We evaluate the dressed Polyakov loop for hot quark matter in strong magnetic field. To compute the finite temperature effective potential, we use the Polyakov extended Nambu-Jona Lasinio model with eight-quark interactions taken into account. The bare quark mass is adjusted in order to reproduce the physical value of the vacuum pion mass. Our results show that the dressed Polyakov loop is very sensitive to the strenght of the magnetic field, and it is capable to capture both the deconfinement crossover and the chiral crossover. Besides, we compute self-consistently the phase diagram of the model. We find a tiny split of the two aforementioned crossovers as the strength of the magnetic field is increased. Concretely, for the largest value of magnetic field investigated here, $eB=19 m_π^2$, the split is of the order of $10\%$. A qualitative comparison with other effective models and recent Lattice results is also performed.
The chiral condensate and dressed Polyakov loop at finite temperature and density have been investigated in the framework of Nf = 2+1 Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with two degenerate u, d quarks and one strange quark. In the case of explicit chiral symmetry breaking with physical quark masses, it is found that the phase transitions for light u, d quarks and s quark are sequentially happened, and the separation between the transition lines for different flavors becomes wider and wider with the increase of baryon density. For each flavor, the pseudo-critical temperatures for chiral condensate …
We investigate the rapid rise of the dressed Polyakov loop in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model as a function of temperature. In QCD such a behaviour is interpreted as a confinement- deconfinement phase transition. However, we demonstrate that in the NJL model this is simply a remnant of the chiral transition.
We construct a new order parameter for finite temperature QCD by considering the quark condensate for U(1)-valued temporal boundary conditions for the fermions. Fourier transformation with respect to the boundary condition defines the dual condensate. This quantity corresponds to an equivalence class of Polyakov loops, thereby being an order parameter for the center symmetry. We explore the duality relation between the quark condensate and these dressed Polyakov loops numerically, using quenched lattice QCD configurations below and above the QCD phase transition. It is demonstrated that the Di…
We investigate the chiral condensate and the dressed Polyakov loop or dual chiral condensate at finite temperature and density in two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The dressed Polyakov loop is regarded as an equivalent order parameter of deconfinement phase transition in a confining theory. We find the behavior of dressed Polyakov loop in absence of any confinement mechanism is quite interesting, with only quark degrees of freedom present, it still shows an order parameter like behavior. It is found that in the chiral limit, the critical temperature for chiral phase transition coincides wi…
We construct a novel observable for finite temperature QCD that relates confinement and chiral symmetry. It uses phases as boundary conditions for the fermions. We discuss numerical and analytical aspects of this observable, like its spectral behavior below and above the critical temperature, as well as the connection to chiral condensate and center symmetry.
The dual observables as order parameters for center symmetry are tested at finite isospin chemical potential $μ_I$ in a Polyakov-loop enhanced chiral model of QCD with physical quark masses. As a counterpart of the dressed Polyakov-loop, the first Fourier moment of pion condensate is introduced for $μ_I>{m_π}/{2}$ under the temporal twisted boundary conditions for quarks. We demonstrate that this dual condensate exhibits the similar temperature dependence as the conventional Polyakov-loop. We confirm that its rapid increase with $T$ is driven by the evaporating of pion condensation. On the oth…
We calculated the chiral condensate and the dressed Polyakov loop in the space-time $R\times S^{3}$ and $R\times H^{3}$. The chiral condensate is the order parameter for the chiral phase transition, and the dressed Polyakov loop is the order parameter for the deconfinement phase transition. When there is a current mass, critical points for the chiral and deconfinement phase transitions are different in the crossover region. We show that the difference is changed by the gravitational effect.
We determine the quark condensate and the dressed Polyakov loop from the finite temperature Landau gauge quark propagator evaluated with U(1)-valued boundary conditions in an approximation to quenched QCD. These gauge invariant quantities allow for an investigation of the chiral and deconfinement transition. We compare results from Dyson-Schwinger equations on a lattice with infinite volume continuum results and study the temperature and quark mass dependence of both quantities. In particular we investigate the chiral condensate and the dressed Polyakov loop in the chiral limit. We also consid…
We study the thermodynamics of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with Polyakov loops, where spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and confinement are taken into account. We focus on the phase structure of the model and explore the susceptibilities associated with corresponding order parameters under the mean-field approximation.
