Inelastic light (Raman) scattering has been used to study electronic excitations and phonon anomalies in detwinned, slightly overdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.95}$ and moderately overdoped Y$_{0.85}$Ca$_{0.15}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.95}$ single crystals. In both samples modifications of the electronic pair-breaking peaks when interchanging the a- and b-axis were observed. The lineshapes of several phonon modes involving plane and apical oxygen vibrations exhibit pronounced anisotropies with respect to the incident and scattered light field configurations. Based on a theoretical model that takes both electronic and phononic contributions to the Raman spectra into account, we attribute the anisotropy of the superconductivity-induced changes in the phonon lineshapes to a small s-wave admixture to the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pair wave-function. Our theory allows us to disentangle the electronic Raman signal from the phononic part and to identify corresponding interference terms. We argue that the Raman spectra are consistent with an s-wave admixture with an upper limit of 20 percent.
We study theoretically the chain and in-plane optical conductivities of detwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{y}$. We elaborate that the chain is superconducting for $y>6.67$ while insulating for $y<6.67$ due to the competition between the plane-chain coupling and the antiferromagnetic order, corresponding to a superconductor-insulator transition. Stemming also from the coupling between the plane and chain, a new peak emerges at a low frequency in the in-plane spectra in the superconducting state, while it disappears in the normal state. Our scenario accounts satisfactorily for very recent experiments.
The in-plane dielectric response of detwinned YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.95}$ has been studied by far-infared ellipsometry. A surprisingly lare number of in-plane polarized modes are observed. Some of them correspond to pure phonon modes. Others posses a large electronic contribution which strongly increases in the superconducting state. The free carrier response and the collective modes exhibit a pronounced a-b anisotropy. We discuss our results in terms of a CDW state in the 1-d CuO chains and induced charge density fluctuations within the 2-d CuO$_{2}$ planes.
We observe an anomalous oxygen isotope effect on the a-axis component of the far-infrared electronic response of detwinned YBa2Cu3$^{16,18}$O$_{6.9}$. For $^{18}$O a pronounced low-energy electronic mode (LEM) appears around 240 cm$^{-1}$. This a-axis LEM exhibits a clear aging effect, after one year it is shifted to 190 cm$^{-1}$. For $^{16}$O we cannot resolve a corresponding a-axis LEM above 120 cm$^{-1}$. We interpret the LEM in terms of a collective electronic mode that is pinned by `isotopic defects', i.e. by the residual $^{16}$O in the matrix of $^{18}$O.
We report results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon dispersions on a detwinned sample of YBaCu3O7 and compare them with model calculations. Plane oxygen bond stretching phonon branches disperse steeply downwards from the zone center in both the a and the b direction indicating a strong electron-phonon coupling. Half way to the zone boundary, the phonon peaks become ill-defined but we see no need to invoke unit cell doubling or charge stripe formation: lattice dynamical shell model calculations predict such behavior as a result of branch anticrossings. There were no observa…
The a-axis optical properties of a detwinned single crystal of YBa_2Cu_3O_6.50 in the ortho II phase (Ortho II Y123, T_c= 59 K) were determined from reflectance data over a wide frequency range (70 - 42 000 cm^-1) for nine temperature values between 28 and 295 K. Above 200 K the spectra are dominated by a broad background of scattering that extends to 1 eV. Below 200 K a shoulder in the reflectance appears and signals the onset of scattering at 400 cm^-1. In this temperature range we also observe a peak in the optical conductivity at 177 cm^-1. Below 59 K, the superconducting transition temper…
Motivated by a recent neutron scattering experiment on detwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ superconductor, we examine the frequency and doping dependence of the anisotropy in the spin and charge fluctuation arising from the coupling between the plane and the chain. Starting from the two-dimensional $t$-$t^{'}$-$J$ model and using the random-phase approximation (RPA), we find a pronounced anisotropy of the incommensurate (IC) peaks in the spin channel, namely the peak intensity at the $(π\pmδ,π)$ direction is stronger than that at the $(π,π\pmδ)$ direction in a wide frequency range from $ω=0.2J$ t…
