A dirty BCS superconductor with magnetic impurities is studied. Asymptotic solution of the thermodynamics of such superconductor with spin $1/2$ and $7/2$ magnetic impurities, is found. To this end, the system's free energy $f(H, β)$ is bounded from above and below by mean-field type bounds, which are shown to coalesce almost exactly in the thermodynamic limit, provided the impurity concentration is sufficiently small. The resulting mean-field equations for the gap $Δ$ and a parameter $ν$, characterizing the impurity subsystem, are solved and the solution minimizing $f$ is found for various values of magnetic coupling constant $g$ and impurity concentration $x$. The phase diagrams of the system are depicted with five distinct phases: the normal phase, unperturbed superconducting phase, perturbed superconducting phase with nonzero gap in the excitation spectrum, perturbed gapless superconducting phase and impurity phase with completely suppressed superconductivity. Furthermore, evidence of reentrant superconductivity and Jaccarino-Peter compensation is found. The credibility of the theory is verified by testing the dependence of the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\text{c}}$ on $x$. Very good quantitative agreement with experimental data is obtained for several alloys: (La$_{1-x}$Ce$_{x}$)Al$_{2}$, (La$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$)Al$_{2}$ and (La$_{0.8-x}$Y$_{0.20}$)Ce$_{x}$. The theory presented improves earlier developments in this field.
The magnetic and transport properties of $Pd_{0.99}Fe_{0.01}$ thin films have been studied. We have found that the Curie temperature of the films is about 20 K and the magnetic properties strongly depend on temperature below $T_{Curie}$. We have also fabricated the set of superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor josephson junctions $Nb-PdFe-Nb$. The temperature dependence of the junctions with the ferromagnet layer thickness of about 36 nm shows the reentrant behaviour that is the evidence of the transition of the junction into the $π$-state.
We studied the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) like state establishing due to the proximity effect in superconducting Nb/Cu41Ni59 bilayers. Using a special wedge-type deposition technique, series of 20-35 samples could be fabricated by magnetron sputtering during one run. The layer thickness of only a few nanometers, the composition of the alloy, and the quality of interfaces were controlled by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Auger spectroscopy. The magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic alloy layer were characterized with…
Reentrant superconductivity has been observed in the candidate spin-triplet superconductor UTe$_2$ as a function of the magnetic field applied along the hard axis. Resistivity measurements have shown, a broadened superconducting transition appears near the minimal $T_c$, highlighting the importance of superconducting fluctuations in this regime. We present a phenomenological study assuming a field-driven first-order transition between two superconducting states. We show that with quenched randomness, inhomogeneity-enhanced superconducting fluctuations near the transition could naturally accoun…
We propose a mechanism responsible for the abrupt vanishing of the dendritic flux instability found in many superconducting films when an increasing magnetic field is applied. The onset of flux avalanches and the subsequent reentrance of stability in NbN films was investigated using magneto-optical imaging, and the threshold fields were measured as functions of critical current density, $j_c$. The results are explained with excellent quantitative agreement by a thermomagnetic model published recently, Phys. Rev. B73, 014512 (2006), showing that the reentrant stability is a direct consequence o…
Ferromagnet/Superconductor/Ferromagnet (F/S/F) trilayers constitute the core of a superconducting spin valve. The switching effect of the spin valve is based on interference phenomena occurring due to the proximity effect at the S/F interfaces. A remarkable effect is only expected if the core structure exhibits strong critical temperature oscillations, or most favorable, reentrant superconductivity, when the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer is increased. The core structure has to be grown on an antiferromagnetic oxide layer (or such layer to be placed on top) to pin by exchange bias the ma…
A reentrant superconducting effect was observed in YBCO particles as a consequence of their size and microstructure. It rises from the coexistence between bulk superconductivity and surface ferromagnetism, where the enhanced magneto-electric coupling induced by broken spatial-inversion symmetry in layers near structural defects plays a very important role on surface ferromagnetism. The study assumes grain boundaries inside the particles act as additional surface regions that enhance the ferromagnetic properties. Magnetic and superconducting properties as a function of particle size were studie…
We solve a long-standing problem about a theoretical description of the upper critical magnetic field, parallel to conducting layers and perpendicular to conducting chains, in (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$ superconductor. In particular, we explain why the experimental upper critical field, $H^{b'}_{c2} \simeq 6 \ T$, is higher than both the quasi-classical upper critical field and Clogston paramagnetic limit. We show that this property is due to the coexistence of the hidden Reentrant and Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell phases in a magnetic field in a form of three plane waves with non-zero momenta of t…
We have investigated the bias-voltage dependence of the phase-dependent differential resistance of a disordered T-shaped 2-dimensional electron gas coupled to two superconducting terminals. The resistance oscillations first increase upon lowering the energy. For bias voltages below the Thouless energy, the resistance oscillations are suppressed and disappear almost completely at zero bias voltage. We find a qualitative agreement with the calculated reentrant behavior of the resistance and discuss quantitative deviations.
