This report describes some transport and magnetic properties of doped Bi2212 and Bi2223 superconducting whiskers. These materials have advantages over polycrystalline sample as well as large bulk crystals in that they provide narrow transitions in resistance versus temperature as well as in magnetization versus temperature curves. In addition they are easy to grow and and have short oxygen annealing times. Here Data on transport and magnetic properties of these superconducting whiskers are presented.
We have investigated the effect of atomic substitutions in the FeSe system, which exhibits the simplest crystal structure among the iron-based superconductors. An enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature Tc was observed with the substitution of S or Te for Se; the Tc increased with S substitution by up to 20 %, and also increased with Te substitution up to 75 %. In contrast, Co or Ni substitutions for the Fe site significantly suppressed superconductivity. In this work we present a detailed description of the substitution technique employed to determine Tc in the FeSe system.
We succeed in enhancement of a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) for NdO0.7F0.3BiS2 single crystal by partial substitution of Pb for Bi. The Tc increases with increasing Pb concentration until 6%. The maximum Tczero is 5.6 K, which is the highest value among BiS2 based superconductors synthesized under an ambient pressure. Pb substitution for Bi induces lattice shrinkage along the c axis. These results reflect that superconductivity in this system is responsive to the lattice strain.
We report on the effect of substitution for Cu on Tc of electron-doped infinite-layer superconductors Sr0.9La0.1Cu1-xRxO2, R = Zn and Ni. We found that Tc was nearly constant until x = 0.03 for R = Zn, while superconductivity was nearly suppressed for x = 0.02 with dTc/dx = 20 K/% for R = Ni. This behavior is very similar to that of conventional superconductors. These findings are discussed in terms of the superconducting gap symmetry in the cuprate superconductors including another electron-doped superconductor, (Nd,Ce)2CuO4-y.
We present an NMR study of the effect of S substitution in the high Tc superconductor K(x)Fe(2-y)Se(2-z)S(z) in a temperature range up to 250 K. We present NMR Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 data, and compare our results to that of the non-substituted system K(x)Fe(2-y)Se(2).
We study how Co- and Ni-substitution affect the electronic structure of the iron-based superconductor, LaFeAsO. We perform {\it ab initio} supercell calculations and unfold the first Brillouin zone (BZ) to calculate the spectral function in the BZ for the normal cell. The charge density distribution in real space shows that doped extra electrons are trapped around Co (Ni) atom. This seems to mean that Co(Ni)-substitution does not work as carrier doping. However, the present momentum-space analysis indicates that the Fermi-surface volume indeed expands by substitutions, which can be well descri…
We study theoretically the current debatable issue about the effect of transition-metal (TM) substitution in iron-based superconductors through treating all of the TM ions as randomly distributed impurities. The extra electrons from TM elements are localized at the impurity sites. In the mean time the chemical potential shifts upon substitution. The phase diagram is mapped out and it seems that the TM elements can act as effective dopants. The local density of states (LDOS) is calculated and the bottom becomes V-shaped as the impurity concentration increases. The LDOS at the Fermi energy $ρ(ω=…
By doping MgB_2 superconductor with SiC nano-particles, we have successfully introduced pinning sites directly into the crystal lattice of MgB_2 grains (intra-grain pinning). It became possible due to the combination of counter-balanced Si and C co-substitution for B, leading to a large number of intra-granular dislocations and the dispersed nano-size impurities induced by the substitution. The magnetic field dependence of the critical current density was significantly improved in a wide temperature range, whereas the transition temperature in the sample MgB_2(SiC)_x having x = 0.34, the highe…
We have synthesized AgSn1-xBixSe2 polycrystalline samples to investigate the effect of partial substitution of mixed-valence Sn by Bi3+ to the superconductivity of the valence-skip superconductor AgSnSe2. The Bi-substituted AgSn1-xBixSe2 were obtained up to x = 0.2, but an insulating phase Ag2SnBi2Se5 with a NaCl-type structure showed up above x = 0.3. The superconducting transition temperature increased from 4.5 K (x = 0) to 5.0 K (x = 0.1) by Bi substitution. The enhancement of superconductivity by the suppression of the valence-skip states of Sn suggests that the valence-skip states of Sn a…
