Let $\{ξ_n, n\in\Z^d\}$ be a $d$-dimensional array of i.i.d. Gaussian random variables and define $\SSS(A)=\sum_{n\in A} ξ_n$, where $A$ is a finite subset of $\Z^d$. We prove that the appropriately normalized maximum of $\SSS(A)/\sqrt{|A|}$, where $A$ ranges over all discrete cubes or rectangles contained in $\{1,\ldots,n\}^d$, converges in the weak sense to the Gumbel extreme-value distribution as $n\to\infty$. We also prove continuous-time counterparts of these results.
Let $\{X_i,i=1,2,...\}$ be i.i.d. standard gaussian variables. Let $S_n=X_1+...+X_n$ be the sequence of partial sums and $$ L_n=\max_{0\leq i<j\leq n}\frac{S_j-S_i}{\sqrt{j-i}}. $$ We show that the distribution of $L_n$, appropriately normalized, converges as $n\to\infty$ to the Gumbel distribution. In some sense, the the random variable $L_n$, being the maximum of $n(n+1)/2$ dependent standard gaussian variables, behaves like the maximum of $Hn \log n$ independent standard gaussian variables. Here, $H\in (0,\infty)$ is some constant. We also prove a version of the above result for the Brownia…
We prove the asymptotic normality of the standardized number of crossings of a centered stationary mixing Gaussian process when both the level and the time horizon go to infinity in such a way that the expected number of crossings also goes to infinity.
We have obtained some upper bounds for the probability distribution of extremes of a self-similar Gaussian random field with stationary rectangular increments that are defined on the compact spaces. The probability distributions of extremes for the normalized self-similar Gaussian random fields with stationary rectangular increments defined in ${\mathbb{R}}^2_+$ have been presented. In our work we have used the techniques developed for the self-similar fields and based on the classical series analysis of the maximal probability bounding from below for the Gaussian fields.
With motivation from K. Dȩbicki and P. Kisowski (2007), in this paper we derive the exact tail asymptotics of $α(t)$-locally stationary Gaussian processes with non-constant variance functions. We show that some certain variance functions lead to qualitatively new results.
This contribution derives the exact asymptotic behaviour of the supremum of alpha(t)-locally stationary Gaussian random fields over a finite hypercube. We present two applications of our result; the first one deals with extremes of ggregate multifractional Brownian motions, whereas the second application establishes the exact asymptotics of the supremum of chi-processes generated by multifractional Brownian motions.
In this paper, joint asymptotics of powered maxima for a triangular array of bivariate powered Gaussian random vectors are considered. Under the Hüsler-Reiss condition, limiting distributions of powered maxima are derived. Furthermore, the second-order expansions of the joint distributions of powered maxima are established under the refined Hüsler-Reiss condition.
Depending on a parameter $h\in (0,1]$, let $\{X_h(\mathbf{t})$, $\mathbf{t}\in\mathcal{M}_h\}$ be a class of centered Gaussian fields indexed by compact manifolds $\mathcal{M}_h$. For locally stationary Gaussian fields $X_h$, we study the asymptotic excursion probabilities of $X_h$ on $\mathcal{M}_h$. Two cases are considered: (i) $h$ is fixed and (ii) $h\rightarrow0$. These results are extended to obtain the limit behaviors of the extremes of locally stationary $χ$-fields on manifolds.
In this article we give a general criterion for some dependent Gaussian models to belong to maximal domain of attraction of Gumbel, following an application of the Stein-Chen method studied in Arratia et al(1989). We also show the convergence of the associated point process. As an application, we show the conditions are satisfied by some of the well-known supercritical Gaussian interface models, namely, membrane model, massive and massless discrete Gaussian free field, fractional Gaussian free field.
