The doping and temperature dependent thermopower of SnTe is calculated from the first principles band structure using Boltzmann transport theory. We find that the $p$-type thermopower is inferior to PbTe consistent with experimental observations, but that the $n$-type thermopower is substantially more favorable.
Band engineering is an important mechanism to increase the thermopower of thermoelectric materials by reconstructing the band structure near Fermi level. PbTe and SnTe are the most representative systems in which band engineering were achieved by various dopants. Starting with the elementary understanding of the band structures, we established the phase diagram for the band engineering in p-type PbTe/SnTe by constructing an s-p bonding model. We show that the effects of band tuning are mainly determined by an inherent parameter of doping element: the s orbital energy level. With the phase diag…
Thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline p-type ZrTe5 are reported in temperature (T) range 2 - 340 K. Thermoelectric power (S) is positive and reaches up to 458 uV/K at 340 K on increasing T. The value of Fermi energy 16 meV, suggests low carrier density of ~ 9.5 X 10^18 cm-3. A sharp anomaly in S data is observed at 38 K, which seems intrinsic to p-type ZrTe5. The thermal conductivity value is low (2 W/m-K at T = 300 K) with major contribution from lattice part. Electrical resistivity data shows metal to semiconductor transition at T ~ 150 K and non-Arrhenius behavior in the semiconducti…
Based on first-principles calculations, we study the origin of the large thermopower in Ni-doped LaRhO3 and Mg-doped CuRhO2. We calculate the band structure and construct the maximally localized Wannier functions from which a tight binding Hamiltonian is obtained. The Seebeck coefficient is calculated within the Boltzmann's equation approach using this effective Hamiltonian. For LaRhO3, we find that the Seebeck coefficient remains nearly constant within a large hole concentration range, which is consistent with the experimental observation. For CuRhO2, the overall temperature dependence of the…
We present a combined treatment of the non-equilibrium dynamics and transport of electrons and phonons by carrying out \textit{ab initio} calculations of the fully coupled electron and phonon Boltzmann transport equations. We find that the presence of mutual drag between the two carriers causes the thermopower to be enhanced and dominated by the transport of phonons, rather than electrons as in the traditional semiconductor picture. Drag also strongly boosts the intrinsic electron mobility, thermal conductivity and the Lorenz number. Impurity scattering is seen to suppress the drag-enhancement…
We study the origin of the large thermopower in quasi-two-dimensional a $τ$-type organic conductor, $τ-(EDO-S,S-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuBr_2)_{1+y}$ ($y \le 0.875$), from the view point of a "pudding mold"-type band structure. We calculate the electronic band structure using an \textit{ab initio} band calculation package, and obtain a tight binding model fit to the \textit{ab initio} band structure. Using the model and the Boltzmann's equation approach, we calculate the temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient. We conclude that the peculiar band structure is the origin of the large Seebeck coe…
We present an analysis of the thermoelectric properties of of $n$-type GeTe and SnTe in relation to the lead chalcogenides PbTe and PbSe. We find that the singly degenerate conduction bands of semiconducting GeTe and SnTe are highly non-ellipsoidal, even very close to the band edges. This leads to isoenergy surfaces with a strongly corrugated shape that is clearly evident at carrier concentrations well below 0.005 $e$ per formula unit (7 - 9 $\times$ 10$^{19}$cm$^{-3}$ depending on material) Analysis within Boltzmann theory suggests that this corrugation may be favorable for the thermoelectric…
We present a theoretical study of the influence of the relativistic effects on electronic band structure and thermopower of Mg2X(X= Si, Ge, Sn) semiconductors. The full potential Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) method is used, and the detailed comparison between the fully relativistic and semi-relativistic electronic structure features is done. We show that the spin-orbit (S-O) interaction splits the valence band structure at Gamma point in good agreement with the experimental data, and this effect strongly depends on X atom. The S-O modifications of the topology of the Gamma-centered hole-like F…
The thermoelectric properties of single- and polycrystalline FeGa3 are systematically investigated over a wide temperature range. At low temperatures, below 20 K, previously not known pronounced peaks in the thermal conductivity (400-800 W K^-1m-1) with corresponding maxima in the thermopower (in the order of -16000 microV/K) were found in single crystalline samples. Measurements in single crystals along [100] and [001] directions indicate only a slight anisotropy in both the electrical and thermal transport. From susceptibility and heat capacity measurements, a structural or magnetic phase tr…
We present here the thermoelectric properties of olivine-type Fe2GeCh4 (Ch = S, Se and Te) using the linear augmented plane wave method based on first principles density functional calculations. The calculated transport properties using the semi-local Boltzmann transport equation reveal very high thermopower for both S and Se-based compounds compared to their Te counterparts. The main reason for this high thermopower is the quasi-flat nature of the bands at the valence and conduction band edges. The calculated thermopower of Fe2GeCh4 is in good agreement with the experimental reports at room t…
Berry curvature acts analogous to a magnetic field in the momentum-space, and it modifies the flow of charge carriers and entropy. This induces several intriguing magnetoelectric and magnetothermal transport phenomena in Weyl semimetals. %, including the planar Hall and planar Nernst effect. Here, we explore the impact of the Berry curvature and orbital magnetization on the thermopower in tilted type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals, using semiclassical Boltzmann transport formalism. We analytically calculate the full magnetoconductivity matrix and use it to obtain the thermopower matrix for diff…
