Superconductivity-induced changes of phonon lineshapes in niobium have been re-investigated by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. We show that the changes go beyond a simple change in lifetime and frequency when the phonon frequency is close to the superconducting energy gap $2Δ$. The observed lineshapes in elemental niobium are qualitatively similar to those found previously in borocarbide superconductors and agree very well with those predicted by the theory of Allen et al. [PRB 56, 5552 (1997)]. Our results indicate that the peculiar phonon lineshapes in the superconducting state predicted by the theory of Allen et al. are a general phenomenon and not restricted to a particular class of compounds.
A systematic study of irreversible magnetization was performed in bulk Niobium after different surface treatments. Starting with smooth surfaces and abrading them, a strong increase of the critical current is observed up an apparent limiting value. An impressive change of the critical current is also observed in the surface superconductivity (SSC) state, reaching values of the same order of magnitude as in the mixed state. We explain also the observation of strong SSC for magnetic field perpendicular to larges facets in terms of nucleation of SC along bumps of a corrugated surface.
The niobium rich selenide compound Nb5Se4 was synthesized at ambient pressure by high-temperature solid-state reaction in a sealed Ta tube. Resistivity and heat capacity measurements reveal that this compound is superconducting, with a T_c = 1.85K. The electronic contribution to the specific heat γ and the Debye temperature are found to be 18.1 mJ/mol/K^2 and 298 K respectively. The calculated electron-phonon coupling constant λ_ep = 0.5 and the ΔC_p/γTc = 1.42 ratio imply that Nb5Se4 is a weak coupling BCS superconductor. The upper critical field and coherence length are found to be 1.44 T an…
Here we report the observation of extraordinary superconductivity in a pressurized commercial niobium-titanium alloy. We find that its zero-resistance superconductivity persists from ambient pressure to the pressure as high as 261.7 GPa, a record high pressure up to which a known superconducting state can continuously survives. Remarkably, at such an ultra-high pressure, although the ambient pressure volume is shrunk by 45% without structural phase transition, the superconducting transition temperature (TC) increases to ~19.1 K from ~9.6 K, and the critical magnetic field (HC2) at 1.8 K has be…
The interplay between disorder and superconductivity is a subtle and fascinating phenomenon in quantum many body physics. The conventional superconductors are insensitive to dilute nonmagnetic impurities, known as the Anderson's theorem. Destruction of superconductivity and even superconductor-insulator transitions occur in the regime of strong disorder. Hence disorder-enhanced superconductivity is rare and has only been observed in some alloys or granular states. Because of the entanglement of various effects, the mechanism of enhancement is still under debate. Here we report well-controlled …
We have explored the vortex phase diagram in a spherical single crystal of niobium (T ~ 9.3 K) via isothermal and temperature dependent dc magnetization and ac-susceptibility measurements. The crystal has extremely weak pinning that can be inferred from the reversibility of loops below T_c. However, one can visualize the peak effect (PE) feature in the isothermal M-H loops up to T = 8 K. The PE is also prominent in isothermal ac-susceptibility data for H > 750 Oe. An interesting observation in the present study is the prominent fingerprints of surface superconductivity, starting just above the…
Superconducting spintronics in hybrid superconductor/ferromagnet (S-F) heterostructures provides an exciting potential new class of device. The prototypical super-spintronic device is the superconducting spin-valve, where the critical temperature, $T_c$, of the S-layer can be controlled by the relative orientation of two (or more) F-layers. Here, we show that such control is also possible in a simple S/F bilayer. Using field history to set the remanent magnetic state of a thin Er layer, we demonstrate for a Nb/Er bilayer a high level of control of both $T_c$ and the shape of the resistive tran…