We review theoretical aspects of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at finite temperature. The most important physical variable to characterize hot QCD is the Polyakov loop, which is an approximate order parameter for quark deconfinement in a hot gluonic medium. Additionally to its role as an order parameter, the Polyakov loop has rich physical contents in both perturbative and non-perturbative sectors. This review covers a wide range of subjects associated with the Polyakov loop from topological defects in hot QCD to model building with coupling to the Polyakov loop.
Dual meson condensates as possible order parameters for deconfinement are investigated in a Polyakov-loop enhanced linear sigma model of QCD at both zero and finite isospin chemical potential $μ_I$. We find that the rapid rise of the dual sigma condensate (corresponding to the dressed Polyakov-loop) with $T$ is driven by the chiral transition, no matter whether the Polyakov-loop dynamics is included or not. For $μ_I>m_π/2$, the dual sigma condensate shows abnormal thermal behavior which even decreases with $T$ below the melting temperature $T_c^{I_3}$ of pion superfluidity; On the other hand, …
We consider QCD near but above critical temperature Tc. The pressure, susceptibilities and the renormalized Polyakov loop -- which is an order parameter for the deconfining phase transition -- dramatically change up to temperatures a few times Tc. We refer to this region as a "semi"-QGP, where partial confinement plays important role. We show that the shear viscosity ,eta, is suppressed by two powers of the Polyakov loop. This suggests that eta/T^3 decreases markedly as QCD cools down to temperatures near Tc. We also show a ratio of the viscosity to the entropy becomes small near Tc.
We present extensive studies on hot and dense quark matter with two light and one heavy flavors in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop (so-called PNJL model). First we discuss prescription dependence in choosing the Polyakov loop effective potential and propose a simple and rather sensible ansatz. We look over quantitative comparison to the lattice measurement to confirm that the model captures thermodynamic properties correctly. We then analyze the phase structure with changing the temperature, quark chemical potential, quark masses, and coupling constants. We particularly in…
We explore the phase diagram and the modification of mesonic observables in a hot and dense medium using the (2+1) Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We present the phase diagram in the ($T,\,μ_B$)-plane, with its isentropic trajectories, paying special attention to the chiral critical end point (CEP). Chiral and deconfinement transitions are examined. The modifications of mesonic observables in the medium are explored as a tool to analyze the effective restoration of chiral symmetry for different regions of the phase diagram. It is shown that the meson masses, namely that of the kaons, change…
We compute the transport coefficients, namely, the coefficients of shear and bulk viscosities as well as thermal conductivity for hot and dense matter. The calculations are performed within the Polyakov quark meson model. The estimation of the transport coefficients is made using the Boltzmann kinetic equation within the relaxation time approximation. The energy dependent relaxation time is estimated from meson meson scattering, quark meson scattering and quark quark scattering within the model. In our calculations, the shear viscosity to entropy ratio and the coefficient of thermal conductivi…
By using the dressed Polyakov loop or dual chiral condensate as an equivalent order parameter of the deconfinement phase transition, we investigate the relation between the chiral and deconfinement phase transitions at finite temperature and density in the framework of three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. It is found that in the chiral limit, the critical temperature for chiral phase transition coincides with that of the dressed Polyakov loop in the whole $(T,μ)$ plane. In the case of explicit chiral symmetry breaking, it is found that the phase transitions are flavor dependent. For e…
We study the nucleon as a nontopological soliton in a quark medium as well as in a nucleon medium in terms of the Polyakov quark meson (PQM) model with two flavors at finite temperature and density. The constituent quark masses evolving with the temperature at various baryon chemical potentials are calculated and the equations of motion are solved according to the proper boundary conditions. The PQM model predicts an increasing size of the nucleon and a reduction of the nucleon mass in both hot environment. However, the phase structure is different from each other in quark and nucleon mediums.…
A popular observable in finite-temperature lattice QCD is the so-called singlet quark-antiquark free energy, conventionally defined in Coulomb gauge. In an effort to interpret the existing numerical data on this observable, we compute it at order O(alpha_s^2) in continuum, and analyze the result at various distance scales. At short distances (r << 1/pi T) the behaviour matches that of the gauge-independent zero-temperature potential; on the other hand at large distances (r >> 1/pi T) the singlet free energy appears to have a gauge-fixing related power-law tail. At infinite distance the result …
Apart from Magnetic Catalysis at low temperatures, recent LQCD studies have shown the opposite effect at temperatures near the transition region: instead of enhancing, the magnetic field suppresses the quark condensates (Inverse Magnetic Catalysis). In this paper, two approaches are discussed within NJL-type models with Polyakov Loop that reproduce both effects.