There is presented a phenomenological description of phase diagram of ferromagnet superconductor URhGe. In frame of the Landau phenomenological theory it was found that phase transition between anisotropic ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states under strong enough magnetic field perpendicular to direction of easy magnetization changes from the second to the first order type. It is shown that magnetic susceptibility corresponding to longitudinal magnetic fluctuations strongly increases in vicinity of the first order transition stimulating reentrance of superconducting state. The reentrant superc…
We study a bilayer consisting of an ordinary superconductor and a magnet with a spiral magnetic structure of the {\rm Ho} type. We use a self consistent solution of the Bogolioubov-de Gennes equations to evaluate the pair amplitude, the transition temperature, and the thermodynamic functions, namely, the free energy and entropy. We find that for a range of thicknesses of the magnetic layer the superconductivity is reentrant with {\it temperature} $T$: as one lowers $T$ the system turns superconducting, and when $T$ is further lowered it turns normal again. This behavior is reflected in the con…
Ferromagnet/Superconductor/Ferromagnet (F/S/F) trilayers, in which the establishing of a Fulde-Ferrell Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) like state leads to interference effects of the superconducting pairing wave function, form the core of the superconducting spin valve. The realization of strong critical temperature oscillations in such trilayers, as a function of the ferromagnetic layer thicknesses or, even more efficient, reentrant superconductivity, are the key condition to obtain a large spin valve effect, i.e. a large shift in the critical temperature. Both phenomena have been realized experime…
We report duration dependence of superconductivity in a 43 \% humidity atmosphere and $^{59}$Co nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) of polycrystalline samples of $bi$layer hydrated Na$_x$CoO$_2 \cdot y$H$_2$O. We found a reentrant behavior of superconductivity with respect to the time duration. We obtained the universal phase diagram where two superconducting phases and an in-between magnetic phase are classified by $^{59}$Co NQR frequency. Zero field $^{59}$Co nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates $1/T_1$ indicated a magnetic critical slowing down at 5 K in the magnetic phase, excluding a char…
We report evidence for a reentrant spin glass phase in electron-doped $\text{EuFe}_2\text{As}_2$ single crystals and first traces of the superconductivity re-entrance in optics. In the close-to-optimal doped $\text{Eu}(\text{Fe}_{0.91}\text{Ir}_{0.09})_2\text{As}_2$ and $\text{Eu}(\text{Fe}_{0.93}\text{Rh}_{0.07})_2\text{As}_2$ samples two magnetic transitions are observed below the superconducting critical temperature $T_c \approx 21$~K: the canted $A$-type antiferromagnetic order of the $\text{Eu}^{2+}$ ions sets in around $17\,\text{K}$; the spin glass behavior occurs another $2\,\text{K}$ …
We investigate superconducting pairing tendencies of a two-dimensional electron fluid with both valley and spin degrees of freedom, both without and in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. We present suggestive theoretical arguments that spontaneous valley polarization can lead to exotic singlet superconducting tendencies, including pair-density-wave order at zero field and re-entrant superconductivity at high field. We also find a reduced magnetic response in the polarized valley, which allows a finite violation of the Pauli limit. These results are obtained by a mean-field approach to…
It was suggested by Rasolt and Tešanović that the Landau level quantization in isotropic superconductors could enhance superconductivity in a very strong magnetic field, above the upper critical field ($H_{c2}$). We derive a generalized Harper equation for superconducting systems, and show that a similar reentrant behavior appears in a lattice model, even though the Landau--level--structure is destroyed by the periodic potential in that case. Both the orbital and the Zeeman field--induced effects are taken into account.
