We consider a reaction-diffusion equation with a half-Laplacian. In the case where the solution is independent on time, the model reduces to the Peierls-Nabarro model describing dislocations as transition layers in a phase field setting. We introduce a suitable rescaling of the evolution equation, using a small parameter $\varepsilon$. As $\varepsilon$ goes to zero, we show that the limit dynamics is characterized by a system of ODEs describing the motion of particles with two-body interactions. The interaction forces are in $1/x$ and correspond to the well-known interaction between dislocations.
We study the exterior and interior Bernoulli problems for the half Laplacian and the interior Bernoulli problem for the spectral half Laplacian. We concentrate on the existence and geometric properties of solutions. Our main results are the following. For the exterior Bernoulli problem for the half Laplacian, we show that under starshapedness assumptions on the data the free domain is starshaped. For the interior Bernoulli problem for the spectral half Laplacian, we show that under convexity assumptions on the data the free domain is convex and we prove a Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the Ber…
We consider different fractional Neumann Laplacians of order s, 0<s<1, namely, the Restricted Neumann Laplacian, the Semirestricted Neumann Laplacian and the Spectral Neumann Laplacian. In particular, we are interested in attainability of Sobolev constants for these operators in half-spaces.
We consider the nonlinear half laplacian heat equation $$ u_t+(-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}} u-|u|^{p-1}u=0,\quad \mathbb{R}^n\times (0, T). $$ We prove that all blows-up are type I, provided that $n \leq 4$ and $ 1<p<p_{*} (n)$ where $ p_{*} (n)$ is an explicit exponent which is below $\frac{n+1}{n-1}$, the critical Sobolev exponent. Central to our proof is a Giga-Kohn type monotonicity formula for half laplacian and a Liouville type theorem for self-similar nonlinear heat equation. This is the first instance of a monotonicity formula at the level of the nonlocal equation, without invoking the extension …
We consider the principal eigenvalue problem for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the upper half of a topological torus under the Dirichlet boundary condition. We present a construction of the upper half of a topological torus that admits the principal eigenfunction having exact numbers of critical points. Furthermore, we manage to identify the locations of all the critical points of the principal eigenfunction explicitly.
We present explicit formulas for solutions to nonhomogeneous boundary value problems involving any positive power of the Laplacian in the half-space. For non-integer powers the operator becomes nonlocal and this requires a suitable extension of Dirichlet-type boundary conditions. A key ingredient in our proofs is a point inversion transformation which preserves harmonicity and allows us to use known results for the ball. We include uniqueness statements, regularity estimates, and describe the growth or decay of solutions at infinity and at the boundary.
We begin the paper with a Hopf's lemma for a fractional p-Laplacian problem on a half-space. Specifically speaking, we show that the derivative of the solution along the outward normal vector is strictly positive on the boundary of the half-space. Next we show that positive solutions to a fractional p-Laplacian equation possess certain Holder continuity up to the boundary.
We establish sharp energy estimates for some solutions, such as global minimizers, monotone solutions and saddle-shaped solutions, of the fractional nonlinear equation $(-Δ)^{1/2} u=f(u)$ in $\re^n$. Our energy estimates hold for every nonlinearity $f$ and are sharp since they are optimal for one-dimensional solutions, that is, for solutions depending only on one Euclidian variable. As a consequence, in dimension $n=3$, we deduce the one-dimensional symmetry of every global minimizer and of every monotone solution. This result is the analog of a conjecture of De Giorgi on one-dimensional symme…
In this work we establish trace Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequalities with best Hardy constants, for weakly mean convex domains. We accomplish this by obtaining a new weighted Hardy type estimate which is of independent inerest. We then produce Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequalities for the spectral half Laplacian. This covers a critical case left open in \cite{FMT1}.
