We present a multi-wavelength analysis of the merging rich cluster of galaxies Abell 2256. We have observed A2256 at 150 MHz using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and successfully detected the diffuse radio halo and the relic emission over an extent $\sim1.2$ Mpc$^2$. Using this 150 MHz image and the images made using archival observations from the VLA (1369 MHz) and the WSRT (350 MHz), we have produced spectral index images of the diffuse radio emission in A2256. These spectral index images show a distribution of flat spectral index (S$\proptoν^α$, $α$ in the range -0.7 to -0.9) plasma in the NW of the cluster centre. Regions showing steep spectral indices ($α$ in the range -1.0 to -2.3) are toward the SE of the cluster centre. These spectral indices indicate synchrotron life times for the relativistic plasmas in the range 0.08 - 0.4 Gyr. We interpret this spectral behaviour as resulting from a merger event along the direction SE to NW within the last 0.5 Gyr or so. A shock may be responsible for the NW relic in A2256 and the Mpc scale radio halo towards the SE is likely to be generated by the turbulence injected by mergers. Furthermore, the diffuse radio emission shows spectral steepening toward lower frequencies. This low frequency spectral steepening is consistent with a combination of spectra from two populations of relativistic electrons created at two epochs (two mergers) within the last $\sim$0.5 Gyr. Earlier interpretations of the X-ray and the optical data also suggested that there were two mergers in Abell 2256 in the last 0.5 Gyr, consistent with the current findings. Also highlighted in this study is the futility of correlating the average temperatures of thermal gas and the average spectral indices of diffuse radio emission in respective clusters.
In this paper we present new high sensitivity 153 MHz Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope follow-up observations of the diffuse steep spectrum cluster radio sources in the galaxy clusters Abell 521, Abell 697, Abell 1682. Abell 521 hosts a relic, and together with Abell 697 it also hosts a giant very steep spectrum radio halo. Abell 1682 is a more complex system with candidate steep spectrum diffuse emission. We imaged the diffuse radio emission in these clusters at 153 MHz, and provided flux density measurements of all the sources at this frequency. Our new flux density measurements, coupled with…

We identify four rare "jellyfish" galaxies in Hubble Space Telescope imagery of the major merger cluster Abell 2744. These galaxies harbor trails of star-forming knots and filaments which have formed in-situ in gas tails stripped from the parent galaxies, indicating they are in the process of being transformed by the environment. Further evidence for rapid transformation in these galaxies comes from their optical spectra, which reveal starburst, poststarburst and AGN features. Most intriguingly, three of the jellyfish galaxies lie near ICM features associated with a merging "Bullet-like" subcl…
Abell 2146 ($z$ = 0.232) consists of two galaxy clusters undergoing a major merger. The system was discovered in previous work, where two large shock fronts were detected using the $\textit{Chandra X-ray Observatory}$, consistent with a merger close to the plane of the sky, caught soon after first core passage. A weak gravitational lensing analysis of the total gravitating mass in the system, using the distorted shapes of distant galaxies seen with ACS-WFC on $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$, is presented. The highest peak in the reconstruction of the projected mass is centred on the Brightes…
In large scale structure formation, massive systems assemble through the hierarchical merging of less massive ones. Galaxy clusters, being the most massive and thus the most recent collapsed structures, still grow by accreting smaller clusters and groups. In order to investigate the dynamical evolution of the intracluster medium, we perform a set of adiabatic hydrodynamical simulations of binary cluster mergers.
