In this short note, we prove the supersymmetric Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations between N=8 supergravity (SUGRA) and N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) tree-level amplitudes in the frame of S-matrix program, especially we do not use string theory or the explicit Lagrangian form of corresponding theories. Our supersymmetric KLT relations naturally unify the non-supersymmetric KLT relations and newly discovered gauge theory identities and produce more identities for amplitudes involving scalars and fermions. We point out also that these newly discovered identities can be used to reduce helicity basis from (n-3)! further down.
We propose a new formulation of the complete tree-level S-matrix of N = 8 supergravity. The new formula for n particles in the k R-charge sector is an integral over the Grassmannian G(2,n) and uses the Veronese map into G(k,n). The image of a point in G(2,n) is required to be in the "complement" of a 2|8-plane thus making the SU(8) R-symmetry manifest. The integrand is the ratio of two determinants. The numerator is an analog of Hodges' recent determinant formula for MHV amplitudes. The denominator is a 2(n+k-2) x 2(n+k-2) minor of a 2(n+k) x 2(n+k) matrix of rank 2(n+k-2). Just as Hodges' for…
In this short note, we present two results about KLT relations discussed in recent several papers. Our first result is the re-derivation of Mason-Skinner MHV amplitude by applying the S_{n-3} permutation symmetric KLT relations directly to MHV amplitude. Our second result is the equivalence proof of the newly discovered S_{n-2} permutation symmetric KLT relations and the well-known S_{n-3} permutation symmetric KLT relations. Although both formulas have been shown to be correct by BCFW recursion relations, our result is the first direct check using the regularized definition of the new formula…
We derive a new non-singular tree-level KLT relation for the $n=5$-point amplitudes, with manifest $2(n-2)!$ symmetry, using information from one-loop amplitudes and IR divergences, and speculate how one might extend it to higher n-point functions. We show that the subleading-color ${\cal N}=4$ SYM 5-point amplitude has leading IR divergence of $1/ε$, which is essential for the applications of this paper. We also propose a relation between the subleading-color ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity 1-loop 5-point amplitudes, valid for the IR divergences and possibly for the whole ampli…
We consider the generalization of the heterotic action considered by Cherkis and Schwarz where the chiral bosons are introduced in a manifestly covariant way using an auxiliary field. In particular, we construct the kappa-symmetric heterotic action in ten-dimensional supergravity background coupled to super Yang-Mills theory and prove its kappa-symmetry. The usual Bianchi identity of Type I supergravity with super Yang-Mills $dH_3= -\tr F\wedge F$ is crucially used. For technical reason, the Yang-Mills field is restricted to be abelian.
An infra-red fixed point of ${\mathcal N}=1$ super-Yang-Mills theory is believed to be dual to a solution of five-dimensional gauged ${\mathcal N}=8$ supergravity. We test this conjecture at next to leading order in the large $N$ expansion by computing bulk one-loop corrections to the anomaly coefficient $a-c$. The one-loop corrections are non-zero for all values of the bulk mass, and not just special ones as claimed in previous work.
We present some new supersymmetric solutions of massive IIA supergravity involving D0-branes, a D8-brane and a string. For the bosonic fields we use a general ansatz with SO(8) symmetry.
We demonstrate that amplitudes based on matter supermultiplets can be combined to provide amplitudes of vector supermultiplets by means of KLT relations. In practice we do this by developing a procedure for removing supersymmetry supercharges from super Yang-Mills theory and supergravity supermultiplets, reducing them to vector and chiral supermultiplets respectively. This way, we reduce the super KLT relations to chiral KLT relations making chiral squaring of amplitudes manifest. We study these chiral KLT relations, discussing permutation symmetry and vanishing relations. Finally some explici…
We study counter-terms of one- and two-point Green functions of some special operators in ${\cal N}=1$ SYM from their SUGRA duals from the consideration of AdS/CFT or gauge/gravity correspondence. We consider both the Maldacena-Nunez solution and the Klebanov-Strassler-Tseytlin solution that are proposed to be SUGRA duals of ${\cal N}=1$ SYM. We obtain radial/energy-scale relation for each solution by comparing SUGRA calculations with the field theory results. Using these relations we evaluate the $β$-function of ${\cal N}=1$ SYM. We find that the leading order term can be accurately obtained …
With this article, we initiate a systematic study of some of the symmetry properties of unimodular gravity, building on much of the known structure of general relativity, and utilising the powerful technology developed in that context. In particular, we show, up to four-points and tree-level, that the KLT relations of perturbative gravity hold for tracefree or unimodular gravity.