In this paper, by using the exact tail asymptotics derived by Debicki, Hashorva and Ji (Ann. Probab. 2014), we proved the Gumbel limit theorem for the maximum of a class of non-homogeneous Gaussian random fields. By using the obtained results, we also derived the Gumbel laws for Shepp statistics of fractional Brownian motion and Gaussian integrated process as well as the Gumbel law for Storage process with fractional Brownian motion as input.
We study the extreme point process associated to the off-diagonal components in the matrix representation of the Gaussian $β$-Ensemble and prove its convergence to Poisson point process as $n\to +\infty$ when the inverse temperature $β$ scales with $n$ and tends to $0$. We consider two main high temperature regimes: $\displaystyle{β\ll \frac{1}{n}}$ and $\displaystyle{nβ= 2γ\geq 0}$. The normalizing sequences are explicitly given in each cases. As a consequence, we estimate the first order asymptotic of the largest eigenvalue of the Gaussian $β$-Ensemble.
This is the first of a three paper series in which we present a comprehensive study of the extreme value theory of the scale-inhomogeneous discrete Gaussian free field. This model was introduced by Arguin and Ouimet who computed the first order of the maximum. In this first paper we establish tail estimates for the maximum value, which allow to deduce the log-correction to the order of the maximum and tightness of the centred maximum. Our proofs are based on the second moment method and Gaussian comparison techniques.
Let $\{Z(τ,s), (τ,s)\in [a,b]\times[0,T]\}$ with some positive constants $a,b,T$ be a centered Gaussian random field with variance function $σ^{2}(τ,s)$ satisfying $σ^{2}(τ,s)=σ^{2}(τ)$. We firstly derive the exact tail asymptotics for the maximum $M_{H}(T)=\max_{(τ,s)\in[a,b]\times[0,T]}Z(τ,s)/σ(τ)$ up crossing some level $u$ with any fixed $0<a<b<\infty$ and $T>0$; and we further derive the extreme limit law for $M_{H}(T)$. As applications of the main results, we derive the exact tail asymptotics and the extreme limit law for Shepp statistics with stationary Gaussian process, fractional Brow…
The seminal papers of Pickands [1,2] paved the way for a systematic study of high exceedance probabilities of both stationary and non-stationary Gaussian processes. Yet, in the vector-valued setting, due to the lack of key tools including Slepian's Lemma, Borell-TIS and Piterbarg inequalities there has not been any methodological development in the literature for the study of extremes of vector-valued Gaussian processes. In this contribution we develop the uniform double-sum method for the vector-valued setting obtaining the exact asymptotics of the exceedance probabilities for both stationary…
This paper gives a new representation of Pickands' constants, which arise in the study of extremes for a variety of Gaussian processes. Using this representation, we resolve the long-standing problem of devising a reliable algorithm for estimating these constants. A detailed error analysis illustrates the strength of our approach.
We consider in this paper the collection of near maxima of the discrete, two dimensional Gaussian free field in a box with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We provide a rough description of the geometry of the set of near maxima, estimates on the gap between the two largest maxima, and an estimate for the right tail up to a multiplicative constant on the law of the centered maximum.
Let $\boldsymbol{X}(t)=(X_1(t),\ldots,X_d(t)), t\in [0,S]$ be a Gaussian vector process and let $g(\boldsymbol{x}),\boldsymbol{x}\in\mathbb{R}^d$ be a continuous homogeneous function. In this paper we are concerned with the exact tail asymptotics of the chaos process $g(\boldsymbol{X}(t))+ h(t),t\in [0,S]$ with trend function $h$. Both scenarios $\boldsymbol{X}(t)$ is locally-stationary and $\boldsymbol{X}(t)$ is non-stationary are considered. Important examples include the product of Gaussian processes and chi-processes.
