An analytic study is presented of the efficient multiphoton excitation and strong harmonic generation in three-level systems specified by a pair of nearly degenerate, strongly dipole-coupled excited states. Such systems are physically formed by the three lowest states in, e.g., the hydrogen atom or evenly charged homonuclear diatomic molecular ions under reasonably chosen laser intensities. As a detailed analytic result, we found that the laser pulse of photon energy $2{.}05\text{eV}$, duration $0{.}23\text{ps}$ and intensity $5\cdot 10^{13}\,\frac{\text{W}}{\text{cm}^2}$ is able to produce complete inversion of the initial population in the hydrogen atom through the 5-photon excitation. At the same photon energy, the pulse of duration $0{.}41\text{ps}$ and intensity $3{.}44\cdot 10^{14}\,\frac{\text{W}}{\text{cm}^2}$ was found to produce the same effect in the molecular ion but through the 9-photon excitation. We show that the accompanying scattering of light has very rich spectrum differing substantially from that of the two-level system.
We theoretically introduce a new kind of non-Gaussian state-----Laguerre polynomial excited coherent states by using the multiphoton catalysis which actually can be considered as a block comprising photon number operator. It is found that the normalized factor is related to the two-variable Hermite polynomials. We then investigate the nonclassical properties in terms of Mandel's Q parameter, quadrature squeezing, second correlation, and the negativity of Wigner function (WF). It is shown that all these properties are related to the amplitude of coherent state, catalysis number and unbalanced b…
Within the matrix product state framework, we study the non-Markovian feedback dynamics of a two-level system interacting with the electromagnetic field inside a semi-infinite waveguide where the excitation of an atom-photon bound state is possible. Taking the steady-state excitation of the emitter as a figure of merit, we compare the trapped excitation for an initially excited quantum emitter and an emitter prepared via quantized pulses containing up to four photons. In the latter case, we find that for large feedback delay times, multi-photon pulses can yield a significantly higher steady-st…
We present a unitary equivalent spin-boson Hamiltonian in which terms can be identified which contribute to the Bloch-Siegert shift, and to the level splittings at the anticrossings associated with the Bloch-Siegert resonances. First-order degenerate perturbation theory is used to develop approximate results in the case of moderate coupling for the level splitting.
In this paper we study the evolution of the two two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode quantized radiation field, namely, two-atom multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings model when the radiation field and atoms are initially prepared in the superpostion of displaced number states and excited atomic states, respectively. For this system we investigate the atomic inversion, Wigner function, phase distribution and entanglement.
We consider a spin-boson model in which a spin 1 system is coupled to an oscillator. A unitary transformation is applied which allows a separation of terms responsible for the Bloch-Siegert shift, and terms responsible for the level splittings at anticrossings associated with Bloch-Siegert resonances. When the oscillator is highly excited, the system can maintain resonance for sequential multiphoton transitions. At lower levels of excitation, resonance cannot be maintained because energy exchange with the oscillator changes the level shift. An estimate for the critical excitation level of the …
In this paper we study the interaction between two-level atom and quantized single-mode field, namely, Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM). The field and the atom are initially prepared in the binomial state and the excited atomic state, respectively. For this system we prove that the revival-collapse phenomenon exhibited in the atomic inversion of the standard JCM can be numerically (naturally) manifested in the evolution of the squeezing factor of the three-photon (standard) JCM provided that the initial photon-number distribution of the radiation has a smooth envelope.
