We have used the Spitzer Space Telescope to obtain Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) 24 um photometry for 37 members of the ~100 Myr old open cluster Blanco 1. For the brightest 25 of these stars (where we have 3sigma uncertainties less than 15%), we find significant mid-IR excesses for eight stars, corresponding to a debris disk detection frequency of about 32%. The stars with excesses include two A stars, four F dwarfs and two G dwarfs. The most significant linkage between 24 um excess and any other stellar property for our Blanco 1 sample of stars is with binarity. Blanco 1 members that are photometric binaries show few or no detected 24 um excesses whereas a quarter of the apparently single Blanco 1 members do have excesses. We have examined the MIPS data for two other clusters of similar age to Blanco 1 -- NGC 2547 and the Pleiades. The AFGK photometric binary star members of both of these clusters also show a much lower frequency of 24 um excesses compared to stars that lie near the single-star main sequence. We provide a new determination of the relation between V-Ks color and Ks-[24] color for main sequence photospheres based on Hyades members observed with MIPS. As a result of our analysis of the Hyades data, we identify three low mass Hyades members as candidates for having debris disks near the MIPS detection limit.
We present results from a spectroscopic study of the very low mass members of the Southern open cluster Blanco 1 using the Gemini-N telescope. We obtained intermediate resolution (R~4400) GMOS spectra for 15 cluster candidate members with I~14-20 mag, and employed a series of membership criteria - proximity to the cluster's sequence in an I/I-Ks color-magnitude diagram (CMD), kinematics agreeing with the cluster systemic motion, magnetic activity as a youth indicator - to classify 10 of these objects as probable cluster members. For these objects, we searched for the presence of the Li I 6708 …
The Lithium Depletion Boundary (LDB) is a robust method for accurately determining the ages of young clusters, but most pre-main-sequence models used to derive LDB ages do not include the effects of magnetic activity on stellar properties. In light of this, we present results from our spectroscopic study of the very low-mass members of the southern open cluster Blanco 1 using the Gemini-North telescope, program IDs: GN-2009B-Q-53 and GN-2010B-Q-96. We obtained GMOS spectra at intermediate resolution for cluster candidate members with $I$$\approx$13--20 mag. From our sample of 43 spectra, we fi…
We present the results of a photometric and astrometric study of the low mass stellar and substellar population of the young open cluster Blanco 1. We have exploited J band data, obtained recently with the Wide Field Camera (WFCAM) on the United Kingdom InfraRed Telescope (UKIRT), and 10 year old I and z band optical imaging from CFH12k and Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), to identify 44 candidate low mass stellar and substellar members, in an area of 2 sq. degrees, on the basis of their colours and proper motions. This sample includes five sources which are newly discovered. We also con…
We present the stellar population, using {\it Gaia}\,DR2 parallax, kinematics, and photometry, of the young ($\sim 100$~Myr), nearby ($\sim 230$~pc) open cluster, Blanco1. A total of 644 member candidates are identified via the unsupervised machine learning method \textsc{StarGO} to find the clustering in the 5-dimensional position and proper motion parameter ($X$, $Y$, $Z$, $μ_α\cosδ$, $μ_δ$) space. Within the tidal radius of $10.0 \pm 0.3$~pc, there are 488 member candidates, 3 times more than those outside. A leading tail and a trailing tail, each of 50--60~pc in the Galactic plane, are fou…
We perform a new analysis of the extant ROSAT and XMM-Newton X-ray surveys of the southern open cluster Blanco 1, utilizing new BVIc photometric and proper motion data sets. In our study, we match optical counterparts to 47 X-ray sources associated with Blanco 1 cluster members, 6 of which were listed in previous X-ray studies as cluster nonmembers. Our new catalog of optical counterparts to X-ray sources clearly traces out the Blanco 1 main sequence in a CMD, extending from early G to mid-M spectral types. Additionally, we derive new Lx as well as Lx/Lbol ratios for confirmed cluster members.…
The reality of a field Argus Association has been doubted in some papers in the literature. We apply Gaia DR2 data to stars previously suggested to be Argus members and conclude that a true association exists with age 40-50 Myr and containing many stars within 100 pc of Earth; Beta Leo and 49 Cet are two especially interesting members. Based on youth and proximity to Earth, Argus is one of the better nearby moving groups to target in direct imaging programs for dusty debris disks and young planets.