Taking cue from the increase in the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of Fe1+xSe via nominal (2 wt%) substitution of Cr instead of excess Fe, we have now extended our study with nominal substitution (<=5 wt%) with other transition metals (Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Cr, V and Ti) in place of excess iron. The Tc is found to increase (maximum ~11 K) or get suppressed depending on the substituted transition metal. Our studies indicate that the superconducting transition temperature depends on various parameters like the ionic size of the transition metal, its magnetic moment as well as the amount o…
The influence of a partial substitution with S, Te, Co, Ni and Cu atoms on the electronic structure of the FeSe superconductor has been investigated within the density functional theory. The results of the supercell calculations reveal distinct changes of electronic structures of the substituted FeSe systems, which can be responsible for their superconducting properties. The replacement of Se atoms by Te or S ones yields imperfect nesting between the holelike and electronlike Fermi surface (FS) sheets, which enhances magnetic fluctuations responsible for superconducting pairing, thus leading t…
The effect of Zn substitution on the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, was investigated for the sintered Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-delta compounds over a wide range of hole concentration per CuO2 plane, p. Ca substitution enabled us to study the deeply overdoped region. p was changed by changing the oxygen deficiency (delta). A strongly p-dependent rate of suppression of Tc with Zn (dTc/dy) was found. From the analysis of the dTc(p)/dy and Tc(p,y) data, we found that the optimum hole content, popt, shifts to higher values with increasing Zn and superconductivity is at its strongest whe…
A large number of compounds which contain BiS$_{2}$ layers exhibit enhanced superconductivity upon electron doping. Much interest and research effort has been focused on BiS$_{2}$-based compounds which provide new opportunities for exploring the nature of superconductivity. Important to the study of BiS$_{2}$-based superconductors is the relation between structure and superconductivity. By modifying either the superconducting BiS$_2$ layers or the blocking layers in these layered compounds, one can effectively tune the lattice parameters, local atomic environment, electronic structure, and oth…
The Ba substitution by Sr has been studied in two Hg-2212 series: Hg2(Ba(1-y)Sr(y))2YCu2O8-d and Hg2(Ba(1-y)Sr(y))2(Y0.80Ca0.20)Cu2O8-d. In both series a Tc enhancement of about 40 K is observed when Sr substitutes Ba from y = 0 to y = 1.0. The y = 0 compound of the first series is the non superconducting Hg2Ba2YCu2O8-d prototype. In the second series, this y = 0 compound is already superconducting at 21 K. Indeed the members of this series present a higher charge carrier density in their CuO2 superconducting planes than their homologues of the first series due to the doping introduced by the …
We refined crystal structures of newly found members of the Fe-1111 superconductor family, CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF and SrFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) by powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis. The tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transitions were observed at ~120 K for unsubstituted CaFeAsF and at ~180 K for unsubstituted SrFeAsF, the transition temperatures agreeing with kinks observed in temperature-dependent resistivity curves. Although the transition temperature decreases, the structural phase transitions were observed below 100 K in both samples of x = 0.06, and finally th…
The effect of atomic substitution of Te in iron based superconductors FeSe (1:1 type), which exhibits the simplest crystal structure among the iron-based superconductors, has been investigated in terms of structural, electronic transport and magnetic properties. Polycrystalline samples with nominal Se:Te in FeSe1-xTex samples for x=0.5350°C, 0.5700°C, 0.6700°C and 0.75700°C were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. It has been observed that the most superconducting properties seen in x=0.6700°C samples as dc magnetic susceptibility, ac susceptibility and resistivity measurements. Tc…
LaCo2B2 with a ThCr2Si2-type structure composed of alternately stacked La and CoB layers exhibits metallic electrical conductivity and Pauli paramagnetic behavior down to 2K. Bulk superconductivity with a Tc of ~4K emerges upon substitution with dopant elements; i.e., isovalent substitution to form (La1-xYx)Co2B2, or aliovalent substitution to form La(Co1-xFex)2B2. Highly covalent bonding between Co 3d and B 2p levels in the CoB layers, which is caused by the B 2p level being shallower than the Fermi level, removes magnetic ordering from Co 3d electrons even in the undoped samples.