We study positive solutions of half-linear second-order elliptic equations of the form $$Q_{A,V}(u):= -\mathrm{div} (|\nabla u|_{A}^{p-2}A(x)\nabla u)+ V(x)|u|^{p-2}u=0 \quad \mbox{in }Ω,$$ where $1<p<\infty$, $Ω$ is a domain in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, $n\geq 2$, $V\in L_{\mathrm{loc}}^{\infty}(Ω)$, $A=\big(a_{ij}\big)\in L_{\mathrm{loc}}^{\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{R}^{n^2})$ is a symmetric and locally uniformly positive definite matrix in $Ω$, and $$|ξ|_{A}^{2}:=\left\langle A(x)ξ,ξ\right\rangle=\sum_{i,j=1}^n a_{ij}(x)ξ_iξ_j \qquad x\in Ω, ξ=(ξ_1,\ldots,ξ_n)\in\mathbb{R}^n.$$ We extend criticality theory …
This paper deals with a boundary-value problem in three-dimensional smooth bounded convex domains for the coupled chemotaxis-Stokes system with slow $p$-Laplacian diffusion \begin{equation}\nonumber \left\{ \begin{aligned} &n_t+u\cdot\nabla n=\nabla\cdot\left(|\nabla n|^{p-2}\nabla n\right)-\nabla\cdot(n\nabla c), &x\inΩ,\ t>0,\ \ &c_t+u\cdot\nabla c=Δc-nc,&x\inΩ,\ t>0,\ \ &u_t=Δu+\nabla P+n\nablaϕ,&x\inΩ,\ t>0,\ \ &\nabla\cdot u=0, &x\inΩ,\ t>0,\ \ \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation} where $ϕ\in W^{2,\infty}(Ω)$ is the gravitational potential. It is proved that global bounded weak solutions …
This paper investigates the existence of positive solutions for m-point p-Laplacian fractional boundary value problem involving Riemann Liouville fractional integral boundary conditions on the half line via the Leray-Schauder Nonlinear Alternative theorem and the use and some properties of the Green function. As an application, an example is presented to demonstrate our main result.
We establish existence and qualitative properties of saddle-shaped solutions of the elliptic fractional equation $(-Δ)^{1/2}u=f(u)$ in all the space $\re^{2m}$, where $f$ is of bistable type. These solutions are odd with respect to the Simons cone and even with respect to each coordinate. More precisely, we prove the existence of a saddle-shaped solution in every even dimension $2m$, as well as its monotonicity properties, asymptotic behaviour, and instability in dimensions $2m=4$ and $2m=6$. These results are relevant in connection with the analog for fractional equations of a conjecture of D…
We consider the nonlinear and nonlocal problem $$ A_{1/2}u=|u|^{2^\sharp-2}u\ \text{in Ω, \quad u=0 \text{on} \partialΩ$$where $A_{1/2}$ represents the square root of the Laplacian in a bounded domain with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions, $Ω$ is a bounded smooth domain in $\R^n$, $n\ge 2$ and $2^{\sharp}=2n/(n-1)$ is the critical trace-Sobolev exponent. We assume that $Ω$ is annular-shaped, i.e., there exist $R_2>R_1>0$ constants such that $\{x\in\R^n\ \text{= s.t.}\ R_1<|x|<R_2\}\subsetΩ$ and $0\notinΩ$, and invariant under a group $Γ$ of orthogonal transformations of $\R^n$ without fixed …
We study boundary value problems for the Laplacian on a domain $Ω$ consisting of the left half of the Sierpinski Gasket ($SG$), whose boundary is essentially a countable set of points $X$. For harmonic functions we give an explicit Poisson integral formula to recover the function from its boundary values, and characterize those that correspond to functions of finite energy. We give an explicit Dirichlet to Neumann map and show that it is invertible. We give an explicit description of the Dirichlet to Neumann spectra of the Laplacian with an exact count of the dimensions of eigenspaces. We comp…
We study the existence of {weak} solutions for fractional elliptic equations of the type, \begin{equation*} (-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}} u+ V(x) u= h(u), u> 0 \;\textrm{in} \;\mathbb R, \end{equation*} %where $1<q<2,\;p>2,\;1<β\leq2\;, λ>0, K(x)>0, f$ is continuous and sign changing. where $h$ is a real valued function that behaves like $e^{u^2}$ as $u\rightarrow \infty$ and $V(x)$ is a positive, continuous unbounded function. Here $(-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}}$ is the fractional Laplacian operator. We show the existence of mountain-pass solution when the nonlinearity is superlinear near $t=0$. We also study the …
The difference of the resolvents of two Laplacians on a half-space subject to Robin boundary conditions is studied. In general this difference is not compact, but it will be shown that it is compact and even belongs to some Schatten-von-Neumann class, if the coefficients in the boundary condition are sufficiently close to each other in a proper sense. In certain cases the resolvent difference is shown to belong even to the same Schatten-von Neumann class as it is known for the resolvent difference of two Robin Laplacians on a domain with a compact boundary.