This paper considers the problem of simultaneously estimating rare-event probabilities for a class of Gaussian random fields. A conventional rare-event simulation method is usually tailored to a specific rare event and consequently would lose estimation efficiency for different events of interest, which often results in additional computational cost in such simultaneous estimation problem. To overcome this issue, we propose a uniformly efficient estimator for a general family of Hölder continuous Gaussian random fields. We establish the asymptotic and uniform efficiency of the proposed method …
We show that the rescaled maximum of the discrete Gaussian Free Field (DGFF) in dimension larger or equal to 3 is in the maximal domain of attraction of the Gumbel distribution. The result holds both for the infinite-volume field as well as the field with zero boundary conditions. We show that these results follow from an interesting application of the Stein-Chen method from Arratia et al. (1989).
Let $X(s,t), (s,t)\in E$, with $E\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ a compact set, be a centered two dimensional Gaussian random field with continuous trajectories and variance function $σ(s,t)$. Denote by $\mathcal{L}=\{(s,t): σ(s,t)=\max_{(s',t')\in E}σ(s',t')\}$. In this contribution, we derive the exact asymptotics of $\mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{(s,t)\in E}X(s,t)>u\right)$, as $u\to\infty$, under condition that $\mathcal{L}$ is a smooth curve. We illustrate our findings by an application concerned with extremes of the aggregation of two independent fractional Brownian motions.
For every $n\in\N$, let $X_{1n},..., X_{nn}$ be independent copies of a zero-mean Gaussian process $X_n=\{X_n(t), t\in T\}$. We describe all processes which can be obtained as limits, as $n\to\infty$, of the process $a_n(M_n-b_n)$, where $M_n(t)=\max_{i=1,...,n} X_{in}(t)$ and $a_n, b_n$ are normalizing constants. We also provide an analogous characterization for the limits of the process $a_nL_n$, where $L_n(t)=\min_{i=1,...,n} |X_{in}(t)|$.
We prove convergence of the full extremal process of the two-dimensional scale-inhomogeneous discrete Gaussian free field in the weak correlation regime. The scale-inhomogeneous discrete Gaussian free field is obtained from the 2d discrete Gaussian free field by modifying the variance through a function $\mathcal{I}:[0,1]\rightarrow [0,1]$. The limiting process is a cluster Cox process. The random intensity of the Cox process depends on the $\mathcal{I}^\prime(0)$ through a random measure $Y$ and on the $\mathcal{I}^\prime(1)$ through a constant $β$. We describe the cluster process, which only…
This paper considers extreme values attained by a centered, multidimensional Gaussian process $X(t)= (X_1(t),\ldots,X_n(t))$ minus drift $d(t)=(d_1(t),\ldots,d_n(t))$, on an arbitrary set $T$. Under mild regularity conditions, we establish the asymptotics of \[\log\mathbb P\left(\exists{t\in T}:\bigcap_{i=1}^n\left\{X_i(t)-d_i(t)>q_iu\right\}\right),\] for positive thresholds $q_i>0$, $i=1,\ldots,n$, and $u\to\infty$. Our findings generalize and extend previously known results for the single-dimensional and two-dimensional cases. A number of examples illustrate the theory.