We present evidence for the existence of substructure in the "relaxed appearing" cold front clusters Abell 2142 and RXJ1720.1+2638. The detection of these substructures was made possible by comprehensive multi-object optical spectroscopy obtained with the Hectospec and DEep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph instruments on the 6.5m MMT and 10m Keck II telescope, respectively. These observations produced 956 and 400 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members within a projected radius of 3Mpc from the centers of Abell 2142 and RXJ1720.1+2638, respectively. The substructure manifests itself as lo…
Context: Hierarchical galaxy formation models indicate that during their lifetime galaxy clusters undergo several mergers. Here we report on the discovery of three diffuse radio sources in the periphery of Abell 2256, using the GMRT. Aims: The aim of the observations was to search for diffuse ultra-steep spectrum radio sources within the galaxy cluster Abell 2256. Methods: We have carried out GMRT 325 MHz radio continuum observations of Abell 2256. V, R and I band images of the cluster were taken with the 4.2m WHT. Results: We have discovered three diffuse elongated radio sources located about…
We investigate the origin and nature of the multiple sloshing cold fronts in the core of Abell 496 by direct comparison between observations and dedicated hydrodynamical simulations. Our simulations model a minor merger with a 4{\times}10^13M{\circ} subcluster crossing A496 from the south-west to the north-north-east, passing the cluster core in the south-east at a pericentre distance 100 to a few 100 kpc about 0.6 to 0.8 Gyr ago. The gas sloshing triggered by the merger can reproduce almost all observed features, e.g. the characteristic spiral-like brightness residual distribution in the clus…
We present a new 400ks Chandra X-ray observation and a GMRT radio observation at 325MHz of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 2146. The Chandra observation reveals detailed structure associated with the major merger event including the Mach M=2.1+/-0.2 bow shock located ahead of the dense subcluster core and the first known example of an upstream shock (M=1.6+/-0.1). Surprisingly, the deep GMRT observation at 325MHz does not detect any extended radio emission associated with either shock front. All other merging galaxy clusters with X-ray detected shock fronts, including the Bullet cluster, Abel…
We present a new Chandra X-ray observation of the intracluster medium in the galaxy cluster Abell 2443, hosting an ultra-steep spectrum radio source. The data reveal that the intracluster medium is highly disturbed. The thermal gas in the core is elongated along a northwest to southeast axis and there is a cool tail to the north. We also detect two X-ray surface brightness edges near the cluster core. The edges appear to be consistent with an inner cold front to the northeast of the core and an outer shock front to the southeast of the core. The southeastern edge is coincident with the locatio…
We have investigated the post-merger signatures of red-sequence galaxies in rich Abell clusters at $z \lesssim$ 0.1: A119, A2670, A3330 and A389. Deep images in u', g', r' and medium-resolution galaxy spectra were taken using MOSAIC 2 CCD and Hydra MOS mounted on a Blanco 4-m telescope at CTIO. Post-merger features are identified by visual inspection based on asymmetric disturbed features, faint structures, discontinuous halo structures, rings and dust lanes. We found that ~ 25% of bright (M_r < -20) cluster red-sequence galaxies show post-merger signatures in four clusters consistently. Most …
We present a low frequency study of the diffuse radio emission in the galaxy cluster A754. We present new 150 MHz image of the galaxy cluster A754 made with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and discuss the detection of 4 diffuse features. We compare the 150 MHz image with the images at 74, 330 and 1363 MHz; one new diffuse feature is detected. The flux density upperlimits at 330 and 1363 MHz imply a synchrotron spectral index, $α> 2$, ($S\propto ν^{-α}$) for the new feature. The 'west relic' detected at 74 MHz (Kassim et al 2001) is not detected at 150 MHz and is thus consistent with…
We present VLA radio and Chandra X-ray observations of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 3411. For the cluster, we find an overall temperature of 6.4 keV and an X-ray luminosity of 2.8 x 10^{44} erg s^{-1} between 0.5 and 2.0 keV. The Chandra observation reveals the cluster to be undergoing a merger event. The VLA observations show the presence of large-scale diffuse emission in the central region of the cluster, which we classify as a 0.9 Mpc size radio halo. In addition, a complex region of diffuse, polarized emission is found in the southeastern outskirts of the cluster, along the projected …
We seek to explore the internal dynamics of the cluster Abell 1758N, which has been shown to host a radio halo and two relics, and is known to be a merging bimodal cluster. Our analysis is mainly based on new redshift data for 137 galaxies acquired at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, only four of which have redshifts previously listed in the literature. We also used photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope archive. We combined galaxy velocities and positions to select 92 cluster galaxies and analyzed the internal cluster dynamics. We estim…