We have succeeded in synthesizing electron-doped polycrystalline bulk samples of T'-La1.8Eu0.2CuO4-yFy (y = 0 - 0.15) by the fluorination of undoped (Ce-free) T'-La1.8Eu0.2CuO4 using NH4F. The magnetic susceptibility measurements have revealed that the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, increases with increasing y, exhibits the maximum of 23 K at y = 0.025, and decreases. The dome-like dependence of Tc on the doped carrier concentration in the T'-type (La,Eu)-based cuprates is explained in terms of the pairing mediated by spin fluctuations based on the d-p model calculation [K. Yamaza…
We investigate the currently debated issue concerning whether transition metal substitutions dope carriers in iron based superconductors. From first-principles calculations of the configuration-averaged spectral function of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ with disordered Co/Zn substitutions of Fe, important doping effects are found beyond merely changing the carrier density. While the chemical potential shifts suggest doping of a large amount of carriers, a reduction of the coherent carrier density is found due to the loss of spectral weight. Therefore, none of the change in the Fermi surface, density of state…
We address the ferromagnetic tendencies detrimental for superconductivity that are related to the substitution of the pnictogen As atom with Ge or Si, together with additional substitutions in the spacer layers in 122 and 1111 Fe-based superconductors. Intermediate compounds in which these substitutions are realized individually are studied within density functional theory. We thus single out the control of spacer ions as an effective way to handle such a ferromagnetism, and we also show that it is suppressed in YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ under pressure ---which then can be expected to enhance its supercon…
$^{75}$As Nuclear Magnetic (NMR) and Quadrupolar (NQR) Resonance were used, together with Mössbauer spectroscopy, to investigate the magnetic state induced by Mn for Fe substitutions in F-doped LaFe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$AsO superconductors. The results show that $0.5$% of Mn doping is enough to suppress the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ from 27 K to zero and to recover the magnetic structure observed in the parent undoped LaFeAsO. Also the tetragonal to orthorhombic transition of the parent compound is recovered by introducing Mn, as evidenced by a sharp drop of the NQR frequency. The…
Local structure of SmFe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$AsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ ($x$ = 0.0, 0.05, 0.25 and 0.5) superconductors has been investigated by temperature dependent As $K$-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure. The effect of Ru substitution remains confined to the iron-arsenide layer but neither the static disorder nor the Fe-As bond strength suffers any change for $x \le$ 0.25. With further Ru substitution the static disorder increases while the Fe-As bond strength remains unchanged. Also, the Ru-As distance ($\sim$2.42 Å), different from the Fe-As distance ($\sim$2.39 Å), does not show any cha…
Effects of magnetic impurity on the superconductivity has been investigated in Mg1-xMnB2. With increase of Mn concentration x, the lattice constant c (perpendicular to the boron sheet) decreases at a rate of -1.4 % (= dlnc/dx), while a remains nearly unchanged. The transition temperature Tc steeply decreases with $x$ at a rate of dTc/dx = - 159 K. These results suggest that superconducting state of the parent MgB2 is amenable to the magnetic impurities, i.e., Mn2+.
We investigated the effects of phosphorus substitution on the shape of the Tc(x) dome in 1111-type SmFeAs1-yPyO1-xHx (0 < x < 0.5). Hydride ion substitution of oxide sites (O2- -> H-) exerts a chemical pressure effect, i.e., a structural reduction of the Pn-Fe-Pn angle α (Pn = P, As) and also dopes electrons into the FePn layer to induce superconductivity. Isovalent phosphorus substitution (P3- -> As3-) can induce only a chemical pressure effect, i.e., an increase of α for La-substitution of Sm-sites. As y increases from 0.0 to 0.5, the single Tc dome gradually splits into two domes, similar t…
We report that the ternary MgB2-xCx compounds adopt an isostructural AlB2-type hexagonal structure in a relatively small range of nominal carbon concentration, x<0.1. The lattice parameter a decreases almost linearly with increasing carbon content x, while the c parameter remains unchanged, indicating that carbon is exclusively substituted in the boron honeycomb layer without affecting the interlayer interactions. The superconducting transition temperature Tc, determined by magnetometry experiments, also decreases quasilinearly as a function of the carbon concentration. The structural and elec…
We report transport properties for layered BiCh2-based (Ch = S, Se) superconductors LaO1-xFxBiS2-ySey (x = 0.2, 0.5, y = 0-1.05) and the observation of weak antilocalization (WAL). Electrical resistivity and Hall coefficients for the Se-poor samples increase with decreasing temperature. The increase becomes less pronounced with increasing Se concentration indicating a loss of insulating behavior. Interestingly, the moderately Se-substituted samples exhibit metallic behavior in the high-temperature region and a weak increase in the resistivity in the low-temperature regions, which indicates the…