In this paper we show that the componentwise maxima ofweakly dependent bivariate stationary Gaussian triangular arrays converge in distribution after normalisation to Hüsler-Reiss distribution. Under a strong dependence assumption, we prove that the limit distribution of the maxima is a mixture of a bivariate Gaussian distribution and Hüsler-Reiss distribution. Another finding of our paper is that the componentwise maxima and componentwise minima remain asymptotically independent even in the settings of Hüsler and Reiss (1989) allowing further for weak dependence. Further we derive an almost s…
We consider the discrete Gaussian Free Field in a square box in $\mathbb Z^2$ of side length $N$ with zero boundary conditions and study the joint law of its properly-centered extreme values ($h$) and their scaled spatial positions ($x$) in the limit as $N\to\infty$. Restricting attention to extreme local maxima, i.e., the extreme points that are maximal in an $r_N$-neighborhood thereof, we prove that the associated process tends, whenever $r_N\to\infty$ and $r_N/N\to0$, to a Poisson point process with intensity measure $Z(dx)e^{-αh}dh$, where $α:= 2/\sqrt{g}$ with $g:=2/π$ and where $Z(dx)$ i…
This contribution establishes exact tail asymptotics of $\sup_{(s,t)\in\mathbf{E}}$ $X(s,t)$ for a large class of nonhomogeneous Gaussian random fields $X$ on a bounded convex set $\mathbf{E}\subset\mathbb{R}^2$, with variance function that attains its maximum on a segment on $\mathbf{E}$. These findings extend the classical results for homogeneous Gaussian random fields and Gaussian random fields with unique maximum point of the variance. Applications of our result include the derivation of the exact tail asymptotics of the Shepp statistics for stationary Gaussian processes, Brownian bridge a…
Let $X(t)=(X_1(t), \dots, X_n(t)), t\in \mathcal{T}\subset \mathbb{R} $ be a centered vector-valued Gaussian process with independent components and continuous trajectories, and $h(t)=(h_1(t),\dots, h_n(t)), t\in \mathcal{T} $ be a vector-valued continuous function. We investigate the asymptotics of $$\mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{t\in \mathcal{T} } \min_{1\leq i\leq n}(X_i(t)+h_i(t))>u\right)$$ as $u\to\infty$. As an illustration to the derived results we analyze two important classes of $X(t)$: with locally-stationary structure and with varying variances of the coordinates, and calculate exact asymp…
In this paper, we consider a stochastic system described by a differential equation admitting a spatially varying random coefficient. The differential equation has been employed to model various static physics systems such as elastic deformation, water flow, electric-magnetic fields, temperature distribution, etc. A random coefficient is introduced to account for the system's uncertainty and/or imperfect measurements. This random coefficient is described by a Gaussian process (the input process) and thus the solution to the differential equation (under certain boundary conditions) is a complex…
Let $\{X(t)= (X_1(t),X_2(t))^T,\ t \in \mathbb{R}^N\}$ be an $\mathbb{R}^2$-valued continuous locally stationary Gaussian random field with $\mathbb{E}[X(t)]=\mathbf{0}$. For any compact sets $A_1, A_2 \subset \mathbb{R}^N$, precise asymptotic behavior of the excursion probability \[ \mathbb{P}\bigg(\max_{s\in A_1} X_1(s)>u,\, \max_{t\in A_2} X_2(t)>u\bigg),\ \ \text{ as }\ u \rightarrow \infty \] is investigated by applying the double sum method. The explicit results depend not only on the smoothness parameters of the coordinate fields $X_1$ and $X_2$, but also on their maximum correlation $ρ…
Let $\{X_i(t),t\ge0\}, 1\le i\le n$ be mutually independent centered Gaussian processes with almost surely continuous sample paths. We derive the exact asymptotics of $$ P\left(\exists_{t \in [0,T]} \forall_{i=1 ... n} X_i(t)> u \right) $$ as $u\to\infty$, for both locally stationary $X_i$'s and $X_i$'s with a non-constant generalized variance function. Additionally, we analyze properties of multidimensional counterparts of the Pickands and Piterbarg constants, that appear in the derived asymptotics. Important by-products of this contribution are the vector-process extensions of the Piterbarg …