A method to treat the surface of Nb is described which potentially can improve the performance of superconducting RF cavities. We present tunneling and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements at the surface of cavity-grade niobium samples coated with a 3 nm alumina overlayer deposited by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). The coated samples baked in ultra high vacuum (UHV) at low temperature reveal at first degraded superconducting surface. However, at temperatures above 450C, the tunneling conductance curves show significant improvements of the superconducting density of states (DOS) …
Phonon measurements in the A15-type superconductors were complicated in the past because of the unavailability of large single crystals for inelastic neutron scattering, e.g., in the case of Nb$_3$Sn, or unfavorable neutron scattering properties in the case of V$_3$Si. Hence, only few studies of the lattice dynamical properties with momentum resolved methods were published, in particular below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. Here, we overcome these problems by employing inelastic x-ray scattering and report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of lattice dyna…
From the magnetic response of Nb-cylinders to time-varying fields the AC-conductivity, $σ'-iσ''$, and the critical current density $J_c^s$ are determined above the upper critical field $H_{c2}$. The field dependencies of $σ'$ and $σ''$ allow us to identify the nucleation of incoherent surface superconductivity (SSC) at $H_{c3}$ and of coherent SSC at $H_{c3}^c\approx 0.81H_{c3}$. The latter result turns out to be independent on different surface roughnesses and surface impurities obtained by surface treatments like chemical (BCP) and electrolytical polishing (EP), and low temperature baking (L…
We report on a combined structural and electronic analysis of niobium ultrathin films (from 2 to 10 nm) deposited in ultra-high vacuum on atomically flat R-plane sapphire wafers. A textured polycrystalline morphology is observed for the thinnest films showing that hetero-epitaxy is not achieved under a thickness of 3.3nm, which almost coincides with the first measurement of a superconducting state. The superconducting critical temperature rise takes place on a very narrow thickness range, of the order of a single monolayer (ML). The thinnest superconducting sample (3 nm/9ML) has an offset crit…
Structure and composition tunable superconductivity, band topology and elastic response of hard binary niobium nitrides Nb$_2$N, Nb$_4$N$_3$ and Nb$_4$N$_5$
We have investigated the pressure-induced phase transition and superconducting properties of niobium disulfide (NbS$_2$) based on the density functional theory. The structures of NbS$_2$ at pressures from 0 to 200 GPa were predicted using the multi-algorithm collaborative (MAC) structure prediction technique. The previously known 1$T$-, 2$H$-, and 3$R$-NbS$_2$ were successfully reproduced. In addition, many metastable structures which are potential to be synthesized were also discovered. Based on the enthalpy calculations, we found that at 26 GPa NbS$_2$ transits from the double-hexagonal (2$H…
Here we report a novel nitridation technique for transforming niobium into hexagonal Nb2N which appears to be superconducting below 1K. The nitridation is achieved by high temperature annealing of Nb films grown on Si3N4/Si (100) substrate under high vacuum. The structural characterization directs the formation of a majority Nb2N phase while the morphology shows granular nature of the films. The temperature dependent resistance measurements reveal a wide metal-to-superconductor transition featuring two distinct transition regions. The region close to the normal state varies strongly with the f…
NbSe$_{2}$ and NbS$_{2}$ are isostructural two-dimensional materials that exhibit contrasting superconducting properties when reduced to the single monolayer limit. Monolayer NbSe$_{2}$ is an Ising superconductor, while there have been no reports of superconductivity in monolayer NbS$_{2}$. NbS$_{x}$Se$_{2-x}$ alloys exhibit an intriguing non-monotonic dependence of the superconducting transition temperature with sulfur content, which has been interpreted as a manifestation of fractal superconductivity. However, several key questions about this result are not known: (1) Does the electronic str…
Long standing data from niobium thin film accelerating cavities will be revisited and analysed by a modified London model of RF superconductivity. Firstly, the applicability of this model is explored using data of the BCS surface resistance and its dependence on the RF magnetic field, temperature and mean free path. Secondly, the RF losses from trapped magnetic flux are analysed with regard to their dependence on these same parameters.
