We investigate supercurrent-induced magnetization dynamics in a Josephson junction with two misaligned ferromagnetic layers, and demonstrate a variety of effects by solving numerically the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. In particular, we demonstrate the possibility to obtain supercurrent-induced magnetization switching for an experimentally feasible set of parameters, and clarify the favorable condition for the realization of magnetization reversal. These results constitute a superconducting analogue to conventional current-induced magnetization dynamics and indicate how spin-triplet supercurrents may be utilized for practical purposes in spintronics.
We investigate transverse charge and spin dc supercurrents in a ferromagnet coupled to a superconductor where the ferromagnet has inhomogeneous magnetic structure. These transverse supercurrents arise from non-trivial structure of the magnetization. The magnetic structure manifested in the transverse charge supercurrent is essentially different from that discussed in the context of anomalous Hall effect, reflecting the disspationless nature of supercurrent. Possible candidates of magnetic structure to verify our prediction are also discussed.
Josephson junctions made with conventional s-wave superconductors and containing multiple layers of ferromagnetic materials can carry spin-triplet supercurrent in the presence of certain types of magnetic inhomogeneity. In junctions containing three ferromagnetic layers, the triplet supercurrent is predicted to be maximal when the magnetizations of adjacent layers are orthogonal, and zero when the magnetizations of any two adjacent layers are parallel. Here we demonstrate on-off control of the spin-triplet supercurrent in such junctions, achieved by rotating the magnetization direction of one …
It has been suggested by theoretical works that equal spin-triplet Cooper pairs can be generated in Josephson junctions containing both a ferromagnet and a source of spin-orbit coupling. Our recent experimental work suggested that spin-triplet Cooper pairs were not generated by a Pt spin-orbit coupling layer when the ferromagnetic weak link had entirely in-plane anisotropy (N. Satchell and N.O. Birge, Phys. Rev. B 97, 214509 (2018)). Here, we revisit the experiment using Pt again as a source for spin-orbit coupling and a [Co(0.4 nm)/Ni(0.4 nm)]$_{\times8}$/Co(0.4 nm) ferromagnetic weak link wi…
We have measured spin-triplet supercurrent in Josephson junctions of the form S/F'/F/F'/S, where S is superconducting Nb, F' is a thin Ni layer with in-plane magnetization, and F is a Ni/[Co/Ni]n multilayer with out-of-plane magnetization. The supercurrent in these junctions decays very slowly with F-layer thickness, and is much larger than in similar junctions not containing the two F' layers. Those two features are the characteristic signatures of spin-triplet supercurrent, which is maximized by the orthogonality of the magnetizations in the F and F' layers. Magnetic measurements confirm the…
We present measurements of Josephson junctions containing three magnetic layers with noncolinear magnetizations. The junctions are of the form $S/F^{\prime}/N/F/N/F^{\prime \prime}/S$, where $S$ is superconducting Nb, $F^\prime$ is either a thin Ni or Permalloy layer with in-plane magnetization, $N$ is the normal metal Cu, $F$ is a synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF) with magnetization perpendicular to the plane, composed of Pd/Co multilayers on either side of a thin Ru spacer, and $F^{\prime \prime}$ is a thin Ni layer with in-plane magnetization. The supercurrent in these junctions decays more s…
Based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we investigate the transport of the Josephson current in a S/$f_L$-F$_1$-$f_C$-F$_2$-$f_R$/S junction, where S and F$_{1,2}$ are superconductors and ferromagnets, and $f_{L, C, R}$ are the left, central, and right spin-active interfaces. These interfaces have noncollinear magnetizations, and the azimuthal angles of the magnetizations at the $f_{L, C, R}$ interfaces are $χ_{L, C, R}$. We demonstrate that, if both the ferromagnets have antiparallel magnetizations, the critical current oscillates as a function of the exchange field and the thickness of…
Fine grained polycrystalline samples of MgB(2) superconductor were synthesized from the elements to contain < 5 % of impurity phases, according to X-ray powder diffractometry. The superconductive transition was sharp with a midpoint Tc = 38.5 K. The magnetization in the vortex state was studied as a function of applied field H, temperature T, and time t. From the equilibrium magnetization, the London penetration depth was obtained. The supercurrent density J(T,H,t) in the vortex state (derived from the irreversible magnetization) decreases approximately linearly with T, in contrast to the quas…

Motivated by a recent experiment [J. W. A. Robinson, J. D. S. Witt and M. G. Blamire, Science, \textbf{329}, 5987 (2010)], we here study the possibility of establishing a long-range spin-triplet supercurrent through an inhomogeneous ferromagnetic region consisting of a Ho$\mid$Co$\mid$Ho trilayer sandwiched between two conventional s-wave superconductors. We utilize a full numerical solution in the diffusive regime of transport and study the behavior of the supercurrent for various experimentally relevant configurations of the ferromagnetic trilayer. We obtain qualitatively very good agreement…