We derive exact asymptotics of $$\mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{\mathbf{t}\in {\mathcal{A}}}X(\mathbf{t})>u\right),~ \text{as}~ u\to\infty,$$ for a centered Gaussian field $X(\mathbf{t}),~ \mathbf{t}\in \mathcal{A}\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, $n>1$ with continuous sample paths a.s., for which $\arg \max_{\mathbf{t}\in {\mathcal{A}}} Var(X(\mathbf{t}))$ is a Jordan set with finite and positive Lebesque measure of dimension $k\leq n$ and its dependence structure is not necessarily locally stationary. Our findings are applied to deriving the asymptotics of tail probabilities related to performance tables and chi…
Let $\boldsymbol{X}(t)=(X_1(t),\ldots,X_d(t))$ be a Gaussian vector process and $g(t)$ be a continuous function. The asymptotics of distribution of $\left\|\boldsymbol{X}(t)\right\|_p$, the $L^p$ norm for Gaussian finite-dimensional vector, have been investigated in numerous literatures. In this contribution we are concerned with the exact tail asymptotics of $\left\|\boldsymbol{X}(t)\right\|^c_p,\ c>0, $ with trend $g(t)$ over $[0,T]$. Both scenarios that $\boldsymbol{X}(t)$ is locally stationary and non-stationary are considered. Important examples include $\sum_{i=1}^d \left|X_i(t)\right|+g…
We consider the statistics of the extreme eigenvalues of sparse random matrices, a class of random matrices that includes the normalized adjacency matrices of the Erdős-Rényi graph $G(N,p)$. Tracy-Widom fluctuations of the extreme eigenvalues for $p\gg N^{-2/3}$ was proved in [17,46]. We prove that there is a crossover in the behavior of the extreme eigenvalues at $p\sim N^{-2/3}$. In the case that $N^{-7/9}\ll p\ll N^{-2/3}$, we prove that the extreme eigenvalues have asymptotically Gaussian fluctuations. Under a mean zero condition and when $p=CN^{-2/3}$, we find that the fluctuations of the…
In this paper, we consider the distribution of the supremum of non-stationary Gaussian processes, and present a new theoretical result on the asymptotic behaviour of this distribution. Unlike previously known facts in this field, our main theorem yields the asymptotic representation of the corresponding distribution function with exponentially decaying remainder term. This result can be efficiently used for studying the projection density estimates, based, for instance, on Legendre polynomials. More precisely, we construct the sequence of accompanying laws, which approximates the distribution …
For a given centered Gaussian process with stationary increments $\{X(t), t\geq 0\}$ and $c>0$, let $$ W_γ(t)=X(t)-ct-γ\inf_{0\leq s\leq t}\left(X(s)-cs\right), \quad t\geq 0$$ denote the $γ$-reflected process, where $γ\in (0,1)$. This process is introduced in the context of risk theory to model surplus process that include tax payments of loss-carry forward type.In this contribution we derive asymptotic approximations of both the ruin probability and the joint distribution of first and last passage times given that ruin occurs. We apply our findings to the cases with $X$ being the multiplex f…
This contribution investigates asymptotic properties of transient queue length process $$ Q(t)=\max\left(x+X(t)-ct, \sup_{0\leq s\leq t}\left(X(t)-X(s)-c(t-s)\right)\right),\ \ \ t\geq 0 $$ in Gaussian fluid queueing model, where input process $X$ is modeled by a centered Gaussian process with stationary increments, $c>0$ is the output rate and $x=Q(0)\ge0$. More specifically, under some mild conditions on $X$, exact asymptotics of $$\mathbb{P}\left(Q(T_u)>u\right) $$ as $u\to\infty$, is derived. The play between $u$ and $T_u$ leads to two qualitatively different regimes: (A) short-time horizo…
We continue the study of the maximum of the scale-inhomogeneous discrete Gaussian free field in dimension two. In this paper, we consider the regime of weak correlations and prove the convergence in law of the centred maximum to a randomly shifted Gumbel distribution. In particular, we obtain limiting expressions for the random shift. As in the case of variable speed branching Brownian motion, the shift is of the form CY, where C is a constant that depends only on the variance at the shortest scales, and Y is a random variable that depends only on the variance at the largest scales. Moreover, …