We estimate the changes in lattice parameters due to iron isotope substitution in the iron-based high temperature superconductors using a variational calculation based on the anharmonicity of the Fe-As(Se) bond. For BaFe2As2 and 57Fe to 54$Fe substitution we find a c-axis expansion of 1 10^{-3}Å and in-plane a-axis contraction of 1 10^{-5}Å at 250K in good agreement with experimental values on (Ba,K)Fe2As2 for which a negative isotope exponent α=-\frac{d\ln T_c}{d\ln m}<0 was found [P.M. Shirage et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 257003 (2009)]. For FeSe in contrast we find an expansion for both a …
The nonmagnetic impurity effect is studied on the Fe-based BaFe1.89Co0.11As2 superconductor (Tc = 25 K) with Zn substitution for Fe up to 8 at. %, which is achieved by means of high-pressure and high-temperature heating. Tc decreases almost linearly with increasing the Zn content and disappears at ~8 atomic %, being different in the shared phenomenology of the early Zn doping studies, where Tc decreases little. The Tc decreasing rate, however, remains much lower (3.63 K/%) than what is expected for the s(+-)-wave model, implying the model is unlikely. Another symmetry model such as the non-sig…
The 1111-type iron arsenide hydride CaFe1-xCoxAsH was synthesized by high-pressure solid-state reaction, and its electronic structure and superconducting properties were investigated. Bulk superconductivity was observed at x = 0.07-0.26. A maximum superconducting critical temperature Tcmax of 23 K was observed at x = 0.07. These values are in agreement with those of CaFe1-xCoxAsF. The calculated Fermi surface of CaFeAsH has a small three-dimensional 3D hole pocket around the Gamma point. This is a result of weak covalent bonding between the As 4p and H 1s orbitals. No such covalency exists in …
La-substituted CaFeAsH,(Ca1-xLax)FeAsH, were synthesized by the solid state reaction at 1173 K under high pressure of 2.5 GPa. The r-T anomaly corresponding to tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition was suppressed by La-substitution and then the superconductivity was observed at an electron doping content of Ne > 0.05. The maximum onset Tc of 47.4 K was reached for Ne = 0.18, which is significant increase compared to 23 K achieved by direct electron doping to the FeAs-layer via Co-substitution to the Fe-site. This value of Tc value fits well to the phenomenological relation between T…
Resistivity, thermoelectric power and heat capacity are investigated in the ferromagnetic superconductor RuSr2GdCu2O8 with and without Zn substitution. The thermodynamic signatures of the ordering of the Ru moments and the paramagnetic Gd moments as well as the onset of superconductivity are all clearly seen and quantified. The materials are shown to exhibit bulk superconductivity which coexists with spatially-uniform ferromagnetism. They appear to be typical underdoped superconducting cuprates in which the pseudogap dominates normal-state transport, thermodynamic and substitutional properties…
A detailed study of the effect caused by the partial substitution of Ru by Ir on the magnetic and superconducting properties of the ruthenocuprate Ru(1-x)Ir(x)Sr2GdCu2o8; 0 <= x <= 0.10; is presented. The combined experimental results of structural, electrical, and magnetic measurements indicate that Ir substitutes Ru for x <= 0.10 with no significant structural distortions. Ir-doping gradually suppresses both the magnetic and the superconducting states. However, all samples were observed to attain the zero-resistance state at temperatures >= 2 K up to the highest applied magnetic field of 18 …
To reveal the relative importance of charge doping and defect scattering in substitutionally modified 122 iron pnictides, we perform a systematic first principles study on selected bands at the Fermi level. Disorder effects are induced by various substitutions using an orbital based coherent potential approximation (CPA). Pronounced level shifts of individual bands suggest that transition metal substitutions introduce mobile charge carriers into the system. However, important deviations from such a rigid band scenario as well as spectral broadenings due to impurity scattering correlate with th…
The effect of doping MgB2 with carbon nanotubes on transition temperature, lattice parameters, critical current density and flux pinning was studied for MgB2-xCx with x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3. The carbon substitution for B was found to enhance Jc in magnetic fields but depress Tc. The depression of Tc, which is caused by the carbon substitution for B, increases with increasing doping level, sintering temperature and duration. By controlling the extent of the substitution and addition of carbon nanotubes we can achieve the optimal improvement on critical current density and flux pinning in…
We have performed structural analyses on iron-based superconductors, PrFeAsO$_{1-y}$ and PrFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, systematically, by means of Rietveld method on neutron powder diffraction data. The shifts of iron ion valence from +2, $δ$, are accurately determined from the occupancies of O and O$_{1-x}$F$_x$ sites obtained by the Rietveld analysis and F-concentration obtained by secondary ion-microprobe mass spectrometry. $T_\textrm{c}$-$δ$ curve of PrFeAsO$_{1-y}$ is different from the curve of PrFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, indicating that $δ$ is not a principal parameter for $T_\textrm{c}$ in so-called…