We propose 35 star systems within ~70 pc of Earth as newly identified members of nearby young stellar kinematic groups; these identifications include the first A- and late-B type members of the AB Doradus moving group and field Argus Association. All but one of the 35 systems contain a bright solar- or earlier-type star that should make an excellent target for the next generation of adaptive optics (AO) imaging systems on large telescopes. AO imaging has revealed four massive planets in orbit around the λ Boo star HR 8799. Initially the planets were of uncertain mass due in large part to the u…
Because of proximity to the Galactic plane, reliable identification of members of the alpha Persei cluster is often problematic. Based primarily on membership evaluations contained in six published papers, we constructed a mostly complete list of high-fidelity members of spectral type G and earlier that lie within 3 arc degrees of the cluster center. Alpha Persei was the one nearby, rich, young open cluster not surveyed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We examined the first and final data releases of the Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and found 11, or perhaps 12, alpha Per cluster…
We report periods for 33 members of Blanco 1 as measured from KELT-South light curves, the first reported rotation periods for this benchmark zero-age-main-sequence open cluster. The distribution of these stars spans from late-A or early-F dwarfs to mid-K with periods ranging from less than a day to ~8 days. The rotation period distribution has a morphology similar to the coeval Pleiades cluster, suggesting the universal nature of stellar rotation distributions. Employing two different gyrochronology methods, we find an age of 146+13-14 Myr for the cluster. Using the same techniques, we infer …
HD 61005 is a nearby young solar type star that shows a large infrared excess due to a debris disk. The disk has been recently imaged from ground and space, with indications of several components. Some characteristics of the disk suggest the presence of planetary companions around the star, that remain undetected in deep adaptive optics imaging. For a better understanding of the system we aim to refine the determination of the stellar parameters, with emphasis on the stellar age and system orientation. We used ASAS and Hipparcos photometry and FEROS spectra to determine the rotation period, ra…
We present Spitzer IRAC and MIPS 24um imaging of members of the 27+/-5Myr old open cluster IC 4665. Models for the assembly of terrestrial planets through planetesimal collisions and mergers predict episodic dust debris discs at this epoch. We determine that 42(+18-13)% of the solar-type (F5-K5) cluster members have excess emission at 24um indicative of these debris discs, the highest frequency of the clusters studied with Spitzer to date. The majority of these discs have intermediate levels of excess (F_24/F_phot < 2), and no source is found to have extreme levels of excess indicative of a re…
Only four star clusters are known within ~100 pc of Earth. Of these, the Chi1 For cluster has barely been studied. We use the Gaia DR2 catalog and other published data to establish the cluster membership, structure, and age. The age of and distance to the cluster are ~40 Myr and 104 pc, respectively. A remarkable, unprecedented, aspect of the cluster is the large percentage of M-type stars with warm excess infrared emission due to orbiting dust grains -- these stars lie in an annulus that straddles the tidal radius of the cluster. The Chi1 For cluster appears to be closely related to two exten…
This paper presents a detailed kinematic and chemical analysis of 16 members of the Kapteyn moving group. The group does not appear to be chemically homogenous. However, the kinematics and the chemical abundance patterns seen in 14 of the stars in this group are similar to those observed in the well-studied cluster, Omega Centauri. Some members of this moving group may be remnants of the tidal debris of Omega Cen, left in the Galactic disk during the merger event which deposited Omega Cen into the Milky Way.