The superconducting state of SRO is widely believed to have chiral p-wave order that breaks time reversal symmetry. Such a state is expected to have a spontaneous magnetization, both at sample edges and at domain walls between regions of different chirality. Indeed, muon spin resonance experiments are interpreted as evidence of spontaneous magnetization due to domain walls or defects in the bulk. However, recent magnetic microscopy experiments place upper limits on the magentic fields at the sample edge and surface which are as much as two orders of magnitude smaller than the fields predicted …
We present magnetization measurements of mesoscopic superconducting niobium loops containing a ferromagnetic (PdNi) pi-junction. The loops are prepared on top of the active area of a micro Hall-sensor based on high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. We observe asymmetric switching of the loop between different magnetization states when reversing the sweep direction of the magnetic field. This provides evidence for a spontaneous current induced by the intrinsic phase shift of the pi-junction. In addition, the presence of the spontaneous current near zero applied field is directly revealed b…
We present a theoretical study of the Josephson coupling of two s-wave superconductors which are connected through a diffusive contact consisting of noncollinear ferromagnetic domains. First, we consider a contact with two domains with magnetization vectors misoriented by an angle $θ$. Using the quantum circuit theory, we find that in addition to the charge supercurrent, a spin supercurrent, which is even in $ϕ$ and odd in $θ$, with a spin polarization normal to the magnetization vectors flows between the domains. Furthermore, with asymmetric insulating barriers at the interfaces of the juncti…
The local density of states (LDOS) and its Fourier component induced by a unitary impurity in a supercurrent-carrying d-wave superconductor are investigated. Both of these quantities possess a reflection symmetry about the line passing through the impurity site and along the supercurrent if it is applied along the antinodal or nodal direction. With increasing supercurrent, both the coherence and resonant peaks in the LDOS are suppressed and slightly broadened. Under a supercurrent along the antinodal direction, the coherence peaks split into double peaks. The modulation wavevectors associated …
We show that a supercurrent carried by spinless singlet Cooper pairs can induce a spin accumulation in the normal metal interlayer of a Josephson junction. This phenomenon occurs when a nonequilibrium spin-energy mode is excited in the normal metal, for instance by an applied temperature gradient between ferromagnetic electrodes. Without supercurrent, the spin accumulation vanishes in the Josephson junction. With supercurrent, a spatially antisymmetric spin accumulation is generated that can be measured by tunneling to a polarized detector electrode. We explain the physical origin of the induc…
We report that spin supercurrents can be induced in diffusive SFS Josephson junctions without any magnetic misalignment or intrinsic spin orbit coupling. Instead, the pathway to spin triplet generation is provided via geometric curvature, and results in a long ranged Josephson effect. In addition, the curvature is shown to induce a dynamically tunable $0-π$ transition in the junction. We provide the analytic framework and discuss potential experimental and innovation implications.
In the past year, several groups have observed evidence for long-range spin-triplet supercurrent in Josephson junctions containing ferromagnetic (F) materials. In our work, the spin-triplet pair correlations are created by non-collinear magnetizations between a central Co/Ru/Co "synthetic antiferromagnet" (SAF) and two outer thin F layers. Here we present data showing that the spin-triplet supercurrent is enhanced up to 20 times after our samples are subject to a large in-plane magnetizing field. This surprising result can be explained if the Co/Ru/Co SAF undergoes a "spin-flop" transition, wh…
We study spin-polarized quasiparticle transport in a mesoscopic superconductor with a spin- splitting field in the presence of co-flowing supercurrent. In such a system, the nonequilibrium state is characterized by charge, spin, energy and spin energy modes. Here we show that in the presence of both spin splitting and supercurrent, all these modes are mutually coupled. As a result, the supercurrent can convert charge imbalance, that in the presence of spin splitting decays on a relatively short scale, to a long-range spin accumulation decaying only via inelastic scattering. This effect enables…
We study the dynamics of a magnetic domain wall, inserted in, or juxtaposed to, a conventional superconductor, via the passage of a spin polarized current through a FSF junction. Solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation of motion for the magnetic moments we calculate the velocity of the domain wall and compare it with the case of a FNF junction. We find that in several regimes the domain wall velocity is larger when it is driven by a supercurrent.