This paper presents a sample of "cold front" clusters selected from the Chandra archive. The clusters are selected based purely on the existence of surface brightness edges in their Chandra images which are modeled as density jumps. A combination of the derived density and temperature jumps across the fronts is used to select nine robust examples of cold front clusters: 1ES0657-558, Abell 1201, Abell 1758N, MS1455.0+2232, Abell 2069, Abell 2142, Abell 2163, RXJ1720.1+2638, and Abell 3667. This sample is the subject of an ongoing study aimed at relating cold fronts to cluster merger activity, a…
We present an analysis of the structures and dynamics of the merging cluster Abell~1201, which has two sloshing cold fronts around a cooling core, and an offset gas core approximately 500kpc northwest of the center. New Chandra and XMM-Newton data reveal a region of enhanced brightness east of the offset core, with breaks in surface brightness along its boundary to the north and east. This is interpreted as a tail of gas stripped from the offset core. Gas in the offset core and the tail is distinguished from other gas at the same distance from the cluster center chiefly by having higher densit…
New Chandra X-ray data and extensive optical spectroscopy, obtained with AAOmega on the 3.9 m Anglo-Australian Telescope, are used to study the complex merger taking place in the galaxy cluster Abell 2744. Combining our spectra with data from the literature provides a catalog of 1237 redshifts for extragalactic objects lying within 15' of the cluster center. From these, we confirm 343 cluster members projected within 3 Mpc of the cluster center. Combining positions and velocities, we identify two major substructures, corresponding to the remnants of two major subclusters. The new data are cons…
Galaxy clusters with signs for a recent merger show in many cases extended diffuse radio features. This emission originates from relativistic electrons which suffer synchrotron losses due to the intra-cluster magnetic field. The mechanisms of the particle acceleration and the properties of the magnetic field are still poorly understood. We search for diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters. Here, we study the complex galaxy cluster Abell 2069, for which X-ray observations indicate a recent merger. We investigate the cluster's radio continuum emission by deep Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telesc…
We present a Chandra X-ray observation and VLA radio observations of the nearby (z=0.11) galaxy cluster Abell 562 and the wide angle tail (WAT) radio source 0647+693. The cluster displays signatures of an ongoing merger leading to the bending of the WAT source including an elongation of the X-ray surface brightness distribution along the line that bisects the WAT, an excess of displaced gas found between the radio lobes, and anisotropies within the ICM projected temperature and abundance distributions. The most likely geometry of the ongoing interaction is a head-on merger occurring along the …
We report on the detection of diffuse radio emission in the X-ray luminous and massive galaxy cluster A1351 (z=0.322) using archival Very Large Array data at 1.4 GHz. Given its central location, morphology, and Mpc-scale extent, we classify the diffuse source as a giant radio halo. X-ray and weak lensing studies show A1351 to be a system undergoing a major merger. The halo is associated with the most massive substructure. The presence of this source is explained assuming that merger-driven turbulence may re-accelerate high-energy particles in the intracluster medium and generate diffuse radio …
We explore the internal dynamics of Abell 2254, which has been shown to host a very clumpy and irregular radio halo. Our analysis is mainly based on redshift data for 128 galaxies acquired at the TNG. We also use new g',r',i' photometric data acquired at the INT and (V,i') photometric data available in the Subaru Archive. X-ray data from the XMM-Newton Science Archive are analyzed to study the hot gas component. We estimate the cluster redshift <z>=0.177, a high line-of-sight (LOS) velocity dispersion, sigmaV about 1350 km/s, and X-ray temperature T about 6.4 keV. Both our optical and X-ray an…
We present new Chandra observations of Abell 2199 that show evidence of gas sloshing due to a minor merger, as well as impacts of the radio source, 3C 338, hosted by the central galaxy, NGC 6166, on the intracluster gas. The new data are consistent with previous evidence of a Mach 1.46 shock 100" from the cluster center, although there is still no convincing evidence for the expected temperature jump. Other interpretations of this feature are possible, but none is fully satisfactory. Large scale asymmetries, including enhanced X-ray emission 200" southwest of the cluster center and a plume of …
Radio halos are faint radio sources usually located at the center of merging clusters of galaxies. These diffuse radio sources are rare, having so far been found only in about 30 clusters of galaxies, suggesting that particular conditions are needed to form and maintain them. It is interesting to investigate the presence of radio halos in close pairs of interacting clusters in order to possibly clarify their origin in relation to the evolutionary state of the merger. In this work, we study the case of the close pair of galaxy clusters A399 and A401. A401 is already known to contain a faint rad…