The recent discovery of iron-based superconductors challenges the existing paradigm of high-temperature superconductivity. Owing to their unusual multi-orbital band structure, magnetism, and electron correlation, theories propose a unique sign reversed s-wave pairing state, with the order parameter changing sign between the electron and hole Fermi pockets. However, because of the complex Fermi surface topology and material related issues, the predicted sign reversal remains unconfirmed. Here we report a novel phase-sensitive technique for probing unconventional pairing symmetry in the polycrys…
Interfacing bulk conducting topological Bi$_2$Se$_3$ films with s-wave superconductors initiates strong superconducting order in the nontrivial surface states. However, bulk insulating topological (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x})_2$Te$_3$ films on bulk Nb instead exhibit a giant attenuation of surface superconductivity, even for films only two-layers thick. This massive suppression of proximity pairing is evidenced by ultrahigh-resolution band mappings and by contrasting quantified superconducting gaps with those of heavily n-doped topological Bi$_2$Se$_3$/Nb. The results underscore the limitations of usin…
Parasitic electromagnetic fields are shown to strongly suppress the quality (Q)-factor of superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators via non-local dissipation in the macroscopic environment. Numerical simulation and low temperature measurements demonstrate how this parasitic loss can be reduced, establishing a Lorentzian lineshape in the resonator frequency response and yielding a loaded Q-factor of 2.4 x 10^5 for niobium devices on sapphire substrates. In addition, we report the dependence of the Q and resonance frequency shift Delta f_0 with input power and temperature in the limit where …
In magnetic fields applied within the angular range of the surface superconductivity state a magnetically anisotropic layered medium is created in structurally isotropic, sufficiently thick niobium films. Surface (Kulik) vortices residing in the superconducting sheaths on both main film surfaces in tilted fields are shown to undergo a decoupling transition from a coherent to an independent behavior, similar to the behavior observed for Giaever transformer. At the transition a feature in pinning properties is measured, which implies different pinning for the lattice of surface vortices coherent…

Superconducting vortex lattices, glasses and liquids attract great interest as model systems of crystallization and as a source of microscopic information of the nature of superconductivity. We report for the first time direct microscopic measurements of the vortex lattice tilt modulus c44 in ultra-pure niobium using time-resolved small angle neutron scattering. Besides a general trend to faster vortex lattice dynamics for increasing temperatures we observe a dramatic changeover of the relaxation process associated with the non-trivial vortex lattice morphology in the intermediate mixed state.…
A hexagonal oxynitride (Li0.88_0.12)Nb3.0(O0.13N0.87)4 was synthesized through ammonia nitridation of LiNb3O8. The structural analysis revealed that this oxynitride consists of alternate stacking of octahedral and prismatic layers with different Li/Nb ratios: significant amounts of Li and Nb atoms (Li/Nb = 43/57) coexist in the octahedral layer, while the prismatic site is preferentially occupied by Nb (Li/Nb = 3/97). A metallic behavior was accompanied by an abrupt drop of electrical resistivity at about 3 K. Furthermore, large diamagnetism and specific-heat anomaly were observed below this t…
Point contact tunneling (PCT) spectroscopy measurements are reported over wide areas of cm-sized cut outs from niobium superconducting RF cavities. A comparison is made between a high-quality, conventionally processed (CP) cavity with a high field Q drop for acceleration field E $>$ 20 MV/m and a nitrogen doped (N-doped) cavity that exhibits an increasing Q up to fields approaching 15 MV/m. The CP cavity displays hot spot regions at high RF fields where Q-drop occurs as well as unaffected regions (cold spots). PCT data on cold spots reveals a near ideal BCS density of states (DOS) with gap par…
Superconducting devices are prone to reduced performance caused by impurities and defects along the edges of their wires, which can lead to local current crowding. In this study, we explored the use of helium ion irradiation to modify the lattice structure of the superconducting material to change its intrinsic properties. The process will allow us to directly pattern devices and potentially improve the quality of the nanowires. To achieve this, we used the ion beam from a scanning helium ion microscope (HIM) to localize damage on a superconducting material to create a nanowire. Two experiment…
Hole gases in planar germanium can have high mobilities in combination with strong spin-orbit interaction and electrically tunable g-factors, and are therefore emerging as a promising platform for creating hybrid superconductor-semiconductor devices. A key challenge towards hybrid Ge-based quantum technologies is the design of high-quality interfaces and superconducting contacts that are robust against magnetic fields. In this work, by combining the assets of aluminum, which provides good contact to the Ge, and niobium, which has a significant superconducting gap, we demonstrate highly transpa…