We present a Spitzer IRAC and MIPS survey of NGC 2451 A and B, two open clusters in the 50-80 Myr age range. We complement these data with extensive ground-based photometry and spectroscopy to identify the cluster members in the Spitzer survey field. We find only two members with 8 micron excesses. The incidence of excesses at 24 microns is much higher, 11 of 31 solar-like stars and 1 of 7 early-type (A) stars. This work nearly completes the debris disk surveys with Spitzer of clusters in the 30-130 Myr range. This range is of inte rest because it is when large planetesimal collisions may have…
We present MIPS 24um and 70um photometry for 205 members of the Upper Scorpius OB Association. These data are combined with published MIPS photometry for 15 additional association members to assess the frequency of circumstellar disks around 5 Myr old stars with spectral types between B0 and M5. Twelve stars have a detectable 70um excess, each of which also has a detectable 24um excess. A total of 54 stars are identified with a 24um excess more than 32% above the stellar photosphere. The MIPS observations reveal 19 excess sources -- 8 A/F/G stars and 11 K/M stars -- that were not previously id…
A possible connection between the presence of large quantities of warm (T$\geq$200 K) circumstellar dust at youthful stars and the existence of wide-separation companion stars has been noted in the literature. Here we point out the existence of a distant companion star to V488 Per, a K-type member of the $α$ Persei cluster with the largest known fractional excess infrared luminosity ($\sim$16\%) of any main sequence star. We also report the presence of a distant companion to the previously recognized warm dust star 2M1337. With these discoveries the existence of a cause and effect relationship…
We report the outcome of a deep multi-wavelength study of the IC2391 young open cluster. We aim at uncovering new low-mass and sub-stellar members of the cluster and identifying new debris disk objects. A 30*30 square arcmin area in IC 2391 was observed using the wide-field imager at the ESO 2.2m telescope. The completeness limits of the photometry at 3 sigma level are V=24.7, Rc=23.7 and Ic=23.0, faint enough to reveal sub-stellar members down to about 0.03 solar masses. Our membership criteria are based on the use of our optical data, in combination with JHKs magnitudes from the 2MASS catalo…
A significant fraction of nearby young moving group members harbor circumstellar debris dust disks. Due to their proximity and youth, these disks are attractive targets for studying the early evolution of debris dust and planetesimal belts. Here we present 70 and 160$μ$m observations of 31 systems in the $β$ Pic moving group, and in the Tucana-Horologium, Columba, Carina and Argus associations, using the Herschel Space Observatory. None of these stars were observed at far-infrared wavelengths before. Our Herschel measurements were complemented by photometry from the WISE satellite for the whol…
We present a search for debris discs amongst M-dwarf members of nearby, young (5-150 Myr) moving groups (MGs) using infrared (IR) photometry, primarily from the Wide Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). A catalogue of 100 MG M-dwarfs that have suitable WISE data is compiled and 19 of these are found to have significant IR excess emission at 22$μ$m. Our search is likely to be complete for discs where the ratio of flux from the disc to flux from the star $f_{\rm d}/f_{*} > 10^{-3}$. The spectral energy distributions are supplemented with 2MASS photometry and data at longer wavelengths and fitted wit…
The bRing robotic observatory network was built to search for circumplanetary material within the transiting Hill sphere of the exoplanet $β$ Pic b across its bright host star $β$ Pic. During the bRing survey of $β$ Pic, it simultaneously monitored the brightnesses of thousands of bright stars in the southern sky ($V$ $\simeq$ 4-8, $δ$ $\lesssim$ -30$^{\circ}$). In this work, we announce the discovery of $δ$ Scuti pulsations in the A-type star HD 156623 using bRing data. HD 156623 is notable as it is a well-studied young star with a dusty and gas-rich debris disk, previously detected using ALM…
We present photometric metallicity measurements for a sample of 2.6 million bulge red clump stars extracted from the Blanco DECam Bulge Survey (BDBS). Similar to previous studies, we find that the bulge exhibits a strong vertical metallicity gradient, and that at least two peaks in the metallicity distribution functions appear at b < -5. We can discern a metal-poor ([Fe/H] ~ -0.3) and metal-rich ([Fe/H] ~ +0.2) abundance distribution that each show clear systematic trends with latitude, and may be best understood by changes in the bulge's star formation/enrichment processes. Both groups exhibi…