A model describing the Anderson impurity in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schriffer superconductor is proven to exhibit hidden integrability and is diagonalized exactly by the Bethe ansatz.
We present here the temperature dependence of heat capacity ($C$($T$)) and thermal conductivity ($κ$($T$)) in the superconducting state as well as in the normal state of as-cast V$_{1-x}$Zr$_x$ alloys. Distinct jumps in the $C$($T$) of the alloys indicate the presence of three superconducting phases with transition temperatures $T_{C1}$ = 5.4~K, $T_{C2}$ = 8.2~K and $T_{C3}$ = 8.5~K. From the metallography micrographs, these three phases are identified to be $β$-V, $γ$-ZrV$_2$, and $γ'$-ZrV$_2$ respectively. Apart from these phases, $α$-Zr and $β$-Zr phases are also detected in these samples. …
Superconducting high entropy alloy (HEA) are emerging as a new class of superconducting materials. It provides a unique opportunity to understand the complex interplay of disorder and superconductivity. We report the synthesis and detail bulk and microscopic characterization of Nb$_{60}$Re$_{10}$Zr$_{10}$Hf$_{10}$Ti$_{10}$ HEA alloy using transport, magnetization, specific heat, and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. Bulk superconductivity with transition temperature $T_{C}$ = 5.7 K confirmed by magnetization, resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. Zero-field $μ$SR measu…
Previous works on nodal d-wave superconductors have shown that a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) like modulated superconducting (SC) state can be realized with no magnetic field when quasiparticles acquire an additional linear term in the wavevector in their dispersion. In the present work, stability of such a novel modulated SC state in an artificial film against an applied magnetic field is studied. As a reflection of the presence of the two different FFLO states, one close to zero field and the other at the high field end, in a single field v.s. temperature phase diagram of thin fil…
The effects induced on the magnetization by coherent fluctuating Cooper pairs in the normal state have been measured in Pb_{1-x}In_x alloys up to high magnetic fields, of amplitudes above Hc2(0), the upper critical field extrapolated to T=0K. Our results show that in dirty alloys these superconducting fluctuation effects are, in the entire H-T phase diagram above Hc2(T), independent of the amount of impurities and that they vanish when H~1.1Hc2(0). These striking results are consistent with a phenomenological estimate that takes into account the limits imposed by the uncertainty principle to t…
The physics behind the rhombic$\to$square$\to$rhombic flux line lattice transformation in increasing fields is clarified on the basis of Eilenberger theory. We demonstrate that this reentrance observed in LuNi$_2$B$_2$C is due to intrinsic competition between superconducting gap and Fermi surface anisotropies. The calculations reproduce not only it but also predict yet not found lock-in transition to a square lattice with different orientation in higher field. In view of physical origin given, this sequence of transitions is rather generic to occur in four-fold symmetric superconductors.