On the basis of detailed first-principles calculations and semi-classical Boltzmann transport, the anisotropic thermoelectric transport properties of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Sb$_2$Te$_3$ under strain were investigated. It was found that due to compensation effects of the strain dependent thermopower and electrical conductivity, the related powerfactor will decrease under applied in-plane strain for Bi$_2$Te$_3, while being stable for Sb$_2$Te$_3$. A clear preference for thermoelectric transport under hole-doping, as well as for the in-plane transport direction was found for both tellurides. In contra…
Interest in the application of thermoelectric devices for renewable energy has risen over the past decade. In this paper, we calculate the transport properties of various configurations of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) MSe$_2$ (M = Hf, Zr, Ti) in search of promising thermoelectric materials at low/high temperatures. We explore the properties of the pure monolayer at discrete levels of biaxial tensile strain (epsilon = 0%, 2%, 4%, 8%), as well as those of the van der Waals heterobilayers MSe$_2$/MSe$_2$ using first-principles calculations combined with semi-classical Boltzmann trans…
We analyze the cross-plane miniband transport in n-doped [001] silicon (Si)/germanium (Ge) superlattices using an effective mass approximation (EMA) approach that correctly accounts for the indirect nature of the Si and Ge band gaps. Direct-gap based EMA has been employed so far to investigate the electronic properties of these superlattices, that does not accurately predict transport properties. We use the Boltzmann transport equation framework in combination with the EMA band analysis, and predict that significant improvement of the thermopower of n-doped Si/Ge superlattices can be achieved …
The electronic structure and magnetic properties of FeGa3 and doped FeGa3 are studied using density functional calculations. An itinerant mechanism for ferromagnetism is found both for n-type doping with Ge and also for p-type doping. Boltzmann transport calculations of the thermopower are also reported.
Recently, we reported [M. Wagner et al., J. Mater. Res. 26, 1886 (2011)] transport measurements on the semiconducting intermetallic system RuIn3 and its substitution derivatives RuIn_{3-x}A_{x} (A = Sn, Zn). Higher values of the thermoelectric figure of merit (zT = 0.45) compared to the parent compound were achieved by chemical substitution. Here, using density functional theory based calculations, we report on the microscopic picture behind the measured phenomenon. We show in detail that the electronic structure of the substitution variants of the intermetallic system RuIn_{3-x}A_{x} (A = Sn,…
Electronic structure calculations using the augmented spherical wave method have been performed for CuRhO2. For this semiconductor crystallizing in the delafossite structure, it is found that the valence band maximum is mainly due to the 4d t2g orbitals of Rh^{3+}. The structural characterizations of CuRh(1-x)MgxO2 show a broad range of Mg^{2+} substitution for Rh^{3+} in this series, up to about 12%. Measurements of the resistivity and thermopower of the doped systems show a Fermi liquid-like behavior for temperatures up to about 1000K, resulting in a large weakly temperature dependent power …
The layered misfit cobaltate Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$, also known as Ca$_2$CoO$_3$[CoO$_2$]$_{1.62}$, is a promising p-type thermoelectric oxide. Employing density functional theory, we study its electronic structure and determine, on the basis of Boltzmann theory within the constant-relaxation-time approximation, the thermoelectric transport coefficients. The dependence on strain and temperature is determined. In particular, we find that the $xx$-component of the thermopower is strongly enhanced, while the $yy$-component is strongly reduced, when applying 2% tensile strain. A similar anisotropy is a…
Electronic and transport properties of CuGaTe$_2$, a hole-doped ternary copper based chalcopyrite type semiconductor, are studied using calculations within the Density Functional Theory and solving the Boltzmann transport equation within the constant relaxation time approximation. The electronic bandstructures are calculated by means of the full-potential linear augmented plane wave method, using the Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson potential. The calculated band gap of 1.23 eV is in agreement with the experimental value of 1.2 eV. The carrier concentration- and temperature dependent thermoel…
We present results of electronic band structure, Fermi surface and electron transport properties calculations in orthorhombic $n$- and $p$-type SnSe, applying Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method and Boltzmann transport approach. The analysis accounted for temperature effect on crystallographic parameters in $Pnma$ structure as well as the phase transition to $CmCm$ structure at $T_c\sim 807 $K. Remarkable modifications of conduction and valence bands were notified upon varying crystallographic parameters within the structure before $T_c$, while the phase transition mostly leads to jump in the band g…
In the present work, we report the experimental thermopower ($α$) data for ZnV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ compound in the high temperature range 300-600 K. The value of $α$ is found to be $\sim$184 and $\sim$126 $μ$V/K at $\sim$300 and $\sim$600 K, respectively. The temperature dependent behavior of $α$ is almost linear in the measured temperature range. To understand the large and positive $α$ value observed in this compound, we have also investigated the electronic and thermoelectric properties by combining the \textit{ab-initio} electronic structures calculations with Boltzmann transport theory. Within t…