Deep radio observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 781 have been carried out using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 325 MHz and have been compared to previous 610 MHz observations and to archival VLA 1.4 GHz data. The radio emission from the cluster is dominated by a diffuse source located at the outskirts of the X-ray emission, which we tentatively classify as a radio relic. We detected residual diffuse emission at the cluster centre at the level of S(325 MHz)~15-20 mJy. Our analysis disagrees with Govoni et al. (2011), and on the basis of simple spectral considerations we do not suppo…
Major mergers between massive clusters have a profound effect in the intracluster gas, which may be used as a probe of the dynamics of structure formation at the high end of the mass function. An example of such a merger is observed at the northern component of Abell 1758, comprised of two massive sub-clusters separated by approximately 750 kpc. One of the clusters exhibits an offset between the dark matter and the intracluster gas. We aim to determine whether it is possible to reproduce the specific morphological features of this cluster by means of a major merger. We perform dedicated SPH (s…
We present the first deep low frequency radio observations of the massive and highly disturbed galaxy cluster Abell 2744 using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). The cluster is experiencing a very complex multiple merger and hosts a giant halo and four radio relics. The uGMRT observations, together with existing VLA and Chandra observations, allow us to study the complexity of the physical mechanisms active in this system. Our new images reveal that the central halo emission is more extended toward low frequencies. We find that the integrated spectrum of the halo follows a p…
Abell 1995 is a puzzling galaxy cluster hosting a powerful radio halo, but it has not yet been recognized as a obvious cluster merger, as usually expected for clusters with diffuse radio emission. We aim at an exhaustive analysis of the internal structure of Abell 1995 to verify if this cluster is really dynamically relaxed, as reported in previous studies. We base our analysis on new and archival spectroscopic and photometric data for 126 galaxies in the field of Abell 1995. The study of the hot intracluster medium was performed on X-ray archival data. Based on 87 fiducial cluster members, we…
During their lifetime, galaxy clusters grow through the accretion of matter from the filaments of the large scale structure and from mergers with other clusters. These mergers release a large amount of energy into the intracluster medium (ICM) through merger shocks and turbulence. These phenomena are associated with the formation of radio sources known as radio relics and radio halos, respectively. Radio relics and halos are unique proxies to study the complex properties of these dynamically active regions of clusters and in general the micro physics of the ICM. Abell 3667 is a spectacular exa…
We present the XMM-Newton X-ray analysis of RXJ1720.1+2638 and Abell267, a non-fossil and a fossil system, respectively. The whole spectrum of both objects can be explained by thermal emission. The luminosities found for RXJ1720.1+2638 and Abell267 in the 2-10 keV band are 6.20^{+0.04}_{-0.02}\times10^{44} and 3.90^{+0.10}_{-0.11}\times10^{44} cgs, respectively. The radial profiles show a cool core nature for the non-fossil system RXJ1720.1+2638, while Abell267 shows a constant behaviour of temperature with radius. Metallicity profiles have also been produced, but no evidence of any gradient w…
The largest galaxy clusters are observed still to be forming through major cluster-cluster mergers, often showing observational signatures such as radio relics and giant radio haloes. Using LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey data, we present new detections of both a radio halo (with a spectral index of $α_{143}^{1400}=1.48^{+0.06}_{-0.23}$) and a likely radio relic in Abell 959, a massive cluster at a redshift of z=0.288. Using a sample of clusters with giant radio haloes from the literature (80 in total), we show that the radio halo in A959 lies reasonably well on the scaling relations between the th…
Abell 754 is a rich galaxy cluster at $z=0.0543$ and is considered the prototype of a major cluster merger. Like many dynamically unrelaxed systems, it hosts diffuse radio emission on Mpc-scales. Extended synchrotron sources in the intra-cluster medium (ICM) are commonly interpreted as evidence that a fraction of the gravitational energy released during cluster mergers is dissipated into nonthermal components. Here, we use new MeerKAT UHF- and L-band observations to study nonthermal phenomena in Abell 754. These data are complemented with archival XMM-Newton observations to investigate the res…