Structures for realizing hole-doped MgB$_2$ without appealing to chemical substitutions are proposed. These structures which consist of alternating MgB$_2$ and graphene layers have small excess energy compared to bulk graphite and MgB$_2$. Density functional theory based first-principles electronic structure calculations show significant charge transfer from the MgB$_2$ layer to graphene, resulting in effectively hole-doped MgB$_2$. Substantial enhancement in the density of states at the Fermi level of the proposed structure is predicted.
We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electron-doped high-Tc superconductors (HTSCs) Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4} (SCCO) and Eu_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4} (ECCO). Around the nodal point (pi/2, pi/2), we observed an energy gap at the Fermi level (EF) for both samples, resulting from the strong effects of antiferromagnetism. The magnitude of this gap in ECCO is larger than that in SCCO, implying that the effects of antiferromagnetism in ECCO are stronger than that in SCCO. Also, we quantitatively confirmed the effects of antiferromagnetism by the band dispersions to tight-bindi…
We present a detailed investigation of the electronic properties of CeFeAsO under chemical (As by P substitution) and hydrostatic pressure by means of in-house and synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy. The Fe magnetism is suppressed due to both pressures and no magnetic order was observed above a P-substitution level of 40% or 5.2 GPa hydrostatic pressure. We compared both pressures and found that the isovalent As by P substitution change the crystallographic and electronic properties differently than hydrostatic pressure.
We report an impurity effect in the organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ by substitution of the ET molecule with an analogue, bis(methyleneditio)tetrathiafulvalene (MT). The superconducting transition temperature decreases with increasing substitution. The in-plane magnetic penetration depth is enhanced with substitution, which is quantitatively attributed to the decrease in the in-plane mean free path. The enhancement of the penetration depth can also explain the reduction of the effective pinning in terms of the condensation energy.
We have performed Raman-scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals of the superconductors K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ ($T_c$ = 32 K), Tl$_{0.5}$K$_{0.3}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ ($T_c$ = 29 K), and Tl$_{0.5}$Rb$_{0.3}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ ($T_c$ = 31 K), as well as of the insulating compound KFe$_{1.5}$Se$_2$. To interpret our results, we have made first-principles calculations for the phonon modes in the ordered iron-vacancy structure of K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$. The modes we observe can be assigned very well from our symmetry analysis and calculations, allowing us to compare Raman-active pho…
The superconducting transition temperature, T$_{C}$, the residual resistivity $ρ_{0}$ and the slope of resistivity curve at high temperature, d$ρ$/dT, have been measured in a series of MgB$_{2}$ samples that have been chemically substituted to varying degree with Li or Cu at the Mg-site and by Li or Cu at the Mg-site along with C substitution at the B-site. DC resistivity and ac susceptibility measurements were employed to extract the above parameters. T$_{C}$ versus the electron count (estimated from simple chemical valence count arguments) shows a universal behaviour, with T$_{C}$ being cons…
We investigated the structural, electronic, and superconducting properties of Co1-xNixZr2, in which c-axis thermal expansion is systematically controlled. At x (smaller than) 0.3, c-axis negative thermal expansion (NTE) was observed, and the thermal expansion constant αc approached zero with increasing x. At x = 0.4-0.6, zero thermal expansion was observed, and positive thermal expansion (PTE) appeared for x (greater than) 0.7. By analyzing the c/a ratio, we observed a possible collapsed transition in the tetragonal lattice at around x = 0.6-0.8. The lattice collapse results in c-axis PTE and …
We present a study concerning the partial substitution of yttrium at the lanthanum site of the undoped LaFeAsO and superconducting LaFeAsO0.85F0.15 compounds. We prepared samples with a nominal yttrium content up to 70% producing simultaneous shrinkage of both the a- and c-lattice parameters by 1.8% and 1.7%, respectively. The chemical pressure provided by the partial substitution with this smaller ion size causes a lowering of the spin density wave temperature in the undoped compounds, as well as an increase of the superconducting transition temperatures in the doped ones. The 15% fluorine-do…
The superconductor MgCNi3 has been chemically doped by partial substitution of Ru for Ni in the solid solution MgCNi3-xRux for 0<x<0.5. Magnetic and specific heat measurements show that the Sommerfeld parameter (gamma_exp) and TC decrease immediately on Ru substitution, but that a TC above 2K is maintained even for a relatively large decrease in gamma_exp. Ferromagnetism is not observed to develop through Ru substitution, and the normal state magnetic susceptibility is suppressed.