Many members of nearby young moving groups exhibit infrared excess attributed to circumstellar debris dust, formed via erosion of planetesimals. With their proximity and well-dated ages, these groups are excellent laboratories for studying the early evolution of debris dust and of planetesimal belts. ALMA can spatially resolve the disk emission, revealing the location and extent of these belts, putting constraints on planetesimal evolution models, and allowing us to study planet-disk interactions. While the main trends of dust evolution in debris disks are well-known, there is almost no inform…
I present the first substantial work to measure the fraction of debris disks for M-dwarfs in nearby moving groups (MGs). Utilising the $AllWISE$ IR catalog, 17 out of 151 MG members are found with an IR photometric excess indicative of disk structure. The M-dwarf debris disk fraction is $\lesssim 6$ per cent in MGs younger than 40\,Myr, and none are found in the groups older than 40\,Myr. Simulations show, however, that debris disks around M-dwarfs are not present above a $WISE$ $W1-W4$ colour of $\sim 2.5$, making calculating the absolute disk fractions difficult. The debris disk dissipation …
The Kapteyn moving group has been postulated as tidal debris from $ω$ Centauri. If true, members of the group should show some of the chemical abundance patterns known for stars in the cluster. We present an optical and near-infrared high-resolution, high-S/N spectroscopic study of 14 stars of the Kapteyn group, plus 10 additional stars (the $ω$ Cen-group) that, while not listed as members of the Kapteyn group as originally defined, have been nevertheless associated dynamically with $ω$ Centauri. Abundances for Na, O, Mg, Al, Ca and Ba were derived from the optical spectra, while the strength …
Using VLT/SPHERE near-infrared dual-band imaging and integral field spectroscopy we discovered an edge-on debris disk around the 17\,Myr old A-type member of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association HD 110058. The edge-on disk can be traced to about 0.6" or 65 AU projected separation. In its northern and southern wings, the disk shows at all wavelengths two prominent, bright and symmetrically placed knots at 0.3" or 32 AU from the star. We interpret these knots as a ring of planetesimals whose collisions may produce most of the dust observed in the disk. We find no evidence for a bow in the disk,…
We present imaging observations at 1.3 millimeters of the debris disk surrounding the nearby M-type flare star AU Mic with beam size 3 arcsec (30 AU) from the Submillimeter Array. These data reveal a belt of thermal dust emission surrounding the star with the same edge-on geometry as the more extended scattered light disk detected at optical wavelengths. Simple modeling indicates a central radius of ~35 AU for the emission belt. This location is consistent with the reservoir of planetesimals previously invoked to explain the shape of the scattered light surface brightness profile through size-…
We present 5 to 15 micron Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) low resolution spectral data of a candidate debris disk around an M4.5 star identified as a likely member of the ~40 Myr old cluster NGC2547. The IRS spectrum shows a silicate emission feature, indicating the presence of warm, small, (sub)micron-sized dust grains in the disk. Of the fifteen previously known candidate debris disks around M-type stars, the one we discuss in this paper is the first to have an observed mid-infrared spectrum and is also the first to have measured silicate emission. We combined the IRS data with ancillary…
We have used the Submillimeter Array (SMA) to make 1.3 millimeter observations of the debris disk surrounding HD 15115, an F-type star with a putative membership in the beta Pictoris moving group. This nearly edge-on debris disk shows an extreme asymmetry in optical scattered light, with an extent almost two times larger to the west of the star than to the east (originally dubbed the "Blue Needle"). The SMA observations reveal resolved emission that we model as a circumstellar belt of thermal dust emission. This belt extends to a radius of ~110 AU, coincident with the break in the scattered li…
Recently, some hot DA-type white dwarfs have been proposed to plausibly be escaping members of the Hyades. We used hydrogen Balmer lines to measure the radial velocities of seven such stars and confirm that three, and perhaps two others, are/were indeed cluster members and one is not. The other candidate Hyad is strongly magnetic and its membership status remains uncertain. The photospheres of at least one quarter of field white dwarf stars are "polluted" by elements heavier than helium that have been accreted. These stars are orbited by extended planetary systems that contain both debris belt…
NGC 3532 is an extremely rich open cluster embedded in the Galactic disc, hitherto lacking a comprehensive, documented membership list. We provide membership probabilities from new radial velocity observations of solar-type and low-mass stars in NGC 3532, in part as a prelude to a subsequent study of stellar rotation in the cluster. Using extant optical and infra-red photometry we constructed a preliminary photometric membership catalogue, consisting of 2230 dwarf and turn-off stars. We selected 1060 of these for observation with the AAOmega spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope and 3…