A combination of $BRI$ photometry and archival Chandra X-ray data have been used to analyse the effects a minor merger has on the galaxy population of A1664. We utilise adaptive smoothing techniques in the 2D spatial distribution of cluster galaxies to reveal substructure $\sim$ 800 kpc South of the cluster core. We identify this substructure as most likely the remnant core of a merging group which has passed pericentre and responsible for triggering a cold front in the cluster core. We define two samples to represent two different environments within A1664 in accordance with the location of t…
Galaxy cluster mergers are a powerful laboratory for testing cosmological and astrophysical models. However, interpreting individual merging clusters depends crucially on their merger configuration, defined by the masses, velocities, impact parameters, and orientation of the merger axis with respect to the plane of the sky. In this work, we investigate the impact of merger parameters on the X-ray emitting intracluster medium and gravitational lensing maps using a suite of idealised simulations of binary cluster mergers performed using the GAMER-2 code. As a test case, we focus on modeling the …
We aim to obtain new insights into the internal dynamics of the cluster Abell 1240, showing the presence of two roughly symmetric radio relics, separated by ~2 h_70^-1 Mpc. Our analysis is mainly based on redshift data for 145 galaxies and on new photometric data. We also use X-ray data from the Chandra archive and photometric data from the SDSS (DR7). We combine galaxy velocities and positions to select 89 cluster galaxies and analyze the internal dynamics of the Abell 1237 + Abell 1240 cluster complex. We estimate similar redshifts for Abell 1237 and Abell 1240, <z>=0.1935 and <z>=0.1948, re…

The galaxy cluster Abell 523 (A523) hosts an extended diffuse synchrotron source historically classified as a radio halo. Its radio power at 1.4 GHz makes it one of the most significant outliers in the scaling relations between observables derived from multi-wavelength observations of galaxy clusters: it has a morphology that is different and offset from the thermal gas, and it has polarized emission at 1.4 GHz typically difficult to observe for this class of sources. A magnetic field fluctuating on large spatial scales (~ 1 Mpc) can explain these peculiarities but the formation mechanism for …
Located at z = 0.203, A2163 is a rich galaxy cluster with an intra-cluster medium (ICM) that exhibits extraordinary properties, including an exceptionally high X-ray luminosity, average temperature, and a powerful and extended radio halo. The irregular and complex morphology of its gas and galaxy structure suggests that this cluster has recently undergone major merger events that involve two or more cluster components. In this paper, we study the gas structure and dynamics by means of spectral-imaging analysis of X-ray data obtained from XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. From the evidence o…
We present a detailed strong lensing, weak lensing and X-ray analysis of Abell 2744 (z = 0.308), one of the most actively merging galaxy clusters known. It appears to have unleashed `dark', `ghost', `bullet' and `stripped' substructures, each ~10^14 solar masses. The phenomenology is complex and will present a challenge for numerical simulations to reproduce. With new, multiband HST imaging, we identify 34 strongly-lensed images of 11 galaxies around the massive Southern `core'. Combining this with weak lensing data from HST, VLT and Subaru, we produce the most detailed mass map of this cluste…
We present a $250\,$ks Chandra observation of the cluster merger A2034 with the aim of understanding the nature of a sharp edge previously characterized as a cold front. The new data reveal that the edge is coherent over a larger opening angle and is significantly more bow-shock-shaped than previously thought. Within $\sim 27\,$degrees about the axis of symmetry of the edge the density, temperature and pressure drop abruptly by factors of $1.83^{+0.09}_{-0.08}$, $1.85^{+0.41}_{-0.41}$ and $3.4^{+0.8}_{-0.7}$, respectively. This is inconsistent with the pressure equilibrium expected of a cold f…
We present a dynamical analysis of the merging galaxy cluster system Abell 2146 using spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on the Gemini North telescope. As revealed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the system is undergoing a major merger and has a gas structure indicative of a recent first core passage. The system presents two large shock fronts, making it unique amongst these rare systems. The hot gas structure indicates that the merger axis must be close to the plane of the sky and that the two merging clusters are relatively close in mass, from the observation o…
Diffuse intracluster light (ICL) and cD galaxy halos are believed to originate from galaxy evolution and disruption. We present a kinematic study of the ICL in the Hydra I cluster core, using planetary nebulas (PNs) as tracers. We used multi-slit imaging spectroscopy with FORS2 on VLT-UT1 to detect 56 PNs associated with diffuse light in the central 100 x 100 kpc^2 of Hydra I. We measured their [OIII] magnitudes, sky positions, and velocity distribution (LOSVD), and compared with the phase-space distribution of nearby galaxies. The luminosity function of the detected PNs is consistent with tha…