We report a simple method for the fabrication of Niobium superconducting (SC) tips for scanning tunnelling microscopy which allow atomic resolution. The tips, formed in-situ by the mechanical breaking of a niobium wire, reveal a clear SC gap of 1.5 meV and a critical temperature Tc=9.2+-0.3 K as deduced from Superconductor Insulator Normal metal (NIS) and Superconductor Insulator Superconductor (SIS) spectra. These match the values of bulk Nb samples. We systematically find an enhanced value of the critical magnetic field in which superconductivity in the tip is destroyed (around 1 T for some …
Ionic gating is a powerful technique for tuning the physical properties of a material via electric field-induced charge doping, but is prone to introduce extrinsic disorder and undesired electrochemical modifications in the gated material beyond pure electrostatics. Conversely, reversible, volatile and electrostatic modulation is pivotal in the reliable design and operation of novel device concepts enabled by the ultrahigh induced charge densities attainable via ionic gating. Here we demonstrate a simple and effective method to achieve reversible and volatile gating of surface-sensitive ultrat…
We performed a Raman scattering study of thin films of LiTi$_2$O$_4$ spinel oxide superconductor. We detected four out of five Raman active modes, with frequencies in good accordance with our first-principles calculations. Three T$_{2g}$ modes show a Fano lineshape from 5 K to 295 K, which suggests an electron-phonon coupling in LiTi$_2$O$_4$. Interestingly, the electron-phonon coupling shows an anomaly across the negative to positive magnetoresistance transition at 50 K, which may be due to the unset of other competing orders. The strength of the electron-phonon interaction estimated from the…
We study low-temperature transport through carbon nanotube quantum dots in the Coulomb blockade regime coupled to niobium-based superconducting leads. We observe pronounced conductance peaks at finite source-drain bias, which we ascribe to elastic and inelastic cotunneling processes enhanced by the coherence peaks in the density of states of the superconducting leads. The inelastic cotunneling lines display a marked dependence on the applied gate voltage which we relate to different tunneling-renormalizations of the two subbands in the nanotube. Finally, we discuss the origin of an especially …
We describe an experiment in superconductivity suitable for an advanced undergraduate laboratory. Point-contact spectroscopy is performed by measuring the differential conductance between an electrochemically etched gold tip and a 100-nm superconducting niobium film with a transition temperature Tc ~= 7 K. By fitting the results to Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory using a finite lifetime of quasiparticles, we obtain a superconducting gap energy δ~= 1.53 meV, a lower bound to the Fermi velocity vF >= 3.1 x 10^-7 cm/s, and a BCS coherence length ζ~= 43 nm for niobium. These results are in good ag…
Strontium titanate is a low-temperature, non-Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor that superconducts to carrier concentrations lower than in any other system and exhibits avoided ferroelectricity at low temperatures. Neither the mechanism of superconductivity in strontium titanate nor the importance of the structure and dielectric properties for the superconductivity are well understood. We studied the effects of twin structure on superconductivity in a 5.5-nm-thick layer of niobium-doped SrTiO$_{3}$ embedded in undoped SrTiO$_{3}$. We used a scanning superconducting quantum interference d…
Rock-salt type niobium nitride ($δ$-NbN) is a well-known superconductor having superconducting transition temperature (Tc) $\approx$ 18\,K and a large superconducting gap $\approx$3\,meV. The Tc of $δ$-NbN thin film exhibits a large scattering irrespective of the growth conditions and lattice parameter. In this work, we investigate the atomic origin of suppression of Tc in $δ$-NbN thin film by employing combined methods of experiments and ab-initio simulations. Sputtered $δ$-NbN thin films with different disorder were analyzed through electrical resistivity and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. A…
High Critical Temperature and Field Superconductivity in Nb$_{0.85}$X$_{0.15}$, (X = Ti, Zr, Hf) Alloys: Promising Candidates for Superconducting Devices
The proximity-induced superconducting state in the 3-dimensional topological insulator HgTe has been studied using electronic transport of a normal metal-superconducting point contact as a spectroscopic tool (Andreev point contact spectroscopy). By analyzing the conductance as a function of voltage for various temperatures, magnetic fields and gate-voltages, we find evidence, in equilibrium, for an induced order parameter in HgTe of $70\,μ$eV and a niobium order parameter of $1.1\,$meV. To understand the full conductance curve as a function of applied voltage we suggest a non-equilibrium drive…
