We investigate the capability of the UBVRIJHK photometric system to quantify star clusters in terms of age, metallicity and color excess by their integrated photometry in the framework of PEGASE single stellar population (SSP) models. The age-metallicity-extinction degeneracy was analyzed for various parameter combinations, assuming different levels of photometric accuracy. We conclude, that most of the parameter degeneracies, typical to the UBVRI photometric system, are broken in the case when the photometry data are supplemented with at least one infrared magnitude of the JHK passbands, with an accuracy better than ~0.05 mag. The presented analysis with no preassumptions on the distribution of photometric errors of star cluster models, provides estimate of the intrinsic capability of any photometric system to determine star cluster parameters from integrated photometry.
I analyze the stochastic effects introduced by the sampling of the stellar initial mass function (SIMF) in the derivation of the individual masses and the cluster mass function (CMF) from broad-band visible-NIR unresolved photometry. The classical method of using unweighted UBV photometry to simultaneously establish ages and extinctions of stellar clusters is found to be unreliable for clusters older than approx. 30 Ma, even for relatively large cluster masses. On the other hand, augmenting the filter set to include longer-wavelength filters and using weights for each filter increases the rang…
It is currently common to use spatially unresolved multi-filter broad-band photometry to determine the masses of individual stellar clusters (and hence the cluster mass function, CMF). I analyze the stochastic effects introduced by the sampling of the stellar initial mass function (SIMF) in the derivation of the individual masses and the CMF and I establish that such effects are the largest contributor to the observational uncertainties. An analytical solution, valid in the limit where uncertainties are small, is provided to establish the range of cluster masses over which the CMF slope can be…
Spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting of stellar population synthesis models is an important and popular way to constrain the physical parameters ---e.g., the ages, metallicities, masses for stellar population analysis. The previous works suggest that both blue-bands and red-bands photometry works for the SED-fitting. Either blue-domained or red-domained SED-fitting usually lead to the unreliable or biased results. Meanwhile, it seems that extending the wavelength coverage could be helpful. Since the Galaxy Evolution Explorer ({\it GALEX}) and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) pr…
Evidence that the multiple populations (MPs) are common properties of globular clusters (GCs) is accumulated over the past decades from clusters in the Milky Way and in its satellites. This finding has revived GC research, and suggested that their formation at high redshift must have been a much-more complex phenomenon than imagined before. However, most information on MPs is limited to nearby GCs. The main limitation is that most studies on MPs rely on resolved stars, facing a major challenge to investigate the MP phenomenon in distant galaxies. Here we search for integrated colors of old GCs…
We present a detailed analysis of the Galaxy structure using an unWISE wide-field image at $3.4μ$m. We perform a 3D photometric decomposition of the Milky Way taking into account i) the projection of the Galaxy on the celestial sphere and ii) that the observer is located within the Galaxy at the solar radius. We consider a large set of photometric models starting with a pure disc model and ending with a complex model which consists of thin and thick discs plus a boxy-peanut-shaped bulge. In our final model, we incorporate many observed features of the Milky Way, such as the disc flaring and wa…
The Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) survey is an on-going Hubble Space Telescope (HST) multi-cycle program to obtain high spatial resolution imaging of one-third of the M31 disk at ultraviolet through near-infrared wavelengths. In this paper, we present the first installment of the PHAT stellar cluster catalog. When completed, the PHAT cluster catalog will be among the largest and most comprehensive surveys of resolved star clusters in any galaxy. The exquisite spatial resolution achieved with HST has allowed us to identify hundreds of new clusters that were previously inaccessib…
We use our integrated SDSS photometry for 96 globular clusters in $g$ and $z$, as well as $r$ and $i$ photometry for a subset of 56 clusters, to derive the integrated colour-metallicity relation (CMR) for Galactic globular clusters. We compare this relation to previous work, including extragalactic clusters, and examine the influence of age, present-day mass function variations, structural parameters and the morphology of the horizontal branch on the relation. Moreover, we scrutinise the scatter introduced by foreground extinction (including differential reddening) and show that the scatter in…
We present the recently updated and expanded MASSCLEANcolors, a database of 70 million Monte Carlo models selected to match the properties (metallicity, ages and masses) of stellar clusters found in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This database shows the rather extreme and non-Guassian distribution of integrated colors and magnitudes expected with different cluster age and mass and the enormous age degeneracy of integrated colors when mass is unknown. This degeneracy could lead to catastrophic failures in estimating age with standard SSP models, particularly if most of the clusters are of in…