In this article, the Hodge decomposition for any degree of differential forms is investigated on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$ and the half-space $\mathbb{R}^n_+$ on different scale of function spaces namely homogeneous and inhomogeneous Besov and Sobolev space, $\dot{\mathrm{H}}^{s,p}$, $\dot{\mathrm{B}}^{s}_{p,q}$, ${\mathrm{H}}^{s,p}$ and ${\mathrm{B}}^{s}_{p,q}$, for all $p\in(1,+\infty)$ , $s\in(-1+\frac{1}{p},\frac{1}{p})$. The bounded holomorphic functional calculus, and other functional analytic properties, of Hodge Laplacians is also investigated in the half-space, and yields similar…
We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian in the half-plane with constant magnetic field. Due to the translational invariance this operator admits a fiber decomposition and a family of dis- persion curves, that are real analytic functions. Each of them is simple and monotically decreasing from positive infinity to a finite value, which is the corresponding Landau level. These finite limits are thresholds in the purely absolutely continuous spectrum of the magnetic Laplacian. We prove a limiting absorption principle for this operator both outside and at the thresholds. Finally, we establish analytic …
This paper investigates an incompressible chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes system with slow $p$-Laplacian diffusion \begin{eqnarray} \left\{\begin{array}{lll} n_t+u\cdot\nabla n=\nabla\cdot(|\nabla n|^{p-2}\nabla n)-\nabla\cdot(nχ(c)\nabla c),& x\inΩ,\ t>0, c_t+u\cdot\nabla c=Δc-nf(c),& x\inΩ,\ t>0, u_t+(u\cdot\nabla) u=Δu+\nabla P+n\nablaΦ,& x\inΩ,\ t>0, \nabla\cdot u=0,& x\inΩ,\ t>0 \end{array}\right. \end{eqnarray} under homogeneous boundary conditions of Neumann type for $n$ and $c$, and of Dirichlet type for $u$ in a bounded convex domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ with smooth boundary. Here, $Φ\in …
Applying the method of moving planes in integral forms, we establish radial symmetry for positive solutions to a class of semilinear equations involving the fractional Laplacian in the unit ball and obtain Liouville type theorems concerning the non-existence of positive solutions in the half space. The regularity of solutions are also investigated.
We study stable solutions to the equation $(-Δ)^{1/2} u = f(u)$, posed in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$. For nonnegative convex nonlinearities, we prove that stable solutions are smooth in dimensions $n\leq 4$. This result, which was known only for $n=1$, follows from a new interior Hölder estimate that is completely independent of the nonlinearity $f$. A main ingredient in our proof is a new geometric form of the stability condition. It is still unknown for other fractions of the Laplacian and, surprisingly, it requires convexity of the nonlinearity. From it, we deduce higher order Sobol…
By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions which guarantee the total absence of eigenvalues of the Laplacian in the half-space, subject to variable complex Robin boundary conditions. As a further application of this technique, uniform resolvent estimates are derived under the same assumptions on the potential. Some of the results are new even in the self-adjoint setting, where we obtain quantum-mechanically natural conditions.