In this paper we consider multimode multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings model, which consists of a two-level atom, initially prepared in an excited atomic state, interacting with $N$ modes of electromagnetic field prepared in general pure quantum states. For this system we show that under certain conditions the evolution of the Wigner function at the phase space origin provides direct information on the corresponding atomic inversion. This relation is also valid even if the system includes Kerr-like nonlinearity, Stark shift effect, different types of the initial atomic state as well as moving atom. F…
We demonstrate that when a waveguide beam splitter (BS) is excited by N indistinguishable photons, the arising multiphoton states evolve in a way as if they were coupled to each other with coupling strengths that are identical to the ones exhibited by a discrete fractional Fourier system. Based on the properties of the discrete fractional Fourier transform, we then derive a multiphoton suppression law for 50/50 BSs, thereby generalizing the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect. Furthermore, we examine the possibility of performing simultaneous multiphoton quantum random walks by using a single waveguide BS i…
A method to interpret probe spectra of driven degenerate atomic systems is discussed. The dressed-atom multiphoton spectroscopy (DAMS) is based on a dressing of the atomic system with the strong coupling field, followed by a perturbative treatment of the probe field interaction. As example, we apply the DAMS to provide a clear interpretation for anomalous electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA), which cannot be explained by spontaneous transfer of coherence. We show that anomalous EIA arises from quantum interference between competing two-photon transitions, and explain the different depe…
We investigate the quantum noise properties of a weakly nonlinear Duffing resonator in the deep quantum regime, where only few quanta are excited. This regime is dominated by the appearance of coherent multiphoton resonances in the nonlinear response of the resonator to the modulation. We determine simple expressions for the photon noise spectrum and find that the multiphoton resonances also induces a multiple peak structure in that noise. When the corresponding multiphoton Rabi oscillations are underdamped, zero temperature quantum fluctuations determine comparable populations of all quasiene…
In this work, we introduce a non-Gaussian quantum state named excited squeezed vacuum state (ESVS), which can be ustilized to describe quantum light field emitted from the multiphoton quantum process occurred in some restricted quantum systems. We investigate its nonclassical properties such as Wigner distribution in phase space, photon number distribution, the second-order autocorrelation and the quadrature fluctuations. By virtue of the Hilbert-Schmidt distance method, we quantify the non-Gaussianity of the ESVS. Due to the similar photon statistics, we examine the fidelity between the ESVS …
Physical properties of the ground and excited states of a $k$-local Hamiltonian are largely determined by the $k$-particle reduced density matrices ($k$-RDMs), or simply the $k$-matrix for fermionic systems---they are at least enough for the calculation of the ground state and excited state energies. Moreover, for a non-degenerate ground state of a $k$-local Hamiltonian, even the state itself is completely determined by its $k$-RDMs, and therefore contains no genuine ${>}k$-particle correlations, as they can be inferred from $k$-particle correlation functions. It is natural to ask whether a si…
A perturbative analytic operator solution of a completely quantum mechanical Hamiltonian of multi-photon pump non-degenerate hyper-Raman process is obtained. It is shown that the obtained solution is general in nature as the solutions of non-degenerate hyper-Raman and stimulated Raman processes can be obtained as special cases of the present solution. The analytic solutions obtained here are used to investigate the nonclassical properties of the different modes in the stimulated, spontaneous and partially spontaneous multi-photon pump non-degenerate hyper-Raman processes. The nonclassical natu…
The efficient simulation of quantum systems is a primary motivating factor for developing controllable quantum machines. For addressing systems with underlying bosonic structure, it is advantageous to utilize a naturally bosonic platform. Optical photons passing through linear networks may be configured to perform quantum simulation tasks, but the efficient preparation and detection of multiphoton quantum states of light in linear optical systems are challenging. Here, we experimentally implement a boson sampling protocol for simulating molecular vibronic spectra [Nature Photonics $\textbf{9}$…
Functionals that have local minima at the excited states of a non degenerate Hamiltonian are presented. Then, improved mutually orthogonal approximants of the ground and the first excited state are reported.
