We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of ${\rm SL}_3({\mathbb Z})$-equivalence classes of integral ternary cubic forms having bounded invariants. We use this result to show that the average size of the 3-Selmer group of all elliptic curves, when ordered by height, is 4. This implies that the average rank of all elliptic curves, when ordered by height, is less than 1.17.
Combining our counting techniques with a recent result of Dokchitser and Dokchitser, we prove that a positive proportion of all elliptic curves have rank 0. Assuming the finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group, we also show that a positive proportion of elliptic curves have rank 1. Finally, combining our counting results with the recent work of Skinner and Urban, we show that a positive proportion of elliptic curves have analytic rank 0; i.e., a positive proportion of elliptic curves have non-vanishing $L$-function at $s=1$. It follows that a positive proportion of all elliptic curves satisfy BSD.
We parametrize quartic commutative algebras over any base ring or scheme (equivalently finite, flat degree four $S$-schemes), with their cubic resolvents, by pairs of ternary quadratic forms over the base. This generalizes Bhargava's parametrization of quartic rings with their cubic resolvent rings over $\mathbb{Z}$ by pairs of integral ternary quadratic forms, as well as Casnati and Ekedahl's construction of Gorenstein quartic covers by certain rank 2 families of ternary quadratic forms. We give a geometric construction of a quartic algebra from any pair of ternary quadratic forms, and prove …
We show that the proportion of plane cubic curves over ${\mathbb Q}_p$ that have a ${\mathbb Q}_p$-rational point is a rational function in $p$, where the rational function is independent of $p$, and we determine this rational function explicitly. As a consequence, we obtain the density of plane cubic curves over ${\mathbb Q}$ that have points everywhere locally; numerically, this density is shown to be $\approx 97.3\%$.
We show that a positive proportion of cubic fields are not monogenic, despite having no local obstruction to being monogenic. Our proof involves the comparison of $2$-descent and $3$-descent in a certain family of Mordell curves $E_k \colon y^2 = x^3 + k$. As a by-product of our methods, we show that, for every $r \geq 0$, a positive proportion of curves $E_k$ have Tate--Shafarevich group with $3$-rank at least $r$.
When all ternary cubic forms over $\mathbb Z$ are ordered by the heights of their coefficients, we show that a positive proportion of them fail the Hasse principle, i.e., they have a zero over every completion of $\mathbb Q$ but no zero over $\mathbb Q$. We also show that a positive proportion of all ternary cubic forms over $\mathbb Z$ nontrivially satisfy the Hasse principle, i.e., they possess a zero over every completion of $\mathbb Q$ and also possess a zero over $\mathbb Q$. Analogous results are proven for other genus one models, namely, for equations of the form $z^2=f(x,y)$ where $f$ …
We prove that approximately $96.23\%$ of cubic fields, ordered by discriminant, have genus number one, and we compute the exact proportion of cubic fields with a given genus number. We also compute the average genus number. Finally, we show that a positive proportion of totally real cubic fields with genus number one fail to be norm-Euclidean.
In 1987, Zagier and Kramarz published a paper in which they presented evidence that a positive proportion of the even-signed cubic twists of the elliptic curve $x^3+y^3=1$ should have positive rank. We extend their data, showing that it is more likely that the proportion goes to zero.
For any nonzero $h\in\mathbb{Z}$, we prove that a positive proportion of integral binary cubic forms $F$ do locally everywhere represent $h$ but do not globally represent $h$; that is, a positive proportion of cubic Thue equations $F(x,y)=h$ fail the integral Hasse principle. Here, we order all classes of such integral binary cubic forms $F$ by their absolute discriminants. We prove the same result for Thue equations $G(x,y)=h$ of any fixed degree $n \geq 3$, provided that these integral binary $n$-ic forms $G$ are ordered by the maximum of the absolute values of their coefficients.
Can a smooth plane cubic be defined by the determinant of a square matrix with entries in linear forms in three variables? If we can, we say that it admits a linear determinantal representation. In this paper, we investigate linear determinantal representations of smooth plane cubics over various fields, and prove that any smooth plane cubic over a large field (or an ample field) admits a linear determinantal representation. Since local fields are large, any smooth plane cubic over a local field always admits a linear determinantal representation. As an application, we prove that a positive pr…
Haile, Han and Kuo have studied certain non-commutative algebras associated to a binary quartic or ternary cubic form. We extend their construction to pairs of quadratic forms in four variables, and conjecture a further generalisation to genus one curves of arbitrary degree. These constructions give an explicit realisation of an isomorphism relating the Weil-Chatelet and Brauer groups of an elliptic curve.
We prove that there is a positive proportion of $L$-functions associated to cubic characters over $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ that do not vanish at the critical point $s=1/2$. This is achieved by computing the first mollified moment using techniques previously developed by the authors in their work on the first moment of cubic $L$-functions, and by obtaining a sharp upper bound for the second mollified moment, building on work of Lester-Radziwill, which in turn develops further ideas from the work of Soundararajan, Harper, and Radziwill-Soundararajan. We work in the non-Kummer setting when $q \equiv 2\p…
We show that a positive proportion of quartic fields are not monogenic, despite having no local obstruction to being monogenic. Our proof builds on the corresponding result for cubic fields that we obtained in a previous work. Along the way, we also prove that a positive proportion of quartic rings of integers do not arise as the invariant order of an integral binary quartic form despite having no local obstruction.
Extending Gross's result, we prove that a certain factorizaton of measures holds for all $p$ and any finite even Dirichlet character $χ$ of any conductor, rather than only for split $p$ and $χ$ with conductor a power of $p$. Using this generalization, we find lower bounds on the proportion of imaginary quadratic fields $K$ for which (under certain assumptions on the elliptic curve) a chosen quadratic twist of an elliptic curve $E$ over $K$ has rank $1$. We also find lower and upper bounds for the proportion of quadratic twists with rank $1$ when we vary $D$, the factor we twist by, under the a…