We have computed shear viscosity coefficient for hot and dense QCD matter within Polyakov loop extended quark meson(PQM) model for three flavors. Viscosity coefficient is estimated using Boltzmann equation within the relaxation time approximation. Relaxation times for quarks are calculated from elastic scattering of quarks and antiquarks via gluon exchange. Also the mean free paths of strange and light quarks are estimated for this cases. The calculations are performed at finite chemical potential. Thermodynamic properties like energy, pressure, entropy densities are also computed and compared…
The entanglement extended Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at zero chemical potential in the presence of an external magnetic field is studied. The effect of the entanglement parametrization is analyzed, in particular, on the pseudocritical transition temperatures and on the thermodynamical properties of the model. The model predicts that the coincidence or not of both chiral and deconfinement transition temperatures, in the presence of an external magnetic field, depends on the entanglement parametrization chosen.
We compute the Polyakov loop potential in Yang--Mills theory from the fully dressed primitively divergent correlation functions only. This is done in a variety of functional approaches ranging from functional renormalisation group equations over Dyson--Schwinger equations to two-particle irreducible functionals. We present a confinement criterion that links the infrared behaviour of propagators and vertices to the Polyakov loop expectation value. The present work extends the works of [1-3] to general functional methods and sharpens the confinement criterion presented there. The computations ar…
We study the temperature dependence of the renormalized Polyakov loop in 2+1 flavor QCD for temperatures T<210 MeV. We extend previous calculations by the HotQCD collaboration using the highly improved staggered quark action and perform a continuum extrapolation of the renormalized Polyakov loop. We compare the lattice results with the prediction of non-interacting static-light hadron resonance gas, which describes the temperature dependence of the renormalized Polyakov loop up to T<140 MeV but fails above that temperature. Furthermore, we discuss the temperature dependence of the light and st…
We calculate the Polyakov loop susceptibilities in the SU(3) lattice gauge theory using the Symanzik improved gauge action on different-sized lattices. The longitudinal and transverse fluctu- ations of the Polyakov loop, as well as, that of its absolute value are considered. We analyze their properties in relation to the confinement-deconfinement phase transition. We also present results based on simulations of (2+1)-flavor QCD on 32^3 x 8 lattice using Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action by the HotQCD collaboration. The influences of fermions on the Polyakov loop fluctuations are di…
We consider the $(2+1)$ flavor Polyakov Quark Meson Model and study the effect of including fermion vacuum fluctuations on the thermodynamics and phase diagram. The resulting model predictions are compared to the recent QCD lattice simulations by the HotQCD and Wuppertal-Budapest collaborations. The variation of the thermodynamic quantities across the phase transition region becomes smoother. This results in better agreement with the lattice data. Depending on the value of the mass of the sigma meson, including the vacuum term results in either pushing the critical end point into higher values…
We discuss the chiral phase transition of hot and dense quark matter. We illustrate that the first-order phase transition is generally favored at high baryon density and the repulsive vector-vector interaction weakens the first-order phase transition. We use the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop coupling for concreteness. We locate the QCD critical surface on the quark mass plane for various values of the vector coupling constant. We find that, with increasing quark chemical potential, the first-order region in the quark mass plane could shrink for sufficiently large vector coup…

The calculations are performed within the Polyakov loop extended quark meson model. The estimation of the transport coefficients is made using the Boltzmann kinetic equation within the relaxation time approximation. The energy dependent relaxation time is estimated from meson meson scattering, quark meson scattering and quark quark scattering within the model. Effects of an external magnetic field on the fluctuations of quark number, fluctuations and correlations of conserved charges, including baryon number, electric charge and strangeness, are studied in the 2+1 flavor Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. We find that magnetic field increases fluctuations and correlations in the regime of chiral crossover. It makes the transition of quadratic fluctuations more abrupt, and the peak structure of quartic fluctuations more pronounced. Our calculations indicate that $χ_{4}^{B}/χ_{2}^{B}$, $χ_{4}^{Q}/χ_{2}^{Q}$, and $χ_{11}^{BQ}$ are very sensitive to t…