We report on the properties of 89 low mass star clusters located in the vicinity of luminous young clusters (blue globulars) in the disk of M31. 82 of the clusters are newly detected. We have determined their integrated magnitudes and colors, based on a series of Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2 exposures in blue and red (HST filters F450W and F814W). The integrated apparent magnitudes range from F450W = 17.5 to 22.5, and the colors indicate a wide range of ages. Stellar color-magnitude diagrams for all clusters were obtained and those with bright enough stars were fit to t…
This paper is the second of a series that investigates the stochasticity and degeneracy problems that hinder the derivation of the age, mass, extinction, and metallicity of unresolved star clusters in external galaxies when broad-band photometry is used. While Paper I concentrated on deriving age, mass, and extinction of star clusters for one fixed metallicity, we here derive these parameters in case when metallicity is let free to vary. The results were obtained using several different filter systems ($UBVRI$, $UBVRIJHK$, GALEX+$UBVRI$), which allowed to optimally reduce the different degener…
The binary fractions of open and globular clusters yield powerful constraints on their dynamical state and evolutionary history. We apply publicly available Bayesian analysis code to a $UBVRIJHK_{S}$ photometric catalog of the old open cluster NGC 188 to detect and characterize photometric binaries along the cluster main sequence. This technique has the advantage that it self-consistently handles photometric errors, missing data in various bandpasses, and star-by-star prior constraints on cluster membership. Simulations are used to verify uncertainties and quantify selection biases in our anal…
Photometric redshifts, which have become the cornerstone of several of the largest astronomical surveys like PanStarrs, DES, J-PAS or the LSST, require precise measurements of galaxy photometry in different bands using a consistent physical aperture. This is not trivial, due to the variation in the shape and width of the Point Spread Function (PSF) introduced by wavelength differences, instrument positions and atmospheric conditions. Current methods to correct for this effect rely on a detailed knowledge of the PSF characteristics as a function of the survey coordinates, which can be difficult…
Panchromatic spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting is a critical tool for determining the physical properties of distant galaxies, such as their stellar mass and star formation rate. One widely used method is the publicly available MAGPHYS code. We build on our previous analysis (Hayward & Smith 2015) by presenting some modifications which enable MAGPHYS to automatically estimate galaxy star formation histories (SFHs), including uncertainties, based on ultra-violet to far-infrared photometry. We use state-of-the art synthetic photometry derived by performing three-dimensional dust radiati…
It is well-known that fitting the Color Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) to the theoretical isochrones is the main method to determine star cluster ages. However, when the CMDs are not available, the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED)-fitting technique is the only other approach, although it suffers the age-metallicity-reddening degeneracy. In this work, we gather the ages, metallicities and masses of dozens of M31 star clusters from the CMD-fitting with HST images from the literatures for comparison. We check the reliability of the SED-fitting results with different models, i.e., Bruzual \& Charlot …
A recent JHKs study of several grand-design spiral galaxies shows a bimodal distribution of their system of star clusters and star forming complexes in colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams. In a comparison with stellar population models including gas, the (J-H) vs (H-Ks) diagram reveals that embedded clusters, still immersed in their parental clouds of gas and dust, generally have a redder (H-Ks) colour than older clusters, whose gas and dust have already been ejected. This bimodal behaviour is also evident in the colour-magnitude diagram MK vs (J-Ks), where the brightest clusters split…
Stellar clusters are regularly used to study the evolution of their host galaxy. Except for a few nearby galaxies, these studies rely on the interpretation of integrated cluster properties, especially integrated photometry observed using multiple filters (i.e. the Spectral Energy Distribution SED). To allow interpretation of such observations, we present a large set of GALEV cluster models using the realistic approach of adopting stochastically-sampled stellar IMFs. We provide models for a wide range of cluster masses (10^3 - 2 * 10^5$ Msun), metallicities (-2.3 <= [Fe/H] <= +0.18 dex), foregr…
We present the results of an infrared photometric survey performed with NICS@TNG in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4214. We derived accurate integrated JK magnitudes of 10 young massive clusters and compared them with the already available Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet colors. These clusters are located in the combined ultraviolet-infrared colors planes on well defined sequences, whose shapes allow a precise determination of their age. By means of the comparison with suitable stellar evolution models we estimated ages, metallicities, reddening and masses of these clusters. All the analyz…