Recently, high entropy alloys (HEAs) have emerged as a new platform for discovering superconducting materials and offer avenues to explore exotic superconductivity. The highly disordered nature of HEA suggests regular phonon required for BCS superconductivity may be unlikely to occur. Therefore understanding the microscopic properties of these superconducting HEA is important. We report the first detailed characterization of the superconducting properties of the noncentrosymmetric ($α$-Mn structure) HEA {(HfNb)}$_{0.10}${(MoReRu)}$_{0.90}$, and {(ZrNb)}$_{0.10}${(MoReRu)}$_{0.90}$ by using mag…

We have performed an experimental study on the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity $ρ$($T$) and heat capacity $C$($T$) of the Mo$_{1-x}$Re$_x$ $(x = 0.20, 0.25)$ alloy superconductors in different magnetic fields. In the presence of applied magnetic field, the electrical resistivity of these alloys go to zero at a temperature well above the bulk superconducting transition temperature obtained with the help of heat capacity measurements in the same magnetic field. Our study indicates the presence of surface superconducting state in these alloys, where the flux lines are pinned in t…
We have measured the transport properties of two mesoscopic hybrid loops composed of a normal-metal arm and a superconducting arm. The samples differed in the transmittance of the normal/superconducting interfaces. While the low transmittance sample showed monotonic behavior in the low temperature resistance, magnetoresistance and differential resistance, the high transmittance sample showed reentrant behavior in all three measurements. This reentrant behavior is due to coherent Andreev reflection at the normal/superconducting interfaces. We compare the reentrance effect for the three differen…
High Critical Temperature and Field Superconductivity in Nb$_{0.85}$X$_{0.15}$, (X = Ti, Zr, Hf) Alloys: Promising Candidates for Superconducting Devices
We report a comparative analysis and theoretical description of the superconducting properties of two spin-valve-valve structures containing the Heusler alloy Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Al$_{y}$ as one of two ferromagnetic (F1 or F2) layers of the F1/F2/S structure, where S stands for the superconducting Pb layer. In our experiments we used the Heusler alloy layer in two roles: as a weak ferromagnet on the place of the F2 layer and as a half-metal on the place of the F1 layer. In the first case, we obtained a large ordinary superconducting spin-valve effect $ΔT_c$ assisted by the triplet supercondu…
Niobium-zirconium (Nb-Zr) alloy is an old superconductor that is a promising new candidate for superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavity applications. Using density-functional and Eliashberg theories, we show that addition of Zr to a Nb surface in small concentrations increases the critical temperature $T_c$ and improves other superconducting properties. Furthermore, we calculate $T_c$ for Nb-Zr alloys across a broad range of Zr concentrations, showing good agreement with the literature for disordered alloys as well as the potential for significantly higher $T_c$ in ordered alloys near 75%N…
We present a theoretical study of restoration of superconductivity in the form of the triplet reentrant superconducting phase in a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) conductor. Substitution of known band and superconducting parameters of the presumably triplet Q1D superconductor Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ into our theoretical equations shows that such restoration can happen in feasibly high non-destructive pulsed magnetic field of the order of $H \simeq 100 \ T$. We investigate in detail how small inclinations of a direction of a magnetic field from its best experimental geometry decrease superconducti…
Superconducting high entropy alloys (HEAs) are new members of disordered superconductors. We report the synthesis and investigation of a new superconducting high entropy alloy Mo$_{0.11}$W$_{0.11}$V$_{0.11}$Re$_{0.34}$B$_{0.33}$ (MWVRB). It crystallized in the tetragonal CuAl$_2$ crystal structure with space group (I4/$mcm$). Comprehensive transport, magnetization and heat capacity measurements confirmed bulk type-II superconductivity having transition temperature T$_{C}$ = 4.0 K. The low temperature electronic specific heat suggests a fully gapped superconducting state in weak coupling limit.