Our concern in this paper is to study the qualitative properties for harmonic functions related to the fractional Laplacian. Firstly we classify the polynomials in the whole space and in the half space for the fractional Laplacian defined in a principle value sense at infinity. Secondly, we study the fractional harmonic functions in half space with singularities on the boundary and the related distributional identities.
Non-uniqueness of three-dimensional Euler equations and Navier-Stokes equations forced by random noise, path-wise and more recently even in law, have been proven by various authors. We prove non-uniqueness in law of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations forced by random noise and diffused via a fractional Laplacian that has power between zero and one half. The solution we construct has H$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$lder regularity with a small exponent rather than Sobolev regularity with a small exponent. For the power sufficiently small, the non-uniqueness in law holds at the level of Leray-Hop…
In this work we derive Noether Theorems for energies of the form \begin{equation*} E(u)=\int_ΩL\left(x,u(x),(-Δ)^\frac{1}{4}u(x)\right)dx \end{equation*} for Lagrangians exhibiting invariance under a group of transformations acting either on the target or on the domain of the admissible functions $u$, in terms of fractional gradients and fractional divergences. Here $Ω$ stays either for an Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ or for the circle $\mathbb{S}^1$. We then discuss some applications of these results and related techniques to the study of nonlocal geometric equations and to the study of sta…
We investigate the fractional diffusion limit of a Linear Boltzmann equation with heavy-tailed velocity equilibrium in a half-space with Maxwell boundary conditions. We derive a new confined version of the fractional Laplacian and show uniqueness of weak solutions to the associated non-local diffusion equation.
We construct solutions of a renormalized continuum fractional parabolic Anderson model, formally given by $\partial_t u=-(-Δ)^{1/2}u+ξu$, where $ξ$ is a periodic spatial white noise. To be precise, we construct limits as $\varepsilon\to 0$ to solutions of $\partial_t u_\varepsilon=-(-Δ)^{1/2}u_\varepsilon+(ξ_\varepsilon-C_\varepsilon)u_\varepsilon$, where $ξ_\varepsilon$ is a mollification of $ξ$ at scale $\varepsilon$ and $C_\varepsilon$ is a logarithmically diverging renormalization constant. We use a simple renormalization scheme based on that of Hairer and Labbé, "A simple construction of …
We study in this note the Fisher-KPP equation where the Laplacian is replaced by the generator of a Feller semigroup with slowly decaying kernel, an important example being the fractional Laplacian. Contrary to what happens in the standard Laplacian case, where the stable state invades the unstable one at constant speed, we prove here that invasion holds at an exponential in time velocity. These results provide a mathematically rigorous justification of numerous heuristics about this model.
In a recent article by Gravejat and Smets, it is built smooth solutions to the inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation that have the form of a traveling wave. In this article we work back on their construction to provide solution to a more general class of quasi-geostrophic equation where the half-laplacian is replaced by any fractional laplacian.
In this paper, we first establish a narrow region principle and a decay at infinity theorem to extend the direct method of moving planes for general fractional $p$-Laplacian systems. By virtue of this method, we can investigate the qualitative properties of the following Schrödinger system with fractional $p$-Laplacian \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{r@{\ \ }c@{\ \ }ll} \left(-Δ\right)_{p}^{s}u+au^{p-1}& =&f(u,v), \\[0.05cm] \left(-Δ\right)_{p}^{t}v+bv^{p-1}& =&g(u,v), \end{array}\right. \end{equation*} where $0<s,\,t<1$ and $2<p<\infty$. We obtain the radial symmetry in the unit ball o…
The initial value problem for the two dimensional dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation derived from geophisical fluid dynamics is studied. The dissipation of this equation is given by the fractional Laplacian. It is known that the half Laplacian is a critical dissipation for the quasi-geostrophic equation. In this paper, far field asymptotics of solutions are given in the critical and the supercritical cases.