Various thermodynamic quantities and the phase diagram of strongly interacting hot and dense magnetized quark matter are obtained with the $ 2 $-flavour Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with Polyakov loop considering finite values of the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the quarks. Susceptibilities associated with constituent quark mass and traced Polyakov loop are used to evaluate chiral and deconfinement transition temperatures. It is found that, inclusion of the AMM of the quarks in presence of the background magnetic field results in a substantial decrease in the chiral as well as deconfinement …
In the framework of an SU(3) (axial)vector meson extended linear sigma model with additional constituent quarks and Polyakov loops, we investigate the effects of (axial)vector mesons on the chiral phase transition. The parameters of the Lagrangian are set at zero temperature and we use a hybrid approach where in the effective potential the constituent quarks are treated at one-loop level and all the mesons at tree-level. We have four order parameters, two scalar condensates and two Polyakov loop variables and their temperature and baryochemical potential dependence are determined from the corr…
I review recent results obtained within chiral effective models, on the phase structure of hot quark matter in a strong magnetic background. After a brief introduction, I focus on the results obtained within two chiral models improved with the Polyakov loop. The models differ for the content of interactions, but both of them are tuned to reproduce Lattice QCD thermodynamics at zero and imaginary chemical potential. One of them takes into account an explicit Polyakov loop dependence of the coupling; the other one neglects this contribution, but takes into account multi-quark interactions. A com…
We propose a prescription to constrain the chiral effective model approach to the QCD phase diagram using the thermal Statistical Model, which is a description consistent with the experimental data at the freeze-out. In the transition region where thermal quantities of hadrons blow up, deconfined quarks and gluons should smoothly take over the degrees of freedom from hadrons in the Statistical Model. We use the Polyakov-loop coupled Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model as an effective description in the quark side. We require that the validity regions of these descriptions should have an overlap o…
The modification of mesonic observables in a hot medium is analyzed as a tool to investigate the restoration of chiral and axial symmetries in the context of the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The results of the extended model lead to the conclusion that the effects of the Polyakov loop are fundamental for reproducing lattice findings. In particular, the partial restoration of the chiral symmetry is faster in the PNJL model than in the NJL one, and it is responsible for several effects: the meson-quark coupling constants show a remarkable difference in both models, there is …
We estimate the axion properties i.e. its mass, topological susceptibility and the self-coupling within the framework of Polyakov loop enhanced Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model at finite temperature and quark chemical potential. PNJL model, where quarks couple simultaneously to the chiral condensate and to a background temporal quantum chromodynamics (QCD) gauge field, includes two important features of QCD phase transition, i.e. deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration. The Polyakov loop in PNJL model plays an important role near the critical temperature. We have shown significant differe…
We have calculated the electromagnetic spectral function (SF) vis-à-vis the dilepton rate (DR) by evaluating the one-loop photon polarisation tensor for a strongly magnetised hot and dense medium. The calculation is performed in the ambit of mean field models namely Nambu\textendash Jona-Lasinio (NJL) and its Polyakov loop extended version (PNJL) in the lowest Landau level approximation. These models allow for a dynamical generation of quark mass which, evidently, gets affected in the presence of a magnetised medium. We have shown that the strength of the SF gets boosted because of the presenc…
Using the Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model the strange quark chiral phase transition and the effect of its current mass on a hot magnetized three flavor quark matter at zero chemical potential is investigated. The impact of the 't Hooft mixing term on the restoration of the chiral symmetry on the light and strange sectors is studied and the critical temperature dependence on the magnetic field strength of the chiral strange transition is analyzed. It is shown that the s quark is much less sensitive to the magnetic field than the light quarks. Due to the 't Hooft term, it has a strong influe…
We study the chirally imbalanced hot and dense strongly interacting matter by means of the Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs). The chiral phase diagram is studied in the presence of chiral chemical potential $μ_5$. The chiral quark condensate $\langle \barψ ψ\rangle$ is obtained with the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis (CJT) effective action in concert with the Rainbow truncation. Catalysis effect of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) by $μ_5$ is observed. We examine with two popular gluon models and consistency is found within the DSE approach, as well as in comparison with lattice QCD. The CE…