Abell 2256 is a rich, nearby (z=0.0594) galaxy cluster that has significant evidence of merger activity. We present new radio and X-ray observations of this system. The low-frequency radio images trace the diffuse synchrotron emission of the Mpc-scale radio halo and relics as well as a number of recently discovered, more compact, steep spectrum sources. The spectral index across the relics steepens from the north-west toward the south-east. Analysis of the spectral index gradients between low and and high-frequencies shows spectral differences away from the north-west relic edge such that the …
Radio halos are extended and diffuse non-thermal radio sources present at the cluster center, not obviously associated with any individual galaxy. A strong correlation has been found between the cluster X-ray luminosity and the halo radio power. We observe and analyze the diffuse radio emission present in the complex merging structure Abell 523, classified as a low luminosity X-ray cluster, to discuss its properties in the context of the halo total radio power versus X-ray luminosity correlation. We reduced VLA archive observations at 1.4 GHz to derive a deep radio image of the diffuse emissio…

We present new XMM-Newton observations of the northwest (NW) radio relic region in the cluster Abell 3667. We detect a jump in the X-ray surface brightness and X-ray temperature at the sharp outer edge of the radio relic which indicate that this is the location of a merger shock with a Mach number of about 2. Comparing the radio emission to the shock properties implies that approximately 0.2% of the dissipated shock kinetic energy goes into accelerating relativistic electrons. This is an order of magnitude smaller than the efficiency of shock acceleration in many Galactic supernova remnants, w…
The mechanisms giving rise to diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters, and in particular their connection with cluster mergers, are still debated. We aim to obtain new insights into the internal dynamics of the cluster Abell 2294, recently shown to host a radio halo. Our analysis is mainly based on redshift data for 88 galaxies acquired at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. We also use new photometric data acquired at the Isaac Newton Telescope and X-ray data from the Chandra archive. We re-estimate the redshift of the large, brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) obtaining <z>=0.1690. We estimate a …
The connection of cluster mergers with the presence of extended, diffuse radio sources in galaxy clusters is still being debated. In this paper we aim to obtain new insights into the internal dynamics of Abell 959, showing evidence of a diffuse radio source, analyzing velocities and positions of member galaxies. Our analysis is based on redshift data for 107 galaxies in the cluster field acquired at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. We also use photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (Data Release 6). We combine galaxy velocities and positions to select 81 galaxies recognized as clu…
We study diffuse radio emission in the galaxy cluster A1550, with the aim of constraining particle re-acceleration in the intra-cluster medium. We exploit observations at four different frequencies: 54, 144, 400 and 1400 MHz. To complement our analysis, we make use of archival Chandra X-ray data. At all frequencies we detect an ultra-steep spectrum radio halo ($S_ν\propto ν^{-1.6}$) with an extent of 1.2 Mpc at 54 MHz. Its morphology follows the distribution of the thermal intra-cluster medium inferred from the Chandra observation. West of the centrally located head-tail radio galaxy, we detec…
We present newly discovered radio emission in the galaxy cluster Abell 2443 which is (1) diffuse, (2) extremely steep spectrum, (3) offset from the cluster center, (4) of irregular morphology and (5) not clearly associated with any of the galaxies within the cluster. The most likely explanation is that this emission is a cluster radio relic, associated with a cluster merger. We present deep observations of Abell 2443 at multiple low frequencies (1425, 325 and 74 MHz) which help characterize the spectrum and morphology of this relic. Based on the curved spectral shape of the relic emission and …

Diffuse radio emission has been found in many galaxy clusters, predominantly in massive systems which are in the state of merging. The radio emission can usually be classified as relic or halo emission, which are believed to be related to merger shocks or volume-filling turbulence, respectively. Recent observations have revealed radio bridges for some pairs of very closeby galaxy clusters. The mechanisms that may allow to explain the high specific density of relativistic electrons, necessary to explain the radio luminosity of these bridge regions, are poorly explored. We analyse the galaxy clu…

We present results from an X-ray and radio study of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 115. We use the full set of 5 Chandra observations taken of A115 to date (360 ks total integration) to construct high-fidelity temperature and surface brightness maps. We also examine radio data from the Very Large Array at 1.5 GHz and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 0.6 GHz. We propose that the high X-ray spectral temperature between the subclusters results from the interaction of the bow shocks driven into the intracluster medium by the motion of the subclusters relative to one another. We have identi…
