Generalized Compositions of Natural Numbers

We consider compositions of natural numbers when there are different types of each natural number. Several recursions as well as some closed formulas for the number of compositions is derived. We also find its relationships with some known classes of integers such as Fibonacci, Catalan, Pell, Pell-Lucas, and Jacobsthal numbers.

On Number of Compositions of Natural Numbers

We first give a combinatorial interpretation of coefficients of Chebyshev polynomials, which allows us to connect them with compositions of natural numbers. Then we describe a relationship between the number of compositions of a natural number in which a certain number of parts are p-1, and other parts are not less than p with compositions in which all parts are not less than p. Then we find a relationship between principal minors of a type of Hessenberg matrices and compositions of natural numbers.

Gasper's determinant theorem, revisited

Let $n \ge 2$ be a natural number, $M$ a real $n \times n$ matrix, $s$ the sum of the entries of $M$ and $q$ the sum of their squares. With $α:= s/n$ and $β:= q/n$, Gasper's determinant bound says that $ |\det M| \le β^{n/2}$, and in case of $α^2 \ge β$: $$|\det M| \le |α| \left(\frac{nβ-α^2}{n-1}\right)^{\frac{n-1}2}$$ This article gives a corrected proof of Gasper's theorem and lists some more applications.

Generalized Compositions and Weighted Fibonacci Numbers

In this paper we consider particular generalized compositions of a natural number with a given number of parts. Its number is a weighted polynomial coefficient. The number of all generalized compositions of a natural number is a weighted $r$-generalized Fibonacci number. A relationship between these two numbers will be derived. We shall thus obtain a generalization of the well-known formula connecting Fibonacci numbers with the binomial coefficients.

Bilinear Forms on Skein Modules and Steps in Dyck Paths

We use Jones-Wenzl idempotents to construct bases for the relative Kauffman bracket skein module of a square with n points colored 1 and one point colored h. We consider a natural bilinear form on this skein module. We calculate the determinant of the matrix for this form with respect to the natural basis. We reduce the computation to count some steps in generalized Dyck paths. Moreover, we relate our determinant to a determinant on semi-meanders.

Determinants and Perfect Matchings

We give a combinatorial interpretation of the determinant of a matrix as a generating function over Brauer diagrams in two different but related ways. The sign of a permutation associated to its number of inversions in the Leibniz formula for the determinant is replaced by the number of crossings in the Brauer diagram. This interpretation naturally explains why the determinant of an even antisymmetric matrix is the square of a Pfaffian.

Edge partitions of the complete graph and a determinant like function

In this paper we prove the case $dim(V_3)=3$ of a conjecture about the exterior operad $Λ^{S^2}_{V_d}$. For this we introduce a collection of natural involutions on the set of homogeneous cycle-free $d$-partitions of the complete graph $K_{2d}$, and show that these involutions correspond to the relations in $Λ^{S^2}_{V_d}(2d+1)$. When $d=3$ this correspondence allows us to give an explicit description of a determinant-like map and to settle the above mentioned conjecture.

We study the Jacobi-Trudi-type determinant which is conjectured to be the q-character of a certain, in many cases irreducible, finite-dimensional representation of the quantum affine algebra of type D_n. Unlike the A_n and B_n cases, a simple application of the Gessel-Viennot path method does not yield a positive sum expression of the determinant over a set of tuples of paths. We study the class of weighted locally gentle quivers. This naturally extends the class of gentle quivers and gentle algebras, which have been intensively studied in the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras, to a wider class of potentially infinite-dimensional algebras. Weights on the arrows of these quivers lead to gradings on the corresponding algebras. For the natural grading by path lengths, any locally gentle algebra is a Koszul algebra.