We study spectroscopy of artificial solid-state four-level quantum system. This system is formed by two coupled superconducting flux qubits. When multiple driving frequency of the applied microwaves matches the energy difference between any two levels, the transition to the upper level is induced. We demonstrate two types of the multi-photon transitions: direct transitions between two levels and ladder-type transitions via an intermediate level. For the latter transitions, in particular, the inverse population of the excited state with respect to the ground one is realized. These processes can…
We show that the solution of a multistate system composed of N degenerate lower (ground) states and one upper (excited) state can be reduced by using the Morris-Shore transformation to the solution of a two-state system involving only the excited state and a (bright) superposition of ground states. In addition, there are N-1 dark states composed of ground states. We use this decomposition to derive analytical solutions for degenerate extensions of the most popular exactly soluble models: the resonance solution, the Rabi, Landau-Zener, Rosen-Zener, Allen-Eberly and Demkov-Kunike models. We sugg…
The computation of small concise and comprehensible excited state wave functions is needed because many electronic processes occur in excited states. But since the excited energies are saddle points in the Hilbert space of wave functions, the standard computational methods, based on orthogonality to lower lying approximants, resort to huge and incomprehensible wave functions, otherwise, the truncated wave function is veered away from the exact. The presented variational principle for excited states, Fn, is demonstrated to lead to the correct excited eigenfunction in necessarily small truncated…
Studying the spontaneous emission of a V-type three-level atom embedded in a photonic crystal (PC) by fractional calculus, we found that the atomic excited states in the anisotropic PC can be expressed as a superposition of four dressed states analytically. Through detuning two allowed atomic transition energies with respect to the photonic band edge, the coupling between these two transitions leads to three dynamic regimes, namely non-Markovian decay, damped quantum interference and quantum interference, classified by the numbers of contributed bounded dressed states. From the degree of quant…
We analyze the possibility of tomographic reconstruction of a system of three-level atoms in both non-degenerate and degenerate cases. In the non-degenerate case (when both transitions can be accessed independently) a complete reconstruction is possible. In the degenerate case (when both transitions are excited simultaneously) the complete reconstruction is achievable only for a single atom in the Sigma configuration. For multiple Sigma atoms, or even a single atom in the Lambda configuration, only partial reconstruction is possible. Examples of one and two-atom cases are explicitly considered…
Two-photon excitation (TPE) proceeds via a "virtual" pathway, which depends on the accessibility of one or more intermediate states, and, in the case of non-centrosymmetric molecules, an additional "dipole" pathway involving the off-resonance dipole-allowed one-photon transitions and the change in the permanent dipole moment between the initial and final states. Here, we control the quantum interference between these two optical excitation pathways by using phase-shaped femtosecond laser pulses. We find enhancements by a factor of up to 1.75 in the two-photon-excited fluorescence of the photob…
We study the quantum dynamics of a Bose Josephson junction(BJJ) made up of two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. Apart from the usual ac Josephson oscillations, two different dynamical states of BJJ can be observed by tuning the inter-particle interaction strength, which are known as '$π$-oscillation' with relative phase $π$ between the condensates and 'macroscopic self-trapped' (MST) state with finite number imbalance. By choosing appropiate intial state we study above dynamical branches quantum mechanically and compare with classical dynamics. The stability region of the '$π$-oscillation' i…
The explanation presented in [Taichenachev et al, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 61}, 011802 (2000)] according to which the electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) resonances observed in degenerate two level systems are due to coherence transfer from the excited to the ground state is experimentally tested in a Hanle type experiment observing the parametric resonance on the $% D1$ line of $^{87}$Rb. While EIA occurs in the $F=1\to F^{\prime}=2 $ transition in a cell containing only $Rb$ vapor, collisions with a buffer gas ($30 torr$ of $Ne$) cause the sign reversal of this resonance as a consequence o…
Spectroscopic features revealing the coherent interaction of a degenerate two-level atomic system with two optical fields are examined. A model for the numerical calculation of the response of a degenerate two-level system to the action of an arbitrarily intense resonant pump field and a weak probe in the presence of a magnetic field is presented. The model is valid for arbitrary values of the total angular momentum of the lower and upper levels and for any choice of the polarizations of the optical waves. Closed and open degenerate two-level systems are considered. Predictions for probe absor…
Classical stationary points of an analytic Hamiltonian induce singularities of the density of quantum energy levels and their flow with a control parameter in the system's infinite-size limit. We show that for a system with $f$ degrees of freedom, a non-degenerate stationary point with index $r$ causes a discontinuity (for $r$ even) or divergence ($r$ odd) of the $(f-1)$ th derivative of both density and flow of the spectrum. An increase of flatness for a degenerate stationary point shifts the singularity to lower derivatives. The findings are verified in an $f=3$ toy model.