We have compiled photometry at 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 $μ$m from the all-sky survey performed by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) for all known members of the Taurus complex of dark clouds. Using these data and photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have identified members with infrared excess emission from circumstellar disks and have estimated the evolutionary stages of the detected disks, which include 31 new full disks and 16 new candidate transitional, evolved, evolved transitional, and debris disks. We have also used the WISE All-Sky Source Catalog to search for new di…
We present projected rotational velocities for 20 early-type (B8-A9) and 74 late-type (F2-M8) members of the ~5 Myr old Upper Scorpius OB Association derived from high dispersion optical spectra obtained with the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) on Keck I and the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) on the Magellan Clay telescope. The spectroscopic sample is composed of stars and brown dwarfs with infrared signatures of circumstellar disks, both primordial and debris, and non-excess sources of comparable spectral type. We merge projected rotational velocities, accretion diagnost…
Gas-rich primordial disks and tenuous gas-poor debris disks are usually considered as two distinct evolutionary phases of the circumstellar matter. Interestingly, the debris disk around the young main-sequence star 49 Ceti possesses a substantial amount of molecular gas, and possibly represents the missing link between the two phases. Motivated to understand the evolution of the gas component in circumstellar disks via finding more 49 Ceti-like systems, we carried out a CO J=3-2 survey with Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment, targeting 20 infrared-luminous debris disks. These systems fill the gap b…
We report the discovery of a tight substellar companion to the young solar analog PZ Tel, a member of the Beta Pictoris moving group observed with high contrast adaptive optics imaging as part of the Gemini NICI Planet-Finding Campaign. The companion was detected at a projected separation of 16.4 +/- 1.0 AU (0.33 +/- 0.01") in April 2009. Second-epoch observations in May 2010 demonstrate that the companion is physically associated and shows significant orbital motion. Monte Carlo modeling constrains the orbit of PZ Tel B to eccentricities > 0.6. The near-IR colors of PZ Tel B indicate a spectr…
Nearby late-type stars are excellent targets for seeking young objects in stellar associations and moving groups. The origin of these structures is still misunderstood, and lists of moving group members often change with time and also from author to author. Most members of these groups have been identified by means of kinematic criteria, leading to an important contamination of previous lists by old field stars. We attempt to identify unambiguous moving group members among a sample of nearby-late type stars by studying their kinematics, lithium abundance, chromospheric activity, and other age-…
Context: Debris discs orbiting young stars are key to understand dust evolution and the planetary formation process. We take advantage of a recent membership analysis of the 30 Myr nearby open cluster IC 4665 based on the Gaia and DANCe surveys to revisit the disc population of this cluster. Aims: We aim to study the disc population of IC 4665 using Spitzer (MIPS and IRAC) and WISE photometry. Methods: We use several colour-colour diagrams with empirical photospheric sequences to detect the sources with an infrared excess. Independently, we also fit the spectral energy distribution (SED) of ou…
We report Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8 um and MIPS 24 and 70 um observations of the 32 Ori Group, a recently discovered nearby stellar association situated towards northern Orion. The proximity of the group (~93 pc) has enabled a sensitive search for circumstellar dust around group members, and its age (~20 Myr) corresponds roughly to an epoch thought to be important for terrestrial planet formation in our own solar system. We quantify infrared excess emission due to circumstellar dust among group members, utilizing available optical (e.g. Hipparcos, Tycho) and near-IR (2MA…
We present 24 micron photometry of the intermediate-age open cluster Praesepe. We assemble a catalog of 193 probable cluster members that are detected in optical databases, the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and at 24 micron, within an area of ~ 2.47 square degrees. Mid-IR excesses indicating debris disks are found for one early-type and for three solar-type stars. Corrections for sampling statistics yield a 24 micron excess fraction (debris disk fraction) of 6.5 +- 4.1% for luminous and 1.9 +- 1.2% for solar-type stars. The incidence of excesses is in agreement with the decay trend of deb…