Let $X(t), t\in \mathcal{T}$ be a centered Gaussian random field with variance function $σ^2(\cdot)$ that attains its maximum at the unique point $t_0\in \mathcal{T}$, and let $M(\mathcal{T}):=\sup_{t\in \mathcal{T}} X(t)$. For $\mathcal{T}$ a compact subset of $\R$, the current literature explains the asymptotic tail behaviour of $M(\mathcal{T})$ under some regularity conditions including that $1- σ(t)$ has a polynomial decrease to 0 as $t \to t_0$. In this contribution we consider more general case that $1- σ(t)$ is regularly varying at $t_0$. We extend our analysis to random fields defined …
For $\{X(t), t \in G_δ\}$ a centered Gaussian process with stationary increments and a.s. sample paths on a discrete grid $G_δ=\{0,δ,2δ, ...\}$, where $δ>0$, we investigate the stationary reflected process $$Q_{δ,X}(t) = \sup\limits_{s\in [t,\infty)\cap G_δ}\big( X(s)-X(t)-c(s-t)\big), \ t \in G_δ$$ with $c>0$. We derive the exact asymptotics of $$\mathbb P\{\sup\limits_{t\in [0,T]\cap G_δ} Q_{δ,X}(t)>u\} \quad \text{and} \quad \mathbb P\{\inf\limits_{t\in [0,T]\cap G_δ} Q_{δ,X}(t)>u\},$$ as $u\to\infty$, with $T>0$. It appears that $φ=\lim_{u\to\infty} \frac{σ^2(u)}{u}$ determines the asympto…
Let $\{X(\mathbf{t}):\mathbf{t}=(t_1, t_2, \ldots, t_d)\in[0,\infty)^d\}$ be a centered stationary Gaussian field with almost surely continuous sample paths, unit variance and correlation function $r$ satisfying conditions $r(\mathbf{t})<1$ for every $\mathbf{t}\neq \mathbf{0}$ and $r(\mathbf{t})=1-\sum_{i=1}^d |t_i|^{α_i} + o(\sum_{i=1}^d |t_i|^{α_i})$, as $\mathbf{t}\to\mathbf{0}$, with constants $α_1, α_2, \ldots, α_d \in(0,2]$. The main result of this contribution is the description of the asymptotic behaviour of $P(\sup\{X(\mathbf{t}): \mathbf{t}\in\mathcal{J}^{\mathbf{x}}_{\mathbf{m}} \}…
Let $\{X(s,t):s,t\geqslant 0\}$ be a centered homogeneous Gaussian field with a.s. continuous sample paths and correlation function $r(s,t)=Cov(X(s,t),X(0,0))$ such that \[r(s,t)=1-|s|^{α_1}-|t|^{α_2}+o(|s|^{α_1}+|t|^{α_2}), \quad s,t \to 0,\] with $α_1,α_2\in(0,2],$ and $r(s,t)<1$ for $(s,t)\neq(0,0)$. In this contribution we derive an exact asymptotic expansion (as $u\to \infty$) of $$\mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{(s n_1(u),t n_2(u))\in\left[0,x\right]\times\left[0,y\right]}X(s,t)\leqslant u\right),$$ where $n_1(u)n_2(u)=u^{2/α_1+2/α_2}Ψ(u)$, which holds uniformly for $(x,y) \in [ A , B ]^2$ with $ …
We study the asymptotic edge statistics of the Gaussian $β$-ensemble, a collection of $n$ particles, as the inverse temperature $β$ tends to zero as $n$ tends to infinity. In a certain decay regime of $β$, the associated extreme point process is proved to converge in distribution to a Poisson point process as $n\to +\infty$. We also extend a well known result on Poisson limit for Gaussian extremes by showing the existence of an edge regime that we did not find in the literature.
We consider the moment space $\mathcal{M}_n$ corresponding to $p \times p$ real or complex matrix measures defined on the interval $[0,1]$. The asymptotic properties of the first $k$ components of a uniformly distributed vector $(S_{1,n}, ..., S_{n,n})^* \sim \mathcal{U} (\mathcal{M}_n)$ are studied if $n \to \infty$. In particular, it is shown that an appropriately centered and standardized version of the vector $(S_{1,n}, ..., S_{k,n})^*$ converges weakly to a vector of $k$ independent $p \times p$ Gaussian ensembles. For the proof of our results we use some new relations between ordinary mo…
We present a large deviation principle at speed N for the largest eigenvalue of some additively deformed Wigner matrices. In particular this includes Gaussian ensembles with full-rank general deformation. For the non-Gaussian ensembles, the deformation should be diagonal, and we assume that the laws of the entries have sharp sub-Gaussian Laplace transforms and satisfy certain concentration properties. For these latter ensembles we establish the large deviation principle in a restricted range $(-\infty, x_c)$, where $x_c$ depends on the deformation only and can be infinite.