We theoretically give an infinite number of metastable crystal structures for the superconducting sulfur hydride H$_{x}$S under pressure. It has been thought that theoretically predicted structures of H$_{2}$S and H$_{3}$S exhibit low and high $T_{\rm c}$ in the experiment, respectively. The newly found structures are long-period modulated crystals where slab-like H$_{2}$S and H$_{3}$S regions intergrow in a microscopic scale. The extremely small formation enthalpy for the H$_{2}$S--H$_{3}$S boundary indicated with the first-principles calculations suggests possible alloying of these phases th…
Since it was first observed about 40 years ago [1], the peak effect has been the subject of numerous research mainly impelled by the desire to determine its exact mechanisms. Despite these efforts, a consensus on this question has yet to be reached. Experimentally, the peak effect indicates a transition from a depinned vortex phase to a reentrant pinning phase at high magnetic field. To study the effects of intrinsic pinning on the peak effect, we consider Fe$_{x}$Ni$_{1-x}$Zr$_{2}$ superconducting metallic glasses in which the vortex pinning force varies depending on the Fe content and in whi…
The short coherence lengths characteristic of low-dimensional superconductors are associated with usefully high critical fields or temperatures. Unfortunately, such materials are often sensitive to disorder and suffer from phase fluctuations in the superconducting order parameter which diverge with temperature $T$, magnetic field $H$ or current $I$. We propose an approach to overcome synthesis and fluctuation problems: building superconductors from inhomogeneous composites of nanofilaments. Macroscopic crystals of quasi-one-dimensional Na$_{2-δ}$Mo$_6$Se$_6$ featuring Na vacancy disorder ($δ\a…
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is a powerful technique for imaging atomic structure and inferring information on local elemental composition, chemical bonding, and electronic excitations. However, traditional methods of visual inspection can be challenging for such determination in multi-component alloys, particularly beyond the dilute limit due to chemical disorder and electronic inhomogeneity. One viable solution is to use machine learning to analyze STM data and identify patterns and correlations that may not be immediately apparent through visual inspection alone. Here, we apply this …
The photoexcited state in superconducting metals and alloys was studied via pump-probe spectroscopy. A pulsed Ti:sapphire laser was used to create the non-equilibrium state and the far-infrared pulses of a synchrotron storage ring, to which the laser is synchronized, measured the changes in the material optical properties. Both the time- and frequency- dependent photoinduced spectra of Pb, Nb, NbN, Nb{0.5}Ti{0.5}N, and Pb{0.75}Bi{0.25} superconducting thin films were measured in the low-fluence regime. The time dependent data establish the regions where the relaxation rate is dominated either …
Superconducting transition temperature $T_C$ of some of the cubic $β$-phase Mo$_{1-x}$Re$_x$ alloys with x > 0.10 is an order of magnitude higher than that in the elements Mo and Re. We investigate this rather enigmatic issue of the enhanced superconductivity with the help of experimental studies of the temperature dependent electrical resistivity ($ρ$(T)) and heat capacity (C$_P$(T)), as well as the theoretical estimation of electronic density of states (DOS) using band structure calculations. The $ρ$(T) in the normal state of the Mo$_{1-x}$Re$_x$ alloys with x > 0.15 is distinctly different …
A theory has been developed to explain the anomalous behavior of the magnetic susceptibility of a normal metal-superconductor ($NS$) structure in weak magnetic fields at millikelvin temperatures. The effect was discovered experimentally by A.C. Mota et al \cite{10}. In cylindrical superconducting samples covered with a thin normal pure metal layer, the susceptibility exhibited a reentrant effect: it started to increase unexpectedly when the temperature lowered below 100 mK. The effect was observed in mesoscopic $NS$ structures when the $N$ and $S$ metals were in good electric contact. The theo…
We study superconducting properties of population-imbalanced ultracold Fermi mixtures in the honeycomb lattice that can be effectively described by the spin-imbalanced attractive Hubbard model in the presence of a Zeeman magnetic field. We use the mean-field theory approach to obtain ground state phase diagrams including some unconventional superconducting phases such as the Fulde--Ferrell--Larkin--Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. We show that this phase is characterized by atypical behaviour of the Cooper pairs total momentum in the external magnetic field. We show that the momentum changes its valu…
Magnetotransport measurements performed on several well-characterized highly oriented pyrolitic graphite and single crystalline Kish graphite samples reveal a reentrant metallic behavior in the basal-plane resistance at high magnetic fields, when only the lowest Landau levels are occupied. The results suggest that the quantum Hall effect and Landau-level-quantization-induced superconducting correlations are relevant to understand the metallic-like state(s) in graphite in the quantum limit.
