii of the clusters are determined as 3.5 arcmin and 3.0 arcmin for Haffner 11 and Czernik 31 respectively. Using two colour (U-B) versus (B-V) diagram we determine the reddening E(B-V) = 0.50+/-0.05 mag and 0.48+/-0.05 mag for the cluster Haffner 11 and Czernik 31 respectively. Using 2MASS JHKs and optical data, we determined E(J-K) = 0.27+/-0.06 mag and E(V-K) = 1.37+/-0.06 for Haffner 11 and E(J-K) = 0.26+/-0.08 mag and E(V-K) = 1.32+/-0.08 mag for Czernik 31…

We present results from Johnson $UBV$, Kron-Cousins $RI$ and Washington $CT_1T_2$ photometries for seven van den Bergh-Hagen (vdBH) open clusters, namely, vdBH\,1, 10, 31, 72, 87, 92, and 118. The high-quality, multi-band photometric data sets were used to trace the cluster stellar density radial profiles and to build colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and colour-colour (CC) diagrams from which we estimated their structural parameters and fundamental astrophysical properties. The clusters in our sample cover a wide age range, from $\sim$ 60 Myr up to 2.8 Gyr, are of relatively small size ($\sim$…
We present UBVRI photometry of stars in the field of the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 559. By determining the stellar membership probabilities derived through a photometric and kinematic study of the cluster, we identify the 22 most probable cluster members. These are used to obtain robust cluster parameters. The mean proper motion of the cluster is μ_x = -3.29+/-0.35, μ_y = -1.24+/-0.28 mas/yr. The radial distribution of the stellar surface density gives a cluster radius of 4'.5+/-0'.2 (3.2+/-0.2 pc). By fitting solar metallicity stellar isochrones to the colour-colour and colour-magnitu…
Embedded clusters are groups of stars which have not dispersed yet the residual of the parental cloud where they were born so getting precise distances and properties of these groups turns out to be an essential task. We present results for five embedded clusters: [DBS2003]5, [DBS2003]60, [DBS2003]98, [DBS2003]116 and [DBS2003]117. Results come from a combination of deep CCD UBVI photometry suitable to identify blue faint stars and infrared information from available surveys. In turn photometry was linked with proper motions and parallaxes from Gaia DR2. Each object was treated in a multi-spac…
We present CCD BV and JHK$_{s}$ 2MASS photometric data for the open cluster NGC 1513. We observed 609 stars in the direction of the cluster up to a limiting magnitude of $V\sim19$ mag. The star count method shows that the centre of the cluster lies at $α_{2000}=04^{h}09^{m}36^{s}$, $δ_{2000}=49^{\circ}28^{'}43^{''}$ and its angular size is $r=10$ arcmin. The optical and near-infrared two-colour diagrams reveal the colour excesses in the direction of the cluster as $E(B-V)=0.68\pm0.06$, $E(J-H)=0.21\pm0.02$ and $E(J-K_{s})=0.33\pm0.04$ mag. These results are consistent with normal interstellar …
We present AMICO (Adaptive Matched Identifier of Clustered Objects), a new algorithm for the detection of galaxy clusters in photometric surveys. AMICO is based on the Optimal Filtering technique, which allows to maximise the signal-to-noise ratio of the clusters. In this work we focus on the new iterative approach to the extraction of cluster candidates from the map produced by the filter. In particular, we provide a definition of membership probability for the galaxies close to any cluster candidate, which allows us to remove its imprint from the map, allowing the detection of smaller struct…
We present a study of complexes of young massive star clusters (YMCs), embedded in extragalactic giant HII regions, based on the coupling of spectroscopic with photometric and spectrophotometric observations of about 100 star forming regions in seven spiral galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 783, NGC 2336, NGC 6217, NGC 6946, NGC 7331, and NGC 7678). The complete observational database has been observed and accumulated within the framework of our comprehensive study of extragalactic star forming regions. The current paper presents the last part of either unpublished or refreshed photometric and spectropho…
The XMM Cluster Archive Super Survey (X-CLASS) is a serendipitously-detected X-ray-selected sample of 845 galaxy clusters based on 2774 XMM archival observations and covering approximately 90 deg$^2$ spread across the high-Galactic latitude ($|b|>20$ deg) sky. The primary goal of this survey is to produce a well-selected sample of galaxy clusters on which cosmological analyses can be performed. This article presents the photometric redshift followup of a high signal-to-noise subset of 266 of these clusters with declination $δ<+20$ deg with GROND, a seven channel ($grizJHK$) simultaneous imager…
We describe a new method (Poisson Probability Method, PPM) to search for high redshift galaxy clusters and groups by using photometric redshift information and galaxy number counts. The method relies on Poisson statistics and is primarily introduced to search for Mpc-scale environments around a specific beacon. The PPM is tailored to both the properties of the FR I radio galaxies in the Chiaberge et al. (2009) sample, that are selected within the COSMOS survey, and on the specific dataset used. We test the efficiency of our method of searching for cluster candidates against simulations. Two di…
This work presents an approach (fitCMD) designed to obtain a comprehensive set of astrophysical parameters from colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of star clusters. Based on initial mass function (IMF) properties taken from isochrones, fitCMD searches for the values of total (or cluster) stellar mass, age, global metallicity, foreground reddening, distance modulus, and magnitude-dependent photometric completeness that produce the artificial CMD that best reproduces the observed one; photometric scatter is also taken into account in the artificial CMDs. Inclusion of photometric completeness prove…
Cosmological constraints from galaxy clusters rely on accurate measurements of the mass and internal structure of clusters. An important source of systematic uncertainty in cluster mass and structure measurements is the secure selection of background galaxies that are gravitationally lensed by clusters. This issue has been shown to be particular severe for faint blue galaxies. We therefore explore the selection of faint blue background galaxies, by reference to photometric redshift catalogs derived from the COSMOS survey and our own observations of massive galaxy clusters at z~0.2. We show tha…
We present a new technique to fit color-magnitude diagrams of open clusters based on the Cross-Entropy global optimization algorithm. The method uses theoretical isochrones available in the literature and maximizes a weighted likelihood function based on distances measured in the color-magnitude space. The weights are obtained through a non parametric technique that takes into account the star distance to the observed center of the cluster, observed magnitude uncertainties, the stellar density profile of the cluster among others. The parameters determined simultaneously are distance, reddening…