Laser cooling is theoretically investigated in a cascade three-level scheme, where the excited state of a laser-driven transition is coupled by a second laser to a top, more stable level, as for alkali-earth atoms. The second laser action modifies the atomic scattering cross section and produces temperatures lower than those reached by Doppler cooling on the lower transition. When multiphoton processes due to the second laser are relevant, an electromagnetic induced transparency modifies the absorption of the first laser, and the final temperature is controlled by the second laser parameters. …
We observe enhanced three-body recombination in an ultracold three-component $^6$Li Fermi gas with large but unequal scattering lengths attributable to an excited Efimov trimer state near the three-atom scattering threshold. We find excellent agreement between the measured three-body recombination rate and the recombination rate calculated in the zero-range approximation where the only free parameters are the Efimov parameters $κ_*$ and $η_*$. The value of $κ_*$ determined by the location of the Efimov resonance we observe at 895 G also predicts the locations of loss features previously observ…
With the assistance of a single cyclic three-level system, which can be realized by a superconducting flux qubit, we study theoretically the degenerate microwave parametric down-conversion (PDC) in a superconducting transmission line resonator with the fundamental and second harmonic modes involved. By adiabatically eliminating the excited states of the three-level system, we obtain an effective microwave PDC Hamiltonian for the two resonator modes in such a circuit QED system. The corresponding PDC efficiency in our model can be much larger than that in the similar circuit QED system based on…
We investigate the efficacy of boosting the nonlinear-optical response by using novel systems such as those in an excited state or with a degenerate ground state. By applying the Three Level Ansatz (TLA) and using the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn (TRK) sum rules as constraints, we find the electric polarizability and first hyperpolarizability of excited state systems to be bounded, but larger than those derived for a system in the ground state. It is shown that a system with a degenerate ground state can have divergent intrinsic polarizabilities and that such divergences are real and not relics of a pat…
Complete controllability of finite dimensional quantum systems with energy level degeneracy is investigated using two different approaches. One approach is to apply a weak constant field to eliminate the degeneracy and then control it using techniques developed for non-degenerate quantum systems. Conditions for the elimination of degeneracy are found and the issue of influence of relaxation time of constant external field to the target state are addressed through the fidelity. Another approach is to control the degenerate system by a single control field directly. It is found that the system w…
Cuprous oxide (Cu$_2$O) is a semiconductor with large exciton binding energy and significant technological importance in applications such as photovoltaics and solar water splitting. It is also a superior material system for quantum optics that enabled the observation of two intriguing phenomena, i.e. Rydberg excitons as solid-state analogue to highly-excited atomic states and dense exciton gases showing quantum degeneracy when approaching the phase transition to Bose-Einstein condensation. Previous experiments focused on natural bulk crystals due to major difficulties in growing high-quality …
We investigate the Unruh quantum Otto heat engine with level degeneracy. An effectively two level system, where the ground state is non-degenerate and the excited state is $n$-fold degenerate, is acting as the working substance, and the vacuum of massless free scalar field serves as a thermal bath via the Unruh effect. We calculate the heat and work at each step of the Unruh quantum Otto cycle and study the features of the heat engine. The efficiency of the heat engine depends only on the excited energy values of the two level system, not on its level degeneracy. However, the degeneracy acts a…
We propose a methodology to construct excited states with a fixed angular momentum, namely, "yrast excited states" of finite-size one-dimensional bosonic systems with periodic boundary conditions. The excitation energies such as the first yrast excited energy are calculated through the system-size asymptotic expansion and expressed analytically by dressed energy. Interestingly, they are grouped into sets of almost degenerate energy levels. The low-lying excitation spectrum near the yrast state is consistent with the $ U(1)$ conformal field theories if the total angular momentum is given by an …