We study consequences of the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations applied to tree amplitudes in toroidal compactifications of string theory to four dimensions. The closed string tree amplitudes with massless external states respect a global SU(4)xSU(4) symmetry, which is enhanced to the SU(8) R-symmetry of N=8 supergravity in the field theory limit. Our analysis focuses on two aspects: (i) We provide a detailed account of the simplest SU(8)-violating amplitudes. We classify these processes and derive explicit superamplitudes for all local 5- and 6-point operators with SU(4)xSU(4) symmetry at ord…
We study a class of non-protected local composite operators which occur in the R symmetry singlet channel of the OPE of two stress-tensor multiplets in {\cal N}=4 SYM. At tree level these are quadrilinear scalar dimension four operators, two single-traces and two double-traces. In the presence of interaction, due to a non-trivial mixing under renormalization, they split into linear combinations of conformally covariant operators. We resolve the mixing by computing the one-loop two-point functions of all the operators in an {\cal N}=1 setup, then diagonalizing the anomalous dimension matrix and…
We study single soft scalar emission amplitudes of $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity (SUGRA) at the one-loop level using an explicit formula for one-loop amplitudes in terms of tree amplitudes, which in turn are evaluated using supersymmetric BCFW recursion relations. It turns out that the infrared finite parts of all such amplitudes vanish in the soft momentum limit, which supports the conjecture that $E_{7(7)}$ symmetry has no anomalies at the one-loop level.

The correspondence between the four-dimensional SU(N), $\cN = 4$ SYM taken at large $N$ and the type II B SUGRA on the $AdS_5\times S_5$ background is considered. We argue that the classical equations of motion in the SUGRA picture can be interpreted as that of the renormalization group on the SYM side. In fact, when the D3-brane is slightly excited higher derivative terms in the field theory on its world-volume deform it form the conformal $\cN = 4$ SYM limit. We give arguments in favor of that the deformation goes in the way set by the SUGRA equations of motion. Concrete example of the s-wav…
Color-factor symmetry is used to derive a KLT-type relation for tree-level QCD amplitudes containing gluons and an arbitrary number of massive or massless quark-antiquark pairs, generalizing the expression for Yang-Mills amplitudes originally postulated by Bern, De Freitas, and Wong. An explicit expression is given for all amplitudes with two or fewer quark-antiquark pairs in terms of the (modified) momentum kernel. We also introduce the bicolor scalar theory, the "zeroth copy" of QCD, containing massless biadjoint scalars and massive bifundamental scalars, generalizing the biadjoint scalar th…
We continue our study of the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) factorization of winding string amplitudes. In a toroidal compactification, amplitudes for winding closed string states factorize into products of amplitudes for open strings ending on an array of D-branes localized in the compactified directions; the specific D-brane configuration is determined by the closed string data. In this paper, we study a zero Regge slope limit of the KLT relations between winding string amplitudes. Such a limit of string theory requires a critically tuned Kalb-Ramond field in a compact direction, and leads to a se…
By applying the known expressions for SYM and SUGRA tree amplitudes, we write generating functions for the NNMHV box coefficients of SYM as well as the MHV, NMHV, and NNMHV box coefficients for SUGRA. The all-multiplicity generating functions utilize covariant, on-shell superspace whereby the contribution from arbitrary external states in the supermultiplet can be extracted by Grassmann operators. In support of the relation between dual Wilson loops and SYM scattering amplitudes at weak coupling, the SYM amplitudes are presented in a manifestly dual superconformal form. We introduce ordered bo…
Conventional wisdom says that the simpler the Lagrangian of a theory the simpler its perturbation theory, but an increased understanding of the structure of the S-matrix in gauge theories and gravity has been pointing to the opposite conclusion. In this paper we suggest that N=8 SUGRA has the simplest interacting S-matrix in 4D. Using Grassmann coherent states for external particles shows that amplitudes with maximal SUSY are smooth objects, with the action of SUSY manifest. We show that all tree amplitudes in N=4 SYM and N=8 SUGRA vanish at (supersymmetric) infinite complex momentum, and can …
We present new formulas for $n$-particle tree-level scattering amplitudes of six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) and $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supergravity (SUGRA). They are written as integrals over the moduli space of certain rational maps localized on the $(n-3)!$ solutions of the scattering equations. Due to the properties of spinor-helicity variables in six dimensions, the even-$n$ and odd-$n$ formulas are quite different and have to be treated separately. We first propose a manifestly supersymmetric expression for the even-$n$ amplitudes of $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ SYM theory…
In this thesis we elaborate on the three subjects of the title. We first show that supertubes exist and still preserve some supersymmetry in a large variety of curved backgrounds. Within the AdS/CFT correspondence we study the supersymmetry of rotating strings with 3 angular momenta, and we consider the possibility of adding matter in a stable but non-supersymmetric way. We contribute to the extension of the duality to more realistic YM theories by constructing the sugra dual of an N=2 pure SYM in 3d, given in terms of a Calabi-Yau four-fold in M-theory. We study the unitarity of noncommutativ…