We study an inhomogeneous three-orbital Hubbard model for the Cu-substituted iron pnictides using an extended real-space Green's function method combined with density functional calculations. We find that the onsite interactions of the Cu ions are the principal determinant of whether an electron dopant or a hole dopant is caused by the Cu substitution. It is found that the Cu substitution could lead to a hole doping when its onsite interactions are smaller than a critical value, as opposed to an electron doping when the interactions of Cu ions are larger than the critical value, which may expl…
The Cu substitution effect on the superconductivity of LiFeAs has been studied in comparison with Co/Ni substitution. It is found that the shrinking rate of the lattice parameter c for Cu substitution is much smaller than that of Co/Ni substitution. This is in conjugation with the observation of ARPES that shows almost the same electron and hole Fermi surfaces (FSs) size for undoped and Cu substituted LiFeAs sample except for a very small hole band sinking below Fermi level with doping, indicating little doping effect at Fermi surface by Cu substitution, in sharp contrast to the much effective…
To provide an understanding of the universal thermodynamic properties of cuprate superconductors, emerging from the empirical correlations and phase diagrams, we analyze them in terms of the scaling theory of finite temperature and quantum critical phenomena. The universal features are traced back to the existence of quantum critical lines, representing the end lines of the finite temperature transition surface. At the respective quantum critical lines two dimensional superconductor to insulator (2D-QSI) transitions and three dimensional superconductor to normal state (3D-QSN) transitions occu…
Original definition of the pseudogap [11,12] allowes to connect it conceptually with a topological insulator. It concerns the multiband superconductivity background with variable chemical potential position.
We have synthesized a quaternary fluoroarsenide SrFeAsF with the ZrCuSiAs-type structure (P4/nmm, a = 0.3999 and c = 0.8973 nm), which is composed of an alternately stacked (FeAs)- and (SrF)+ layers, analogous to the FeAs-based superconductor LaFeAsO. SrFeAsF shows metallic type conduction with the anomaly at ~180 K. The partial replacement of the Fe with Co suppresses the anomaly and induces the superconductivity, while the maximal Tc (4 K for SrFe0.875Co0.125AsF) is much lower than that of the Co-substituted LaFeAsO. Replacement of (LaO)+ layers with (SrF)+ layers results in a enlargement of…
Effects of chemical substitution of the divalent transition metals has been systematically investigated in Mg$_{1-x}M_x$B$_2$ (x=0.03; M=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Zn). Substitution of magnetic ions, i.e., Mn$^{2+}$, Fe$^{2+}$, Co$^{2+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$, for the Mg$^{2+}$ ion suppresses $T_{\rm c}$: d$T_{\rm c}$/d$x$ is the largest (= - 159 K) in the Mn-doped sample. We have found Zn-substitution increases $T_{\rm c}$ ($ΔT_{\rm c} \approx$ 0.2 K at x=0.03), perhaps due to the enhanced density of state near the Fermi level.