By now it is known that in an s-wave superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor ($SFS$) structure the supercurrent induced by spin singlet pairs can only transmit a short distance of the order of magnetic coherence length. The long-range supercurrent, taking place on the length scale of the normal metal coherence length, will be maintained by equal-spin triplet pairs, which can be generated by magnetic inhomogeneities in the system. In this paper, we show an unusual long-range supercurrent, which can take place in clean $SF_1F_2S$ junction with non-parallel orientation of magnetic moments. The …
We predict that long-range triplet correlations (LRTC) in superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) hybrids with extrinsic impurity spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can be generated and manipulated by supercurrent flowing in the superconducting leads along the S/F interfaces. The LRTC appear via two basic mechanisms. The essence of the first one is the generation of triplets by the superconducting spin Hall effect. These pairs are long-range in the ferromagnet under the appropriate mutual orientation of the condensate momentum and the ferromagnet magnetization. The second mechanism is based on the singlet-tri…
We study supercurrent and proximity vortices in a Josephson junction made of disordered surface states of a three-dimensional topological insulator with a proximity induced in-plane helical magnetization. In a regime where the rotation period of helical magnetization is larger than the junction width, we find supercurrent 0-π crossovers as a function of junction thickness, magnetization strength, and parameters inherent to the helical modulation and surface states. The supercurrent reversals are associated with proximity induced vortices, nucleated along the junction width, where the number of…
A useful experimental signature of the ordinary spin Hall effect is the spin accumulation it produces at the sample edges. The superspin Hall current [Phys. Rev. B 96, 094512 (2017)] is a transverse equilibrium spin current which is induced by a charge supercurrent. We study the superspin Hall current numerically, and find that it does not give rise to a similar edge magnetization. We also predict and numerically confirm the existence of the inverse superspin Hall effect, which produces a transverse charge supercurrent in response to an equilibrium spin current. We verify the existence of the …
The low-temperature conductance (G) characteristics between a normal metal and a clean superconductor (S) carrying a supercurrent $I_s$ parallel to the interface is theoretically investigated. Increasing $I_s$ causes lowering and broadening of (1) coherence peaks of s-wave S, and d-wave S at (100) contact, (2) midgap-states-induced zero-bias conductance peak for d-wave S at (110) contact, and (3) Andreev-reflection-induced enhancement of $G$ within the gap near the metallic-contact limit. Novel features found include a current-induced central peak and a three-humped structure at intermediate b…
It has been predicted theoretically that an unconventional odd-frequency spin-triplet component of superconducting order parameter can be induced in multilayered ferromagnetic structures with non-collinear magnetization. In this work we study experimentally nano-scale devices, in which a ferromagnetic spin valve is embedded into a Josephson junction. We demonstrate two ways of in-situ analysis of such Josephson spin valves: via magnetoresistance measurements and via in-situ magnetometry based on flux quantization in the junction. We observe that supercurrent through the device depends on the r…
We consider a Josephson junction with ${\rm F_1 F_2 F_3}$ ferromagnetic trilayers in the ballistic regime, where the magnetization in each ferromagnet ${\rm F}_i (i=1,2,3)$, can have arbitrary orientations and magnetization strengths. The trilayers are sandwiched between two $s$-wave superconductors with a macroscopic phase difference $Δφ$. A broad range of magnetization strengths of the central $\rm F_2$ layer are considered, from an unpolarized normal metal (N) to a half-metallic phase, supporting only one spin species. Our results reveal that when the magnetization configuration in ${\rm F_…
We study the Josephson effect in a triplet superconductor--ferromagnet--singlet superconductor junction. We show that the interaction of tunneling Cooper pairs with the interface magnetization can permit a Josephson current at the lowest order of a tunneling Hamiltonian perturbation theory. Two conditions must be satisfied for this to occur: the magnetization of the ferromagnet has a component parallel to the ${\bf d}$-vector of the triplet superconductor, and the gaps of the superconductors have the same parity with respect to the interface momentum. The resulting charge current displays an u…
We compute self-consistently the Josephson current in a superconductor-antiferromagnet-superconductor junction using a lattice model, focusing on $0-π$ transitions occurring when the width of the antiferromagnetic region changes from an even to an odd number of lattice sites. Previous studies predicted $0-π$ transitions when alternating between an even and an odd number of sites for sufficiently strong antiferromagnetic order. We study numerically the magnitude of the threshold value for this to occur, and also explain the physics behind its existence in terms of the phase-shifts picked up by …
Here, we present a study on Si(111)/\-Ta($150$Å)/\-IrMn($150$Å)/\-NiFe($50$Å)/\-Nb($x$)/\-NiFe($50$Å)/\-Ta($50$Å) and Si(111)/\-Ta($150$Å)/\-NiFe($50$Å)/\-Nb($x$)/\-NiFe($50$Å)/\-IrMn($150$Å)/\-Ta($50$Å) spin-valves with $x=100$ to $500$Å. For both sample families, above a specific critical thickness of the Nb-layer and below $T_c$, the superconducting Nb-layer contributes strongly to the magnetization. These systems show an anomalous hysteresis loop in the magnetization of the superconducting layer; the hysteresis loop is similar to what is generally expected from hard superconductors and man…
The dc transport properties of the (S/M)I(M/S) tunnel structure - proximity coupled superconductor (S) and magnetic (M) layers separated by an insulator (I) - in a parallel magnetic field have been investigated. We choose for the M metal the one in which the effective magnetic interaction, whether it arises from direct exchange interaction or due to configuration mixing, aligns spins of the conducting electrons antiparallel to the localized spins of magnetic ions. For tunnel structures under consideration, we predict that there are the conditions when the destructive action of the internal and…
At the interface between a ferromagnetic insulator and a superconductor there is a coupling between the spins of the two materials. We show that when a supercurrent carried by triplet Cooper pairs flows through the superconductor, the coupling induces a magnon spin current in the adjacent ferromagnetic insulator. The effect is dominated by Cooper pairs polarized in the same direction as the ferromagnetic insulator, so that charge and spin supercurrents produce similar results. Our findings demonstrate a way of converting Cooper pair supercurrents to magnon spin currents.