Sophisticated spectral energy distribution (SED) models describe dust attenuation and emission using geometry parameters. This treatment is natural since dust effects are driven by the underlying star-dust geometry in galaxies. An example is the Starduster SED model, which divides a galaxy into a stellar disk, a stellar bulge, and a dust disk. This work utilises the Starduster SED model to study the efficacy of inferring geometry parameters using spatially integrated SED fitting. Our method fits the SED model to mock photometry produced by combining a semi-analytic model with the same SED mode…
We present the analysis of three faint clusters of the Small Magellanic Cloud RZ82, HW42 and RZ158. We employed the SOAR telescope instrument SAM with adaptive optics, allowing us to reach to V~23-24 mag, unprecedentedly, a depth sufficient to measure ages of up to about 10-12Gyr. All three clusters are resolved to their centres, and the resulting colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) allow us to derive ages of 3.9, 2.6, and 4.8Gyr respectively. These results are significantly younger than previous determinations (7.1, 5.0, and 8.3Gyr, respectively), based on integrated photometry or shallower CMDs…
We present the results of deep high resolution imaging performed with ACS/HRC@HST in the most active region of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4214. We resolved the stellar populations of five Young Massive Clusters and their surrounding galactic field. The star formation history of this region is characterized by two main bursts occurred within the last 500 Myr, with the oldest episode spread out across an area larger than that covered by the most recent one. The ages derived for the analysed clusters cover a wide range between 6.4<log(t/yr)<8.1 in agreement with those predicted by recent ana…
We present Monte Carlo models of open stellar clusters with the purpose of mapping out the behavior of integrated colors with mass and age. Our cluster simulation package allows for stochastic variations in the stellar mass function to evaluate variations in integrated cluster properties. We find that UBVK colors from our simulations are consistent with simple stellar population (SSP) models, provided the cluster mass is large, Mcluster >= 10^6 M_Sun. Below this mass, our simulations show two significant effects. First, the mean value of the distribution of integrated colors moves away from th…
Surface brightness fluctuations have been proved to be a very powerful technique to determine the distance and characterize the stellar content in extragalactic systems. Nevertheless, before facing the problem of stellar content in distant galaxies, we need to calibrate the method onto nearby well-known systems. In this paper we analyze the properties at $J$ and $K_s$ bands of a sample of 19 star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), for which accurate near-infrared (NIR) resolved star photometry, and integrated photometry are available. For the same sample, we derive the SBF measureme…
If all stars form in clusters and both the stars and the clusters follow a power law distribution which favours the creation of low mass objects, then the numerous low mass clusters will be deficient in high mass stars. Therefore, the mass function of stars, integrated over the whole galaxy (the Integrated Galactic Initial Mass Function, IGIMF) will be steeper at the high mass end than the underlying IMF of the stars. We show how the steepness of the IGIMF depends on the sampling method and on the assumptions made for the star cluster mass function. We also investigate the O-star content, inte…
MASSCLEAN is a new, sophisticated and robust stellar cluster image and photometry simulation package. This package is able to create color-magnitude diagrams and standard FITS images in any of the traditional optical and near-infrared bands based on cluster characteristics input by the user, including but not limited to distance, age, mass, radius and extinction. At the limit of very distant, unresolved clusters, we have checked the integrated colors created in MASSCLEAN against those from other simple stellar population (SSP) models with consistent results. Because the algorithm populates the…
It is often argued that young stellar clusters suffer a significant infant mortality that is partly related to the expulsion of dust and gas in their early phases caused by radiation pressure from hot stars and supernovae. Near-infrared (J-K)-Mk diagrams of young stellar clusters in nearby spiral galaxies show a bi-modal distribution that is consistent with a fast decline of their intrinsic extinction at an early epoch. The distinct features in the color-magnitude diagrams (CMD) and the fast change of colors for the youngest clusters allow us to place constraints on their early evolutionary ph…
We investigate the multiple stellar populations of the globular clusters M3, M5, M13, and M71 using $g^\prime$ and intermediate-band CN-$λ3883$ photometry obtained with the WIYN 0.9-m telescope on Kitt Peak. We find a strong correlation between red giant stars' CN$-g^\prime$ colors and their spectroscopic sodium abundances, thus demonstrating the efficacy of the two-filter system for stellar population studies. In all four clusters, the observed spread in red giant branch CN$-g^\prime$ colors is wider than that expected from photometric uncertainty, confirming the well-known chemical inhomogen…
We have studied a sample of 101 bright 2MASS galaxies from the Large Galaxy Atlas (LGA), whose morphologies span from early to late-types. We have generated estimates for structural parameters through a two-dimensional (2D) surface brightness photometric decomposition in the three 2MASS bands (J, H, Ks). This work represents a detailed multi-component photometric study of nearby galaxies. We report total magnitudes, effective radii, concentration indices, among other parameters, in the three 2MASS bands. We found that the integrated total magnitudes of early-type galaxies (ETGs) measured on 2M…