We show radial symmetry of positive solutions to the Hénon equation $-Δu = |x|^{-\ell} u^q $ in $\mathbb{R}^N \setminus \{ 0\} $, where $\ell \geq 0$, $q>0$ and satisfy further technical conditions. A new ingredient is a maximum principle for open subsets of a half space. It allows to apply the Moving Plane Method once a slow decay of the solution at infinity has been established, that is $\lim _{|x|\to \infty } |x|^{γ} u(x) =L $, for some numbers $γ\in (0, N-2)$ and $L >0$. Moreover, some examples of non-radial solutions are given for $q> \frac{N+1}{N-3}$ and $N\geq 4$. We also establish radi…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the evolutive discrete p-Laplacian in infinite graphs, with initial data decaying at infinity. We prove optimal sup and gradient bounds for nonnegative solutions, when the initial data has finite mass, and also sharp evaluation for the confinement of mass, i.e., the effective speed of propagation. We provide estimates for some moments of the solution, defined using the distance from a given vertex. Our technique relies on suitable inequalities of Faber-Krahn type, and looks at the local theory of continuous nonlinear partial differential equations. As it is k…
We prove that every bounded stable solution of \[ (-Δ)^{1/2} u + f(u) =0 \qquad \mbox{in }\mathbb R^3\] is a 1D profile, i.e., $u(x)= ϕ(e\cdot x)$ for some $e\in \mathbb S^2$, where $ϕ:\mathbb R\to \mathbb R$ is a nondecreasing bounded stable solution in dimension one. This proves the De Giorgi conjecture in dimension $4$ for the half-Laplacian. Equivalently, we give a positive answer to the De Giorgi conjecture for boundary reactions in $\mathbb R^{d+1}_+=\mathbb R^{d+1}\cap \{x_{d+1}\geq 0\}$ when $d = 4$, by proving that all critical points of $$ \int_{\{x_{d+1\geq 0}\}} \frac12 |\nabla U|^…
We discuss the wellposedness of the Neumann problem on a half-space for the Kohn-Laplacian in the Heisenberg group. We then construct the Neumann function and explicitly represent the solution of the associated inhomogeneous problem.
In this paper, we introduce a direct method of moving spheres for the nonlocal fractional Laplacian $(-\triangle)^{α/2}$ for $0<α<2$, in which a key ingredient is the narrow region maximum principle. As immediate applications, we classify the non-negative solutions for a semilinear equation involving the fractional Laplacian in $\mathbb{R}^n$; we prove a non-existence result for prescribing $Q_α$ curvature equation on $\mathbb{S}^n$; then by combining the direct method of moving planes and moving spheres, we establish a Liouville type theorem on the half Euclidean space. We expect to see more …
We study Neumann type boundary value problems for nonlocal equations related to Lévy processes. Since these equations are nonlocal, Neumann type problems can be obtained in many ways, depending on the kind of reflection we impose on the outside jumps. To focus on the new phenomenas and ideas, we consider different models of reflection and rather general non-symmetric Lévy measures, but only simple linear equations in half-space domains. We derive the Neumann/reflection problems through a truncation procedure on the Lévy measure, and then we develop a viscosity solution theory which includes co…
Removing al least one point from the unit sphere in $ R^{3}$ allows to factorize the angular part of the laplacian with a Cauchy-Riemann type operator. Solutions to this operator define a complex algebra of potential functions. A family of these solutions is shown to be normalizable on the sphere so it is possible to construct associate solutions for every radial solution to the time-independant Schrödinger equation with a radial potential, such that this family of solutions is square integrable in $R^{3}$. While this family of associated solutions are singular on at least one half-plane, they…
We analyze the spectral clustering procedure for identifying coarse structure in a data set $x_1, \dots, x_n$, and in particular study the geometry of graph Laplacian embeddings which form the basis for spectral clustering algorithms. More precisely, we assume that the data is sampled from a mixture model supported on a manifold $\mathcal{M}$ embedded in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and pick a connectivity length-scale $\varepsilon>0$ to construct a kernelized graph Laplacian. We introduce a notion of a well-separated mixture model which only depends on the model itself, and prove that when the model is we…