Cooper pairs in superconductors are normally spin singlet. Nevertheless, recent studies suggest that spin-triplet Cooper pairs can be created at carefully engineered superconductor-ferromagnet interfaces. If Cooper pairs are spin-polarized they would transport not only charge but also a net spin component, but without dissipation, and therefore minimize the heating effects associated with spintronic devices. Although it is now established that triplet supercurrents exist, their most interesting property - spin - is only inferred indirectly from transport measurements. In conventional spintroni…
Using tunneling spectroscopy, we have measured the local electron energy distribution function in the normal part of a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction containing an extra lead to a normal reservoir. In the presence of simultaneous supercurrent and injected quasiparticle current, the distribution function exhibits a sharp feature at very low energy. The feature is odd in energy, and odd under reversal of either the supercurrent or the quasiparticle current direction. The feature represents an effective temperature gradient across the SNS Josephson junction th…
Josephson junctions containing three ferromagnetic layers with non-collinear magnetizations between adjacent layers carry spin-triplet supercurrent under certain conditions. The signature of the spin-triplet supercurrent is a relatively slow decay of the maximum supercurrent as a function of the thickness of the middle ferromagnetic layer. In this work we focus on junctions where the middle magnetic layer is a [Co/Pd]$_N$ multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), while the outer two layers have in-plane anisotropy. We compare junctions where the middle PMA layer is or is not con…
A nonuniform in-plane Zeeman field can induce spontaneous supercurrents of spin-orbit coupled electrons in superconducting two-dimensional systems and thin films. In this work it is shown that current vortices can be created at the ends of a long homogeneously magnetized strip of a ferromagnetic insulator, which is deposited on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. The s-wave superconductivity on its surface is assumed to have an intrinsic origin, or to be induced by the proximity effect. It is shown that vortices with the odd vorticity can localize Majorana zero modes. The …
We examine the thermopower Q of a mesoscopic normal-metal (N) wire in contact to superconducting (S) segments and show that even with electron-hole symmetry, Q may become finite due to the presence of supercurrents. Moreover, we show how the dominant part of Q can be directly related to the equilibrium supercurrents in the structure. In general, a finite thermopower appears both between the N reservoirs and the superconductors, and between the N reservoirs themselves. The latter, however, strongly depends on the geometrical symmetry of the structure.