We studied a small comet-shape reflection nebula, located in the dark cloud SL 4 in the Vela Molecular Ridge cloud C, known as BBWo 192E (GM 1-23), and a young infrared cluster embedded into the nebula, for the evidences of recent star formation. We obtained the images of BBWo 192E in Halpha and [SII] lines and in SDSS i' with Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory to discover new Herbig-Haro (HH) flows. 2MASS and WISE surveys were used for the search of the additional member stars of the cluster. We also studied proper motions and parallaxes of the cluster members with…
Carina is a nearby young stellar association. So far, only a small number of stars have been clearly identified as members of this association. In this paper we reanalyse the membership of the association in light of Gaia DR2 data, in particular finding that HD 95086 is a potential member (probability of 71%). This star is noteworthy as one of the few stars that hosts both a detected debris disc and a directly imaged planet. It has previously only been considered as a potential member of the Lower Centaurus Crux (LCC) - part of the Scorpius-Centaurus association. We also reanalyse the age of t…
We identify two ultra-cool ($T_\mathrm{eff} < 4000$ K) metal-polluted (DZ) white dwarfs WDJ2147$-$4035 and WDJ1922$+$0233 as the coolest and second coolest DZ stars known to date with $T_\mathrm{eff} \approx 3050$ K and $T_\mathrm{eff} \approx 3340$ K, respectively. Strong atmospheric collision-induced absorption (CIA) causes the suppression of red optical and infra-red flux in WDJ1922$+$0233, resulting in an unusually blue colour given its low temperature. WDJ2147$-$4035 has moderate infra-red CIA yet has the reddest optical colours known for a DZ white dwarf. Microphysics improvements to the…
We present moderate resolution (R $\sim$ 3575) optical spectra of 19 known or suspected members of the AB Doradus and $β$ Pictoris Moving Groups, obtained with the DeVeny Spectrograph on the 72-inch Perkins telescope at Lowell Observatory. For 4 of 5 recently proposed members, signatures of youth such as Li\,I 6708 Å\, absorption and H$α$ emission further strengthen the case for youth and membership. Effective temperatures are determined via line ratio analyses for the 11 F, G and early K stars observed, and via spectral comparisons for the 8 late-K and M stars observed. We assemble updated ca…
We have performed a survey for new members of the Upper Sco association that have circumstellar disks using mid-infrared photometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Through optical and near-infrared spectroscopy, we have confirmed 185 candidates as likely members of Upper Sco with spectral types ranging from mid-K to M9. They comprise ~36% of the known disk-bearing members of the association. We also have compiled all available mid-infrared photometry from WISE and the Spitzer Space Telescope for the known members of Upper Sco, resulting in a catalog of data for 1608 object…
We present the first spatially resolved scattered-light images of four debris disks around members of the Scorpius-Centaurus (Sco-Cen) OB Association with high-contrast imaging and polarimetry using the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI). All four disks are resolved for the first time in polarized light and one disk is also detected in total intensity. The three disks imaged around HD 111161, HD 143675, and HD 145560 are symmetric in both morphology and brightness distribution. The three systems span a range of inclinations and radial extents. The disk imaged around HD 98363 shows indications of asymm…
We characterize the first 40 Myr of evolution of circumstellar disks through a unified study of the infrared properties of members of young clusters and associations with ages from 2 Myr up to ~ 40 Myr: NGC 1333, NGC 1960, NGC 2232, NGC 2244, NGC 2362, NGC 2547, IC 348, IC 2395, IC 4665, Chamaeleon I, Orion OB1a and OB1b, Taurus, the \b{eta} Pictoris Moving Group, \r{ho} Ophiuchi, and the associations of Argus, Carina, Columba, Scorpius-Centaurus, and Tucana-Horologium. Our work features: 1.) a filtering technique to flag noisy backgrounds, 2.) a method based on the probability distribution of…
We describe the discovery of a bright, young Kuiper belt-like debris disk around HD 115600, a $\sim$ 1.4--1.5 M$_\mathrm{\odot}$, $\sim$ 15 Myr old member of the Sco-Cen OB Association. Our H-band coronagraphy/integral field spectroscopy from the \textit{Gemini Planet Imager} shows the ring has a (luminosity scaled) semi major axis of ($\sim$ 22 AU) $\sim$ 48 AU, similar to the current Kuiper belt. The disk appears to have neutral scattering dust, is eccentric (e $\sim$ 0.1--0.2), and could be sculpted by analogues to the outer solar system planets. Spectroscopy of the disk ansae reveal a slig…
The Disk Detective citizen science project recently released a new catalog of disk candidates found by visual inspection of images from NASA's Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission and other surveys. We applied this new catalog of well-vetted disk candidates to search for new members of nearby young stellar associations (YSAs) using a novel technique based on Gaia data and virtual reality (VR). We examined AB Doradus, Argus, $β$ Pictoris, Carina, Columba, Octans-Near, Tucana-Horologium, and TW Hya by displaying them in VR together with other nearby stars, color-coded to show infra…