Niobium-zirconium (Nb-Zr) alloy is an old superconductor that is a promising new candidate for superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavity applications. Using density-functional and Eliashberg theories, we show that addition of Zr to a Nb surface in small concentrations increases the critical temperature $T_c$ and improves other superconducting properties. Furthermore, we calculate $T_c$ for Nb-Zr alloys across a broad range of Zr concentrations, showing good agreement with the literature for disordered alloys as well as the potential for significantly higher $T_c$ in ordered alloys near 75%N…
The search for unconventional superconductivity has been focused on materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and unique crystal lattices. Doped bismuth selenide (Bi$_2$Se$_3$) is a strong candidate given the topological insulator nature of the parent compound and its triangular lattice. The coupling between the physical properties in the superconducting state and its underlying crystal symmetry is a crucial test for unconventional superconductivity. In this paper, we report direct evidence that the superconducting magnetic response couples strongly to the underlying 3-fold crystal symmetry in…
Inelastic light (Raman) scattering has been used to study electronic excitations and phonon anomalies in detwinned, slightly overdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.95}$ and moderately overdoped Y$_{0.85}$Ca$_{0.15}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.95}$ single crystals. In both samples modifications of the electronic pair-breaking peaks when interchanging the a- and b-axis were observed. The lineshapes of several phonon modes involving plane and apical oxygen vibrations exhibit pronounced anisotropies with respect to the incident and scattered light field configurations. Based on a theoretical model that takes both ele…
If high temperature cuprate superconductivity is due to electronic correlations, then the energy difference between the normal and superconducting states can be expressed in terms of the occupied part of the single particle spectral function. The latter can, in principle, be determined from angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data. As a consequence, the energy gain driving the development of the superconducting state is intimately related to the dramatic changes in the photoemission lineshape when going below Tc. These points are illustrated in the context of the "mode" model used to fit ARPE…
The entanglement of charge density wave (CDW), superconductivity, and topologically nontrivial electronic structure has recently been discovered in the kagome metal $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) family. With high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study the electronic properties of CDW and superconductivity in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. The spectra around $\bar{K}$ is found to exhibit a peak-dip-hump structure associated with two separate branches of dispersion, demonstrating the isotropic CDW gap opening below $E_{\rm F}$. The peak-dip-hump lineshape is contributed by linearly di…
High-temperature superconductivity in iron-arsenic materials (pnictides) near an antiferromagnetic phase raises the possibility of spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing. However, the interplay between antiferromagnetic fluctuations and superconductivity remains unclear in the underdoped regime, which is closer to the antiferromagnetic phase. Here we report that the superconducting gap of the underdoped pnictides scales linearly with the transition temperature, and that a distinct pseudogap coexisting with the SC gap develops on underdoping. This pseudogap occurs on Fermi surface sheets connected b…
A theory of strongly correlated electron or hole liquids with the fermion condensate is presented and applied to the consideration of quasiparticle excitations in high temperature superconductors, in their superconducting and normal states. This theory describes maximum values of the superconducting gap which can be as big as $Δ_1\sim 0.1ε_F$, with $ε_F$ being the Fermi level. We show that the critical temperature $2T_c\simeqΔ_1$. If there exists the pseudogap above $T_c$ then $2T^*\simeqΔ_1$, and $T^*$ is the temperature at which the pseudogap vanishes. A discontinuity in the specific heat at…
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been attracting significant interest due to a range of properties, such as layer-dependent inversion symmetry, valley-contrasted Berry curvatures, and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Of particular interest is niobium diselenide (NbSe2), whose superconducting state in few-layer samples is profoundly affected by an unusual type of SOC called Ising SOC. Combined with the reduced dimensionality, the latter stabilizes the superconducting state against magnetic fields up to ~35 T and could lead to other exotic properties such as nodal an…