In this paper, we study a random field constructed from the two-dimensional Gaussian free field (GFF) by modifying the variance along the scales in the neighborhood of each point. The construction can be seen as a local martingale transform and is akin to the time-inhomogeneous branching random walk. In the case where the variance takes finitely many values, we compute the first order of the maximum and the log-number of high points. These quantities were obtained by Bolthausen, Deuschel and Giacomin (2001) and Daviaud (2006) when the variance is constant on all scales. The proof relies on a t…
We consider the lattice version of the free field in two dimensions and study the fractal structure of the sets where the field is unusually high (or low). We then extend some of our computations to the case of the free field conditioned on being everywhere nonnegative. For example, we compute the width of the largest downward spike of a given length. Through the prism of these results, we find that the extrema of the free field under entropic repulsion (minus its mean) and those of the unconditioned free field are identical. Finally, when compared to previous results these findings reveal a s…
In a previous paper, the authors introduced an approach to prove that the statistics of the extremes of a log-correlated Gaussian field converge to a Poisson-Dirichlet variable at the level of the Gibbs measure at low temperature and under suitable test functions. The method is based on showing that the model admits a one-step replica symmetry breaking in spin glass terminology. This implies Poisson-Dirichlet statistics by general spin glass arguments. In this note, this approach is used to prove Poisson-Dirichlet statistics for the two-dimensional discrete Gaussian free field, where boundary …
In this paper, we consider a data matrix $X_N\in\mathbb{R}^{N\times p}$ where all the rows are i.i.d. samples in $\mathbb{R}^p$ of mean zero and covariance matrix $Σ\in\mathbb{R}^{p\times p}$. Here the population matrix $Σ$ is of finite rank perturbation of the identity matrix. This is the "spiked population model" first proposed by Johnstone. As $N, p\to\infty$ but $N/p \to γ\in(1, \infty)$, for the sample covariance matrix $S_N := X_NX_N^T/N$, we establish the joint distribution of the largest and the smallest few packs of eigenvalues. Inside each pack, they will behave the same as the eigen…
Extreme events and the heavy tail distributions driven by them are ubiquitous in various scientific, engineering and financial research. They are typically associated with stochastic instability caused by hidden unresolved processes. Previous studies have shown that such instability can be modeled by a stochastic damping in conditional Gaussian models. However, these results are mostly obtained through numerical experiments, while a rigorous understanding of the underlying mechanism is sorely lacking. This paper contributes to this issue by establishing a theoretical framework, in which the ta…
We quantify the large deviations of Gaussian extreme value statistics on closed convex sets in d-dimensional Euclidean space. The asymptotics imply that the extreme value distribution exhibits a rate function that is a simple quadratic function of a unique "dominating point" located on the boundary of the convex set. Furthermore, the dominating point is identified as the optimizer of a certain convex quadratic programming problem, indicating a "collusion" between the dependence structure of the Gaussian random vectors and the geometry of the convex set in determining the asymptotics. We specia…
In this paper we show that the conditional distribution of perturbed chi-quare risks can be approximated by certain distributions including the Gaussian ones. Our results are of interest for conditional extreme value models and multivariate extremes as shown in three applications.
This paper is concerned with the limit theory of the extreme order statistics derived from random walks. We establish the joint convergence of the order statistics near the minimum of a random walk in terms of the Feller chains. Detailed descriptions of the limit process are given in the case of simple symmetric walks and Gaussian walks. Some open problems are also presented.