We present a general approach to incorporate hadronic as well as quark degrees of freedom in a unified approach. This approach implements the correct degrees of freedom at high as well as low temperatures and densities. An effective Polyakov loop field serves as the order parameter for deconfinement. We employ a well-tested hadronic flavor-SU(3) model based on a chirally symmetric formulation that reproduces properties of ground state nuclear matter and yields good descriptions of nuclei and hypernuclei. Excluded volume effects simulating the finite size of the hadrons drive the transition to …
We investigate the influence of a deconfinement phase transition on the dynamics of hot and dense nuclear matter. We apply a hybrid model where an intermediate hydrodynamics stage is employed for the the hot and dense stage of a system created in head-on collisions of Pb+Pb/Au+Au at beam energies from $2-160A $GeV. The initial and final interactions are performed by a microscopic transport approach (UrQMD). An equation of state that incorporates a critical end point (CEP) in line with lattice data is used. It follows from coupling the Polyakov loop (as an order parameter for deconfinement) to …
We present results for the chiral and deconfinement transition of two flavor QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential. To this end we study the quark condensate and its dual, the dressed Polyakov loop, with functional methods using a set of Dyson-Schwinger equations. The quark-propagator is determined self-consistently within a truncation scheme including temperature and in-medium effects of the gluon propagator. For the chiral transition we find a crossover turning into a first order transition at a critical endpoint at large quark chemical potential, $μ_{EP}/T_{EP} \approx 3$. For th…
In this talk we extend the Polyakov-quark-meson model to N_f=2+1 quark flavors and study its bulk thermodynamics at finite temperatures in mean-field approximation. Three different Polyakov-loop potentials are considered. Our findings are confronted to recent QCD lattice simulations of the RBC-Bielefeld and HotQCD collaborations. Furthermore, the finite chemical potential expansion of the quark-number susceptibility in a Taylor series around vanishing chemical potential is analyzed. By means of a novel algorithmic differentiation technique, we have calculated Taylor coefficients up to 24th ord…
We review various theoretical approaches to the states of QCD matter out of quarks and gluons in extreme environments such as the high-temperature states at zero and finite baryon density and the dimensionally reduced state under an intense magnetic field. The topics at high temperature include the Polyakov loop and the 't Hooft loop in the perturbative regime, the Polyakov loop behaviour and the phase transition in some of non-perturbative methods; the strong-coupling expansion, the large-Nc limit and the holographic QCD models. These analyses are extended to hot and dense matter with a finit…
The Polyakov-quark-meson (PQM) model, which combines chiral as well as deconfinement aspects of strongly interacting matter is introduced for three light quark flavors. An analysis of the chiral and deconfinement phase transition of the model and its thermodynamics at finite temperatures is given. Three different forms of the effective Polyakov loop potential are considered. The findings of the (2+1)-flavor model investigations are confronted to corresponding recent QCD lattice simulations of the RBC-Bielefeld, HotQCD and Wuppertal-Budapest collaborations. The influence of the heavier quark ma…
The structure of the phase diagram for strong interactions becomes richer in the presence of a magnetic background, which enters as a new control parameter for the thermodynamics. Motivated by the relevance of this physical setting for current and future high-energy heavy ion collision experiments and for the cosmological QCD transitions, we use the linear sigma model coupled to quarks and to Polyakov loops as an effective theory to investigate how the chiral and the deconfining transitions are affected, and present a general picture for the temperature--magnetic field phase diagram. We comput…
We study D meson resonances in hot, dense quark matter within the NJL model and its Polyakov-loop extension. We show that the mass splitting between D^+ and D^- mesons is moderate, not in excess of 100 MeV. When the decay channel into quasifree quarks opens (Mott effect) at densities above twice saturation density, the decay width reaches rapidly the value of 200 MeV which entails a spectral broadening sufficient to open J/psi dissociation processes. Contrary to results from hadronic mean-field theories, the chiral quark model does not support the scenario of a dropping D meson masses so that …