Spin-flip scattering from magnetic impurities has a strong pair-breaking effect in $s$-wave superconductors where increasing the concentration of impurities rapidly destroys superconductivity. For small Kondo temperature $T_K$ the destruction of superconductivity is preceded by the reentrant superconductivity at finite temperature range $T_{c2} < T < T_{c1}$, while the normal phase reappears at $T<T_{c2} \sim T_K$. Here we explore the superconducting phase in a periodic system modeled as the Anderson lattice with additional attractive on-site (Hubbard) interaction $g$ acting on the conduction …

Hyperdoping with gallium (Ga) has been established as a route to observe superconductivity in silicon (Si). The relatively large critical temperatures (T$_{\rm c}$) and magnetic fields (B$_{\rm c}$) make this phase attractive for cryogenic circuit applications, particularly for scalable hybrid superconductor--semiconductor platforms. However, the robustness of Si:Ga superconductivity at millikelvin temperatures is yet to be evaluated. Here, we report the presence of a reentrant resistive transition below T$_{\rm c}$ for Si:Ga whose strength strongly depends on the distribution of the Ga cluste…
High-entropy alloys are a new class of alloys, and attract much attention due to their unique properties. Since the discovery of a superconducting high-entropy alloy (HEA) in 2014, the materials research on HEA superconductor is a hot topic. We have found that Hf$_{21}$Nb$_{25}$Ti$_{15}$V$_{15}$Zr$_{24}$ body-centered-cubic (BCC) HEA is a new superconductor with the superconducting critical temperature Tc of 5.3 K. We briefly discussed the comparison of cocktail effect of Tc among BCC HEA superconductors.
We have studied superconducting properties of the spin-valve thin layer heterostructures CoO$_x$/F1/Cu/F2/Cu/Pb where the ferromagnetic F1 layer was standardly made of Permalloy whereas for the F2 layer we have taken a specially prepared film of the Heusler alloy Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Al with a small degree of spin polarization of the conduction band. The heterostructures demonstrate a significant superconducting spin-valve effect, i.e. a complete switching on and off of the superconducting current flowing through the system by manipulating the mutual orientations of the magnetization of the F…
We derive integral equation for superconducting gap, which takes into account the quantum nature of electron motion in a parallel magnetic field in a quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) superconductor in the presence of a non-zero perpendicular field component. By comparison of our theoretical results with the recent experimental data obtained on the NbS$_2$, we show that the orbital effect against superconductivity partially destroys superconductivity in the so-called Ginzburg-Landau area of this Q2D conductor, as expected. Nevertheless, at relatively high magnetic fields, $H \simeq 15 \ T$, the orbi…
Here we report the observation of extraordinary superconductivity in a pressurized commercial niobium-titanium alloy. We find that its zero-resistance superconductivity persists from ambient pressure to the pressure as high as 261.7 GPa, a record high pressure up to which a known superconducting state can continuously survives. Remarkably, at such an ultra-high pressure, although the ambient pressure volume is shrunk by 45% without structural phase transition, the superconducting transition temperature (TC) increases to ~19.1 K from ~9.6 K, and the critical magnetic field (HC2) at 1.8 K has be…
This article is an overview of recent experimental and theoretical work on transport in phase-coherent hybrid nanostructures, with particular emphasis on dc electrical conduction. A summary of multiple scattering theory and the quasi-classical methods is presented and comparisons between the two are made. Several paradigms of phase-coherent transport are discussed, including zero-bias anomalies, reentrant and long range proximity effects, Andreev interferometers and superconductivity-induced conductance suppression.