The superconducting transition in a single overdoped, detwinned YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) crystal is studied using four different probes. Whereas the AC and DC magnetic susceptibilities find a dominant transition at 88 K with a smaller effect near 92 K, the specific heat and electrical resistivity reveal only a single transition at 88 K and 92 K, respectively. Under hydrostatic pressures to 0.60 GPa these two transitions shift in opposite directions, their separation increasing. The present experiments clearly show that the bulk transition lies at 88 K and originates from fully oxygenated YBCO; the 92 …
We report on an \textit{ab}-anisotropy of $J_{c \parallel b}/J_{c \parallel a}% \cong 1.8$ and $I_{c}R_{n \parallel b}/I_{c}R_{n \parallel a}\cong 1.2$ in ramp-edge junctions between untwinned YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ and $s$% -wave Nb. For these junctions, the angle $θ$ with the YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ crystal b-axis is varied as a single parameter. The $R_{n}$A($θ$)-dependence presents 2-fold symmetry. The minima in $I_{c}R_{n}$ at $θ\cong 50^{\circ}$ suggest a real s-wave subdominant component and negligible $d_{xy}$-wave or imaginary s-wave admixtures. The $I_{c}R_{n}$($θ$)-dependence is …
Within the complex phase diagram of the hole-doped cuprates, seizing the nature of the mysterious pseudo-gap phase is essential to unravel the microscopic origin of high-temperature superconductivity. Below the pseudo-gap temperature $\rm T^{\star}$, evidences for intra-unit-cell orders breaking the 4-fold rotation symmetry have been provided by neutron diffraction and scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Using polarized neutron diffraction on a detwinned $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}$ sample, we here report a distinct a-b anisotropy of the intra-unit-cell magnetic structure factor below $\rm T^{\star}$, …
Recent inelastic neutron scattering measurements found that the spin susceptibility of detwinned and highly ordered ortho-II YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.5} exhibits, in both the normal and superconducting states, one-dimensional incommensurate modulations at low energies which were interpreted as a signature of dynamic stripes. We propose an alternative model based on quasiparticle transitions between the arcs of a truncated Fermi surface. Such transitions are resonantly enhanced by scattering to the triplet spin resonance. We show that the anisotropy in the experimental spin response is consistent with thi…
We report on small-angle neutron scattering studies of the intrinsic vortex lattice (VL) structure in detwinned YBa2Cu3O7 at 2 K, and in fields up to 10.8 T. Because of the suppressed pinning to twin-domain boundaries, a new distorted hexagonal VL structure phase is stabilized at intermediate fields. It is separated from a low-field hexagonal phase of different orientation and distortion by a first-order transition at 2.0(2) T that is probably driven by Fermi surface effects. We argue that another first-order transition at 6.7(2) T, into a rhombic structure with a distortion of opposite sign, …
Intra-unit cell magnetic order has been observed in four different families of high-temperature superconductors from polarized neutron diffraction experiments and supported by several other techniques. That order, which does not break translation symmetry, is consistent with the predicted orbital moments generated by two microscopic loop currrents in each CuO$_2$ cell. Recently, using polarized neutron diffraction, Croft {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. B 96, 214504 (2017)] claim to find no evidence for such orbital loop currents in charge ordered ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}}$. Their experiment is done with…
We report a detailed Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics in detwinned single crystals of the underdoped high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x (x=0.75, 0.6, 0.55 and 0.45). Whereas at room temperature the phonon spectra of these compounds are similar to that of optimally doped YBa2Cu3O6.99, additional Raman-active modes appear upon cooling below ~170-200 K in underdoped crystals. The temperature dependence of these new features indicates that they are associated with the incommensurate charge density wave state recently discovered using synchrotron x-ray scattering techniques o…
We report temporal changes in Raman-scattering spectra of detwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ single crystals under exposure to red laser light polarized along the crystallographic $a$-axis. A recent publication by Bakr et al. (Phys. Rev. B 88 214517 (2013)) identified new Raman-active modes that appear upon cooling below $T \sim 200$ K, and attributed these modes to charge ordering phenomena observed in x-ray scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments on the same materials. Here we report that the intensities of these modes depend not only on temperature and oxygen content, but also o…