We show that 10D spinor helicity formalism can be understood as spinor moving frame approach to supersymmetric particles extended to the description of amplitudes. This allows us to develop the spinor helicity formalism for 11D supergravity and a new constrained superfield formalism for 10D SYM and 11D SUGRA amplitudes. We show how the constrained on-shell superfields, one-particle counterparts of the superamplitudes, can be obtained by quantization of massless superparticle mechanics. We make some stages towards the calculation of amplitudes of 10D SYM and 11D SUGRA in this framework. In part…
The $N=1$, $D=10$ Supergravity--Super--Yang--Mills (SUGRA-SYM) theory is plagued by ABBJ gauge and Lorentz anomalies which are cancelled via the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism. Due to the fact that the ABBJ anomalies are not invariant under supersymmetry (SUSY) transformations one concludes that the theory is plagued also by a SUSY anomaly. For the gauge groups $SO(32)$ and $E_8\times E_8$ we compute this SUSY anomaly, by solving a coupled cohomology problem, and we show that it can be cancelled by subtracting from the action the known Green--Schwarz counterterm, the same which c…
We explore a new way of probing scattering of closed strings in $AdS_5\times S^5$, which we call `the large $p$ limit'. It consists of studying four-point correlators of single-particle operators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM at large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling $λ$, by looking at the regime in which the dual KK modes become short massive strings. In this regime the charge of the single-particle operators is order $λ^{1/4}$ and the dual KK modes are in between fields and strings. Starting from SUGRA we compute the large $p$ limit of the correlators by introducing an improved $AdS_5\times S^5$ Mel…
Tree amplitudes of 10D supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) and 11D supergravity (SUGRA) are collected in multi-particle counterparts of analytic on-shell superfields. These have essentially the same form as their chiral 4D counterparts describing ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and ${\cal N}=8$ SUGRA, but with components dependent on a different set of bosonic variables. These are the D=10 and D=11 spinor helicity variables, the set of which includes the spinor frame variable (Lorentz harmonics) and a scalar density, and generalized homogeneous coordinates of the coset $\frac{SO(D-2)}{SO(D-4)\otimes U(1)}…
We revisit the integration of fields in N=1 Supergravity with the requirement that the effective theory has a reliable two-derivative supersymmetric description. In particular we study, in a supersymmetric manifest way, the situation where the fields that are mapped out have masses comparable to the Supersymmetry breaking scale and masses of the remaining fields. We find that as long as one stands in regions of the field configuration space where the analytic continuation to superspace of the F-flatness conditions be reliable equations of motion for the fields that are being mapped out, and pr…
We study n-point tree amplitudes of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and N=8 supergravity for general configurations of external particles of the two theories. We construct generating functions for n-point MHV and NMHV amplitudes with general external states. Amplitudes derived from them obey SUSY Ward identities, and the generating functions characterize and count amplitudes in the MHV and NMHV sectors. The MHV generating function provides an efficient way to perform the intermediate state helicity sums required to obtain loop amplitudes from trees. The NMHV generating functions rely on the MHV-ve…
We overview symmetries of string scattering amplitudes in the high energy limits of both the fixed angle or Gross regime (GR) and the fixed momentum transfer or Regge regime (RR). We calculated high energy string scattering amplitudes (SSA) at arbitrary mass levels for both regimes. We discovered the infinite linear relations among fixed angle string amplitudes and the infinite recurrence relations among Regge string amplitudes. The linear relations we obtained in the GR corrected the saddle point calculations by Gross, Gross and Mende. In addition, for the high energy closed string scattering…
This article provides an introduction to on-shell recursion relations for calculations of tree-level amplitudes. Starting with the basics, such as spinor notations and color decompositions, we expose analytic properties of gauge-boson amplitudes, BCFW-deformations, the large $z$-behavior of amplitudes, and on-shell recursion relations of gluons. We discuss further developments of on-shell recursion relations, including generalization to other quantum field theories, supersymmetric theories in particular, recursion relations for off-shell currents, recursion relation with nonzero boundary contr…
We review high energy symmetries of string theory at both the fixed angle or Gross regime (GR) and the fixed momentum transfer or Regge regime (RR). We calculated in details high energy string scattering amplitudes at arbitrary mass levels for both regimes. We discovered infinite linear relations among fixed angle string amplitudes conjectured by Gross in 1988 from decoupling of high energy zero-norm states (ZNS), and infinite recurrence relations among Regge string amplitudes from Kummer function U and Appell function F_1. However, the linear relations we obtained in the GR corrected [27-32] …