We present integrated photometry and color-magnitude diagrams for 161 star clusters in M33, of which 115 were previously uncataloged, using the Advanced Camera For Surveys Wide Field Channel onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The integrated V-band magnitudes of these clusters range from Mv~-9 to as faint as Mv~-4, extending the depth of the existing M33 cluster catalogs by ~1 mag. Comparisons of theoretical isochrones to the color-magnitude diagrams using the Padova models yield ages for 148 of these star clusters. The ages range from Log (t)~7.0 to Log (t)~9.0. Our color-magnitude diagrams a…
Context. When trying to derive the star cluster physical parameters of the M33 galaxy using broad-band unresolved ground-based photometry, previous studies mainly made use of simple stellar population models, shown in the recent years to be oversimplified. Aims. In this study, we aim to derive the star cluster physical parameters (age, mass, and extinction; metallicity is assumed to be LMC-like for clusters with age below 1\,Gyr and left free for older clusters) of this galaxy using models that take stochastic dispersion of cluster integrated colors into account. Methods. We use three recently…
We present a three dimensional extinction map in $r$ band. The map has a spatial angular resolution, depending on latitude, between 3 -- 9\,arcmin and covers the entire XSTPS-GAC survey area of over 6,000\,$\rm deg^2$ for Galactic longitude $\rm 140 \leq$ $l$ $ \leq 220°$ and latitude $\rm -40\leq$ $b$ $ \leq 40°$. By cross-matching the photometric catalog of the Xuyi Schmidt Telescope Photometric Survey of the Galactic Anticentre (XSTPS-GAC) with those of 2MASS and WISE, we have built a multi-band photometric stellar sample of about 30 million stars and applied spectral energy distribution (S…
This study is the third of a series that investigates the degeneracy and stochasticity problems present in the determination of physical parameters such as age, mass, extinction, and metallicity of partially resolved or unresolved star cluster populations situated in external galaxies when using broad-band photometry. This work tests the derivation of parameters of artificial star clusters using models with fixed and free metallicity for the WFC3+ACS photometric system. Then the method is applied to derive parameters of a sample of 203 star clusters in the Andromeda galaxy observed with the HS…
We present a catalog of 2,990 extended sources in a 1deg x1deg area centered on M33 using the MegaCam camera on the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii telescope (CFHT). The catalog includes 599 new candidate stellar clusters, 204 previously confirmed clusters, 1,969 likely background galaxies and 218 unknown extended objects. We present ugriz integrated magnitudes of the candidates and confirmed star clusters as well as full width at half maximum, ellipticity and stellarity. Based on the properties of the confirmed star clusters, we select a sub-sample of highly probable clusters composed of 246 object…
Mass loss remains a major uncertainty in stellar modelling. In low-mass stars, mass loss is most significant on the red giant branch (RGB), and will impact the star's evolutionary path and final stellar remnant. Directly measuring the mass difference of stars in various phases of evolution represents one of the best ways to quantify integrated mass loss. Globular clusters (GCs) are ideal objects for this. M4 is currently the only GC for which asteroseismic data exists for stars in multiple phases of evolution. Using K2 photometry, we report asteroseismic masses for 75 red giants in M4, the lar…
We investigate the integrated far-ultraviolet (FUV) emission from globular clusters. We present new FUV photometry of M~87's clusters based on archival HST WFPC2 F170W observations. We use these data to test the reliability of published photometry based on HST STIS FUV-MAMA observations, which are now known to suffer from significant red-leak. We generally confirm these previous FUV detections, but suggest they may be somewhat fainter. We compare the FUV emission from bright ($M_{V} < -9.0$) clusters in the Milky Way, M~31, M~81 and M~87 to each other and to the predictions from stellar popula…
This paper supplements Jiang et al. (2003), who studied 172 M31 globular clusters (GCs) and globular cluster candidates from Battistini et al. (1987) on the basis of integrated photometric measurements in the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) photometric system. Here, we present multicolor photometric CCD data (in the BATC system) for the remaining 39 M31 GCs and candidates. In addition, the ages of 35 GCs are constrained by comparing our accurate photometry with updated theoretical stellar synthesis models. We use photometric measurements from GALEX in the far- and near-ultraviolet an…
[abridged] Stars are thought to be formed predominantly in clusters. The clusters are formed following a cluster initial mass function (CMF) similar to the stellar initial mass function (IMF). Both the IMF and the CMF favour low-mass objects. The numerous low-mass clusters will lack high mass stars. If the integrated galactic initial mass function originates from stars formed in clusters, the IGIMF could be steeper than the IMF. We investigate how well constrained this steepening is and how it depends on the choice of sampling method and CMF. We compare analytic sampling to several implementat…