We report a $^{63}$Cu NMR investigation in detwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ single crystals, focusing on the highly underdoped regime (y=6.35-6.6). Measurements of both the spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation rates of $^{63}$Cu uncover the emergence of static order at a well-defined onset temperature $T_0$ without a known order parameter as yet. While $T_0$ is rapidly suppressed with increasing hole doping concentration $p$, the spin pseudogap was identified only near and above the doping content at which $T_0\rightarrow 0$. Our data indicate the presence of a critical hole doping $p_c\sim 0.1…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the temperature dependence of the spin excitations of a detwinned superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.45}$ ($T_c=48$ K). In contrast to earlier work on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.5}$ ($T_c=58$ K), where the prominent features in the magnetic spectra consist of a sharp collective magnetic excitation termed ``resonance'' and a large ($\hbarω\approx 15$ meV) superconducting spin gap, we find that the spin excitations in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.45}$ are gapless and have a much broader resonance. Our detailed mapping of magnetic scattering along the $a^\ast$/$b^\ast$-…
For orthorhombic superconductors we define thermodynamic anisotropy $N \equiv d T_c/d ε_{22} - dT_c/d ε_{11}$ as the difference in how superconducting $T_c$ varies with strains $ε_{ii}$, $i=(1, 2)$, along the in-plane directions. We study the hole doping ($p$) dependence of $N$ on detwinned single crystals of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO) using ultrasound technique. While the structural orthorhombicity of YBCO reduces monotonically with decreasing doping over $0.065 <p<0.16$, we find that the thermodynamic anisotropy shows an intriguing enhancement at intermediate doping level, which is…
A detailed study of the Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) spectra of the high-$T_c$ cuprates based on the Fermi liquid (FL) picture is given. We focus on the issue of the transformation between the commensurate and incommensurate (IC) excitation driven by frequency or $temperature$. For La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO), the condition of small $Δ(0)/v_F a$ (where $a$ is the lattice constant, and henceforth will be set to 1) can simultaneously reproduces the always existing IC peaks in the superconducting (SC) and normal state, and the always fixed location at temperature or frequency change. For…
Recently, charge density wave (CDW) order in the CuO$_2$ planes of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ was detected using resonant soft x-ray scattering. An important question remains: is the chain layer responsible for this charge ordering? Here, we explore the energy and polarization dependence of the resonant scattering intensity in a detwinned sample of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.75}$ with ortho-III oxygen ordering in the chain layer. We show that the ortho-III CDW order in the chains is distinct from the CDW order in the planes. The ortho-III structure gives rise to a commensurate superlattice refl…
Recent microwave conductivity measurements of detwinned, high-purity, slightly overdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.993}$ crystals reveal a linear temperature dependence and a near-Drude lineshape for temperatures between 1 and 20 K and frequencies ranging from 1 to 75 GHz. Prior theoretical work has shown that simple models of scattering by point defects (impurities) in d-wave superconductors are inconsistent with these results. It has therefore been suggested that scattering by extended defects such as twin boundary remnants, left over from the detwinning process, may also be important. We calcu…
We study the polarization-dependent electronic Raman response of untwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ superconductors employing a tight-binding band structure with anisotropic hopping matrix parameters and a superconducting gap with a mixing of $d$- and s-wave symmetry. Using general arguments we find screening terms in the $B^{\}_{1g}$ scattering channel which are required by gauge invariance. As a result, we obtain a small but measurable softening of the pair-breaking peak, whose position has been attributed for a long time to twice the superconducting gap maximum. Furthermore, we predict superc…