The local nonequilibrium quasiparticle distribution function in a normal-metal wire depends on the applied voltage over the wire and the type and strength of different scattering mechanisms. We show that in a setup with superconducting reservoirs, in which the supercurrent and the dissipative current flow (anti)parallel, the distribution function can also be tuned by applying a supercurrent between the contacts. Unlike the usual control by voltage or temperature, this leads to a Peltier-like effect: the supercurrent converts an externally applied voltage into a difference in the effective temp…
We theoretically calculate the charge-supercurrent through a ballistic graphene junction where superconductivity is induced via the proximity-effect. Both monolayer and bilayer graphene are considered, including the possibility of strain in the systems. We demonstrate that the supercurrent at the charge neutrality point can be tuned efficiently by means of mechanical strain. Remarkably, the supercurrent is enhanced or suppressed relative to the non-strained case depending on the direction of this strain. We also calculate the Fano factor in the normal-state of the system and show how its behav…
It is now well established that a Josephson junction made from conventional spin-singlet superconductors containing ferromagnetic layers can carry spin-triplet supercurrent under certain conditions. The first experimental signature of that fact is the propagation of such supercurrent over long distances through strong ferromagnetic materials. Surprisingly, one of the most salient predictions of the theory has yet to be verified experimentally -- namely that a Josephson junction containing three magnetic layers with coplanar magnetizations should exhibit a ground-state phase shift of either zer…
Employing a spin-parameterized Kleldysh-Usadel technique for the diffusive regime, we demonstrate that even in the low proximity limit, considerable long-ranged triplet supercurrents can be effectively generated by spin-singlet supercurrents flowing \textit{parallel} to the interfaces of uniform double ferromagnet interlayers with noncollinear exchange fields "{\it independent}" of actual junction geometry. The triplet supercurrents are found to be most pronounced when the thicknesses of the ferromagnet strips are unequal. To experimentally verify this generic phenomenon, we propose an accessi…
The optical conductivity encodes the current response to a time dependent electric field. We develop a theory of the optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ in presence of a dc supercurrent. Current induced optical response is prohibited by Galilean invariance from occurring in systems with a single parabolic band. However, we show that lattice effects give rise to a pronounced current dependent peak in $σ(ω)$ at the gap edge $ω= 2 Δ$, which diverges in the clean limit. We demonstrate this in a model of a multi-band superconductor. Our theory explains the recent observation of a current induced peak in th…
We study the tunneling of Bogoliubov excitations through a barrier in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We extend our previous work [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{78}, 013628 (2008)] to the case when condensate densities are different between the left and right of the barrier potential. In the framework of the Bogoliubov mean-field theory, we calculate the transmission probability and phase shift, as well as the energy flux and quasiparticle current carried by Bogoliubov excitations. We find that Bogoliubov phonons twist the condensate phase due to a back-reaction effect, which induces the Josephson supercur…
We demonstrate enhanced robustness of the supercurrent through graphene-based Josephson junctions in which strong spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) are induced. We compare the persistence of a supercurrent at high magnetic fields between Josephson junctions with graphene on hexagonal boron-nitride and graphene on WS$_2$, where strong SOIs are induced via the proximity effect. We find that in the shortest junctions both systems display signatures of induced superconductivity, characterized by a suppressed differential resistance at a low current, in magnetic fields up to 1 T. In longer junctions h…
We develop theory models for both ballistic and disordered superconducting monolayer black phosphorus devices in the presence of magnetic exchange field and strain. The ballistic case is studied through a microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism while for the disordered case we formulate a quasiclassical model. Utilizing the two models, we theoretically study the response of supercurrent to an externally applied magnetic field in two-dimensional black phosphorus Josephson junctions. Our results demonstrate that the response of the supercurrent to a perpendicular magnetic field in ballistic s…
Materials with transition metals in triangular lattices are of great interest for their potential combination of strong correlation, exotic magnetism and electronic topology. Kagome nets are of particular importance since the discovery of geometrically frustrated magnetism and topological band structures in crystals like Herbertsmithite and Fe3Sn2, respectively. KV3Sb5 was discovered to be a layered topological metal with a Kagome net of vanadium. Here, we fabricated Josephson Junctions (JJ) of K1-xV3Sb5 and induced superconductivity over long junction lengths. Through magnetoresistance and cu…
We show that the two-band nature of noncentrosymmetric superconductors leads naturally to an anomalous Josephson current appearing at zero phase difference in a clean noncentrosymmetric superconductor/ferromagnet/noncentrosymmetric superconductor junction. The two-band nature provides two sets of Andreev bound states which carry two supercurrents with different amplitudes. When the magnetization direction of the ferromagnet is suitably chosen, two supercurrents experience opposite phase shifts from the conventional sinusoidal current-phase relation. Then the total Josephson current results in …

Superconductivity in topological materials has attracted a great deal of interest in both electron physics and material sciences since the theoretical predictions that Majorana fermions can be realized in topological superconductors [1-4]. Topological superconductivity could be realized in a type II, band-inverted, InAs/GaSb quantum well if it is in proximity to a conventional superconductor. Here we report observations of the proximity effect induced giant supercurrent states in an InAs/GaSb bilayer system that is sandwiched between two superconducting tantalum electrodes to form a supercondu…
A theory of the IR-field-induced single-photon generation by the narrow thin-film superconducting rings made of the isotropic s-wave pairing type-II superconductors is presented. It is shown that statistical measurements of the energies of photons emitted by the same current-carrying ring prepared initially in the same quantum state, allow to find the number distribution of Cooper pairs in the superconductor.