We present results on QCD with four dynamical flavors in the temperature range $150$ MeV $\lesssim T \lesssim 500$ MeV. We have performed lattice simulations with Wilson fermions at maximal twist and measured Polyakov loop, chiral condensate and disconnected susceptibility, on lattices with spacings as fine as 0.065 fm. For most observables spacing effects are below statistical errors, which enables us to identify lattice results with continuum estimates. Our estimate of the pseudocritical temperature compares favorably with continuum results from staggered and domain wall fermions, confirming…
In part one of this paper, we use a non-local extension of the 3-flavor Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, which takes into account flavor-mixing, momentum dependent quark masses, and vector interactions among quarks, to investigate the possible existence of a spinodal region (determined by the vanishing of the speed of sound) in the QCD phase diagram and determine the temperature and chemical potential of the critical end point. In part two of the paper, we investigate the quark-hadron composition of baryonic matter at zero as well as non-zero temperature. This is of great topical interest fo…
We calculate two transport coefficients -- the shear viscosity over entropy ratio $η/s$ and the ratio of the electric conductivity to the temperature $σ_0/T$ -- of strongly interacting quark matter within the extended $N_f=3$ Polyakov Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model along the crossover transition line for moderate values of baryon chemical potential $0 \leq μ_B \leq 0.9$ GeV as well as in the vicinity of the critical endpoint (CEP) and at large baryon chemical potential $μ_B=1.2$ GeV, where the first-order phase transition takes place. The evaluation of the transport coefficients is performed …
This manuscript reviews recent theoretical progress on the understanding of the quark gluon plasma in a magnetic field that I presented on the conference Hot Quarks 2016, held at South Padre Island, Texas, USA, 12-17 September 2016. It is shown that, using a holographic bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton model, one can have a good quantitative agreement with Lattice data for QCD equation of state and Polyakov loop with nonzero magnetic field. I also present results for the anisotropic shear viscosity ratio $η_{\parallel}/η_{\perp}$, with the conclusion that $η_{\parallel}<η_{\perp}$ for $B>0$.
In this thesis we use various effective QCD models to investigate hot and dense nuclear matter created in heavy ion collisions. To characterize such matter, we mainly exploit correlation functions and some of the associated spectral properties. We explore the vector meson current-current correlation function with and without the influence of vector interaction in Nambu\textendash Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model and also in its Polyakov loop extended version (PNJL). As a spectral property we have computed the dilepton rate which is found to be enhanced in strongly interacting QGP (sQGP) as compared to…
The thermodynamic properties of high temperature and high density QCD-matter are explored within the Chiral SU(3)-flavor parity-doublet Polyakov-loop quark-hadron mean-field model, CMF. The quark sector of the CMF model is tuned to describe the $μ_B=0$ thermodynamics data of lattice QCD. The resulting lines of constant physical variables as well as the baryon number susceptibilities are studied in some detail in the temperature/chemical potential plane. The CMF model predicts three consecutive transitions, the nuclear first-order liquid-vapor phase transition, chiral symmetry restoration, and …
We incorporate the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of quarks in the framework of PNJL model to study hot and dense magnetised matter with chiral imbalance. For this purpose, the eigen energy solution of the Dirac equation is obtained in presence of constant background magnetic field and chiral chemical potential (CCP) along with the minimal anomalous magnetic moment interaction of the fermion. Although there is a marginal enhancement in the IMC behaviour of the quark condensate due to the combined effects of AMM and CCP, we find that the overall behaviour of the Polyakov loop and the chiral ch…
We describe a generic mechanism by which a system of Dirac fermions in thermal equilibrium acquires electric charge in an external magnetic field. To this end the fermions should have an additional quantum number, isospin or color, and should be subject to a second magnetic field, which distinguishes the isospin/color, as well as to a corresponding isospin chemical potential. The role of the latter can be also played by a nontrivial holonomy (Polyakov loop) along the Euclidean time direction. The charge is accumulated since the degeneracies of occupied lowest Landau levels for particles of pos…
While pure Yang-Mills theory feature the centre symmetry, this symmetry is explicitly broken by the presence of dynamical matter. We study the impact of the centre symmetry in such QCD-like theories. In the analytically solvable Schwinger model, centre transitions take place even under extreme conditions, temperature and/or density, and we show that they are key to the solution of the Silver-Blaze problem. We then develop an effective SU(3) quark model which confines quarks by virtue of centre sector transitions. The phase diagram by confinement is obtained as a function of the temperature and…