We present the fractional distribution of spectroscopic subtypes, range and distribution of surface temperatures, and kinematical properties of the white dwarfs within 25pc of the sun. There is no convincing evidence of halo white dwarfs in the total 25 pc sample of 224 white dwarfs. There is also little to suggest the presence of genuine thick disk subcomponent members within 25 parsecs. It appears that the entire 25 pc sample likely belong to the thin disk. We also find no significant kinematic differences with respect to spectroscopic subtypes. The total DA to non-DA ratio of the 25 pc samp…
In 2010 a sub-stellar companion to the solar analog pre-main sequence star PZ Tel and member of the about 12 Myr old Beta Pic moving group was found by high-contrast direct imaging independently by two teams. In order to determine the basic parameters of this companion more precisely and independent of evolutionary models, hence age independent, we obtained follow-up spectroscopic observations of primary and companion. We use the Spectrograph for INtegral Field Observations in the Near Infrared (SINFONI) at the Very Large Telescope Unit 4/YEPUN of ESO's Paranal Observatory in H+K band and proc…
We present IRS spectra and revised MIPS photometry for the 18 members of the Eta Chamaeleontis cluster. Aged 8 Myr, the Eta Cha cluster is one of the few nearby regions within the 5-10 Myr age range, during which the disk fraction decreases dramatically and giant planet formation must come to an end. For the 15 low-mass members, we measure a disk fraction ~50%, high for their 8 Myr age, and 4 of the 8 disks lack near-IR excesses, consistent with the empirical definition of "transition'' disks. Most of the disks are comparable to geometrically flat disks. The comparison with regions of differen…
In addition to the Sun, six other stars are known to harbor multiple planets and debris disks: HD 69830, HD 38529, HD 128311, HD 202206, HD 82943 and HR 8799. In this paper we set constraints on the location of the dust-producing planetesimals around the latter four systems. We use a radiative transfer model to analyze the spectral energy distributions of the dust disks (including two new Spitzer IRS spectra presented in this paper), and a dynamical model to assess the long-term stability of the planetesimals' orbits. As members of a small group of stars that show evidence of harboring a multi…
We present new deep UBVRI images and high-resolution multi-object optical spectroscopy of the young (~ 6 - 10 Myr old), relatively nearby (800 pc) open cluster IC 2395. We identify nearly 300 cluster members and use the photometry to estimate their spectral types, which extend from early B to middle M. We also present an infrared imaging survey of the central region using the IRAC and MIPS instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, covering the wavelength range from 3.6 to 24 microns. Our infrared observations allow us to detect dust in circumstellar disks originating over a typical ran…
We present a multi-band photometric catalog of $\approx$ 1.7 million cluster members for a field of view of $\approx$ 2x2 degree across $ω$ Cen. Photometry is based on images collected with the Dark Energy Camera on the 4m Blanco telescope and the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. The unprecedented photometric accuracy and field coverage allowed us for the first time to investigate the spatial distribution of $ω$ Cen multiple populations from the core to the tidal radius, confirming its very complex structure. We found that the frequency of blue main-sequence stars is …
The existence of a kinematically defined moving group of stars centred at U = -40, V = -17 km/s referred to as the Hyades Supercluster, has been suggested as the debris of an originally large star forming event, with its core being the present day Hyades open cluster. Using high-resolution UVES spectra, we present elemental abundances for a range of alpha, Fe-peak and neutron-capture elements for 26 proposed supercluster stars. Our results show that the sample stars display a heterogeneous abundance distribution, with a clump around [Fe/H] = +0.15. We also calculate stellar radial velocities a…
This research aims to secure precise distances for cluster delta Scutis in order to investigate their properties via a VI Wesenheit framework. Deep JHKs colour-colour and ZAMS relations derived from ~700 unreddened stars featuring 2MASS photometry and precise HIP parallaxes (d<~25 pc) are applied to establish distances to several benchmark open clusters that host delta Scutis: Hyades, Pleiades, Praesepe, alpha Per, and M67 (d=47+-2,138+-6,183+-8,171+-8,815+-40 pc). That analysis provided constraints on the delta Sct sample's absolute Wesenheit magnitudes (W_VI,0), evolutionary status, and puls…