To provide an understanding of the universal properties emerging from the empirical correlations and phase diagrams of cuprate superconductors, we invoke the scaling theory of finite temperature and quantum critical phenomena. The universal features are traced back to the existence of quantum critical lines, representing the end lines of the finite temperature transition surface. At the respective quantum critical lines 2D superconductor to insulator (2D-QSI) transitions and 3D superconductor to normal state (3D-QSN) transitions occur. The flow to this quantum critical points is tuned by dopin…
There is an ongoing debate about the nature of the bosonic excitations responsible for the quasiparticle self energy in high temperature superconductors -- are they phonons or spin fluctuations? We present a careful analysis of the bosonic excitations as revealed by the `kink' feature at 70 meV in angle resolved photoemission data using Eliashberg theory for a d-wave superconductor. Starting from the assumption that nodal quasiparticles are not coupled to the $(π,π)$ magnetic resonance, the sharp structure at $70 $meV can be assigned to phonons. We find that not only can we account for the shi…
High-quality Bi$_{2-x}$Pb$_{x}$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) single crystals have been successfully grown by the traveling solvent floating zone technique with a wide range of Pb substitution ($x=0-0.8$). The samples are characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and measured by high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with different photon energies. A systematic evolution of the electronic structure and superstructure with Pb substitution has been revealed for the first time. The superstructure shows a significant change with Pb substitutio…
We investigated the out-of-plane transport properties of parent and chemically substituted BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ for various types of substitution. Based on the studies of Hall coefficient and chemical-substitution effect, we have clarified the origin for the unusual temperature dependence of out-of-plane resistivity $ρ_c(T)$ in the high-temperature paramagnetic-tetragonal phase. Electron (hole) carriers have an incoherent (coherent) character, which is responsible for non-metallic (metallic) $ρ_c(T)$. Although both of electron and hole contributions are almost comparable, a slightly larger contr…
Recently, new layered superconductors having a BiS2-type conduction layer have been discovered. NdO1-xFxBiS2 is a typical BiS2-based superconductor with a maximum Tc of 5.4 K. In this study, the effect of element substitution within the superconducting layer of BiS2-based NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 was investigated. We systematically synthesized two kinds of polycrystalline samples of NdO0.5F0.5Bi(S1-xSex)2 and NdO0.5F0.5Bi1-ySbyS2 by a two-step solid-state reaction method. The phase purity and the changes in lattice constants were investigated by x-ray diffraction. The superconducting properties were inv…
We examined Lead (Pb) Substitution effect on a single crystal of a layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. Pb concentration dependence of the lattice constant showed slight anomaly at about 8% and 9% substitution of Pb for Bi. These samples showed the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature and the superconducting volume fraction. Furthermore, these samples showed the anomaly in the temperature dependence of the resistivity at about 150K. These results were not observed in Pb substituted NdO0.7F0.3BiS2. Therefore, the enhancement of the superconducting properties by Pb substit…
We report effects of La substitution on superconducting state of heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5, as seen in transport and magnetization measurements. As opposed to the case of conventional superconductors, pair breaking by nonmagnetic La results in depression of Tc and indicates strong gap anisotropy. Upper critical field Hc2 values decrease with increased La concentration, but the critical field anisotropy, gamma=Hc2(a)/Hc2(c), does not change in the Ce_{1-x}La_xCoIn5 (x=0-0.15). The electronic system is in the clean limit for all values of x.
Based on the experimentally found existence of two gaps in MgB2 (one gap associated to the boron sigma-states and the other to the boron pi-states), the different contributions to the transport properties, electrical conductivity and Hall coefficient, were studied using the full potential-linearized augmented plane wave method and the generalized gradient approximation. MgB2 doping was analyzed in the rigid band approximation. This permitted the study of the partial substitution of magnesium for aluminium (Mg1-xAlxB2) as well as other substitutions such as AB2 (A=Be, Zr, Nb and Ta). The sigma-…
The effects of K and Co substitutions and quasi-hydrostatic applied pressure (P<9 GPa) in the local atomic structure of BaFe2As2, Ba(Fe{0.937}Co{0.063})2As2 and Ba{0.85}K{0.15}Fe2As2 superconductors were investigated by extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements in the As K absorption edge. The As-Fe bond length is found to be slightly reduced (<~ 0.01 Angstroms) by both Co and K substitutions, without any observable increment in the corresponding Debye Waller factor. Also, this bond is shown to be compressible (k = 3.3(3)x10^{-3} GPa^{-1}). The observed contractions of As-F…
